thank you!

So I probably have some ancestors living then? from Sarah (Cressey/ Cressy ) Lapham ?

that would be great since most of the 'Cressey' line has died out.. my line is the only line from Michigan, from Sarah's father (she had a brother named Charles)..... her father had a brother named Samuel, but his children looked like they never reproduced....

now I will have to go and figure out who is living from Sarah Lapham's line.

thank you very much :)

In case you need to view my heritage before sending the copy,

I will start with my gggg granddaughter of sabra daughter of Ludlow E Lapham Jr, son of Ludlow E Lapham Sr, son of Elikiam and Rachel Harris, so of Pazzi and Bethany Foster, son of Benjamin and Lydia Page, 3 generations of Johns, son of John Labham, son of John Labham, son of Simon Lapham and Elizabeth Harrison

what is amazing is two months ago I didnt even know my ggg grandparents names and now I can trace the Laphams to its English origins. Any additional information you can help me with would be wonderful. Also how exactly is Susan B Anthony related to the Laphams?

Obituary, Amanda “Pease” Wheeler Lapham, 1803 – 1869, Hamilton & Eaton, Madison County, NY
Oneida Dispatch, Oneida, NY, May 07, 1869

Eaton (Madison County, NY), - Mrs. Amanda Lapham died at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. L. Joslin, in Eaton, April 22 (1869), at the advanced age of 92. Mrs. Lapham was one of the first settlers of the town of Lebanon, her husband, Daniel Wheeler, being one of the most enterprising of the pioneers, and by whose untimely death in 1806 the wife lost a truly kind companion and community a worthy citizen. Widowed, and the mother of five young children, yet like the true woman, as all our pioneer mothers were, she courageously bore her trials and managed her affairs with enterprising assiduity.

Mrs. Wheeler was one of the seven who composed the first Baptist church of Hamilton when Elder Olmsted was pastor, and from that day until the close of her long, eventful life, she was an earnest, consistent Christian. In later life she became the wife of Deacon Duty Lapham, who was long and honorably known to the people of Hamilton and vicinity. Mrs. Lapham was the mother of the wife of Rev. Jonathan Wade, missionary to Burma. Remarkable vigor, symmetry, and activity of body, as well as strength and clearness of mind, characterized Mrs. Lapham in her old age, and which did not fail her until her last illness, which was not of long duration. End of newspaper obituary.

Authors notes – Mrs. Lapham was actually the step mother of Deborah B. Lapham, the wife of Rev. Jonathan Wade. It is not clear to me if Duty Lapham had other children, but I assume he did. In fact, the above mentioned son-in-law, Lester Joslin, wife’s name was Mary, who must have been another child of Mr. Lapham. Clearly, it is not a child of Daniel and Amanda Wheeler. If anyone has knowledge of the other Lapham children, I would appreciate your sharing the information with me.

Children of Amanda (Pease – maiden name) & Daniel Wheeler are:

Erastus Daniel Wheeler, was born 28 Nov 1795, Canaan, Columbia County, NY and died 08 Aug 1863, Hamilton, Madison County, New York. He married Elizabeth Upham, 1832, Hamilton, Madison County, New York. She was born 1808, Hamilton, Madison County, New York and died 13 Aug 1868, Hamilton, Madison County, New York.

Edward Wheeler, was born 25 Jul 1798, Lebanon, Madison County, New York and died 08 Sep 1868, Broullitts Creek, Edgar County, IL. He married Narissa Jones, 25 Apr 1820, Clark County, IL. She was 25 Jun 1801, East Lebanon, York County, Maine and died 26 Jan 1882, Broullitts Creek, Edgar County, IL.

Sylvester Wheeler, was born 08 Mar 1801 in Lebanon, Madison County, New York, and died 14 Jan 1881 in Otselic, Chenango County, NY. He married Anna Pierce abt. 1826 in Otselic, Chenango County, NY, daughter of Ruth. She was born 1798 in Connecticut, and died 17 Oct 1887 in Otselic, Chenango County, NY.

Amanda Wheeler, was born 07 Jul 1803, Lebanon, Madison County, New York and died abt. 1875, Otselic, Chenango County, NY. She married Holland Turner, Jul 1824, Hamilton, Madison County, NY. He was born 09 Nov 1798, Walpole, Cheshire County, New Hampshire and died abt. Sep 1869, Otselic, Chenango County, NY. Rev. Holland Turner was a graduate of Colgate University’s 3rd graduating class of 1824 and was involved in church work in Otselic.

Fanny Wheeler, was born 21 Nov 1805 in Lebanon, Madison County, New York, and died 07 Feb 1878 in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio. She married Peter Latimer 01 Jun 1826 in Homer, Madison County, NY, son of Picket Latimer and Eunice. He was born 30 Mar 1800 in Waterford, New London County, Connecticut, and died 07 Feb 1878 in Norwalk, Huron County, Ohio. Peter Latimer was a graduate of Colgate University’s 5th graduating class of 1826. However he eventually pursed a carrier in the newspaper business in Ohio rather that the Baptist theology taught at Colgate.

Note:
Amanda Pease (Maiden Name)
Amanda Wheeler (Daniel Wheeler, 1st Marriage)
Amanda Lapham (Deacon Duty Lapham, 2nd Marriage)

This Richard Wheeler’s 4th Great Grandmother
Would anyone have any info on this Lapham family? They lived in California. Macy's dates are 1874 - 1960, Beulah 1880 - 1954. I am interested in this family as Beulah is a distant relative, and I would like to make contact with any descendants. Have just found out that Macy was a soil scientist and surveyed the west.

As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them. I recently acquired two photos, that have the name LAPHAM on them.

On the back of the first one, is a little girl with a full head of dark hair. On the back is written: "Mable Agnes Lapham daughter of Silas N. Lapham of Salam, Mass. One and a half years old."

The second one was taken in Bristol, Conn. according to the person who wrote on it. The rest is as follows: "William and George. Brothers to Silas N. Lapham with Elize. and Rosana Degniault cousins by Aunt Melina. Youngest Sister to the mother of Silas N. at Bristol Conn. Elize 17 years to the right. Standing, Rosana 16 yeasrs old. Taken Feb. 1900 at Bristol Conn."

I'd like to locate family to send these to.
Lapham - Chase

What do you think of this data format? I arrange my data in ahnentafel form, rather than by a computer genealogy program. It wastes little space and is flexible because it allows me to add an extra line of information for any numbered individual.

However, ahnentafels become visually overwhelming by the 8th generation. The format below combines the conciseness, the room for additions, the rational numbering system, leaving rooom for the very large humbers of early generations, AND puts all male members of a line of descent on a single page, terminating in the marriage of a female with that surname into another patrynymic line.

I don't think it could be more concise or flexible, but wonder about its clarity. Can you suggest changes which would improve the format? This sample line belongs to my friend, Jim Lawrence.

===========

LAPHAM-CHASE

Laphams lived in Biddenden and Bethersden, Kent, near Tenterden, where the Tildens lived. Or was he the man who died about 1648 in MA? Was he just back in Kent for a visit? Are there records in of Thomas 1644-1648 in MA? Did he first marry Elizabeth . . . and have 3 children [William 1632, Elizbeth 1633 & John 1634] before his death in June 1644? Perhaps wills of family members would distinguish two Thomas Laphams.

Since several Laphams lived in Canterbury, were they clerics?
Did they attend Oxford or Cambridge? I have not yet checked the college rolls, since they were not direct ancestors.
Just wondering if you know if your John Lapham had a son called William who married a Catherine Summer (nee Doyle) at Emu Bay in 1869. I suspect William's parents were John & Julia Lapham but can't find any solid evidence in the Tas BDM Indexes which only show three children for this couple - a daughter Fanny b:1859 at Emu Bay, a son in 1844 and another daughter in 1851 both at Horton and both 'given names' recorded as "Name not Recorded". I suspect the 1844 son was called John who married Hannah Woodward at Emu Bay in 1865.

Also suspect there was another daughter Julia b: 1845 who married Geo Dodson at Emu Bay in 1863.

I'd appreciate any information about this family and William's possible link to them.

Asa Lapham and Hannah Aldrich had a son named Eli Lapham b. 1791 d. May 1864 in Calhoun Co. Michigan

Eli Lapham married Rachel Ruth Crandell (daughter of Luke Crandell)
Rachel b. 1800 d. June 17, 1877 in Barry Co.

Did anyone figure out where Ethan Lapham stood in any of the above replies? All the other siblings fit with the family outline from the book "Laphams in Michigan" but Ethan wasn't mentioned.

Does anyone have information on Ethan Lapham, who he married and his childrens names?

I am descended from Alfred Lapham and his son Simon. Two of my cousins and my uncles still live on Alfred's property. The old William Lapham house is a mile away. I may go up there tomorrow and I will get a picture of the house for you.

I am attaching the 3-page letter. It's a bit boring--sounds like our ancestors were very practical people. I am also enclosing a page from a RI genealogy book about the Laphams.

Let me know if anything is not readable. I would be interested in reading the letter you have.

Heidi
hallen4040@yahoo.com

I do have a letter from Arnon regarding how great life in Iowa was.

William's house is still standing in Burrilleville, RI. I have a copy of the inventory of his estate.

I would be happy to email a copy of the letter and the inventory if you are interested.
Re: David Lapham

Given that your post is nine years old, I'm doubtful this will get to you, but Sarah Dunkin was the daughter of Thomas Dunkin [abt. 1743-Dec 15, 1825] and Sarah Rider [abt. 1741 - 15 May 1812]. Thomas and Sarah are buried in the Bear Market cemetery, Market Lane, Stanford, Dutchess County, NY. The cemetery is also sometimes called the Sutherland cemetery, as most of the people buried there are Sutherlands [two of the Dunkin daughters married Sutherlands]. The stones of both Thomas and Sarah are still standing and legible.

I do not know the parentage of Thomas Dunkin, but Sarah Rider was the daughter of John Rider [b. abt 1720, possibly in Tiverton, R.I, died Dec 1791, in Dutchess County, NY. She was probably the child of his first wife, Freelove Hill, but may have been the child of his second wife, Rachel. Sarah was born in either Dutchess County, NY or in Rhode Island, where the family seems to have come from.

The Dunkin name was variously spelled Dunkin or Duncan. It's spelled Dunkin in John Rider's will. It's spelled both ways in Thomas Dunkin's will. The name is spelled Dunkin on Thomas and Sarah's tombstones. He's on the 1790, 1800 and 1810 censuses as Duncan.

The name Rider was variously spelled Rider or Ryder. The Dutchess county branch of the Riders seemed to have settled on the Rider spelling sometime in the early 1800's.

There were numerous Laphams and Riders in the towns of Washington and Stanford in Dutchess, but I haven't found many Dunkin/Duncans. The David Lapham family emigrated from Dutchess to Ohio before the 1820 census.

Hope this gets to you and is useful

Susan

Wow, yes I'm very interested. Which of William's children are you descended from? I don't know much about Arnon so reading a letter written by him would give me some insight. I also have a transcribed copy of a letter that Louis sent to Arnon describing the death of their father, William, that I would be happy to send to you. Do you by any chance have a photo of William's house? I can't believe it's still in exsistance. Would that be where Arnon grew up? Thank you, Lynne lynnemike(at)earthlink.net
