Orphans  Dorothy & Audrey LaPorte

Trying to locate information on what happened to the sisters once they left St. John's Orphanage. Here is what St. John's Orphan. shared with me:
both girls were place at St. Johns, coming from Cheboygan County on January 17, 1929

Dorothy LaPorte b: Jan 17, 1918 and discharged from the orphanage on June 6, 1930

Audrey LaPorte b: July 4, 1919 and was discharged from the orphanage on Oct 29, 1931.

Both girls left at separate times, but both would have been 12 to 13yrs old when they were discharged. Could they have been adopted? Servants? Did they eventually get married? Have descendents?

Any help on where to go next or if you know these girls, would love to find out what happened to them?

Thank - you
When you say other Laporte immigrants originated in Belleme France, that is interesting because the main Laporte ancestor in North America, Jacques de Laporte dit St-Georges came from the Belleme region and no other records of Laporte's in that region exist to support any other Laporte emigrating from that region. That area was spared the revolution and war destructions, and records are quite well preserved. I would be very interested in finding out any records you may have that links to another Laporte in this region, that would open up a whole new area of research.

yes, there are other french laportes that are not canadian descendents. they stem from three lines of laportes that emigrated from belleme, france in the late 1880's and early 1900's directly to the united states. they settled in springfield, missouri and now live in about ten different states including new york, massachusetts, virginia, tennessee, arkansas, texas, missouri, kansas, oklahoma, wyoming, montana, oregon, and california.

Regarding your first family grouping, I know that they are not closely related to Sophia Henault LaPorte--if at all. Her siblings were Helena, Louis,Francis, Adelle and Joseph Henault. This branch of the family did not start using "Ano" until quite late acoording to my knowledge.

Your second family grouping appears to be my great-grandfather, Michael LaPorte, and his first chld--my Uncle Louis. The age would be about right. Uncle Louis married Katherine Daniels, lived in Tupper Lake and died in 1965.

Hi. I never heard of a Great-Aunt Addie in our family. You may mean Annie LaPorte, who married Pat Hache. Annie died of cancer at a very young age. She has a daughter-in-law, Pauline Hache, alive in Tupper--widow of Leo Hache. I know her sons, Leo and Ed are dead, as is daughter Ora Hache Mace. Don't know if Theresa is alive--Pauline would know. Best.

I am Gasper and Edna LaPorte's grandson. If you are willing to share what you have found about the family, it would be appreciated. I'll share what I have as well.

Michael John Lewis

This is an old post, so here goes. Donald LaPorte was my Uncle. He died in Phoenix, Arizona a few years ago. My first cousins--his children--all all alive. My mother, Beulah LaPorte Lewis, died at 88 on 1/5/06. Donald and Beulah were the only children of Gasper and Edna Sears LaPorte. My Uncle's fist wife, my Aunt Ruth, is 81 and lives in Sacramento, CA.

On another post, I see that someone is saying that my great-grandfather Michael LaPorte (my namesake) is note buried with his wife Sophia Henault LaPorte at St. Alphonsis Cemetery in Tupper Lake. That is not true. He is buried there--it's just that the monument was never changed.

Michael John Lewis
San Francisco, CA

Looking for any information for the parents of Rose Ann Laport, born 1861 or 1863 in Moores Junction, Clinton Co, NY. Her death certificate states that her parents were John Laport and Emily Morrisey. I have been unable to find them on any census record. The first record I have of Rose is her 1888 Hartford City marriage to Clarence Truax. It was his first marriage and her second. Her first was to (Unknown) Bennett. The first census record she appears on is 1900 in Meriden, New Haven Co, CT, where she states both of her parents were born in NY. Rose m/3 Irving Terrice. She died in 1938 in Meriden. Any clue to her early history would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking for information on George LaPorte who emmigrated from Quebec to Lowell, Massachusetts in 1877. I believe he is my great, great, great Grandfather. He had three sons: Joseph (my great, great grandfather), George and Wilfred (according to my research). I'm trying to confirm that her is the son of Charles LaPorte (b. 1805) and also to find my relatives who are still living in Quebec province. If anyone would like to connect and share information it would be greatly appreciated.

I am also working on Joseph LaPorte's family from Montreal. As you mentioned, I know that he began his family in Detroit. I do have when he became a citizen. He had married a Josephine Bellile(spelling that I have) who was born in MI. One of their daughters,also named Josephine, married my GG Grandfather in Detroit in 1899 and moved to Grand Haven, MI and raised their family there. I do have that information if you are still working on the family tree. I do have other information on some of the other LaPorte family members that I can perhaps help with.

Hi Judy
Sophia Henault's parents were Francois Xavier Joseph Henault(pronounced Ano) and Sophie Colliere or Qualyere. The federal census takers during the 1800's were not very good at spelling French-Canadian names, hence many different spellings for the same name. You will find some of the Henaults spelled Ano or Eno. I have the Henault line back to France as well. The family was pretty well established.
Sophia Colliere becomes a dead end so far. She and Francois were married in Plattsburgh NY in 02/02/1857. I don't have anything on her before then. Francois and Sophia Henault lived in Redford, Town of Saranac Clinton County NY. They are buried at Assumption of Mary Cemetary in Redford. I would guess from my research, 98% of my father's maternal and paternal side settled in the Redford area after moving down from Canada. Apparently they all came down around the 1840's-1850's, briefly to the Plattsburgh-Keeseville area then settling in Redford.

I would like to meet you next time I visit Rose or Diane.
Keep in touch.

Andie
Hi Judy,
Rose Miner Hills is my sister. Diane Hills Townsend is my niece. Andrew was my Father who I was named after. Do I know you? Are you from Cato? We are following the same line. I have alot of material from the LaPorte Henault line which I am putting in a family tree and history for the descendents of my father and mother (Louis Andre Jolicoeur(Miner)and Theresia Hedwig Seibold).
I have most of the Jolicoeur/Laporte lines going back to France through Quebec. I am stuck on the Moise Sorel Dit Laporte/Marie Isabelle Bissonnette portion. I have yet to find there Baptismal or marriage records. Most of their children were born in Redford NY and baptised at Assumption of Mary Church.
Moise and Mary are also buried there according to church records, however my other sister Tillie and I were not able to find the actual burial location on a trip we made last summer. On that same trip we went to Tupper Lake and found the Burial location of Sophia Henault/LaPorte, my great-grandmother, Diane's great-great-grandmother. She has a beautiful Monument with the inscription: Sophia Henault LaPorte, wife of Michael LaPorte. We took a picture of it which will be included in the family history.
I hope to have most of the loose ends tied up by this summer, so I can finally get the history written and distributed to my family. I may have to go to Canada at some point. Tillie and I talked about going together, but I don't think she'll be able to go due to health reasons. If you find any info on the Moise or Moyse Sorel or Sorell dit Laporte/Marie Isabelle aka Mary Bissonnette, especially who their parents were, please let me know. Once I have documentation I will be able to follow the lines back to France.

Andie Miner Waldron

Hello Andie, I am Judy Meagher and yes I live in Cato and work at school with Diane. I'm sure your research is much more complete than what I have. I have Ancestry so I have all the census and some cem, records. I have questions for you. Who were Sophie Henault's parents? If they are in the states I can pull their census records and do you know where they are buried? I sound like I want a lot, I just started on Rose's side the other day. Was pretty successful on the Miners. How did you like the confusion of last names for Charles Miner's wife and for Joseph, Charles father's wife. I have spent much time on the Hills side and was fortunate enough to find all of the wives maiden name so was able to trace them also.
What I do for people, I guess, is to get them interested in their family history by getting them started. Once they have all I can pull for census files and on-line it gives them the push start to dig further. Al least I hope so.
Thank you for allowing me to share in your family heritage. If there is anything I can pull from ancestry. com for you let me know. Hope to hear from you again. Judy

Hello again, I hope I am not gettig to be a pain. The names of Sophis's parents gell with the info I found in 1870. But now the confusion begins.
1880 census for Francis Ano 53 Black Brook, Clinton Co NY
wife Sophia age 46
* Louis   19
* Sophia  18
Lilla   17
Joseph  10
Adaline  6
BUT also 1880
Census for Michael La Port 26 Dannemora Clinton Co NY
* Sophia   19
Louis    1
* Louis    20

I am sure these are the same people, who just managed to be put on the 1880 census twice. I know that the 1880 census was taken from 6/1/180-6/1/1881. I will go back in and look at the top of the census page to be sure I am correct. BUT it sure thru me for a loop when I first saw it.

Also just to confuse matters further in 1900 Sophia Mama is living with her son Joseph and who should be living there also another Sophia Ano b. 1855 listed as a servant. I know I saw her on an earlier census just can't pin it down right now.

There is a book published about the Assumption of Mary's Cem. in redford. I am going to interlibrary loan it, or at least try. It is listing Baptisms, births, death, etc.

PLEASE feel free to e-mail me directly jmeagher13033@yahoo.com Nice to have someone to confirm ideas and thoughts with.
They farmed in Alberta after leaving Ont and moving to N Dakota for a spell. Any info on their daughter Otilda (Tillie) b. 24 Jan 1888 in Greenock Ont and died 23 Sep 1957 in Camrose, Alberta. I was told that she lived longer so am trying to prove she really died in 1957. Anyone with that knowledge please email me. Any info on the other family members Annie, Barbara, Gottliebe, John, Lena, Mary, Michael or Susan's death would also be very much appreciated. Thank you!

I am researching a Bernard LaPorte who was born around 1856 in France. He and his family were living in New Orleans, LA in 1894. He was married to Marie Davezies who was a native of France and had the following children:

Marie Anna LaPorte - married Albert Sorbet
Jeannie LaPorte - I think this one died young
Pauline LaPorte - Bernard Sorbet
Lucy Eliza LaPorte - Fred Ricks
Anna Blanche Gabriel LaPorte (born March 11, 1894) - Leon Sorbet
Leon LaPorte - died at 21, never married
Maurice LaPorte - died as a baby

Does your research indicate that this Bernard LaPorte is the same Bernard LaPorte your researching?

-Laura
