Pierre Langlois (born in France or England)

I am looking for any assistance possibly from French (and hopefully English) language speakers researching French family history.

I have a seventh (7th) generation grandfather named Pierre Langlois (possibly John Peter Langlois) born possibly between 1700 and 1720 in either France or England.

What is known is that Pierre Langlois lived in London in the mid 1740-1760's and became a renowned Ebeniste (a French Cabinetmaker) and who is quite well known in the world of fine furniture and whose pieces can still be found in Buckingham Palace and a number of other art galleries in the USA and parts of the UK. He is quite prominent on the internet.

What is known is that Pierre's wife was a Tracey Langlois (whose name appeared on London rate books in the 1760's) and who died under this name in 1781 (death registered at St Pancras Parish Church, London). Pierre had three children named Mary (possibly Marie) Francoise Langlois born about 1740, Jane Alexander (or Alexandra) Langlois born about 1750 and Peter Daniel Langlois born between 1751 and 1755. It is unknown where the 3 children where born, however each were married in one of the St Pancras Churches, Camden, London. I have not been able to narrow down which London parish they may have been baptised in, if they were baptised in London at all.

Pierre's trade card (half written in French and English) is held at the British Museum. Given this and a number of his bills of trade being written in French, it would appear that he was definitely of French background, however his exact date and place of birth is unknown.

Pierre is believed to be one and the same whose burial was listed under the name John Peter langlois on 19 Feb 1767 in St Pancras, London.

Many articles have been written about Pierre Langlois and his furniture and same can be found in a number of fine furniture magazines etc. He sold his furniture to a number of English gentry including The Duke of Bedford, Horace Walpole, the 6th baron of Craven, the 6th Earl of Coventry, the 1st Duke of Montagu and the 4th Duke of Bedford to name a few.

Another French ebeniste named Pierre Eloi Langlois also lived in paris around the same time, however it is not believed to be the same person. This Pierre Langlois was not believed to have worked in London.

Some authors of these articles believe that Pierre was possibly of Huguenot extraction. A Pierre Langlois was born in 1718 at the Church of the Savoye, London, (Familysearch.com) however it is not known if he is one and the same person. Research conducted by someone with links to the London Huguenot Society was not overly productive and was uanble to shed any light on Pierre's background. In fact I am not overly sure whether he was of Huguenot background. The only reason this was suggested was because of the many Huguenot refugees in London at this time and the similar type occupations these skilled migrants brought with them to London. The skills that Pierre Langlois had were quite unique at this particular point in time and it is believed his trade/apprenticeship was most likely undertaken under a master tradesman/craftsman the type of which were working in Paris in the early 1700's.

I do not also believe that Pierre Langlois came from the Channel Islands (where many Langlois names exist) as I have yet to find any link there.

I have searched high and wide on the new ancestry.com parish records from London, however the records for quite a few churches are still to be put on line. These churches include a few where French migrants were baptised, buried, married etc including St Clement Danes, London, St Martin in the Fields, London and a few other churches in the Westminster area of Western London.

If there are any persons out there who may be able to assist in any way or possibly point me in another direction where I may have some luck, I would be greatly indebted.

Regards

Michael Langlois

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

In searching for my Granger family, I found a Doris M. Granger, daughter of Frank & Ida (DeGroff)Granger who married a Louis Langlois. I have found references in the Appleton Post Crescent (Appleton, Wisconsin) to Mrs. Louis Langlois in the obituaries of both Frank and Ida Granger. However, I have been unable to find a marriage record for Doris Granger and Louis Langlois. It would be the second marriage for Louis and the third marriage for Doris. Her other husbands were Elmer Kuhnke and Charles Francisco. The marriage record might list her as Doris Francisco. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Paula,

I was interested to read about your database on the LANGLOIS name.

I am descended from a Pierre Langlois, a renowned Ebeniste (French cabinetmaker) who was I believe born in London, England on 10 Sep 1718. Pierre had a sister Anne Marie b 1708, and brothers Gedeon b 1714, Izaac b 1711 and Henry b 1723. The children were all christened in the French Huegenot quarter of London. Not much is known of the other siblings, however through my work, and the great assistance of some other wonderful elderly ladies, both in Australia and in England, have managed to trace back 8 generations to Pierre's father Daniel Langlois or L'anglois.

Pierre spoke French and English and worked out of London studio and passed on his trade to his sons. His work can be found on the internet and is housed at a number of well known galleries and stately homes in the UK.

Pierre was from a French Huegenot family, however I am not sure if his parents came directly from France or the Channel Islands where a lot of Langlois's reside. I have tried to gain assistance from the French Huegenot society, without any success.

I have come to a dead end and was wondering whether you may have any information that could link Pierre's family with anyone from your database. It is possible that Pierre's father Daniel was born in England, however I tend to think that he most likely emigrated from France sometime in the late 1600's as he was most likely born around the 1680's. It is possible that Pierre's mother (Daniel's wife) was called either Jeanne or Anne.

Regards and looking forward to hearing from you.

Michael Langlois
Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Hi Paula,

I am not sure if I have corresponded with you previously, however I am a descendant of a Pierre Langlois who was of French Huguenot extraction and born in 1718 in the French Huguenot district of Westminster in London. His siblings were Anne Marie b 1708, Izaac b 1711, Gedeon b 1714 and Henry born 1723. All were born/christened in the French Huguenot area of Westminster, London. There parents were according to Familysearch.com a Daniel Langlois and his wife Jeanne (or Anne). I am not sure where Daniel was born. Pierre Langlois was a noted 'ebeniste' - French cabinetmaker in London and his work can be found on the net. His trade card was in French and English, so perhaps his parents emigrated from France in the late 1600's, early 1700's. If you have any information regarding Pierre and his family I would be greatly appreciative.

I have only just started adding the Canadian Langlois branches to my own study in an attempt to find the common ancestor which I have as yet been unable to do. So any information that you may have that may help me in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

I am prepared to do a GED file swap on the Langlois family if you are interested.

Regards
Mike Lamusse
Just by typing Abraham Martin on search I got his story, his wife Marguerite came to Quebec with her sister Francoise and her husband. She married Abraham Martin, she is the daughter of Guillaume Langlois aned Jeanne Millet, she got married in Quebec 24th October 1621 and they had 9 children. All the children's names are listed on the site I found.

Jessie Langlois

I have a document published in The Soleil. Abraham Martin came to Quebec on the same boat as Luis Riel in the summer of 1617, with his wife Marguerite Langlois and his sister Francoise and his brother in-law Pierre Desportes. Abraham had a daughter named Helene. He received a piece of land ien 1635, today this is Les Plaines D'Abraham in Quebec city. It is said that his son who was a priest, Charles-Amador Martin was given to him by a notaried act dated 16th October 1675. He was the only surviving son. It is also mentioned that Abraham had 9 children. In 1649, when he was 60 years olf Abraham was arrested and put in prison for having had sex with a 16 years old girl, that after his wife had given him his ninth child 3 months before.

Marie was born about 1649 at Saint Maclou de Rouen, Normandie, France.

I also descend from Noel Langlois and Francoise Grenier through eight of their children and from Marguerite Langlois [parents unknown] who married Abraham Martin about 1621 in France.

I have a tremendous database on the Langlois families if you have any questions.

Paula

Hi Michael,

I checked my data and I don't have a Daniel Langlois. Maybe your hunch that he was born in the Channel Islands is correct. He's not among the Langlois that were born in France, at least, none in my data.

Paula

Thanks for the response.

All of this is absolutely fascinating. A few things I would like to pass along:

- There is an Association called "Les Langlois d'Amerique" which one can join for a modest annual fee. It is not 'high-powered' but can be interesting.

- There are eight branches of the original Langlois settler, Noel, who arrived in 1634.From him and Francoise Garnier sprang 6 daughters and 4 sons;

- Subsequently, 7 other Langlois came or multiplied:
Honore Langlois/LaChapelle and Marie Pontonnier - Married in 1661 Pointe aux Trembles
Nicolas Langlois and Elisabeth Creteil - Married 1671 Quebec
Germain Langlois and Jeanne Chalifour - Married 1675 Quebec
Pierre Langlois and Anne Huard - Married 1752 Pabos
Peter Langlois and Mary Sparrow - Married 1813 Montreal
William Langlois And Mary A. King - Married 1845 Oregon
Philippe Langlois Genevieve Laflamme - Married 1869 Perce

Since Noel, my forebear, from Guillaume of Normandy, had no sons named Nicolas, it's obvious Nicolas would likely have come from Honore.

Further, if you search hard enough on the internet you'll find a town named Langlois in Oregon and other references as well.

Please keep me up to date and I will try to do likewise.

I'm edmond.langlois@sympatico.ca

Born and raised in Montreal

I have only just found this site.
I might add to your data that this 'branch' of the Langlois beginnings in "New France" was called Langlois dit Traversy.
I believe Noel arrived in 1634.
