Thanks so much for this! Its amazing how these tragedies end up shaping everyone's life going forward- like your mom not being permitted to have a bicycle. I'll never look at my dining room the same way again, either!

My husband knows of someone who is friends with the family that live in the house across the street. We will try to meet them, tell them about you, and see if they would be willing to let you stop in there sometime. I will keep you posted.

My email address is: jfairbairn@charter.net

Shawano County Advocate
Shawano, Wis., Tuesday September 20, 1921
"Fatal Accident Saturday Last
Alice Larson Run Over By Auto on Main Street. Passed Away.
The crowded conditions of autos on Main street was the cause of one sweet little life being taken Saturday afternoon. There were a large number of autos on the street and after the football game many autos were returning home. At about four-thirty, Alice Larson, oldest daughter of Mayor and Mrs. A. S. Larson, was crossing the street in front of Gallagher's drug store. There was just room for two autos to pass on the street and as Alice was endeavoring to cross the street it is thought that she was hit by an auto and she fell face down, her head striking the pavement. H. M. Sanderson and family were driving north very slowly and Alice fell right in front of Mr. Sanderson's auto one wheel of the auto passing over her back. Mr. Sanderson stopped the auto at once. Alfred Reid who was in front of the drug store and saw the accident, picked Alice up and she told who she was, saying she was Alice Larson. She aws taken to Dr. Stubenvoll's office and Mr. Larson found as soon as possible. Everything possible was done for her and she was taken to her hom on Division street. Mrs. Larson had been in a Green Bay hostpical for two or three days having her tonsils removed. Mr. Christopherson and family were going to that city and they were asked to bring Mrs. Larson home, which they did, arriving at about seven o'clock. When Mrs. Larson saw her home all lighted up she knew that something was the matter and asked, and was told that Alice had been hurt quite seriously. Mrs. Larson saw that nothing could be done and Alice told her not to worry, that she would be all right. She passed away about fifteen minutes after Mrs. Larson returned home.
There has not been an accident in Shawano for many years which caused so much sadness as the death of Alice Larson. It was purely an accident and one that could not have been avoided. The deepest sympathy has been extended to Mayor and Mrs. Larson and friends and neighbors have done all that they could to help them in their great loss.
Mr. Sanderson is one of the most careful drivers in the city and is always on the watchout for people crossing the street. Both Mr. and Mrs. Sanderson feel the shock of the accident very deeply and their friends sympathize with them
Alice Henrietta was the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Larson and was born in Shawano Oct. 16, 1910 and has always made her home here. She was a bright and sweet little girl and had a great many friends. She attended the public school and was in the sixth grade, being a favorite with her class mates. She has been a member of the Presbyterian Sunday school since she was old enough to attend, and took much interest in the Sunday school work, being there every Sunday. Alice was greatly loved by her parents and her sister Elsie and two small brothers who are heartbroken over the sudden death. A death of this kind in a home is always sad and the great loss can never be forgotten.
The funeral was held this afternoon at her late home, Rev. Bell, pastor of the Methodist church officiating. The funeral was one of the largest that has been held in Shawano for many months, the house not being half large enough to hold the friends who attended. The floral offerings were many and very beautiful, showing the high esteem in which alice was held. The flower girls were six class mates and the pall bearers six young ladies. Interment in Woodlawn cemetery. A number of relatives were here to attend the funeral."

Note: My grandfather John was only 5 when this happened but he remembered Alice being brought home and laid on the dining room table. He always said that Alice was riding her bicycle when she was hit but the article doesn't mention a bicycle. My mother was the oldest of his 4 girls and she wasn't allowed to have a bicycle when she was growing up because of the accident.

Please do stop by the house, especially at Christmas. It would be great to get a picture of you in front of the fireplace to add to my collection of the family history. My thought is that the death of Alice must have been pretty traumatic. If you have Alice's obituary that you could pass along, I'd be appreciative. I have had a ghost since I've lived here- a child that runs down the hall. I'm thinking it must have been Alice, and a lot of things now make sense to me.

Please do stop in- I'd love to show you the house. Perhaps I could even arrange to have you see the one across the street, too. I'd ask them on your behalf. :-)

Jacki Fairbairn
That is so interesting to hear since the only place that my mother knew about where her father grew up was the house in all of the other pictures. I just assumed that the house with the children was also that house. The next time I am in Wisconsin I will have to come see your house too... I'm not sure when that will be. It might be this Christmas but I got a new job. My boyfriend's family lives in Green Bay and I sometimes go back there for Christmas. When I do I try to stop by Shawano.
Lisa.
gumml@aracnet.com

I took off work for a half an hour and went to the Shawano County courthouse to look at the land records. "Rita" in the Land office who knew the books well and did the search quickly. I'll be back to get the detailed 'volume numbers' etc, to fill in for certification sake when Rita has more time. But I quickly jotted down dates, and Albert S and Celia A Larson owned my home from April 14 1916 until around October 13, 1922, having purchased it from George J Schultz and wife Mary T, sale registered May 2, 1916. So, they probably didn't build my house, but they did live there. Alice would have been about 4 years old at the time, which seems to fit the picture. I KNEW IT! The fireplace behind the children is from my house at 413 S Franklin. :-)

I am stunned! These pictures are amazing! I know that you really are probably thinking I am a whack job for pursuing this, BUT, check out the attached picture of MY fireplace that I took in 2006. (I uncovered it from many layers of paint and have done a lot more restoration since...)

Fireplace carvings are unique. Ignore that the surround is no longer brick with an insert- the columns are exactly the same. It took me 6 months to restore it, so I have a lot of close up knowledge! I am convinced that my fireplace and the fireplace in the third picture where all the children are sitting was taking in my house. Unreal!!

I have another story that might relate to Alice- but will also look up the 438 and Division street leads and see if I can figure out the logic. As you guessed from the pic on the porch, the street numbers changed a lot over a single 30 year period.

Let me know your thoughts on the fireplace- and if you have any other shots, I would be so grateful! There were not many owners of my house, and I've had 2 of the 4 families who lived here stop and visit, let me take pics of them, and sent me some from their time here. Attached is a picture of Dr. Jack Anderson and his daughters, who were here last week. Jack's dad was A.O.Anderson, who bought the home from Albert Larson- at least that's what Jack remembered his dad saying. Jack is now 83.
I'm planning on framing everything I've gathered and installing the photos in the upstairs hallway. The pictures you sent are amazing. If I can verify conclusively that the facts match and/or you agree with my fireplace 'evidence', I'd love to include these pics in my planned historical display. Again- thank you!

Attached are some pictures that I found. Most are from the outside but there is one from the inside of a house.

The first picture is the wedding photo of Albert and Celia Larson. I thought that you might like to know what they looked like.
The second one is 3 of their children: John, Elsie, and James.
The third picture is from the inside of the house and is all 4 children: James, Elsie, Alice, and John. Alice was hit by a car in 1921 on Main Street in Shawano and died.
The fourth picture is the family in front of the house in 1942. John, his wife Mary, Celia, Elsie, Elsie's daughter Anne, and James.
The fifth, sixth, and seventh pictures are also outside the house. One is Celia, the other 2 are John.

Most of the pictures appear to be outside the house that I included earlier. What is interesting is that the number of the house appears to be 438 and not 416. 438 Franklin is also the address on Celia's obit as well.

BTW, in Alice's obit from 1921 it states that she was taken to her home on Division Street. I'm not sure that the Larsons lived on Franklin Street in 1920.
Lisa.

Attached is a fax I received of when I purchased my house-- the plat description contains the handwritten names of the prior owners. Note that to the left it says "Anderson from Larson, 1920." This is why I was so convinced that the house was built by your family. Again, I met the son of A.O. Anderson- who also told me his dad purchased our house from a "Larson" who was an attorney and died unexpectedly. Maybe Larson built both my house and the one that you sent me a picture of? That would make sense per the obituary's mention of Albert Larson's home that he had built. I can't imagine the obit would have been mentioned a home at all if it hadn't been a recent event. Also attached is a picture of the front of my house from 2006- I figured the Halloween theme might be appropriate given the date! If you do have pics of the inside of the Larson home, I'd love to see them. Who knows- maybe they are actually from inside my house? I'd know for sure just looking!
Thanks much!!
Jacki

Wow-- It isn't my house but I can see it right outside my window! Its just across and down the street from me. I had really thought that Albert had built my house. Although I'm back to square one searching, I did stop by the Shawano historical society. It wasn't open but there was a guy there taking out trash so I looked up Albert's obituary. I'm at 413 S Franklin, but the house numbers had changed in the 30-40's, and I believe Albert's must have been 403. Albert's house now has houses on either side of it that aren't much to talk about.
Attached is what I found in the Larson family file. It is scanned exactly as it is in the archive- there are some missing lines. But I think the text is a really wonderful tribute. I also found some other documents and have attached those as well.
Jacki

I believe that the Albert Larson family lived at 416 Franklin Street Shawano, Wisconsin. I have attached a picture of the house probably from the 1930's or 1940's. I also have some pictures of the inside as well.

Albert died in 1931 from an appendectomy that became infected. His wife lived in the house until she died in December 1942.

I would be interested to know if you live in their old house. I was by there in 2003, but didn't knock on the door. I keep intending to go back eventually.
Lisa.

I'm curious about Albert Samuel Larson. Do you know where in Shawano he lived before he passed away? I'm trying to nail down the builder of my home. A son from the second family who owned my house visted me this weekend- he's was born and grew up in it and is now 84 years old. He only remembered that it was a "Larson" who was an attorney. Any help appreciated!!!
Rebecca, words can not express my feelings of gratitude to you for your search for me in behalf of Dane. Today the telephone rang, in the office. My Wife answered the phone, Angel Haven, may I help you? Dane said yes, is Denvy there? She tries to shield all advertising calls, so she asked who may I say is calling? I think Dane had to repeat his name a couple of times until it sunk in-this is an important call for both of us...Thank you again. We may be able to vis it the last week or two in June, so, maybe we can also meet. Denvy
