Hi again - based on a quick look, our scroll says they were married 27 Mar, 1721 in Chambly - Jacques was in Canada already (1740?), and the three bans were posted for the marriage here. They would be recorded in the parish records of St. Joseph, Chambly.

Also, it is separately documented that the Laporte's were "of this parish" which was stated as "St-Joseph de Chambly" near the top of the paragraph, and that's definitely in Quebec, as that line is also very well documented.

Other places to check: Ancestry has the Drouin Collection online, here.

Also check with Steve Rock www.saurette.com to see what his scroll says - Steve's scroll is a different "Branche" - the Branch depends on which line of Jacques' children were being documented.

Hi, Kris!

First of all, could you take a look at the scroll and determine whether it's the same as ours? These were generally sold to families around the 1920 timeframe in Canada, and are marked "Imprimerie St. Joseph". They were printed for various branches of the line, thus the title on ours is Branche Jean-Baptiste.

Secondly, our assumption was that Chambly in our scroll always referred to Chambly, Quebec - the fort/outpost where the Carignan-Salieres and the Compagnie franche de la Marine were stationed along with local melice? Do you have any provenance to connect Chambly in France?

Hi, I am writing on behalf of Jean-Guy Leclair who is also related to Jacques Sorette, a soldier from the parish of Monleau, France who married Catherine Laporte (baptised 1721 at Chambly, France).

We have a family tree scroll that was found in the wall of my Great Grandfather’s house in Saskatchewan, Canada.

Best regards, Kristian on behalf of Jean-Guy Leclair
I am looking for information on Barry LaRose i believe he was born in Montreal and joined the Canadian Navy and was stationed in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in 1956 - 1963 and than was stationed in Dartmouth Nova Scotia until he retired from the Navy. I am told his trade in the Navy was a stoker in the boiler room on the ships. If any one has information on him i would love to hear it. I met him in Annapolis Royal at a Natal Day Fair when i was 6 years old and he gave me a hand full of quarters, i did not know why at the time but later in life i was told he was was Dad.

He built the missions at St. Mchaels and Ft. Totten and rebuilt Ft. Totten when it burned down in 1886. He married Nancy Hudson, in Mn,in 1865, history said she was Fench Canadian, but the photos show she has the loks of a full blooded Indian.

We are so hoping to find any information on what happened to Mary LaRose/VanDusen/Ransear. It seems a dead end after 1901. Many sources state she died in 1923/25 but we can't confirm that or any other possible death date. William remarried abt 1906 and we have plenty of other info.
Yes, I think you are correct. Abe eventually died in Nevada State hospital and is buried there. It must have been hard to go through divorce back then and I imagine Abe had some mental problems as I know he suffered badly from having seizures and I imagine it damaged his brain. He couldn't have been a very good husband. It was my understanding that, when he married Nancy or Nanny as I have also heard her called he had a daughter by his first wife who had died. I believe her name was Lucy. Have you ever run across that name in your research. Homer followed the path of his Father and ended up in an institution in Oklahoma, I believe and is buried in Oklahoma. Please email me at margaretmonteleone at hotmail.com I would like to share information. I think Felix was Nancy's child she had before they married. I think Brumley was the name she had when she married Abe LaRose.

My G Grandmother Nancy (Brumley) Larose also had a son besides Homer. I believe that My Grandfather Felix Brumley was actually Felix Larose. I think he took the Brumley name when Abraham and Nancy divorced or separated and Felix moved in with His Grandmother Rebecca Brumley. I see a Harden (Lavase) Larose in the 1900 Census as living with Abe(Lavase) Larose in Pawnee Oklahoma. I wonder if he was also a son of Abe and Nancy.

My grandmother was the daughter of Nancy Larose Hunter, daughter of Octave Larose and Mary Jane Hudson married in Minn. Her pictures and history suggest Hudson was Obigway Indian although the census states French Canadian (I'm from that area and it is common for Indians back then (1945) would obtain out of state drivers license indicating "white" so they could buy booze). Octave Larose and John Hunter were the first white settlers on Graham Island, six miles west of Devils Lake, ND.

Re: LARose Indian FRench blood

Hi Carol,
Yes, it may have been Mohawk that my aunt thought we had as our Indian blood, and my notes actually say "daughter of an Indian Chief" - somewhere in "our" line (which includes LaRose).

While I have nothing specific at the moment on LaRose, I just recently found a minor death mention in old St. Lawrence county newspapers, and did a search on all titles for LaRose, and over 1000 hits came up! Like a rash... I'm thinking now, seeing your "Margaret" in the VEIO family post, that perhaps MY Margaret had come from NY as well!

This is the blurb on "Marie LaROSE ASSELIN" (closely tied to my LaRose line! She's got to be mine...), from the Potsdam Herald (?) for 1899, Jan-Mar: "The other aged person was Marie Larose Asselin, aged 101 years. She was born in Canada, but resided here for fourteen years, by occupation a house keeper. Her father Joseph LaROSE was also born in Canada."

The main link for the old newspaper site (which is a FANTASTIC tool for the northern NY area!) is http://news.nnyln.net/ - and they now have the ability to search ALL of one county at a time, or individually. Check out the Search Methods page, as it can help greatly, or just browse - but I'm guessing you'll find tons of helpful stuff.

As I've recently discovered that some of our lines moved over into St. Lawrence, and even Watertown in Jefferson Co., I'm going to say that we cross branches somewhere! I even found a small mention of a "Father LaROSE" from Notre Dame church in Malone - which is where we have many church records! Families stayed together in areas, and probably migrated as small groups and sub-groups.

As I believe in FREE information and sharing, I'll post any lineage info I come up with on the main LaROSE board, for all to read.
Hi Carol,
Yes, it may have been Mohawk that my aunt thought we had as our Indian blood, and my notes actually say "daughter of an Indian Chief" - somewhere in "our" line (which includes LaRose).

I can also be reached directly at peacefrog_1369@yahoo.com

I love the timing of your message, as I just found these new LaROSE "roots" within the past day or two!

Lynne :)
Marguerite LaROSE m. Jean-Baptiste TREMBLAY

Hi, I'm looking for help with this couple. It may be Jean-Baptiste's second marriage. Their one confirmed daughter's birth is Elizabeth TREMBLAY, b. Nov 1858-1861 in Moose Creek, Stormont Co. Ontario. Elizabeth was married in Sept 1882 in Embrun, Russell Co. ONT (confirmed) to Francois ASSELIN.

J.Bpt (54 y.o.) might be in the 1871 Roxborough/Stormont co census; online is only the Head/Stray index. And I think it might be him (widowed) in the 1851-52 (37 y.o.)Charlottesburgh/Glengarry census co.

Also, the LaROSE name looks fairly "popular" in the history of Embrun. And a witness named at Elizabeth's marriage was "Hormisdas SIGOUIN", another name with a little history in that area.

Any help at all would be most appreciated to help me unwind these confounded branches! Lynne :)
I think you should read the "LARose Indian FRench blood" post: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.larose/187/mb.ashx -from this board.

I can't help but think there's a connection to this "famous" LaRose website/link and yours. Ojibwas are mentioned in the article, and if there was already positive blood between the LaRose family and these area natives...

Well, I just think it might be a lead. Good Luck!
Lynne :)

To add to the interest... my great-aunt mentioned an Indian CHIEF, somewhere in our line: (ASSELIN/TREMBLAY/LaROSE/BASTIEN). I remember thinking the "chief" part was wishful thinking!

She thought it was Blackfoot, which I thought later was too far west - but not if we're connected to this line. (I'm sure "Menominee" wasn't easy to remember!)

Jean-Baptiste TREMBLAY m. Marguerite LaROSE, they were from the eastern part of Ontario at some point (Russell/Stormont Cos./1860-ish; Elizabeth b. 1858-1861 Moose Creek/Roxborough/Stormont)

This was probably only helpful to me in my search, as this is the branch I'm stuck in right now, so thank you!

Lynne :)

Have you found any further information on Regina Larose. I recently found an entry that her father was Ludwig Laros born in 1723 in Alsase, France and died 3/17/1784 in Upper Milford, Lehigh, Pa. It also showed him married to Anna Kuniqunda Schadin born in1723 Lehigh, PA and died Apr 1788 in Upper Milford, Lehigh, PA. It also showed Regina having two sisters and three brothers. I am also related to the Phillips line

Thanks

I am looking into my family history and I have hit a stop here with Oliver Larose and Caroline Larose(Riendeau). They were my great grandmother's parents. I believe they were born in Canada and lived most of their lives there. Not sure if and when they moved to USA. Their children were:

Oliver Larose Jr. who went by Joe rather then Oliver
Albert Larose
William Larose
George Larose
Regina Godin(Larose)
Dora Dufalt(Larose) married Arthur Dufalt
Geneva Godin(Larose)
and my great grandmother
Justina Laflam(Larose) who was married to George Laflam

If anyone has any information like birth records, death records, or any other information on any of these names I would love to know more about it.
Lynne---I forgot to mention something to you. I have several Catholic church marriage CDs for Quebec and one for Glengarry, Ontario. I purchased the CDs from www.quintinpulications.com They are excellent and have helped me sort out several lines in Canada. But I don't have Stormont or Dundas, Ontario so I can't look those up for you. I'll check Glengarry just for the heck of it and get back to you.---Carol

Re: LARose Indian FRench blood

Excellent, fun and informative reply, Lynne. Thanks. I've been camping out for several weeks at the fulton and No. NY newspaper sites. And I've been fortunate to rule in or rule out some data on a few of my lines. But this Nancy Jane LAROSE and Earl Frank VEIO search has me biting my toe nails. I've found only three items and there should be more---even if they are blurbs. And I can't get anybody to come forward with information on the Earl F. Veio's parents. They're hiding something---something they are either afraid to tell me or ashamed to tell me. And if anybody is reading this message---DNA is DNA. Blood is blood and no amount of Government paperwork can ever change that. And I am very broad-minded and kind and fair. *sigh* I just want to know where and if Earl F. Veio fits in with my line/s.

Re: LAROSE & VEIO. My next step is to call the St. Regis Mohawk Indian Reservtion in St. Lawrence County, NY. I have a hunch that Earl's mother was Indian and I need to validate this. I don't know what the protocol is for obtaining Indian records, but they are probably guarded. And I respect that. Earl Veio was born FEB 12, 1898, NY and I can only locate him in the 1920 census with wife, Nancy. In 1930 Nancy is living back with her parents, Antoine LAROSE and Emma nee TRIMM.

I contacted the Hopkinton, NY town clerk to request a lookup for the death record of Earl F. Veio. He passed away in Nicholville, NY in 1933. I need to remind them about the record search.

Here's another concern I have. Birth and death records are $22.00 each whether the records are found or not. And from experience, I've found that not all death records give the name of the parents. So I don't want to spend $22 for information I aready have. And then there's the many colorful misspellings of the VIAU/VEIO surname which drives me bonkers. And the indexing in census records is way nuts. In the 1920, Earl and Nancy are indexed as VINER. But I better add that I appreciate all the volunteers who helped put these records online for our use.

Thanks for writing. I appreciate the feedback. My email address is open to anyone who wants to share information.

Carol
cveio@sbcglobal.net

Hi Lynne,

I'm searching the line of Samuel Larose and Alice unkn who were born in Canada Fr. c. 1849 & 1860, respectively. In the 1900 census Brandon Twp, Franklin, NY, they are listed as being married 27 years, with Alice having two births, two living. This doesn't make sense to me but I'll accept it for now. The sons listed with her are Antoine, b. c. 1877, NY and Frank, b. c. 1879, NY.

Antoine Larose married Emma Trimm and had eight children that I know of, all born NY, poss. St. Lawrence county. One of their children, Nancy Jane Larose married Earl Veio in 1917, NY. Earl and Nancy had four girls who survived to maturity, marrying and having children. It is my understanding the four girls had six fingers on each hand. I believe they were from the wonderful Melungeon culture. Does any of this ring a bell with you? It is my understanding that the Larose line was Mohawk Indian, but I could be wrong.

I look forward to any feedback you may have to offer.

Carol
