Pamela: hello again. My e mail address is: dmclark0407@yahoo.com. Any help would be appreciated. I have no way to identify most of the pics since my aunt has passed on and I don't have contact with the daughter. Thankfully some are marked. Donna

Yes, John married Clara. Like I said, it all gets so confusing. I was always told that an "aunt"--specifically Sarah--adopted my grandfather. Then someone else said they had info pointing to John and Clara adopting. The more I thought about this it started making sense. If Clara DID adopt Andrew it would still mean Sarah--as John's mother--would be an "aunt." As I also said there has never been found a record of a legal adoption. Sara could have helped raise Andrew. Anyway, I plan on still trying to find info. On my mom's side I have actually been able to trace family back before the 1600s,before they came to this country. That is what makes it all worth while! Have a great day. Donna

Pamela: Thanks for all the above info and for taking the time to type it out and send it. That information on Clara's little essay was facinating. This is why I love this kind of research. Can you even imagine what it was like back then? Today we have instant access via computer, phone, txt. Here is this young woman-not much more than a child-being courted by an older man. He grew up in a some what civilized enviornment but, when he was a young man he lived pretty much in the wilderness. According to Clara he was courtly and a gentleman but still....I do have old family pics but many are not marked with their name. As for the marriage license it may already be in the archives. I am not sure I have one. Also, I have just recently moved and I can't find hardly anything! Recently a cousin by law sent me a copy of a marriage license for Andrew's dad and mom. The Lassitor/Mulkins clan were quite famous and well known in that area. I am sure you know from your research that they ran a stage station in Vallecito. I do know there are court records of the property line dispute. An aunt of mine, now deceased, did extensive family research. She always promised me a copy of everything she had but never did. Her daughter now has the info and I have lost contact with her. I am basically retracking all or most of the info my aunt would have had. Except I have the advantage of the computer. Again, thanks for all the info. Donna

Pamela: Good morning. This first post contains the same information I have been made aware of. However, Sarah and John also had a son named Scott. He is buried in Davenport,Iowa. The Mulkins traveled from New York down thru Iowa and Texas. At some point they also traveled thru Utah where John Sr. and his mother-in-law died. After Sarah married Lassiter they had children. The John Mulkins in the J R Lassitor company was the son. Donna

Part 3

To back-up and clarify. The on-line genealogy I found listed several children born to Sarah Waterhouse and John Mulkins - I only listed a few to illustrate that they were "on the move" with children being born in several states.

Now to the essay I have. It tells of the widow (Loiusa Jane Gazaway Danks) barely able to cloth and feed her three young children in Texas. She decides to sell her belongings and land and to to California with her brother John and sister Clara. "When they reached the Gila the provisions were getting low, so low that food would undoubtedly be exhausted before reaching civilization. John and Bill Smith left the slowmoving ox teams and came on foot to get supplies...." This was 1868/69
The now small wagon train continued - (apparently they were headed to El Monte where they had cousins who had come out two years earlier 1866/7) "They met a man who advised them to go into San Diego, then up the coast to El Monte."

"...One day after a weary climb over the mountains they came in sight of a beautiful little valley. Fat cattle, goats and horses were grazing on the rich pasture. The place was called Green Meadows [sic?]. They drove to the log cabin. THe boss was away, but the foreman made the travelers comfortable, killing a goat and telling them to help themselves to anything they wished. Man and beast were feeasted and rested. The boss returned in three days. He proved to be a handsome man about 30, of Yankee birth, but had been with Mexicans so much he had acquired their graceful ways and pretty method of speech. He soon became a favorite with the girls of the train. Clara was doing the work for the foreman's wife, who was ill. The day the boss arrived home she set out a lunch for him......The sight of this straight, little Texas girl in the kitchen appealed quite strongly to [t]his bachelor Yankee cowboy rancher so strongly in fact that he asked her to become his wife..."

The ages given work with the genealogies I found on line -- unless whoever put together the genealogies was using this essay as the source.

I'm interested in your thoughts. Do you have any photos of Clara Gazaway Mulkins? And have you found record of their marriage license that "Wesley" rode to San Diego to procure? With your permission, I'd like to attach copies to the report I give to the San Diego Historical Society - I will certainly credit you as the source.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Pam

Part 2

"These were happy years for Sarah Lassator, with whom tragedy had walked the long trail before and would walk again after this peaceful interlude in Green alley. She had lost her first husband and her mother on the overland trip to California in 1852. She married Lassator in Los Angeles Feb 19, 1854 and went with her two sons and three daughters to live in the sod house at Vallecito.....first marriage [at GreenValley] took place on March 19, 1862, after Capt. James Dye had won the hand of Jane Mulkins. Step-father Lassator, as Justice of the Peace [married the couple.]

"Some time late in 1863, Lassator left for Arizona Territory on a lengthy commercial and mining trip apparently. Returning in Janary of 1865, with $3,000 in gold-dust, he and a companion were murdered at Texas Hill, AZ; the bodies, the wagon and an abandoned trunk were found by his stepson, John Mulkins. Thus began a new period in the history of Green Valley, for on the settlement of the estate in 1867, the name of John Wesley Mulkins first appears on the tax-rolls and assessment papers..."

Later in the article it identifies James Ruler Lassator as being born in North Carolina in 1816. (Klled at Texas Hill about 90 miles above Fort Yuma on the Gila River) James Ruler Lassator Jr. was born at Vallecity in 1854 and killed ia cattle war near Tomstone, AZ in 1885. There are photos included of both men.

I'll post now and then continue with Part 3

Hi Donna,

I am only related to the Gazaways by marriage. Fanny Danks, daughter of Louisa Jane Gazaway Danks Wright married by great-grandfather's brother. The essay is written by a daughter of Louisa Jane Gazaway Danks and her second husband, George Wright.

The only research I have done on the Gazaway/Mulkins lines has been on line so I realize that the sources may not be accurate. But for the sake of discussion, I think we should compare some dates.

The information I found has Sarah Whitehouse born 1817 in NY. She married John Mulkins in 1833 - again in NY. Their reported children include Andrew Mulkins b 1833 NY, John Wesley Mulkins b 1837 in MI and Loduska b. 1847 in IA. It goes on the say that Sarah Whitehouse then married Lassiter about 1853.

From the Journal of San Diego History 3:2: 18-24, "Lassator and his stepsons, Andrew and John Mulkins (probably the J.R. Lassator & Co.) learned of this trail soon after settling at Vallecity in 1854, from Indians who annually traversed Oriflamme Canyon to harvest acorns from Cuyamaca's oak forests. .....Over this well-worn trail Lassator and young John Mulkins went to Green vally in 1857, to take up "160 acres of government land." The article continues to discuss the valley, trail and origin of the old house. "As soon as John Mulkins and his step-father had the stone house ready, Sarah Mulkins Lassator left the earquake-ridden sod house and desert heat at Vallecito for pleasant Green Valley. There she found...."a different climate" for herself and her two babies, James Lassator Jr. and little Martha, born some time that spring. With her also were tow older daughters - John's sisters - Jane, 17 and Lodusky, 10. An older sister, Loana Mulkins Beard, joined the household later.........

I'm going to post this and then continue - so I don't loose it!

This will be the third time I have tried to type this because it keeps getting wiped out. Let me try again. My paternal grandfather was Andrew Gazaway. When he was two both his parents and a younger sibling died from complications of the flu. I have always been told that he was adopted by John Senior and his wife ("an aunt") Sarah Waterhouse Mulkins but I could never find the connection between Sarah and Andrew. A distant cousin recently told me that she had hear that Andrew was adopted by a younger sister of his dad,John. I think it might have been Clara. I am not sure how the Gazaways and Mulkins originally got together but I do know that the Gazaways made a number of trips out to Green Valley and Vallecito. My grt grt grandfather raised horses. I also think the family was involved in some kind of trading and/or transporting people out to California. They did make a lot of trips out that way. Eventually John and Clara went out there. That was when the Gazaways and the Mulkins intermingled in marriage. I have been trying to fit it all together so I know I have wrote information on here that I later found out isn't correct. I hope I have clarified what I wrote earlier. When you get time you can write me what you have. I enjoy reading old diaries/letters. They wrote about some mundane stuff but,to us today,it is exciting to hear what kind of life they led and connect to them that way. I have a couple of letters (original) that are a hundred plus years old. I really should frame them so they don't deteriate. I also have a lot of old photos. Well I gotta run. Thanks for replying so quickly. Donna PS I am trying to make sense of who was related to who in your post-the Gazaways,Danks,Hanes-.If you are related to Louisa Jane Gazaway then we are related as I am a Gazaway.
Hi Donna,

I only have a few minutes to reply, but first wanted to let you know that I am not related. Clara Gazaway's niece, Fanny Danks (daughter of Clara's sister, the widos Louisa "Jane" Gazaway Danks) Fanny married my great-grandfather's brother, John "Phillip" Hanes. My great-grandfather William "Fred" Hanes and his brother Phillip had the first store in Azusa, CA and lived and worked side by side. This essay was among my grandmother's things - but it is only a typed copy.

I am only trying to figure out who is who in this little story - and let the relatives of the people mentioned know about it. I hope to give an annotated paper to the San Diego Historical Society when I'm finished. I would love to include any photos we can find. (I have one of Fanny as an adult.)

I'm confused - who was adopted by "his Aunt-Sara Waterhouse/Mulkins?" You mentioned in one letter that the Gazaways and the Mulkins didn't intermarry - Sarah adopted a Gazaway. But my essay suggests differently.
It tells of Clara Gazaway meeting Wesley (Mulkins) by chance - their wagon train deciding to break off and go a different way and ending up at this rancho owned by (Mulkins)

I have to run.
More later.
So good to hear from you!
Pam

Pamela: Thanks for answering my post. Are you related? I would be glad for any info you have but I do have a question or two for you. Did you know there were three John Wesley's? John Wesley Mulkins senior and Junior. (I honestly don't know what names they went by to distinguish them from each other.)Then there was John Wesley,my dad. He was never designated as "third." It was John Mulkins (the son of John senior)who bought the wedding stuff. Does it mention the names of the children? My other question is this: if the letter was talking about Vallecito,or Green Valley, it wasn't owned by an "New England" man. I don't think. Vallecito was built on land my family got from the Spanish. A Spanish land grant that they lost in a boundry line dispute. Back in the day I am sure they measured land-for the most part-by "that creek" "that tree" ect. Anyway, someone else said the land belonged to him and my family lost it. You can find the information in court records in San Diego. I am familiar enough with my family history to know most of the story you related. Mulkins senior and his wife-Sarah Waterhouse Mulkins-adopted my grandfather when he was two years old. My family lived in Texas for about four generations after moving here from back east. They were Gazaway (or,originally)Gassaway. I don't know how much of this history you are familiar with but I would love to hear from you. I also have been in contact with others that I am related to. It is like putting a puzzle together. My family hip hopped all over the US,moving here and there. I lived in Iowa for about 20 years before moving here to Texas. AFTER moving here I found out my family had an Iowa connection and that I had family buried there. Now doesn't THAT figure! LOL Anyway, contact me when you can. We will see if we can help each other. And,by the way, if you aren't familiar with the history of Vallecito you can look it up on the internet\. It is very famous. Again, thanks. Donna

I have some information I think you will find helpful. I have a short essay that was written by the daughter of Louisa Jane Gazaway Danks Wright. It tells of Louisa "Jane" Gazaway Danks, a widower and her three very young children who set out by wagon train from Texas to California with her brother John Gazaway and sister Clara Gazaway.

The exhausted party was invited to rest at a beautiful rancho east of San Diego. Four weeks after meeting the New England bachelor who owned the ranch, 15-year old Clara was his bride. "In a few days Wesley was off to San Diego to procure the license and his lady’s trousseau." I believe this was John Wesley Mulkins.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Donna,
I went back and checked some notes, and believe we lost contact because shortly after the last one we made, my spouse passed away suddenly. I was udderly distraught and not myself or quite awhile. I was relatively young,
and he too was hardly middle aged. We simply did not expect it and it set me back. I really haven't done all I want on my genealogy, mostly due to time restraints (now). I have a ranch, and a large herd of horses, which are hard to sell presently, thus I can't downsize. I'm overwhelmed with it all and some days wonder how I cope. I do love the country life and envision continuing, just not on such a large scale. Hopefully at that time, I can get back to my hobbies. I keep thinking I need to contact a distant cousin, whose sister died and she vowed to continue her work. I moved and various things happening prevented me from finding her # again. perhaps soon I can try to find her again and see if she has had time to work on it. What have you been able to research and find?
anything ? Debbie........oh, and I'll try to send you my email but it is the same as the past one. Hope it is not deleted here, it is woolfpac @ prodigy dot net, no spaces.

I am looking for the parents of my grandfather, Hubert Poe Lasseter, b. 3/11/1897, Attapulgus, GA, d. 3/21/1974, Havana, Florida. He had a sister named Vega(?) and they were orphaned at a young age. I have a Wren Stucky Lasseter listed as one of his parents. Do you have any information on these Lasseters? I saw your posts re Harbarte Lasseter and was wondering if this could be a relative, possibly father of Hubert Poe Lasseter, who was a banker during the depression and lived in Buffalo, NY, where my mother was born. I have also heard that he was an inventor.

I saw your posting on Wm.M.T. Lasseter on RootsWeb. I am related to Wm.M.T. Lasseter and I am also looking for information on him. August (actually its Augustus) Monroe Lasseter is my gg grandfather. Augustus Monroe was born in Georgia on 19 Jul 1872, d. 24 Aug 1938 and is buried in the Quick Cemetery, Methodist Church Cemetery in Vienna, Dooly County, Ga. He married Eula Lee Quick on 19 Sep 1897 in Ga., she was b. 24 Sep 1875 in GA. d. 17 Mar 1930 in Vienna, Dooly County, GA, burial: Quick Cemetery, Methodist Church Cemetery, Vienna, Dooly County, GA. Augustus and Eula children are: William Morgan, b. 1 Jan 1901 in Vienna, Dooly, GA. (haven't been able to find when he died). I understand from one of his living sons that he lived in Ocala, Marion County, Fl. when he died and was buried in N.C. or S.C.), Charlie Monroe (you have listed as Charley)(this is my grandfather) b. 28 Jan 1906 Vienna, Dooly, GA., d. 15 Jul 1982 Griffin, Spalding County, GA, buiral: Oak Hill Cemetery, Griffin, Spalding County, GA. He Married Emma Odell Crumbley on 5 Feb 1925 in GA. They had four children: three are still living and one Ruth Odell (my mother) b. 22 Jun1928 in Barnsville, Lamar County, GA., d. 31 Dec 2005 in White Lake, Mi, burial: Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorlf, Charles County, MD. She married James E. Smith (my father) on 2 Aug 1946 in GA., James Franklin b. 9 Dec 1909, Vienna, Dooly, GA, d. 19 May 1983 in Barnsville, Lamar, GA., Married Janie Mae Driskell., Annie Irene b. 30 Aug 1898 in Vienna, Dooly, GA. She married a Duckworth. (that is all I have on her). They also had a baby female b. on 7 Feb 1913 that died at birth.
I was told by a second cousin (he is the son of James Franklin and grandson of Augustus) that the children of W.M.T. Lasseter are who you listed but he had no more information on him or them. If you have more information on this family you can e-mail me at: OleMari1@AOL.Com.
Thank you for your time.
Mary

I also changed my e-mail so, if you did try to get ahold of me that may explain how we lost contact. Hope to hear from you soon. Donna Mulkins

Re: William Monroe Lasseter born in Augusta Georgia

We are seeking information on the family of James M.(Jim and/or Jesse) Lasseter/Laster/Lassiter who was born either in AL or GA on 4 Feb. 1870 and died 26 March 1947 in Pulaski or Dooly Co., GA. He married Mary E. (Mollie) Whitfield in 1892. His children include William Grady, Marietta, Rennie Model, Johnnie B., Samuel W., and Maudie Lee Lasseter. We think his father is W.M.T. Lasseter and his mother, Susannah (Susan) C. The children of W.M.T. and Susannah include Lee L., Augustus Monroe, Charlie (Bud), Frank, another daughter, and Christopher (Babe). We will be happy to share information. I found information on the family of Wm. Monroe and Amanda A. Howell Lassiter on www.familysearch.org. Are they related to my line?

My husband's grandparents were Clyde Ernest Powell and Maude Lee Lasseter (Laster on wedding license) b. 19 May 1900--d. 5 Sept. 1977 in Barnesville, GA. Her father was James Melvin Lasseter (4 Feb. 1870?--26 March 1947 in Pike or Lamar Co., GA), and her mother was Mary (Mollie) Whitfield. This couple lived in Dooly, Pulaski, Pike, and Lamar counties in GA. Maude's siblings included: Wm. Grady who died at age 2; Marietta (1896 m. Frank Andrews); Edmond/Emanuel (Shorty--1898); Rennie Model (1905--was crippled); Johnnie B. (1907 mar. Melton); Samuel Woodrow (1913-1991); Lucy (1915 mar Perry).

I think James Melvin's father was W.M.T. Lasseter whose sons were Lee L., August Monroe (1872-1938), Christopher (Babe), Charles (Bud), Frank, and 1 daughter. W.M.T.'s wife was Susannah/Susan C.

We need more information on the family of W.M.T. and his parents. We will be very happy to share information.

I suspect that John may be the son of James Lasseter and Maria Felton. They show a 1 year old John living with them in the 1860 Sumpter Co., GA census.

I'd found him since that post, John Emery son of Emery Lasseter & Rebecca unknown. Of Decatur Co, GA, likely Attapulgus. And yes he was a Confederate soldier. John married Mary Elizabeth Griffin of Attapulgus.

Just taking a look at the 1900 census, this could be them:

Name Parent or spouse names Home in 1900
(City,County,State) Birth Date Birthplace Race Relation Hubert Lassitor John E,
Mary E Bainbridge, Decatur, Georgia Apr 1897 Georgia

Other children are John and Carl. John is 28, Mary 25.

Lottie 20 and Fannie 8 Stuckey from AL are in their home. Maybe Mary's sisters or nieces, since she was born AL also.

I've little doubt you can track more of this family using census to get started. I used a wild card las*ter
