LANSING FAMILY JOURNEY

have spent the last several years compiling my direct Lansing Family line back to Holland as well as the indirect Lansing lines descending from Frederick Lansingk from Holland in the late 1600's. I have over 5,500 direct and indirect connections to the Lansing line originating from up-state New York. It was a massive undertaking, but I am now mostly complete. I am willing to share my work and exchange information post dating the census information after 1930. I will check the forum frequently and ask that you post your contact information on e-mail and I will contact you. At some point, I will write the 3rd edition to my Lansing Family Journey book.
Is anyone familiar with Peter Lansing? He served in Wisconsin as a Freewill Baptist minister. I am President of the Wisconsin Freewill Baptist Historical Society and am trying to find descendants of deceased ministers, like I am, in the hopes of learning more about these people as well as possible orchestrating a “reunion” of the descendants of these ministers in 2008. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Peter Lansing of Otsego and Schoharie Co, NY

In our family we have a Peter Lansing, born about 1812, most likely in Otsego or Albany County, NY. He was married twice. I have no information about his first wife. His second wife was Harriet, last name unknown. Peter was listed on the 1850 census in Cherry Valley, Otsego Co, NY, with a birthdate of about 1813. His spouse was Harriet Lansing, with a birthdate of about 1829 in NY. Also listed was James Lansing, born about 1836, and Edgar Lansing, born about 1841, both in NY. Presumably these children were from Peter's first marriage. Also in the household were Clemen and Eleanor Renoe. Clemen was born about 1787, and Eleanor born about 1786, both in NY.

On the 1860 census, Peter and Harriet Lansing were listed in Sharon, Walworth Co, WI. Their household at that time included Elbert Lansing, born 1850 in NY, Emily Lansing, born 1853 in Illinois, and Jane Lansing, born 9.12.1860 in Walworth Co, WI.

In 1870 the Lansings were back in NY, this time in Richmondville, Schoharie Co. Peter, with a birthdate of abt 1815 in NY, Harriet, with a birthdate of abt 1829 in NY, Elbert, born abt 1851 in NY, Louisa born abt 1854 in IL, and Jenny, born abt 1860 in WI.

In 1880, Harriet is living as mother-in-law in the household of Edward K. Joslyn, and his wife Louise L. Joslyn in Richmondville. Edward K. Joslyn, with a birthdate of abt 1846 in NY, Louise L., with a birthdate of abt 1854 in IL, Lloyd Joslyn, with a birthdate of abt 1877 in NY (son), Louise Joslyn, with a birthdate of abt 1874 in NY (daughter), and Harriet Lansing, with a birthdate of abt 1832 in NY (mother-in-law).

Peter is not found on the 1880 census.

Peter and Harriet Lansing are buried in lot 28-2 in Richmondville Cemetery. The dates on their tombstones read Harriet b. 1834 and d. 1898. Peter b. 1812 and died 1894.

According to baptismal records of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Richmondville 1867-1892, Jenny Lansing, youngest daughter of Peter and Harriet, was record #126 on 5 April 1879. Jenny married Charles Hallenbeck, and they resided in Schoharie County. They later moved to Otsego Co. Jenny died 14 July 1929 in Oneonta. Charles and Jenny had four children, three of whom lived to be adults. They were Fred Lansing Hallenbeck, born 1893, Harold Hallenbeck, born 1895, and Karl Hallenbeck, born 1898.

I am hoping someone recognizes some of these individuals and may know the origins of Peter and Harriet Lansing. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

linda tutt
green bay, wisconsin

Gerrit I. Lansing married Marritje/Marie Van Deusen sometime before 1791.

They had at least three children:
Jacob, born December, 1791
Helena, born November, 1795
Geertruy/Gertrude, born April 7, 1798. (my great-great-grandmother)

All were baptised in the Boght-Becker Dutch Reformed Church of Colonie, Albany County, New York.

The family apparently resided at Charleston, Mongtomery County, New York, where Gerrit appears to have been a founding settler.

I am looking for the parentage of both Gerrit and Maria.
Edward S. Lansing, M.D. of Watertown, NY; Vineland, NJ, Burlington, NJ 1800s.

Sharing a found tidbit from a pamphlet in my possession - Early Physicians of Vineland, NJ., pub 1903 by Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society. Not interested in him myself, only have the location in common.
Pg 25"Edward S. LANSING, M.D. had been a successful physician in Watertown, N.Y. He came to Vineland in 1867 with his family for change of climate, not proposing to engage in medical practice. He did, however, occasionally assist his professional brothers in consultation. He purchased a fruit farm and a cranberry bog, and later engaged in railroad building. IN 1874 he removed to Burlington, N.J. and engaged in medical practice. He was stricken with paralysis and died a few years later."

Vineland, according to the introduction, in 1861 was an almost unbroken tract of wilderness when one "Mr. Charles K. Landis proposed to establish his new colony." It began to attract those from the north seeking a place of milder climate. After the Civil War, it also attracted discharged soldiers seeking employment, new homes and a change of occupation.
No need to contact me. I have no other info on this person and don't desire any. Happy hunting !

James Lansing of Gansevoort NY b. abt 1878

I suspect that this man may be my relative also as my Lansing family lived in that area around that time also.
I have the following names from that same generation who I have no spouses for who were all siblings of my 3rd great grandfather David Lansing. I also have no children's names for his siblings either and it is possible due to the place and date that James could be a nephew of my David.
If James is a nephew to David then these male names are possibilities for the father of James but is just a wild hunch or rather an educated guess: Sanders/Saunders Lansing, Eugene H.(possibly Hungerford) Lansing and Albert Lansing. These brothers had a sister named Catherine b. abt 1841 ; my family bible states that they were all of "Northumberland" which is I believe part of Gansevoort or Vice Versa. I went there recently and both are small villages adjacent to one another. My Lansing family, David Lansing was the son of George Lansing and Harriet Schermerhorn; George's sister Susan Lansing was married to Herman Melville's Uncle Peter Gansevoort after Gansevoort's first wife died. Peter Gansevoort was the son of the famous Gen'l Peter Gansevoort of Fort Stanwix fame next to which stands a statue of the same. Please email me at my above addy and perhaps we can sort this out together. Elizabeth Lansing

LANSING Biography Found

Dear Lansing Board listeners,

On a recent trip to a bookstore, I found a Biography of a Grace LANSING. I got this book for the purpose of Grace's second marriage, to Gerard LAMBERT. I have LAMBERT's in my ancestry. I did not pay for this book. The bookstore I found it at ia a free bookstore and more info on the bookstore can be found at www.bookthing.org. After reading this Biography, it doesn't have any ancestrial ties to my LAMBERT's and I will be happy to do lookups and/or send this book to the rightful decendants. This book also has "LANSING" pictures.

Surnames in book:

LAMBERT
MULL
LANSING
MOFFET
COXE

Sincerely,
Doug TRACE

I am looking for information on my grandmother's grandmother. Her grandmother's name according to family tree I have was Catherine Lansing daughter of Wendell and Eliza Lansing. In searching I found that her headstone says Emiline not Catherine?? Anyway their was a Wendell Lansing that started newspapers in the Clinton and Essex County areas of NY, and he died at the same time as the Wendell Lansing that is my g,g,g,g,grandfather. So I believe that they are the same person, But having hard time finding proof. If anyone has any info or can make out this message I would greatly appreciate it.

Robert Lansing, Secretary of State and wife Eleanor ?

Robert Lansing and his wife Eleanor ? (do you know her surname? please write to me and tell me; thank you) have stately photographs of themselves hanging in the study or parlor of the Lansing Manor in North Blenheim, N.Y. in the Catskills along the bank of the Hudson River which is now owned and operated by the N.Y. Power Authority. The mansion on umpteen acres once owned by the Chancellor of State John Lansing Jr. who was one of our nation's founding fathers and sat on the First Continental Congress (though did not sign the Constitution due to his fear of too strong a central gov't like Gr. Britain had had over the colonies) is open for tours and contains many of the original family artifacts.
The huge red barn on the property has been converted to a museum displaying the creation of electricity by hydro power
from the Hudson river. The mansion was originally built by the prominent political figure for his daughter Frances Lansing who married Jacob Sutherland who apparently is reported to be somehow related to Washington Irving the author of Sleepy Hollow written about the Catskills. A tourguide told me that after showing me through the mansion that once belonged to my fourth great grandfather's brother John Lansing Jr. my ancestor is Dr. Abraham Gerrit Lansing whose portrait is in the hallway with John's and their brother Gerrits as well. Robert Lansing is related to these men as well and served as the second secty of State to Pres. Woodrow Wilson around the time of WW 1 years later.

correction re: Susan Abrahamse Lansing's parentage

Please note that in the book entitled: The Gansevoorts of Albany by Kenny, there is an error on page 184. In actuality
Susan Lansing's father is Abraham Gerrit Lansing. He is Not
her grandfather but her father. I don't know if the author is still living as her book was published in 1969. It is really an excellent work and filled with great genealogical information on the Lansings of Albany and their connection with the infamous Gansevoort family. The Lansings were known largely for their civic service filling many community political offices on a local and state and federal level. The Gansevoorts were indeed very wealthy due to their income as merchants.
The two families were indeed among the most prominent in the city of Albany. This Lansing line settled in Albany circa
1640.

Lansing and Herman Melville connection

Susan Lansing, daughter of Dr. Abraham Gerrit Lansing and second wife to Peter Gansevoort brings a type of relationship between the Lansings and Melvilles by her marriage to Peter Gansevoort (son of Col. Peter Gansevoort of Rev. war fame).
Peter Gansevoort (son of the above Col.) was married first to Mary Sanford. After her death he married Susan Lansing who was about 39 at the time and had never before been married.
Peter Gansevoort was the biological uncle of Herman Melvilled through his sister Maria Gansevoort (Herman's mother) who married Allan Melville. This was the first generation of the Melvill line to take on the added "e" at the end to distinguish their family line from the others of the same surname (Melvill/Melville). Arrowhead the home of the famous author of Moby Dick, Typee, White Jacket, Billy Budd, is open for tours in Pittsfield, Mass. and I understand has a regular family reunion for those related to Herman Melville.
A wonderful very large portrait of this man who was brother to John Lansing Jr.,Chancellor of N.Y., hangs in the foyer of the Lansing Manor in North Blenheim, N.Y. about fifty miles or more southwest of Albany,N.Y. It was created around 1804-7 I believe and shows him as a young professional and is of his profile.
Another portrait of his profile was created years later when he was about middle-aged perhaps 40 or older showing him a bit heavier with coarser features, with his hair still dark but not as full. This picture can be found in a little yellow book which you can purchase online I believe for only four dollars written by Stephen Bielinski (forgive me if I've misspelled the name); simply type in Abraham Yates Jr. and you should find a link to it eventually or use the author's name better yet.
Abraham G. Lansing was the son-in-law of Abraham Yates Jr. and his portrait in middle-age can be found in this book on A.Yates Jr. and reveals Yates' amazing career in the political affairs of his day which was topped off by his being instrumental in the rallying of the colonists in Albany,N.Y. to free the colonies from the tyranny of British rule in pre-revolutionary America.
I would like to note that while researching online recently I found an error in regard to the name of Abraham Lansing. As I had stated earlier this Abraham Gerrit Lansing is not to be confused with his grandson Abraham "Abe" Lansing (atty) and husband of Catherine "Kate" Gansevoort Lansing. I recall that while searching through the online files of either the Schenectady or Saratoga Historical Socty I found a picture of Abe Lansing which was being portrayed as the portrait of Dr. Abraham Gerrit Lansing. You can verify I am right by going to the Lansing Manor and seeing the true portrait of Dr. Abraham Gerrit Lansing done in profile mode and the much later photo taken of the younger Abe Lansing his grandson who has a moustache and faces front in his portrait which are as different as night and day. In contrast, atty. Abe Lansing's picture, a very similar looking one resembling the portrait that is online actually but which is named incorrectly using his grandfather's name of Abraham G. Lansing, can also be found in Alice P. Kenny's book, The Gansevoorts of Albany between pages 132 and 133, plate number 25 where he is found sitting in his law office as a middle aged man with his typical full handle bar moustache taken with black and white film in the late 1800's or early 1900's. He is sitting in his leather chair with his face at 3/4 view.

Dutch surnames and given names in general; also Lansing/Lansingh

; I have discovered that my Lansing line varies in spelling between Lansing and Lansingh, the latter being the spelling of the old Dutch way of writing the surname.
I have also found it interesting to note that the females in the Dutch lines took their father's first name automatically as their middle names as did their male siblings thus allowing an easier tracing of their parentage on their paternal side. Often they took their mother's maiden name for a middle name however instead it appears.
Note in Susan Lansing's name their appears the name of her father Abraham with -se at the end which I am most sure means "of" or "from" denoting she is his daughter, thus
Susan Abrahamse Lansingh is the original Dutch spelling I've seen. Does anyone know if Santje is the Dutch btw for Susannah or Susan? I would love to have my curiosity satisfied regarding that. Also, does anyone know if Tanneke is the Dutch for Susannah or Susan? I believe the Dutch Reformed Church of Albany gave Susanna Yates Lansing the two names of Santje Tanneke but later she is referred to by Susanna which I can't help but think must be the anglicized version if not the exact translation of one of the two obviously Dutch given names. Any comments would be most appreciated.

Atty. Abraham "Abe" Lansing husband of Catherine Kate Gansevoort

A book entitled: The Gansevoorts of Albany by Alice P. Kenny
gives detailed information on this couple. Kenny refers to the Gansevoorts as patricians throughout the book and to the Lansings as Plebians which comes off as judgmental for any Lansing who reads it as well as looking rather silly in the year 2005 many years after the books publication. All is forgiven however as Ms. Kenny has created a wonderful work which provides a great "read" for anyone of the Lansing or Gansevoort clan. In short, Abe was Christopher Yates Lansing's son who was Dr. Abraham Gerrit Lansing's son.
Catherine Gansevoort Lansing was the daughter of Peter Gansevoort by his first wife Mary Sanford; his second wife was Susan Lansing, sister to Christopher Yates Lansing. This made Abe Lansing a nephew to Susan Lansing by blood.
When Susan Lansing married Catherine Gansevoort's widowed father, Peter, then Catherine became considered briefly a "cousin" to Abe by marriage so when they married one another Kenny states that Abe Lansing married his cousin Kate Gansevoort but it is a stretch of terms; just FYI.
More info on this can be obtained by emailing Elizabeth Ann Lansing at familytree-writer@juno.com

Abraham G. Lansing marr. Santje/Tanneke (Susanna) Yates

There is a huge error in Claude Munsell's Annals of Albany
which states my fourth Great Grandfather Dr.Abraham Gerrit Lansing's wife as another Susanna however genealogists of current times state otherwise that Santje/Tanneke also known as Susanna (Yates, dau. of Abraham Yates Jr.) is the correct wife. I believe the Historical Society in Schenectady and other area historical societies can confirm this. Just a FYI comment; I went wild for over fifteen or more years trying to sort this out. For more info, you may contact me at
familytree-writer@juno.com My maiden name is my legal name now which is Elizabeth Ann Lansing (no longer Hughey)

I am looking for information about Thomas (Tom) Lansing and William (Will) Lansing, brothers who lived in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area in 1880-1930 time frame. Both were the sons of James and Maria (Walker) Lansing of Greene, NY. Tom married Carrie Weyand, and William H. Lansing married Hattie Bates.

I know that Will and Hattie had three kids: Ruth, William and Leona, though Leona died when she was one year old. Ruth married someone by the last name Wall. Hattie died in 1894, so he may have married a second time. He may have moved to Michigan around 1860. His wife's name was Elizabeth Wendell, though in a later census he is listed as married to a Catherine. His brother's name was Andrew, and his father may have been Gerrit. I would like any information anyone may have on Ephraim or his family.
Peder Johannes (Pederson) Lansing

Peder Johannes Lansing was born Peder Johannes Pederson on 7-28-1878 in Bode, Iowa. The family name was changed to Lansing in about 1901. Lansing was an Americanization of the Norwegian famr name, Landsaas.
Peder married Mary (or Marie) Reno in Bode. They had eight children--Margorie, Glen, Beryl, Phyllis, Doris, Emile, Orva, and Francis. I believe Peder and Mary moved to California and both died there. I have information about the Lansing faimly I would like to share. Sincerely, Sandy
