WOW! What great information. I had given up searching because I just kept hitting dead ends and I got so frustrated. I can't believe all of the information you shared with me. I really appreciate it! Now I can fill in a lot of blanks and I have so much new info to follow up on the website.

Naturalization: October 14, 1913

Only, his Dutch (official) last name is not Last, but Bulthuis, first name Hendrik.
It took me a long time to figure it out, but I will try to explain.

He is the son of Gerhard Bulthuis and Renske Bödeker, born in the city of Groningen on May 20, 1884.

His parents were divorced on 01 Mar 1889.

Mom Renske remarried in Groningen on 27 Feb 1890 to:
Jakob Last, widower of Grietje van der Meulen

Hendrik traveled to the USA on board the SS Noordam, dep. Rotterdam 14 Aug 1902, arr. NY 24 Aug 1902. He was accompanied by his stepfather Jacob Last, using the last name of Last as well. Their final destination was H. Bulthuis, Leavenworth, brother in law of Jacob and uncle of Hendrik.

Hendrik’s brother, Martinus Bulthuis, left for the USA as well. Traveling on the SS Kroonland, dep. Antwerp 13 Dec 1902, arr. NY 23 Dec 1902 (final destination step father Last, Leavenworth, Kansas)

Step dad Jakob Last did return to The Netherlands to his wife, since he died there in 1935. I think he just wanted to see his step sons settle in.

As to the H. Bulthuis listed as final destination:

This was Hendrik Jan Bulthuis, brother of Hendrik’s father Gerhard, married to Frederika Bödeker, sister of Hendrik’s mother Renske. Therefore brother in law of Jakob Last and uncle of Hendrik Bulthuis / Last.

I can not find him in any US census, but I find wife Frederika in various censuses. In the 1900 census her brother John Badiker (aged 33) is living with her. This is Jan Pieter Bödeker, born 19 Apr 1866. They are listed as being born in Germany, but this is wrong.

My great grandfather was William Last. His son, Conrad Bertie Last was my grandfather. I believe there were 4 sons ie Conrad, William, Percy, Frank and a daughter Ethel. All 4 sons migrated to West Australia and went farming. I think William Last was born in either Edmunsbury or Alesbury England. He was either a coach b uilder or a coach painter. Does this fit with your william Last?

James married Elizabeth Walker December 1881 in Ipswich Suffolk England, Elizabeth died in 1886 aged 28 years. They had two boys Arthur James Alma and Henry Thomas. Does anyone know of Elizabeth in their family, her father was William Walker and he had died before she married.I have no details of where she came from.

Hi Simon,

Henry was my 5th Great Grandfather. I am descended via Lydia Last - Betsey Chenery - Eliza Ann Sheldrake - Florence May Bannister - then my Gran who is still with us.

I have had a look at your tree. There is a differences between the information you have on Henry and the info I have - but then again I could have missed some information as I have only had chance to go through the parish records once. I am at work at the moment, so will need to check what I have.

I do have a tree online which at the moment has very few dates - it's about time I updated it!! It should be on my profile as Archer Quarter (I think it is a public tree - let me know if you have any problems).

I would love to have more information on the Last's. I was down at one of the Suffolk Record Office's last month, but was unable to find Henry's christening (although I only have time to check the records for Stowupland).

How far have you got back with the Last's? I presume you know who Henry's parents were as you have him down as a cousin!!

Jabez Robert LAST 1865-1919

I am trying to solve a query re my Gt Uncle Jabez.

His death cert shows he passed away at the Miller Hospital , London 23 Feb 1919. Witness to the death was a Frances Reed , Niece, of Woodland Street, E.Greenwich.
I cannot find any reference to Frances in the family history and need some help to solve this query.

Can anyone suggest a next move? or does any of this ring a bell with someone.

I am the grandson of Alice Humphreys who was the daughter of Trevor Humphreys and Selina Hopkins.

I would be interested in sharing information about our families and would love to know more about how we are connected – Who Did Humphrey Humphreys marry etc.

Timothy Matten TODD was my 3rd Great Uncle and my Great Grandfather Joseph LAST’S mother was Mary TODD descended from William TODD and Anne MATTEN.

My parents still live in Suffolk not far from Parham where the TODD family originated from and I have visited the church and graveyard there.

I've just started researching my family tree, and appear to have come across a mystery!

My nan (Elizabeth Ann Wheatley nee Last) always seemed to think there may have been a German connection with her Dad or paternal Grandfather, as she tells me that no one ever seemed to know much about him.

I have managed to trace her father, William Robert Last (b. 1905, Cranbrook), but that is it. I cannot seem to find anything more! Not a mother's surname, or anything.

William Robert Last had one brother, Leslie, and a sister, Ethel.

If anyone can possibly help, or has any ideas, I'd be glad to know!

Hi Carol, I have just found your message, has it really been there since last August, if so sorry.
Yes, we do have a connection. Sarah Ann Last nee Fletcher was the daughter of my Great Great Grandparents, Isaac and Mary Fletcher. I could find no details of her for years then I think it was through a new Census issue that I found her.
My mother had a postcard collection which her mother had made in the early 1900's and there is a postcard from Edie in Dorking to Alice, my grandmother's sister. I also have a letter written by my grandmother's cousin to my mother dated 1936 in which she says she is going to visit Aunt Sarah and cousin Rose. From that I was able to find that Sarah died in 1838.
Sarah's brother Charles married George's sister Mary Ann.
I also went to school with a Patricia Last and I have often wondered if she came from the same family.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Willard 'Bill' Francis Last, 78, formerly of Muscatine, died Friday, August 13, 2004, at the Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation, West Branch, after an extended illness.

Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2004, at St. Mathias Church. Reverend John P. Gallagher will officiate. Casket bearers will be Sam and Aaron Last, Mike Reeves, Dennis Janssen, Jack Lamm and Fred Wookey. Honorary Bearers will be Paul Bermel, Paul Schumacher and Sean Last. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus or to Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Visitation will be at the funeral home. A Rosary will be prayed by the Knights of Columbus.

He was born on November 29, 1925, in Black Creek, Wisconsin, the son of Willard F. and Frances Van Straten Last. He married Helen Elizabeth Jochman on June 16, 1948 in Appleton, Wisconsin.

He was a graduate of University of Wisconsin with a Masters in Microbiology.

He was a member of the St. Mathias Church, the Knights of Columbus, was a past Grand Knight, and a member of the 4th degree. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW and the Moose Lodge #388.

Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the great outdoors.

He served in WWII in the Army. He was a Regional Governor in Korea after WWII and prior to the Korean War.

He worked as a superintendent of Quality Control at Grain Processing Corporation, retiring after 37 years of service. He was instrumental in starting Quality Control and the fermentation plant.

Survivors include a two sons, Michael Last and wife Kathy, of West Liberty, and Mark Last, of Muscatine; seven grandchildren, Shasta, Eric, Sam, Sean, Aaron and Hunter Last, and Stephanie Reeves; two sisters, Ruby Minlschmidt, of Black Creek, Wisconsin, and Ethel and husband Clarence Diermeier, of Black Creek, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews also survive.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Helen in 1994, and a son, Matthew J. Last in 1991.

My G,G Auntie Sarah Ann Last (1848) was married to my G,G Uncle George Last(1847), who had a daughter called Edith Sarah Last (1888), Millicent Last(1878), Amy Last(1882), Millicent Last and Rosa Last .They had sons' called Charles George Last(1874), Isaac Last(1880) and Percy Last(1884). I'm a little further with my Lasts from Bruisyard, but they don't seem to match anything on this board as yet. My great grandfather was Jonathan Last (b c1929). His father was Josiah although I note on Jonathan's marriage cert he was named as Joseph. His mother was Mary who died in 1837 aged 49. I think Josiah also died when Jonathan was young. Jonathan married Frances Reeve in 1853 and they had 7 children - Alfred, Ann, Matilda, William, Robert (my grandfather), Isaac and Stanley. I have a little more info if any of this matches. Keith

Hello folks, an update! been talking more to my mother (Daughter of Freda Millicent Last) who lived in the Saxmundham area, my Sarah last (pobably Hazel) was married to Henry Joseph Last (siblings Robert m Walter & Elizabeth) The name Joseph & the dates make me think his father likely to be Joseph (son of George) can anyone confirm? Yes, I would like to discuss further. You are the line I'm looking for. Actually, my interest is in your, I believe, great grandfather and great grandmother. The latter, Agnes (Menzies) Last is a relative of my wife. There were some interesting stories that her estate had been plundered by a relative and her husband took over the investigation of the affairs which eventually led to some interesting occurrences. My father was Carl F. A. Last (10 July 1922-17 May 1991. His sister, Mary Lucile married John Smith. Both were killed in a car accident in 1956. However, they are survived by 2 daughters. There's also a Sarah LAST nee CAPON who married a William LAST in 4Q 0f 1864, who could also match your Sarah. He was living in Bruisyard in 1861.
I have no firm details of her or her family, but William was a GGUncle of mine, a son of George LAST (c.1812-c.1890) and Mahala LAST nee BURGESS (?) (c.1817-c.1892).

My Last family settled in Wisconsin, the Grafton, Ozaukee Co., Wisconsin (and possibly Port Washington) areas. The first one here in my family was Johann LAST (abt 1820 Prussia - bef 1880 Wisconsin) and his wife Charlotte STRASSMAN (20 Jul 1817 Germany - 20 Apr 1900, Grafton, WI).

I then descend from their son, Carl F H LAST (who sometimes seems to go by Charles Carl) (26 Sep 1851 Doeringshagen, Pommerania - 5 Jun 1926 Port Washington, WI) and his wife August Johanna LUEDTKE (3 Jul 1863 Storkow, Pommerania - 14 Jul 1863 Grafton, WI)
