Surnames: Lanning, Laning, Howell
OK, I know the different Nathaniel Lanning have been a source of confusion for a long time. I am trying to determine the father of the Nathaniel Lanning who was born about 1790 in New Jersey and married Elizabeth Stults. I will refer to him as my Nathaniel.
There is a lot of confusion out there. Some believe his Father was Nathaniel who married Mary Howell. I can say with certainty he is NOT. I looked thought the baptismal records and Nathaniel the son of Nathaniel and Mary was baptized on August 28, 1824. Also Nathaniel Sr. was about 15 when my Nathaniel was born.
Others believe my Nathaniel was the son of Nathaniel and Mahetabel. He was NOT. I found two things, 1. Mehetable’s tombstone inscription say wife if Nathaniel, died Sept. 2 , 1852 age 75 years 2 Months 10 days.; which means she was born in 1777 and would have been about 13 when my Nathaniel was born.
I found the death registration for a Nathaniel Lanning who died Sept. 14, 1859, states he was a widow age 84 which means he was born in 1775 and would be about 15 when my Nathaniel was born; and the death record list his parents as Joseph and Anna. He was living in Philipsburg NJ at the time. He was most likely the husband of Mahetabel,
Now one interesting thing I found in the records of the Maidenhead/Trenton/Ewing Church transcribed by D.A.R is that the Reverend E.F. Cooley states that he was given a list of families in the church in the year 1823 and the list included
Nathaniel Laning DEAD. Could this have been the father of My Nathaniel? If he died before 1823 and didn’t die young he would be old enough.
The list also included “Elijah Laning Dead”
If you know who my Nathaniels Father is or is not let me know. If I can eliminate enough people I can make a good guess as to who he was.
Thank for any and all input.
Mary
