I descend from the family of Nicholas Latherow (also spelled Leathera, Lathera, Lathero, Lederah, Littera, Leterach and Lederach). But never Latheraux, in any records I've ever seen.
Nicholas Jr. was born about 1768 in a place unknown at this time. Nicholas first appears in the tax records for Maccungie Township (there are different spellings of the township over the years), Northampton, PA with his father in 1789. Since he had to have been at least 21 to appear in the tax records, and since he appears as age 26 - 45 in the 1800 census, he was probably born between 1765 - 1768.
His father, Nicholas, appears in the tax records for Maccungie Township, Northampton, PA, in 1781 - 1793. (He was not listed in the list of residents for the township in 1773.)
In 1777, residents of Pennsylvania were required to swear allegiance to the State, by a new provision in the general militia law. Severe penalties were imposed against any white male who refused to take the oath, including having his property and estate confiscated. Thereafter, he was compelled to show his certificate upon demand, as proof of his loyalty, and anyone who could not show such a certificate was liable to be arrested as a spy if he tried to leave the city or county of his residence. Nicholas Sr. took his Oath of Allegiance in Northamption County on 20 Mar 1778, and his son, Nicholas Jr., took his upon reaching 18 years of age, in May 1784.
There were no birth records kept during this time, so I am certainly curious as to which birth record you are referring to that states that Nicholas' "port of origin" was Belgium.
You also mentioned that the name was originally "Clatheraux, which is french in origin". Where did you get "Clatheraux" from????? Even if you mistyped and meant to type "Latheraux", I would be very interested in seeing what record you have that records the name this way, and why you think that spelling is the "correct" one over all the other spellings in the records.
If you do have some birth or baptism records which clear up any of this, perhaps you would be willing to share your sources or the actual records with the rest of us.

I would certainly be very interested in seeing your sources. I haven't worked on this family for a couple of years (been working on other families), but did some fairly extensive research before that, having worked on my own family history for over 10 years now. Thank you for the offer to send your info with sources. I appreciate it very much!

I'll find the paper and scan it in for you, though most of the records can be found through Ancestry.com. I've spent several years doing this research including working with the Mormon's Genealogical Research Groups in California, Pennsylvania, and Florida. They are a great free-resource if you have a local stake near you. I have compiled both written and oral records so yes, some of them are 'family history' and some are government recorded. I have not been able to get past the 1640s though. I was able to find the first recorded Latherow birth (a girl) in the states (1642 I believe). Census records may not list port of origin, but birth records do. This was where I got Belgium from.

Thanks for the reply. Seems like you are using a lot of guesswork here, and I don't use assumptions in my research. Also, as far as I know, census records do not list a port of origin. I appreciate you responding though.

Census records state Belgium as the port of origin, doesn't necessarily mean that's where they were from, but the name is French in origin 'Clatheraux' so we can assume he's originally from the France, Belgium, Lux. area.

I don't recognize the name Harrity Latherow, sorry.
I'm not sure what you're looking for. There are many resources available online for free, but at some point you are going to have to pay for records in order to do any meaningful research. Perhaps if I know what specifically you're looking for, then I could make some suggestions as to how to find it.

Re: Latherow family in Pennsylvania

Hi, please contact me off-line at tamisan@gmail.com, I have several generations going back to Nicholas the first in the late 1760s. If you can give me a rough timeline, I can search my records.

***some info on info on Nicholas, Jr. and family***

Nicholas Lederach (Jr.) was consripted into the 7th class of the Northampton County (Penn.) Militia in 1784. That Militia was disbanded in 1786. According to the census records his date of birth was 1765 or earlier, making him a minimum of 47 at the time of the census, so he would have been conscripted at the minimum age of 22. Since all records indicate that he came from the Brussles, Belgium Port with his father (Nicholas, the first), he would most likely have been born in France, Belgium, Luxemborg, or Germany. If the Lederach spelling is correct, more than likely he came from Luxemborg or Germany.

Nicholas Lederach, Jr. first appears in Shirley Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania Tax Records of 1810. This would reflect taxes due the previous year. He is listed as a tenant farmer paying taxes on 300 acres. It was common practice for absentee landowners to rent to an individual or family in exchange for the payment of the taxes. Nicholas is taxed as an "Inhabitant" rather than a "Single Freeman". This would indicate that he was married at the time of taxation. John Latherow is also listed. He is married, having been taxed as an "Inhabitant" and not a "Single Freeman". He also taxed at the rate of non-landowners. This would mean he is probably living in the household of his father since there are no other Latherows listed on the census. Even if he were in another home he would have been enumerated.

Previous records found indicate that the first child born in the U.S. was Kessiah Latherow (girl), who died 3 days later, but this most likely would have been Nicholas, Jr.s Aunt.

Upon examination of the 1810 census, Nicholas Latherow is married and has children. Here is what the census reveals: One male between the ages of 0 and 10; two males between the ages of 10 and 16; two males between the ages of 16 and 26; nobody between the ages of 26 and 45; and one male 45 years old or older.

This shows the oldest child to be a male: between 16-26.

Oldest: Jordan Reformed Congregation records from South Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Penn. record the birth of a Jacob Lederach to Nicholas and Catharine on 3 Feb. 1788, with his baptisim on 23 March 1788. This places him at 21 years of age. **It is interesting to note that his sponsors were a Peter Lang and a Maria Lederach, possibly an aunt and either a neighbor, friend, or Maria's future husband.

Then in 1816 Daniel Latherow appears in the Shirley Township tax records as a Single Freeman. He would have been born about 1795 depending on his day and month of birth.

John Latherow then appears in 1817, setting his date of birth two years later about 1797. John Latherow's name was listed in the 1818 Huntingdon Globe Newspaper asking forgiveness of debts. No other information is known about John Latherow of this generation.

William Latherow, born 1802, and died October 31, 1854 in Wayne Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. This would place him as age 8 at the time of the 1810 census.

This leaves one additional male child unaccounted for in the census of 1810, he may not have lived to reach 21. No records at this time are known.

The females listed were as follows: One female between 0-10; three females between the ages of 10 and 16; no females between 16 and 26; and one female between 26 and 45 (wife: Catherine). No females were listed above the age of 45.

So the three oldest children would be between 10-16 and the youngest between 0-10.

I'm still collecting data (just ordered at book that should help), but will check my records at home and get back to you asap. Good luck and Good hunting.

~Tamisan Latherow

Latherow family in Pennsylvania

Seeking information on the Latherow family in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. I have found records indicating that my ggggrandmother's last name was Latherow, but don't yet know her first name. She married my ggggrandfather, Frederick Kitt around 1815 and would have been born between 1794 - 1800 and died between 1830 - 1840. I believe her brothers are William and Jacob. Her father could be Nicholas Latherow (N. Lathera in the 1810 census). Does anyone have information on this family?
