Isaiah S Lane

I have been studying John L Lane and who his possible father might of been, could anyone help clear this up. John was shown in 1850 NJ Census living with Isaiah S Lane,

BOTTOM LINE THOUGHT'S:

In 1850 NJ census my GG Grandfather John L Lane was recorded living with a Isaiah S Lane, though you would think this was John's father, but I have my doubt's -

Reason One: On this 1850 census John and I think possible his brother Caldwell LANE was out of child order and the ages are different if the order was arranged correct.
Reason two: In Isaiah's Obituary niether Caldwell or John was mentioned as his children and I know my GG Grandfather John L Lane was alive till 1916.
Reason three: in Isaiah's will again it doesn't mention Caldwell or John

I do though believe John & Caldwell Lane to be close family, possibly children from a brother or close cousin.

New Jersey Obituaries - April 20, 1898 - Isaiah S. Lane
Isaiah S. Lane of West Long Branch died last Saturday of a cancer of the stomach, with which he had been sick for nearly a month. Mr. Lane was 84 years old and had lived in the vicinity of West Long Branch ever since he was a young man.
His wife was Miss Mary Ann Lane of Turkey, who he married 64 years ago, and who, with five children, survives him. The children are Samuel Lane, Mrs. Sarah L. Gibbs, Mrs. Mary Campbell and Mrs. Lavinia Woolley of West Long Branch and Lewis Lane of Holmdel. Mr. Lane had been a member of the Methodist church 75 years. He was a charter member of Arioch lodge of Odd Fellows of Long Branch and was past master of Washington lodge of Freemasons of Eatontown.
The funeral was held yesterday and the body was buried in West Long Branch cemetery, the funeral rites of Arioch lodge being performed at the grave. The pall bearers were James H. Woolley and Munroe V. Poole of West Long Branch, Edwin Woolley of Wayside, Thomas Cook of Oakhurst, Stewart Jeffrey of Elberon and Bartine Sherman of Long Branch.

Isaiah S. Lane's Last Will,
Isaiah S. Lane of West Long Branch, who died about a month ago , left a will bequeathing his property to his widow and five children. To his widow Mr. Lane left the homestead at West Long Branch. He directed that his farm be sold and that all his debts be paid. Mrs. S. L. Gibbs, Samuel Lane and Mrs. Lavinia Woolley are each to receive $1,000 and Mrs. Woolley is also left a lot on Cedar avenue at West Long Branch. Mrs. Mary Campbell is bequeathed $800 and Lewis Lane of Holmdel will get $1,000 in cash and whatever is left from the sale of the farm, after the other bequests have been paid.

My cousin and I began researching our Lane family history last year and started with Benjamin Franklin Lane (b.1850. d.1917)who is my g-grandfather and grandfather of Roy Wilder (my 2nd cousin).

Thanks to Heather Bowers and many others who have posted info, I think we have now connected our family to Thomas Lane Sr. of Jamestown Va. I would appreciate additional info, particularly on Micajah Lane or Lemon Lane.

Following is a synopsis of my linkages. I have listed daughters with their married name if known.

Descendants of Thomas Lane of Jamestown & Surry County, Virginia

1. Thomas Lane (1634-1708). Married Elizabeth Shepherd Jones, widow of Foulke Jones. Lived in Jamestown, VA and Surry County, VA. Children of Thomas and Elizabeth were: 1. Thomas Lane, Jr., 2. Joseph Lane. Thomas Lane, Thomas Lane, Jr. and Joseph Lane appear in the VA Militia List of 1687.

2. Joseph Lane, Sr. (1665 – 1746). Married Jullian (Jillian) Pope or Jarrell. Joseph Lane, Sr. lived in Isle of Wight County, VA, Albemarle County, NC which later became Bertie and then Northampton Co, NC, and Johnston Co, NC. Children of Joseph and Jullian were: 1. Joseph Lane, Jr., 2. Benjamin Lane, 3. Mary, and 4. John . Joseph was grandfather of Joel Lane.

3. Benjamin Lane (1700 – 1789). Married Ann Drew first and then Mary ?. Benjamin lived in Edgecombe Co, NC and Nash Co, NC near the Tar River. Children were: 1. Joseph, 2. Faith Bynum, 3. Drewsilla Bryant, 4. William, 5. Newit Lane, and 6. Edward. Capt. Benjamin Lane is listed in the Edgecombe Militia List of 1750.

4. Newit Lane (1733 – 1786), also written as Newitt, Newt or Gerit. Married Elizabeth ? Lived in Edgecombe County, NC and Nash County, NC. Owned 1000 acres at his death. Children were 1. Drusylla Hill, 2. John, 3. Micajah Lane, 4. Kinchen, 5. Mary Pusell, and 6. Bennet. Newit was first cousin of Joel Lane

5. Micajah Lane (1768 – 1796) also known as Micah. Married to unknown??. Lived in Edgecombe, Nash and Wake County. Children were 1. Drusilla Teat, 2. Lemon Lane

6. Lemon Lane (1795 – after 1850). Married Nancy Connell or Cornell. In 1802, Lemon and sister Drusilla were apprenticed as orphans to Christopher Christophers in Wake County. Lived mostly in Nash County after 1820. Lemon was a boot and shoemaker in the 1850 Nash County census. Children were: 1. Sarah Taylor, 2. Ann Thigpen, 3. Martha Lane, 4. William W. Lane, 5. Mary Lane, 6. Susan Thigpen, 7. Kidda or Kidela

7. William W. Lane (1827 – 1859). Married Nancy B. Wheless in July 1849. Lived in Edgecombe and Nash County. Possibly enlisted in the War with Mexico. Was a boot and shoemaker in Tarboro, NC in the 1850 census. Was in Rocky Mount in 1857 and bankrupt; all of his property (real and personal) was sold at public auction. Children were: 1. Benjamin Franklin Lane, 2. Ella Rice/Bridgers, 3. Ida Barnes

8. Benjamin Franklin Lane (1850 – 1917), called Frank. Married Victoria Hellen Horner in Jan 1872. Lived in Edgecombe, Nash and Granville County. Was a tobacco farmer and “drummer” for the Mitchell tobacco factory (owned by Alphonso, Erastus and Alonzo Mitchell). Children were William L. Wyatt Lane, 2. Nancy Gertrude Lane, 3. Lane - George Thomas 1890's plus others

My grandad was Eric George Lane b. 1923 KIA 5 Oct 1943. His father was George Thomas Lane b.1896, d 1958 married Alice Agnes Trout b. 1888 St. Annes Church, Nottingham 21 Apr 1921.

George Thomas' father was called George also and on George Thomas' marriage certificate, George (father) is named as a photographer.

I'm trying to trace this line for my mum, as she never met her father, Eric George, he was killed in the RAF before she was born.

I'm stuck because I don't know George Thomas's mothers name, or any other details about birth etc. Rumour has it they were from The Fens, Ribblesdale or Yorkshire, but they are only rumours. George Thomas was a barber and had his own shop in Hyson Green, Nottingham, he was also in the Forces.

If anyone recognises these names please let me know.

I'm currently searching for any living lane who lives in Ocean Monmouth NJ, I'm tracing my Mothers side of the family and most are from NJ then NY 1850 & on.

Seeking parents of Lanes John born about 1797 KY and Edward born about 1796 TN or KY

Early residents of Boone, Union, and Harrison counties Indiana

The circumstantial evidence is that John and Edward are descendents of the family
of Lambert Lane, born 1737 and dies Oct 1804 in Shelby Co., Kentucky.

There is quite a bit known about this extended family but I have not been able
to uncover much information on three possible couples for these two. There is a
bit and I am hoping there is actually more known than I have been able to find.

The only members I have been able to identify of the first family of Thomas Lane,
oldest son of Lambert Lane, born 5 Jun 1763 Holston River Valley, Sullivan, TN
dies 18 aug 1835 Harrison Co., IN are mentioned in his will. They are Elizabeth
Lane born 1786 who marries Jacob Roberts, Thomas Lane born 1793 probably born TN,
and Nancy born 1798 probably KY. There is an Elizabeth probably born 1786 TN listed
in Lambert Lanes estate settlement. It would appear she is Thomas' daughter. It also
looks like Thomas' first wife move with him to KY.

The second son of Lambert is John, born 1765 probably in TN. There are many John Lanes
but he doesn't appear to move to Shelby KY with most of Lamberts family mid 1790's.
I have found a death date for him of 10 Oct 1842. Apparently someone knows something.

The third son of Lambert is James born 1768 probably in TN. He appears to stay in
Tennessee and there are records of a James in Stewart and Grainger counties.

Thomas Lane moves to Harrison co IN in 1811. John Lane is listed in an 1812 census
index in Indiana and is married in Harrison co in 1817. Edward is married in Harrison
co in 1814. Samuel Lane, another son of Lambert Lane, is married in 1811 in
Harrison co. John and Edward are found in the census for the next decades living
next to or close to descendents of Lambert. The Boone co Indiana web site history page
says "The first residents of Union Township were the Lane brothers, Jesse, Edward,
Samuel and John. Recorded history has the Lane's here as early as 1826." Samuel and
Jesse are the youngest sons of Lambert Lane. Edward is listed as born 1796 KY or TN and
John 1797 KY. The same time the descendents of Lambert Lane are moving to KY from TN.

It does seem there is more known about these descendents of Lambert than I have been
able to find. Much of it is bits that look like they belong to something more. If you
have anything to add to this information it certainly would be appreciated.

She married Henry Ross b about 1803 and she had 3 children that I found so far: Hannah Maria Ross b.1822, Frances Delia Ross b.1829 and Henrietta Ross. I think she may be linked somehow to the Doxee Lane and Ester Freeman line, through one of their children.

Is anyone researching Fitz Hugh Lane, b. 1804 in Gloucester, Essex Co., MA, d. 1865 in Gloucester? He was born Nathaniel Rogers Lane, but changed it to Fitz Hugh (some say Fitz Henry) Lane. There is a museum at Cape Ann, Gloucester, MA that features his painting. I would like to learn more about him.

Looking for information on Patrick (b. abt 1835 in Ireland) and Bridget (b. abt 1840 in Ireland) LANE. They were married in Ireland and had one daughter, Mary, b. abt 1872 in Ireland. Their son, Patrick, was born in 1875 in MA.

Patrick, Sr. died in Boston, MA in 1880 and Patrick, Jr. was placed in orphanage in 1883 and later sent to midwest via Orphan Train.

Daughter, Mary, died November or December of 1911, leaving 6 children. Do not know Mary's married name.

Bridget (also known as Delia) died in Long Island Hospital in 1929.

Does anyone have a connection to these names?

I am looking for heirs of these two people. In the 1900 census I believe I have found Bridget and three children. The Census states that she had 6 children with 5 still living. I believe that by 1900 William born in 1898 (my paternal grandfather) was living in either Brooklyn or Manhattan with one Katherine Tracy a nurse, as either a surrogate or foster parent. By 1900 I believe Maurice to have been dead for a short period of time, I have known that there were only 6 children but they were scattered to the wind after Bridget's death I believe before 1910 but that is unclear. I found Katherine Tracy in the 1920 census living in Manhattan acting as nurse to Judge Benjamin Cardoza, and in the 1930 census living with my grandparents William and Margaret Lane on Mesereau Ave on Staten Island. The other Lane children whose names I have are Daniel, Maurice and James.

Brick wall time: I am seeking the parents of Richard S. Lane. Richard was b. 1795 in SC and is found on the census of 1820-1850 in Beaufort, SC. He married Rachael Winkler in Beaufort in 1832. In 1860 he is enumerated in the census of Bryan County, GA. Richard and Rachael were the parents of John, Benjamin, Samuel, James Monroe Lane and, possibly, Celina and Richard. Rachael is listed on the census of 1870 in Bulloch County, GA with two of her sons. Several posts suggest that Richard's parents were John Lane and Mary Guinn. An IGI record for Alexander Sander Lane and a Mary Quinn/Guinn, parents John Lane and Mary (Polly) Sheppard, suggests another possibility. I have found no record of Richard's death or burial.

Hi, I found this looking for information about Martha's grandson, Captain William Lane. Its her obit from the Virginia Gazette (Rind) March 10, 1774, p. 3 (index available at the Colonial Williamsburg website):

"Died on the 9th of February at the home of Captain Benedict Middleton in Westmoreland, Mrs Martha Lane, aged 78 years; she was a good christian, an affectionate wife, a tender mother, and a good mistress; and she was justly esteemed by all those of her acquaintance."

Martha's daughter, Hanna Lane, married Benedict Middleton, so it makes sense that as a widow she would live with her daughter and die at her house.

Hi All --

I recently found an old bible (1853)that had once belonged to William Haywood. On the inside is written,"The property of William Haywood Bought March 20, 1854." There is no other identification or writing. There are a few leaves and ferns pressed in the bible, a cross stitch piece that says, "Watch and Pray", two pictures from a magazine (perhaps?), and a small card. The small card has handwritten, "Matthew Lane" and "Wm. Round" The name 'Round' is a guess - it's hard to read after the letter 'o.' The text of the card is a bible verse.

Although this is very vague information, perhaps it is enough to help 'find' its way home to family :-) I'd be happy to scan the handwritten information to those interested.

John's siblings that we know of are Dave and Charlie T Lane. Charlie died in Michigan. I don't know were Dave went. John William Harrison Lane was alsoknown as Harry John Lane. He married first Mary P Brown in Randalph County Arkansas. Children: Harry Jr., Glendal, and Lyman Leroy. 2nd marriage was to Annie (Nanny) Bell Brown.

Seeking info abt ancestors and descendants of William Lane born abt 1773 in MD. He had at least one child (Malachi Lane) born in OH in 1806. The Malachi Lane family was in Jefferson Twp (Fayette Co.) OH for the 1830 US census; Miami Twp (Greene Co.) OH for 1840; Prairie Twp (Franklin Co.) OH for 1850; and Benton Twp (Lucas Co.) IA for the 1856 Iowa state census. What we don't know is the name of Malachi’s mother; where William (Malachi’s father) died; and who are the other siblings of Malachi. William is listed in the 1850 census in (Franklin Co.) OH with Malachi and his family but is not in the household for the 1856 (Lucas Co.) Iowa state census. However, in 1856, there is now an adopted child in the Malachi Lane household by the name of John O. Huddleston. We don't know why Malachi adopted him. One theory is that John was a nephew and maybe something happened to his family which prompted Malachi to take him in. Any info abt these unanswered questions would be greatly appreciated.

Their children were ADA F. b. 1872 in AR, EDWARD C. b. 1874 in GA, FRANKLIN S. b. 1876 in GA, MARY H. b. 1878 in AR and ROSE ANNA b. March 1880 in AR. (Rose was my GGrandmother).

I've been led to believe that Curtis Lane (1810-1870) and Hannah (Hanner)(1812-????) were Gideon's parents.

Wanting to correspond with any of Curtis Lane's descendents to find info on my Gideon.

She is found in 1910 in Juanita Township, Tuscola County, MI with her husband John, is is 37 years old, married for 18 years, born in MI and both her parents were born in NY and she has had 5 children that are all still alive at that time. In the 1900 Juanita Township, Tuscola County, MI with her husband John, 27 years old and her birthday in August 1872 in Michigan, married 7 years, 4 children, and parents still born in NY. Next I found a Marriage Record for John Lash and Delia Lane, in Richfield, Genesee County, MI on 6 December 1892. Delia was 20 years old and was from Hadley, Lapeer County, MI. Her father was Isaac Lane from Lapeer County, MI. So I naturally go looking for Isaac Lane in Lapeer County.... I found in 1880 in Elba, Lapeer County, MI an Isaac Lane, 41 years old, born in NY with wife Elsie (31 years old), and children Maggie (age 10), Cordelia (age 6), William (age 5), Charles (age 3) and Minnie (age 1), Now is this the Isaac in the marriage record... I don't know... but it looks like it to me.

William West Lane married Mary Willis (not wheeler, Mary's sister martha married John Wheeler)Mary and William had two children who lived to adulthood, William Phipps Lane and Mariah Lane. Mary passed away in 1842. William moved the family to Nauvoo, where he married Mariah or Maria Burr. In 1846 they all move to Counsel Bluffs, Iowa. In 1847 William Phipps Lane and Mariah Lane moved west in the Abraham Smoot Company with their maternal grandmother (Margaret Cherry Willis), aunts (Martha Wheeler and Margaret Willis), uncle Joshua Thomas Willis and a bunch of cousins see link:

I have found William Phipps Lane in an 1880 Census in Carson City, Ormsby, Nevada living with unrelated people, working as a laborer.

I have found Mariah Lane in an 1870 Census in Greenwood township, El Dorado, California.

Can anyone fill in the blank years for me on William Phipps Lane and Mariah Lane. I am a descendant of their uncle Joshua Thomas Willis. Thank you for any help you might be able to give.

I have an ancestor Colonel William Lane. He was the Governor of St Helena in 1807-8 and was involved with the capture of Buenos Ayres around the same time. Our records show that his father was Thomas Lane of Bentley Hall, Staffordshire, England, but I have found it difficult to trace on the internet web sites.
Colonel William Lane married Margaret Camac, the daughter of John Camac of "Greenmount" Lurgan Armagh Ireland.
He had the following children : Thomas, Charles Edward, Turner, William Camac, Anne, Elizabeth Sybil, Jane & Margaret.

Joseph W. LANE & his family were living in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois at least from 1870 to 1878. He possibly worked for the railroad. His wife name was Abby & they had 2 known children, "Mary "Mamie" & Elizabeth "Lizzie" LANE. According to the 1870 Sangamon County IL. census, he & his wife were born in New Hampshire, but his obituary states he was born abt. 1833 in Plymouth, New York. Joseph died October 05, 1905 in Hannibal, Marion County, Missouri, and his body was returned to Springfield, IL. for burial in Oakridge Cemetery. The cemetery has no record of this. His wife Abby (unknown maiden name) died June 11, 1915 in Hannibal, Mo. Her remains were also burial in Oakridge Cemetery.
Joseph & Abby daughter, Mary "Mamie" was last known living in Hannibal and was a music teacher. She appeared not to marry. Unknown when or where she died.
Their other daughter Elizabeth "Lizzie" married Edward S. DUNNING on April 29, 1891 in Hannibal and had 2 known children:
1) Woodson DUNNING born Aug. 1, 1905 in Kansas and died late April 1987 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa. He married Elizabeth BOETTGER in Waukegan, Cook County, Illinois. They had 2 children: Donna DUNNING who married Vern MOORE and lived Flossmoor, Cook County, Illinois, and Wayne DUNNING who lived Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas
2) Helen J. DUNNING born Sept 29, 1892 in Missouri, died Feb 6, 1989 in Flossmoor, IL. Lived many years in Davenport, IA. Appears to have never married.

It is unknown what became of Edward S. DUNNING, but later Elizabeth "Lizzie" was married to William Ross HESSER and lived in Pennsylvania and Roanoke, Virginia. It is unknown where and when Elizabeth "Lizzie" died.

Obit: Lommie “Doc” Lane - Son of Leondas and Clara Hall Lane

WILSON CITY - Lommie “Doc” Lane, 79, died Sept. 19, 2005, at his home.
Born March 6, 1926, in Sikeston, son of the late Leondas and Clara Hall Lane, he lived most of his life in Missouri. He was a retired farmer and was a former mayor of Wilson City for 16 years. He was a member of Sanders Chapel A.M.E. Church since 1944, and was a trustee and the pastor’s steward for 43 years.
On Nov. 3, 1946, he married Nona Brewster, who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: two sons, Lommie Lane Jr. and Trent Lane of Wilson City; one daughter and son-in-law, Vallorie and Timothy Jones of St. Louis; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and five brothers.
Visitation is at 10 a.m. Saturday with services to follow at 11 a.m. at the Perry Chapel A.M.E. Church in Charleston. The Rev. Johnny Thomas, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church of Cape Girardeau, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery near Charleston with Williams Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mary, Franklin, Alfred Lane of TN

Searching for info and the parents of my g-grandmother, Mary, and her brothers, Alfred and Franklin of TN. Mary was born @1830 and died @1860 in McClennan Co., TX. She married Joseph Key before 1856, place unknown. Their first son, Thomas Alfred (my gf) was born 10 Dec 1856 near Waco, McLennan TX. The second son, John, was born before 1860, when Mary died. Mary's brothers were brothers-in-law to Wes Sheek and Charles Goodnight and were for a time in Palo Pinto Co., TX. Any "distant" cousins out there?
