I can take Frances back 6 generations. Do you have GedCom? I exchange info at no charge. hlandes@verizon.net

Landes in Rockingham County, VA

I've just found Landes family in one of the trees I'm working on.

Frances Catherine Landes (1932-2003) married Warren J. Shipe (1933-1992).
Her parents were Frank (possibly Franklin Morris) Landes and Martha Boyers.

Frances died in Harrisonburg, VA and her direct Shipes are from Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties, VA.

This is all I have of her family. If anyone has these names in their tree, I'd love to hear from you!

Thanks!

Heinrich and Ann Margaret Landes, York Co., PA

I am trying to identify Heinrich and Ann Margaret Landes in York Co., PA

Johann Heinrich of Johannes Peterman and Barbara, born 7 Oct 1779, baptized 24 Nov 1799. Sponsors: Heinrich and Anna Margaret Landes. [First Reformed and Trinity First Reformed Church, York, PA]

Henry Peterman(above) was the son of John Peterman and Barbara Eckert Peterman. Normally the sponsorship of Peterman family births was by Aunts and Uncles. The other children of this family had baptismal sponsors by Peterman or Eckert relatives.

John Peterman had a sister, Anna Margaret Peterman born October 22, 1759, Windsor Twp., York Co., PA. Little is known about Anna Margaret Peterman.

Does anyone have information on Heinrich Landes or any evidence of a marriage to Anna Margaret Peterman ?

Greg Peterman

This lineage of Christian LANDES and Barbara STRICKLER is incorrect.

Christian and Barbara's son, John LANDES, Sr.was born about 1752 in Windsor, York County, PA and married Catherine MILLER abt. 1770. He died in Windsor, York County, PA. I descend through John and Catherine's son, John, Jr. who married Frances BRENNEMAN 08 Jul 1800 in Rockingham County, VA. John and Frances were married by Rev. Benjamin Ervin.

John died in Greemcast;e. Putnam County, Indiana 04 Feb 1846. My line continues through John's son, Samuel LANDES who married Magdalena SIPLE and they migrated to Decatur County, Iowa.

Re: Abraham Landes: West Virginia Line

Abraham who married Eliza Borror lived in Milroy in 1900 on the same page ED 21 Sheet 3A page 146 as the children you mention.

Their son Abraham Scott Landes married Rebecca Alt and Mary Reed. Abraham S. in 1900 was in Milroy ED 21 Sheet 6A page 149 with wife Rebecca and children Oliver, Nettie, and Warren. In 1910 Abraham was with Mary in Milroy. In 1920 and 1930 they lived in Romney in Hampshire County. The information that I have says that Abraham's children with Rebecca were Oliver R., Effie, Nettie, Warren, Emmett, and Oscar. The children by Mary were Melvin, Abraham Stanley, William, Marion, Virginia, and Marjorie.

Allan Campbell
soupuno@aol.com
Most of his descendants ended up in VA and IN, but some stayed in York.

Thanks for letting me copy your post to our website.
Ernie,
Thanks you SO much for posting about your trip to Hirzel! There are so many of us Landes. desc. who will never get that opportunity, but reading your post was almost like being there with you. Do you have some photos to share as well?

I would love to copy your post on our MyFamily site, The Descendants of Christian Landes. Or you can post it there yourself, if you wish. I can send an invitation to your email address (The MyFamily sites are by invitation only so that the members don't need to worry about people invading their privacy or getting personal information from the sites.) We have about 50 'cousins' who are desc. of Christian Landes of York County and are trying to get past him.

Thanks again for taking the time to post about your visit!

Karen McPherson

I believe i'm related to Elias Landes too and would love to share some info!

From my research, i have determined that Elias married Nellie Maude Layton. They had a daughter Nellie Maude Landes. The 2nd Nellie Maude is my great great grandmother.

Since you are related to Elias, it'd be great to confirm my research!
Visit to Hirzel, Switzerland

On a recent train trip through Europe, we spent one night in Zurich, Switzerland. I inquired at the hotel desk about a taxi to take us to Hirzel, about 20 km. outside of town. Researchers of the Landes/Landis line will know that Hirzel was the home of Hans Landis (b. ~1520) and Katharina Schinz, the beginning of our recorded line, and the home of our most famous ancestor, Hans the Martyr (b. 1544). I requested an English-speaking driver, wanting to learn about the area on the taxi ride. I never gave a thought to the need for an interpreter upon reaching Hirzel. George, our driver from Ghana, was fairly good at English, and seemed interested in our quest.

The town is very picturesque, perched high in the very green hills surrounding Lake Zurich, populated mostly by cows! We headed directly for the church steeple, as the oldest known homestead from 1488, as pictured in the Landiss.com website, is shown just across the street from the church, at Dorfstrasse 53. We found the house immediately, parked the car, and George and I went to the door. The house seemed to be divided into about five apartments, one occupied by Alwin Landis, and another Dieter Landis. We rang both bells, and in a moment Alwin answered the door. I introduced myself as a Landes, and he seemed very happy to receive us. It was immediately obvious that he and I had a language problem. George disappeared, but I was ushered into Alwin’s kitchen, where he was just finishing his lunch. He cleared the lunch table, and brought out various books on the Landis genealogy. About that time George reappeared with a local woman and her Jack Russell terrier in tow. She had been walking her dog by the house, and George found that she spoke excellent English and was willing to interpret.

Alwin (Alvin) turned out to be 82 years old, was born in a house just up the hill, and had received many visitors over the years who were interested in his house. He had several pictures of himself and his visitors, some who had written the genealogy books. He gave me a copy of his family tree, hand written in 1925, dating back to 1600.

We took pictures of Alwin and his house. Our interpreter pointed out a house up the hill where the author of “Heidi” had lived. I made a quick visit to the church across the street. By that time it was obvious that George was anxious to get back to work, so we felt a bit rushed. I forgot to look in the cemetery, but that would have taken a lot more time. So we returned to Zurich, feeling that the visit to Hirzel had been one of the highlights of our trip.

I would certainly encourage any interested person visiting Zurich to stop in at Hirzel. Our taxi ride cost us 200 Swiss francs roundtrip from Zurich, and the town is accessible by bus. Plan on spending more time there, and certainly take a look at the cemetery. Is “the Martyr” buried there? You will need to consider the language problem – we were lucky to find the woman with the dog to interpret. Alwin seemed to speak a local dialect of German, as George was unable to help us.

One other note: In St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, in a room off the huge main sanctuary, there is a granite slab on the wall with the names of all the Popes chiseled in chronological order. There in the year 914 is listed POPE LANDVS! Is he one of us???

Ernie Landes
Another Jacob Landis

I am trying to determine who my gr GF's father was. His name was Jacob Leander Landis. He was born in Bucks County, PA on 10-10-1858. His mother's name was Nancy Kirk Landis (1827 - 1896). His brothers' names were Benjamin, Luther, and Joseph Landis. They appear on the 1860 US census in PA with their grandfather, John Kirk. In 1880, they had moved to Parkersburg, WV. After Nancy died, they moved to Athens County, Ohio. Jacob also lived in Monessen, PA in the early 1900's. He married Bridget Foy from Doddridge,WV in 1882. I have not been able to trace them to a specific Landis branch since I can't locate Jacob's father. The death records for the brothers list the father's name as either Jacob or Samuel Landis from PA. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thank you for your help.

I don't know her maiden name or their death dates.

Also, you said that Raymond Earl Landes was your father. I didn't have a Raymond as a child, just a Fred R. Landes and a Wilma Lee Landes.

I'd love any further info on this line, down from Hannah and Henry, especially to confirm dates and names.

He lied about his age and joined the navy. He is buried in Fanklin as well. I have picture's of Elias holding my dad (Raymond Earl Landes) as a baby. My dad said Elias was mean and ruled with his cain. Elias mother Hannah was blind. I have a picture of her on her 86 birthday.
Re: Hirzel visit

I'll be eager to hear what you could learn in your Hirzel visit about the Landes family. I was in Zurich and as we traveled south, our guide pointed out Hirtzel. What can one see and find out about the Landes family by a visit there? rushj@emhs.net.
Thanks, Jim

Abraham Landes: West Virginia Line

I am researching the line of Abraham Landes b. Nov 1830 (1900 census) in West VA. Wife shown as Eliza.J b. Sep 1839 m 1856 with 13 children/10 survived. Residence was in Milroy, Grant, WVA along with Daniel and Mary Landes family; John and Ellen Landes family and Joseph and Mary Landes Family. I am looking for son Abraham b. 1867 (1910 Census) with second wife Mary E. m. 1907. 1930 census shows Abe and Mary in Romney with 5 children at home. This must have been his second family, I think. First wife bore Oliver, Nettie, Ronnie, Emmett and Oscar. 2nd wife bore MelvinStanley, William, Marion *, Virginia and Marjorie.
If I've got the families mixed up, please advise. Looking to follow the ancestry for my children.
