The book is on the entire Dutch Lansing family and its indirect family members who married into it. The book contains over 6,500 individuals and traces the family units back to Europe. Obviously I could not find every Lansing that descended from the 6 Lansing siblings that arrived in New York in 1655, but I tried to trace all that I could. there are several chapters on Rensselaer County region as well as Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson River.

Unfortunately, I do not speak Dutch or German, so that will be a huge disadvantage.

regards,

Bill Lansing

Bill,

hahaha - I wish I were in Hasselt - may try for it next year. I was in your neck of the woods more recently - 2 years back in Oregon.
Anyway, my info was a mix of conjecture and evidence. The material I wrote about his diary was on a sheet given to me by the historian who came to Albany, NY from the Netherlands. As for Frederick - some other NY historian or researcher mentioned that it was written on the side of the document. I may have a copy somewhere myself - not sure. My records are in disarray - just packed up starting 2 years back and moved to a new place this year. My records are packed in many different boxes and not as organized as they once were. What I have are those family summaries I wrote when I had things fresh in my mind from research and records orderly.
Another historian in the Netherlands actually took the book out like a library book - even though it is nearly 400 years old. He photocopied Gerrit's actual signature from the book, which I have somewhere. Gerrit himself has Gerritsz, or something like that for his middle name - indicating that he was the son of Gerrit. The fact that Gerrit the baker's son #1 and son #2 were named Gerrit and Hendrick after their grandfathers, well the names are fact, the reasons are conjecture - but it makes sense. Frederick has never, to my knowledge, appeared with the Lansing name in anywhere near that time period or that family - hence I believe strongly that since the late 19th century, people have put 2 + 2 together and come up with 5 - looking at then 200 year old records and not understanding what was occurring. Someone read one person's translation or interpretation - and the myth spread and continued - like the Wessels and Trinity Church thing.
Our ancestor Gerrit died in Hasselt and never traveled to the New World. His remarried widow and six children - 3 sons and 3 daughters - did come here. They arrived as children in 1655. The mother died in Albany, NY in 1679.
I thought that at one point I had sent some material to you. If not - I could send what I locate as I locate it. Let me know if you have a small package of material from me, Bill. Take care.
Jim Lansing jimlanman@aol.com

Gerrit Gerritsz Lansingh (Lansinck) was born about 1610 in the province of Overijssel, Netherlands to Gerrit Lansinck. Elizabeth (Lysbet) was also born in the Netherlands about 1615 to Hendrick Ten Cate.

Gerrit was a bakker (baker) by trade. He and Elizabeth were married in the mid-1630’s. They had 6 children:

Aeltje – 1637 Gijsbertje- 1639 Hilletje – 1650
Gerrit – 1640 Hendrick - ~1650 Johannes

Gerrit kept a cash book for his business – which is still in existence today. Along with figures he also wrote personal information, poetry and religious thoughts. For example, in 1643 he wrote:

He who trusts in God, will neither dread nor danger find
Put your hope in Him, and have no fear of mortal kind

In 1644:
One man is taking his writing in his hand, And is writing there with his intellect
And writes down with diligence, As it has to be done according to the demand

Other information found from the records of Hasselt:

- In May 1635 he sold the Vinken house behind the canal to Arent Gerrits.
- He was mentioned in Hasselt (Overijssel) July 1637 having not obeyed the rules for delivering grain into the mill, he was fined for that.
- April 1639 – Gerrit and Lysbet bought from Evert Lamberts a house and garden lying on the edge of Rainbow Alley and the canal. He allowed the Lamberts to live there in an adjacent room.
- Also in 1639 – Gerrit was involved in an unknown legal matter with Griete Wessels.
- In June 1640 they sold this house and bought a more expensive one, purchased from Jan Lepharts which is near the stonebridge. They borrowed 350 gold guilders to do this, at an interest of 6%. From this place Gerrit also conducted his bakery business.
- In 1644 he bought 6 guilders worth of English damasks from his neighbor Herman Bos
- He put in a request to the city council in 1648 to get a permit for renovating his bakery. He wanted to build along the round city wall, but in a square rather than rounded. Roof work was completed in 1649. The city council went to see this work, and decided that it was so beautiful, as well as an attribute to the city, that they presented Gerrit with roof tiles.
- In 1649 his father died, and he had to get money from his mother for his funeral.
- In 1650 he was living next to Lucas the bricklayer.
- Cousin Berentje came to live with the family in 1651 for one year, paying a rent of 7 rijksdaalders. She also had to give an apron, a night scarf, a pair of gloves and another rijksdaalder as reimbursement.
- In 1651 his neighbor was Berent the carpenter.

The 1652 tax roll mentions the widow of Gerrit Gerritsen the baker, so he was dead by this point. His children were still quite young, so the appointed guardians were Borchard van Hattum and Meijndert Henrickx (most likely he was Lysbet’s brother). The loss of Gerrit threw the family into poverty. Lysbet was remarried in 1654 to Wolter Albertse Vanden Uythoff. However, the records of the Schepen Court (Municipal court) of Hasselt, dated Jan 31, 1654, reveal Gerrit’s widow made a prenuptial agreement with her 2nd husband regarding the guardianship of Gerrit’s 6 children and the division of Gerrit’s estate to them. This marriage did not offer much financial relief, as Wolter had a lot of debt from his farm. He was brought to the High Sheriff’s Court in 1649 for these debts.

In 1655 Lysbet and her second husband took out several loans to finance the trip to the New Netherlands, but it is a fact that the bakery in Hasselt was not sold (there was a two-year rental contract with baker Jan Jacobs at a rent of 43 gold guilders). The family with 6 children came over to New Netherlands in September 1655 aboard the ‘De Gelderse Bloem'. Elizabeth died in 1679. In order for the children to be eligible for the estate - there needed to be a statement that their father was already deceased, and many people years later took this 1679 statement on the will to mean that this was Gerrit's own will, where it was actually Elizabeth's will, stating that her first husband was already dead, so the children were entitled to the estate. Someone must've incorrectly listed him as Gerrit Frederick Lansing, or it was read that way years later. I'm told it was added in a margin somewhere, so who knows who added it at what time. In any case - the name Frederick makes no sense.
Gerrit’s estate was divided up among their children at this time. They instructed their cousin, Jan Barentse Ten Cate, to collect their father’s inheritance left in the Netherlands. Lysbet’s clothing went to her 3 daughters, and her gold double ring given to Hilletje. Wolter Uythoff wound up remarrying years later.

As for the children:
Gerrit followed in his father’s footsteps and became a baker. He was also a trader, and was married 3 times.
Hendrick became a butcher and married Elizabeth Hollenbeck.
Johannes was a trader and landholder. He married Geertie Van Schaick and died in 1728.
Aeltje married Gerrit Van Slichtenhorst.
Hilletje married Storm Van der Zee.
Gijsbertje married Hendrick Roseboom.

The Lansing house in Hasselt is still standing.

James Lansing - NY

Very cool about the bible - but most likely Frederick is incorrect. Years back I had the fortune to meet with a historian who came to Albany, NY (where the Lansings arrived in 1655 - I still live there) from Hasselt, Netherlands (where the Lansings are from). He had much information on many old Dutch families, including Lansings. Our ancestor had a journal - nearly 400 years old - with much information and scribblings in it that this man got information from.
Gerrit wrote his name - Gerrit Gerritse Lansingh (Lansinck) - which is 'Gerrit, son of Gerrit'. His father died in 1649, and he died about 1652. The name 'Frederick' for Gerrit's father/middle name appears in the 1679 will of Gerrit's widow as almost an after thought. His 1st son was named Gerrit - after the paternal grandfather. The 2nd son was named Hendrick after the maternal grandfather - Hendrick Ten Cate. Gerrit G never came to the New World - his remarried widow and 6 children did.
I will post another reply with a summary I prepared years back for my own genealogy book.
James J. Lansing - NY

Can you tell me if the following Lansings are connected to yours?

Isaac Lansing, b. abt 1834, Johnstown, Fulton Co, N;, d. 1920, buried in Walt's Cemetery, Skate Creek Road, Fine, NY; married Mary Moss (1835-1899).

Isaac had a brother Richard Lansing (1838-1909) who was married to Naomi; they are also buried in Walt's cemetery with their son,John Henry.

Isaac served in the Civil War Nov 1863-May 1866.

Isaac's daughter, Myrtle (b. abt. 1870), married Alexander Thompson (b abt. 1869)

Isaac's parents: James Lansing (b abt. 1807 in NY) and Catherine Lansing (b. abt. 1811). Their children: Isaac, Richard, Sarah, Elizabeth, Moses, Daniel, Hannah, Alfred, James. In 1850, they liaved in Fine, St. Lawrence County, NY. I think at least to 1840 James and Catherine (and children who were born by then) lived in Johnstown.

My family has owned the old Lansing farm in Fine, St. Lawrence County, NY, since 1946. We are not related to the Lansings or Thompsons, but we are very interested in the history of this family. I'm trying to compile a booklet on the history of the farm and a bit about the surrounding area for our family. It is truly a family farmhouse steeped in history - one can "feel" it!!!

Hi Bill.

Thank you for answering my query. I know you are still traveling, but I wanted explain how I came to get this information before you get home so you have all the information before you start looking at your data.

I have been trying to place our Peter Lansing in the correct family for about 13 years. I have posted queries in many places, hoping someone might come across my question and respond. Recently I heard from a woman who found Jennie Lansing's Bible at a sale a few years ago, and when she opened it, she saw the family history and decided to purchase the Bible and try to find the family it belonged to. She was searching a few weeks ago and came across one of my queries. She responded and gave me Peter's parent's names from the Bible, and asked if I would like to have it. What kindness!!!

Anyway, it came to me today, and it actually has the entire family listed back to Frederick Lansing in Holland. I am still not sure I believe that the information is correct for Peter Lansing's mother, but it does list both his mother and his grandmother as Catharine or Catryna Leverse with two different spellings.

I have looked all over to try to find some shred of evidence for this information. I think it is incorrect, as most sources list Levinus, son of Abraham Jacobus, as married to Catharine Vander Heyden. I thought, however, that she died before Peter Lansing's birth in 1812. I have never seen any kind of reference to Peter Lansing, outside of Census documents in 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880, and his grave in Richmondville. The Lansing Bible is the most official evidence I have of his ancestors.

You don't need to respond to this email. I just wanted to tell you what I have learned, and to tell you I appreciate your offer to check your records. I am interested in the book you will publish, so when you are home, please let me know about it.

Thank you again
linda tutt
green bay, wi

Thank you for your reply to my question.

I'm anxious to know if you do have a connection to these Lansings, and would also be very interested in your book when it is available, especially if I can ever connect these ancestors to the rest of the family. I am sure they are related, I just haven't been able to figure out how.

Thanks again.

I am trying to learn more about Hampton S. Lansing, b. abt. 1843 in NY and married Catherine Free abt. 1868. I've found the family on the 1870 census with daughter Grace, b. abt. 1869 in NY but cannot find any more until Catherine is living with her father (Amos T. Free, Sr.) in Albany, NY at the time of the 1900 census.

Thank you.

I hope someone can help me. I have a great-grandmother, Jennie Lansing Hallenbeck. Jenny was born in Walworth County, Wisconsin 16 September 1860 to Peter Lansing and Harriet Smith. She married Charles Hallenbeck in 1887 at Schoharie County, probably in Richmondville or Cobleskill. They resided in Cobleskill and had three sons, Fred (b. 1893), Harold (b. 1895) and Karl (b. 1898). They later resided in Otsego County, where Jennie died 14 July 1829 at Oneonta.

According to Jennie's Bible, her father Peter Lansing was born 3 November 1812 at Shodack, New York. Her mother Harriet Smith was born 1829 at Seward, New York. She also lists Peter's parents as Levinus Lansing and Catryna Leverse of Albany. I have never seen a marriage between Levinus Lansing and Catryna Leverse. Jennie's Bible also says that Levinus was born 1748 at Albany, so Catryna must have been quite a bit younger than him, if this information is accurate.

Based on census documents, Peter must have been married before he married Harriet, as he has a son listed that is only a few years younger than she. Peter and Harriet lived in Cherry Valley in 1850. By 1860, the family was in Walworth County, Wisconsin. By 1870 they were back in Richmondville. I have no explanation for this migration.

I am hoping someone recognizes some of the people from this family.

Was this the John Lansing that was once a Mayor of ALbany NY? I once came across a book of mayors of the city of Albany and low and behold there was a John Lansing , there was a reference to the way this gentleman had passed which was described in this book as being way-Laid. Let me know if this is him , I believe we may have some pertinent information in my geneology from the dutch settling in the colonie/ albany farmsteads that totalled close to 80 in a very sparse area along consaul rd.

Hi Bill,

Thank you so much for checking. The information I have is that Gerrit I Lansing was born on 7/8/1745 at Batten Kill, New York and died at Perryville, New York on 12/24/1837. Gerrit married Sarah Sharp on 2/28/1768. It appears that they had at least one son named Abraham Wendel Lansing around 1786.

Gerrit I Lansing was a private in the American Revolution. I don't have a date of birth for Levinus Lansing (Gerrit's father) but maybe Johannes and Levinus were brother?

Sorry, to bother you... I was just wondering if anyone knew of a Levinus... Thank you again for your reply and research.

Kathy

I have a Gerrit I Lansing that was born in 1745 in Battenville, NY and I believe his father was Levinus Lansing. I would imagine with a name like "Levinus" there may be a connection. Do you have any information regarding your family prior to moving to MI? I have the Lansing in NY and then moving to IA.

Thanks again for your reply.
As an addendum, I should clarify that the 1873 (corrected from 1871 in original) marriage to Astella was his second, and that I also have the original of his first...in 1867 to Sarah Reid. She died in childbirth March 16th 1873, and apparently Abram was not one to waste time, as he married Astella Huested that same September.

Abram E Lansing married Astrella Huested in Albany, Sept 28th, 1873. They were married by Frank Rogers Morse, pastor, and the marriage was witnessed by Daniel M Huested and Gerrit Lansing. I know this because I just read it off to you from the original marriage certificate. I am Harrison Bartlett Lansing IV, Harrison's great-grandson. Abram was born on August 9th, 1844 to Anna Maria Lansing (ne Rector, born in 1811)) and Gerrit Yates Lansing (born in 1802).

Harrison was born to Abram and Astrella on May 3rd, 1869

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suspect that this may never be read...but if it is, message me. I am the caretaker of the Lansing family bible...and of the birth/death records of Gerrit's line of it dating back to mid 1800's.

I am traveling out of the country for the next 30 days and don't have my family tree data with me. I will check when I get home. I think I have your connections, but that is from memory of over 6,000 family names. By the way, I am in the process of publishing the entire Lansing family genealogy along with descendant trees back for those families who married into the Lansing family in the early days.

Roger,

Unfortunately, I am at the same brick wall. There were so many "John Lansing's" in the New York area. I have 100 of them in my data base.

Bill

Kathy,

I have gone back and forth about Gerrit "I" or Gerrit "J." Lansing. Either way, Gerrit was married to Sarah Scherp. Your dates match exactly with mine. Interestingly, I am a descendent from this couple and have both forward information to me (age 63) and backwards to Hendrick Gerritse Lansing from Hasselt, Netherlands. I do not have Levinus as Gerrit J. Lansing's father, but have Gerrit Jacobse Lansing as his father and Elizabeth Van Schaick as his mother. I am pretty sure of my data.

If you would like to see more, please let me know you e-mail address.

Bill Lansing

Judy,

I have gone through my Lansing family data base, but can't connect your family in Michigan back to New York. However, I did find the Lansing family that you refer to in the 1870 and 1880 census. Louis (shoe maker)and Elizabeth with children Levinus and Nellie in the 1870 Chesterfield, Michigan census, but in the 1880 Osceola, Michigan census, Louis is not shown; but Elizabeth is listed as Mary in that later census with children Levinus, Nellie, Helen and Annie. I also find Levinus in the 1900 Greenland, Michigan census married to Maggie (b. Maine with parents from Ireland).

One census shows Louis as born in New York (1870) while the 1880 census shows him as indirectly born in Ohio. I suspect the 1870 is correct.

If you have more information, I will be glad to dig further.

Bill Lansing

Kathy,

I am sorry, but I can't trace your family in my data base. I have a Gerrit I. Lansing born in Albany, New York on 4/26/1752, m. Alida Fonda and Maria Van Arnhem.Gerrit's father was Johannes Jacobse Lansing b. about 1718 in albany New York; Johannes was married to Martje Huyck in 1746. If you have additional information, I will check further.

Bill Lansing
