The Nicosia immigration book, "Il Cuore nella Valigia" was published in March '06.
It is in Italian, but I'm told, someone is going to translate it to English.

Alberto Micalizzi used a photo taken by my uncle of my family for the cover of his book on Nicosia immigration: "The heart in the Suitcase".

----------------------------------------------

After my husband and I returned from our first trip to Sicily and Italy in June 2001, I found an email waiting for me...It was from Alberto Micalizzi of Livorno, Italy. His post said he was researching a book on immigrants from Nicosia, Enna, Sicily, the birthplace of my grandparents..

In researching my family history, I have been collecting data on the Nicosians in Chicago. It might not have pertained to my family, but I saved the info anyway. I thought it might be important someday (papers on the church, clubs and festivals, etc.). I also collected over 100 surnames of Nicosians in Chicago.
Over the next few months I sent all the information to Mr. Micalizzi.

When the book was published, Alberto invited us to the presentation of the book to the town. My husband and I attended the ceremony. We met many of the Nicosians, including the mayor.

I was surprised and honored to see one of my family photos was used for the cover of the book.

After all the speeches, I read these words in Italian:
"One hundred years ago, our grandparents left Nicosia for a new life in Chicago .Their voyage continues today with this reunion. Our family is scattered in America, but our heart remains in Sicily."

A few days later, the Messina family was reconnected after 100 years when we met our Nicosian cousins, in Firenze.

Linda Messina Holda
Messina38@aol.com

Possible name variation-Laporte. Chicago, IL. All I know is she was the youngest of 4-6 brothers. All very tall and asthma runs in the family. In her early 20's when the man whom impregnated her walked out, he was possibly a grad student. Family was very supportive of her during pregnancy and choice of adoption. Still seeking some medical history-I'm only getting older and have a family of my own One son-he's tall for his age! Any knowledge or this scenario sounds familur, please contact me.

Joseph. I have found no connection between Salvatore LaPorta and Maria LaPorta but that doesn't mean there isn't one. Maria LaPorta also lived in the Bridgeport - Brighton Park area of Chicago and later at a farm just southwest of the city in what is now known as Alsip, Illinois. Maria had a daughter named Rose, aka Felicia who married Sam Granata - Leodoro. Len

Some of the other names in our Family are Biang, Polito, DeGrazia, LaPorte. My aunts still speak and visit our Cousins in Nicosia. I will be visiting them soon. I am going to try to continue my research but I dont have the time. I wish there was a service that I could pay to track the tree for me.

In 1912, Giovanni Laporto was a laborer living at 290 Hamilton Street (wives not listed this early). James Laporta, asge 30, died 23 January 1947 in Bridgeport, buried in St. Michael's, Stratford, resided with parents John, employed at Remington Rand, and Jennie, living at 56 Gilmore Street. In 1948, Lawrence is living at the same address, he is a City employee
. In 1960 John and Jennie are living in Father Panik Village, which was public housing, they are not in the 1961 or 1962 directories. In 1963 Jennie is at 959 Main Street, Stratford, the Stratford Chronic and Convalescent Hospital (which closed quite a while ago). In 1964 Jennie is gone. There are several Laporta listings in the current telephone directory. Advise if you need other information. Adurey
She married Santo Emanuele who died in 1959. They had five daughters; lived in New York City. Unfortuantely everyone is dead and I have no information whatever. I would love to know my heritage.
Grandfather, born Valguarnera Caropepe, Provincia Enna, Sicilia 6/11/1880. Had 2 sisters Concetta born 6/14/1885 and Giuseppa born 10/1/1882. Found info. on Concetta but nothing on Giuseppa and ancestry of hers. Also, looking for family of grandmother marred to Cristoforo. Her name was Giuseppa Sgroi born same town on 12/23/1879. She had a sister Angela born 9/16/1876 deceased 12/9/1942. She must have some family around to find. Also a brother Gaetano Sgroi born 2/10/1878. My grandfather immigrated to Baltimore, Md. 1911. Two years later sent for Giuseppa and by then a daughter of 7 years old (my mothers sister - Giuseppa called Jenny in U.S.) Name spelled LaPorti in U.S. My mother Mary Rita Laporti Fiori had 4 brothers which 1 I know for sure is deceased. Don't know about rest and their families. They are Tony (deceased), Vincent, Samuel (was a boxer around 1920-30), Carmelo (Charles LaPorti). Lost track of Charles years ago and would love to find he and his family. He married Helen who had Tootsie by another marriage. They had Ronnie and I don't recall whom else. Anyone knowing anything about them, please have them contact me. Thanks loads!! Dolores

LaPorta from Pennsylvania

My Grandfather was Florindo Laporte. However, I think his real name may have been Laporta. They moved to Connellsville, Pennsylvania. They also lived in Adalaid Pennsylvania. My Grandfather was a twin and there were many children. There were also many Carmella's and Marias in the family. They came from Mirrabello Sannettio Combrossia in Italy. There were four sets of twins in the family. I know there was Moses, John, Jim. Don't know if this would help. If any of this may sound familiar, let me know. They moved to New Jersey around 1915. There are many Laportes in Connellsville. On my mother's baptism papers, I found the name was Laporta, which they may have changed.
Rosalie

I recently found out my great-grandparents came from Sicily. It is believed that they were ordered to leave the country. But I don't know why. The came through Ellis Island. I originally thought the came from Italy. My grandmothers name was Mary Jean Handy. Her original name was conchetta maria Laport. She was the oldest of 10 children. The youngest was cameil or camella. When she was 9 she went to work for Montgomery Wards making drapes. She retired from there when she was 65. She married a Milton Handy. They were married in July 1923 in Conn. They had 2 children Milton(junior) and Blanche. They moved to Florida in the 1940's or 1950's, where they both died. Her fathers name was John Laport or Laporta. If they sound familiar please contact me at: mwstates@iwon.com
Thanks
Mary

SEEKING INFO ON ITALIAN ANCESTORS

I am looking for my grandmothers family. I'm new to this so I'm not sure how to start. The name I know her by is Mary Jean Handy. She was born April 28, 1907. I believe her Italian name was conchita but I'm not sure. I know she had 2 sisters one was Suzy and she married Joseph (?) I just knew him as Uncle joey. The other was camille or camillia. I think they were born in Conn. My grandmother married Milton B. Handy in the 1920's. They had 2 children- Milton John born 8-11-32 and Blance Handy born on February 29 1935(?). Mary was full blooded Italian I believe her parents were both born in Italy, but not sure. If anyone is related or knows of her please contact me at MWSTATES@IWON.COM
THANKS! MARY
