of Venus, died Wednesday May 14, 2008 ,
at Clarion Hospital

Born December 17, 1928 , in Oil City , she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Opal Wurster Guth.

She was married September 27, 1952 , to Ralph Lander and he survives.

Mrs. Lander was a homemaker all her life. She was a member of St Michael Church in Fryburg and a member of the Rosary Society of the church.

Mrs. Lander enjoyed spending time with her family, her flower gardens and playing cards with her husband and family.

In addition to her husband,
Mrs. Lander is survived by six children, Louise Carroll and her husband, Stephen, of Zephyrhills , Fla.,
Greg Lander and his wife, Sherrell, of Colleyville, Texas, Loretta Trevino and her husband, Larry, of Lima, Ohio,
Lisa Carroll and her husband, George, of Lucinda,
Ralph Lander of Vernon, Conn.
and Lynne Fleisher and her husband, Rob, of Strattanville;

11 grandchildren, Christine Wayt and her husband, James, of Zephyrhills, Fla.,
Adam Carroll and his wife, Jennifer, of Land O Lakes, Fla., Leann Carroll of Zephyrhills, Fla.,
Hanna and Chance Lander of Colleyville, Texas,
Andrew and Christopher Trevino of Lima, Ohio,

Mrs. Lander is also survived by
six sisters, Rita McGraw of Erie,
Doris Kramer and her husband, Lloyd, of Oil City,
Dorothy Schupp and her husband, Robert, of Fryburg,
Helen Obenrader and her husband, Jim, of Shippenville,
Clara Sonoski and her husband, Joe, of Shippenville
and Cathy Shingledecker and her husband, Rodger, of Shippenville;
two brothers, Henry Guth and his wife, Donna, of Oil City and Alfred Guth Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Shippenville and a sister-in-law Mona Rita Guth of Fryburg.

In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Lander was preceded in death
by one brother, Gerald Guth,
a granddaughter, Marissa Trevino,
and a brother-in-law Jack McGraw.

Friends were received Friday, May 16, 2008 , at the Faller Funeral Home Inc. in Fryburg. Parish prayer services were held Friday in the funeral home.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday. May 17, 2008 , in St. Michael Church, Fryburg with Rev. David Poulson, pastor as the presider.

Burial followed the mass in the church cemetery.

I too am a descendant of William Lander b. 1664.in Dorset. Some of my family still live in Langton Matravers.Does any one have any info further back than this? A story in my family says that the Landers came from Spain at the time of the Spanish Armada. They were washed up and forced to 'land'. We certainly have dark hair and skin. Lovely tans in the summer.Would love to hear from anyone who can help. Alison

Seeking info on any of these Lander names: Samuel and William were said to have lived in Appleton, Green Bay, WI. Edwin Lander was in Naperville, IL, went to CA goldfields with James Penrose Johnson who died there. Edwin returned to Naperville. Mary Skittery Lander married Byron Johnson, son of James Penrose Johnson. They went to Woodbury county, IA.
The Landers came to US on ship Java which sank the next trip across the ocean. I believe they arrived in 1845 or 1850.

I live beside a small unmarked Lander Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. I have found some of these names in this cemetery. This cemetery is in horrible shape and most of it is not legible now, broken and put into a pile. I didn't know it was a Lander Cemetery untill my trip to the Library. I understand that the little village on the Potomac River - about 50 miles north of Washington, DC - was named by the residents in the Civil War for Gen. Lander.

I would like to have as much personal history as feasible - with insights to his character and personal diary which could indicate why a strongly confederate area would name their post office after a Union general.
