My name is Ginette Latour. My dad's name is Armand Latour who was born in Matheson, Ontario Canada. My grand-parents were Napolean and Yvette Latour. I was born in Manitouwadge, Ontario in Feb.7, 1972 and have a twin sister Annette, an older brother Gilles and an older sister Julie. My dad was born March 21, 1936. There were 10 in my dads family, however only 6 girls and my dad remain alive. If anyone would like to know anything about the Latour family, I will try to get your answers replied to you as soon as possible.

My husband Gordon Paquette is the grandson of Edward James Latour and Victoria Riel and we are looking for info on their native ancestry.

Any info you have would be helpful. I cannot find a birth registry for Victoria Riel but the family seems to think she is related to Louis Riel but don't know from which sibling.

Thanks, Gail Paquette

I believe I am a desendent of Peter "Pierre Latour"

His wife listed is Marcelline Rancourt. They had a son by the name of Edward James Latour born March 1 1868 in Eganville, Ont. he married a Victoria Riel. They in turn had these children of which I am aware. (These dates are based on past information I have found)
Victoria, Edward james, Jean Baptiste, Olive, Rochelle, Antonine, Maggie, Paul, Rene and Veronique (Veronica).

Veronica is my Grandmother on my fathers side. She married a Felix Lance (my grandfather) and they had 4 boys. Joseph, Emerald Danial, Samuel Mark and Ovela. Samuel is my father.

If these names and dates line up I would love to swap information with you. I really am looking forward to hearing from you.

Bev

I don't think I will be able to help you with Josephine Latour born 1884. I can give you a possibility only. She could very well be of my line of Latour's but I don't have anything specific. What I can give you is what I have on my direct line. My 2nd great grandfathers name is Moise/Moses Latour born 1856. Moses came to Duluth, MN via Valleyfield Town, Canada in 1882. He settled in Duluth with his wife. If it is of the same family Josephine Latour could be Moses niece. I will give you Moses's parents and his brothers and sisters if you would like to follow up.
"Pierre Latour, born Pierre Balard-dit-Latour. Pierre Latour married his first wife, Angelique Rivet as Balard-dit-Latour. Pierre married his second wife Marceline Monet on April 27, 1847 as only Latour, at St. Thimothee, St. Thimothee, Quebec, Canada. Pierre Latour and Marceline Monet had the following children: Ephraim Latour 1847, Pierre Latour 1848, Desire Latour 1849, Zelia Latour 1851,Felix Latour 1852, Aime Latour 1854, Moise Latour 1856, Felicite Latour 1857,(Fred) Joseph Elfrid Latour 1859, Adele Latour 1861."

Hi ~ I'm not sure if I'm looking for the same line of LaTour's as your family ~ However, I thought I'd ask if you may have some info as I've come to a dead end.

My name is Jeni Juleff. My father was Robert Paul Juleff. His father was Charles Juleff and Charles was married to Josephine LaTour. I know Josephine was born in Wisconsin in 1884. As a teen, it appears she worked for a family in Michigan with the last name of Lafortun as a cook. She met and married Charles Juleff in Michigan circa late 1800's/early 1900. Charles Juleff was a miner.

If any of this may sound familar ..... please let me know.

Thanks!

In an old family history note I am looking at I show Moses>Gilbert>Clevis childrens name as - Darrel, Darwin, Darlene, Dione. I know very little about Gilbert and Clevis at this time but I am trying to learn more. I know a ton of the ancestors before these persons on the Latour line going back to the 1650's. Feel free to contact me and I am more than willing to get you a copy of all the pictures, documentation, and history I have compiled as of this time. Regards.

I am not 100% sure but the person you are referring to may be related to my Moses aka Moise Latour that the following posts are referring to. My Moses / aka Moise Latour was born in 1856 and most likely this is not your Moses as his children do not match the one you mention. However I think I may know your Moise. My 2nd great grandfathers name was Moses Latour. In his baptism I noted that his Godfathers name was also Moise Latour. I believe I found this man in census. Here he is:
@ca.qc.beauharnois.valleyfield_town page 120 film C13207 lds1375843
24 LATOUR Moïse m 49 Que RC French journalier/day labourer married
25 LATOUR {?} Mathilde f 43 Que RC French married
page 121
1 LATOUR Theophile m 13 Que RC French fileur (spinner)

You posted on Ancestry about Joseph Dennis Latour a long time ago. 7 years. I am trying to get a hold of the ancestors of Joseph Dennis Latour. My Great Grandfather was his brother, Henry Oliver Latour. I have a ton of pictures of Joseph Dennis and my Great grandfather together. Also my great grandfather moved down to TX for a short time. I would really like to hook up with them to share information. I have the latour line tied all the way back to 1650 and have pretty much written a book on it all including all original documents. Please write me back at tplatour@us.ibm.com or jtlatour@comcast.net I am pretty sure that Joseph Dennis was military because I have old pictures of him in uniform escorting my great aunt Viola Latour/Fudenberg to my Grandparents wedding. At least he posed with her. He was quite a stately looking gentleman.

I seldom if ever post personal emails sent to myself. However, due to the belligerent forum postings by Harrison Thomas about myself and the lies he has told about my Acadian ancestors being Black, I felt that I had no choice in the matter but let others know about Harrison Thomas. This is not the only Acadian family he has falsely claimed as his own family lineage.
When I proved him wrong about his connection to the LaTour, Richard, and LeBlanc families he claimed, Harrison's method of revenge was to maliciously publicly post that many of my Acadian ancestors (the first ones to arrive in Louisiana) were Black slaves. This man's conduct is outrageous.

Dear Mr. Crockett,

The research of Mr. Harrison Thomas is well known to me. As early as 1999, he contacted me with indications that he was related to the LaTour family line I have documented on my website. At that time I provided Mr. Thomas with compelling information that there is not compelling
relationship to Homer Latour and Ozeme Latour. Putting aside the matter of race, I could not corroborate nor substantiate his claims and came to the same conclusions as you. There is no apparent genealogical relationship between the family he is researching and the Etienne Alexis Grasset Latour family from France that I have traced to Louisiana.

Over the years, Mr. Thomas has repeatedly asked that I provide a link to his websites, as in his mind the two family are related. I have not done so. To my chagrin, on at least one website, he grafted the French Latour research from my website into his family tree. He then proceeded
to arbitrarily link the LaTour family to the royalty of Europe. According this this flight of fancy, my wife and I showed up on this website as distant relatives to the late Lady Diana of England and other European royalty. We are not.

This is all too sad. At times, Mr. Thomas seems to pursue credible research, providing documentation of his findings. Unfortunately, he takes extreme liberties to bridge gaps where no documentation has been found and draws conclusions that I have yet to see substantiated.

A word about my research. You are correct the much of the original LaTour family research I have was done by my late father-in-law Raymond Latour from Ville Platte. His sister Annabelle Latour also did much research, but became
discouraged when trying to trace the family back to France. In 1998, I hired a professional genealogist in France, Martine Duhamel, to pick up the trail. She pushed the family back to the early 18th century to the Bergerac region of France where the trail disappeared. I was able
to share this information with Annabelle shortly before she passed away.

In corroborating Raymond Latour's research, I used Hébert's Southwest Louisiana Records series as well as doing some microfilm research at the National Archives of federal censuses. For some family relationships from Quebec, I have used Jetté's Dictionnaire généalogique des familles du
Québec. I also have received information from currently living family members.

Thank your for taking the time to contact me and
provide my with your reasearch.

Richard Zeutenhorst
Arlington, Virginia
Pierre Grasset LaTour-Homer LaTour and Irresponsible and Incorrect Research

I am posting this information due to the confusion that certain researchers have concerning the line of Pierre Grasset LaTour and his son, Homer LaTour. Here are my findings and conclusions on this particular family.
I have also contacted descendants of the Pierre Grasset LaTour line and they are in agreement with my research as it matches their own. Homer LaTour married only once and that was to Emily Pasquier. He never fathered any children other than his two daughters, Marie Emilie and Alice Felicie, who are listed in Father Hebert’s SWLA records and the St. Landry Parish, LA census records. The Homer LaTour who married Emily Pasquier did not father a Black son with another woman. Pierre Grasset LaTour was of the White race as was his son, Homer. This is made perfectly evident by the census records. One researcher cited the 1850 and 1860 St. Landry Parish, LA Slave Schedules as proof that Pierre Grasset LaTour and his son, Homer LaTour were either Black or Mulatto. That is incorrect as the age, sex, and race listed in these census records are strictly for the slaves and not the owners. These slave schedules are lists of inventory and the owner is not part of that inventory. Please see my earlier posting regarding how to read a slave schedule. It is fairly straightforward and simple.
I am well aware that Whites of Acadian or French descent had children with Blacks or Mulattos. However, caution needs to be exercised here and not confuse the descendants of slaves with the Black or Mulatto descendants of the Acadians or French who settled in Louisiana. Many slaves took the names of their masters and do not have any Acadian or French blood. I have seen researchers take the name of an Acadian descendant that they found in Father Hebert’s SWLA records which matches a name in their own family and attach that person to a particular Acadian family where the parents are not even listed in these records for that person. I have seen where a Black child is represented by a researcher as being the child of a White couple with no known Black ancestry. This is what is called irresponsible speculation which has no place in the documentation of one’s family genealogy. I am seeing this done over and over again and it is not sound research. I guess that I am a truth seeker and would like to see accurate information posted on the Acadians who settled in Louisiana and their descendants. We owe them that much. I have recently learned that may be too much to hope for. We are who we are and the truth is the truth. No amount of lies or fabricating of one’s ancestral lineage can alter that fact. I for one am very weary of seeing shoddy and irresponsible research on these genealogy sites. I do understand that some researchers may honestly be confused regarding their ancestry but some are willfully posting incorrect data and know that it is incorrect. What sort of heritage is this to leave for posterity. It shows no pride in the truth and rightful origins of the researchers who post such information. It shows no pride in their own ancestry. If I were the ancestor of some of these researchers, I would be ashamed at how they treated the memory of their own people. It is denial of the worst kind.
The records listed below support my findings.

Year: 1850 State: Louisiana Parish: St Landry Sheet No: 126B
Reel No: M432-240 Page No: 251
Enumerated on: Nov 28, 1850 by: L.E.

From Fontenot, Keith P., Southwest Louisiana Courthouse Inventory, Volume One, (LC-9678609), 1996, p. 427-428. [Note: Grasset Latour is incorrectly listed as Gustave Latour.]

Hébert, Southwest Louisiana Records, v.2 (1811-1830): Latour, Pierre Grasset de Bergerac, Pres, de Bordeau dept. de la Dordogne (Jean Grasset & Marie Bertrand) m. 4 Jul 1826 Felicia Frangebois of Iberville Parish (Opel. Ch.: v.1, pp.466 & 466A).

1850 St. Landry Parish Census (sheet 126, .l 30-41) lists Gracest Latour, age 57; Felicie, age 39; Homere, age 18, and Alfred, age 12. All born in France [sic]; occupation, gunsmith; value of real estate: $700.

Hébert, SLR: Latour, Grasset d. 4 Dec 1860 at age 62 (Opel. Ch.: v.2, p.130).

Volume 2, covering the period from 1811 to 1830, takes us into Louisiana’s early statehood. The presentation of abstracts continues as in volume 1, except that a deceased parent is indicated by a “d” preceding the name of the parent. Also in volume 2 is “An Introduction to Black Genealogy.” This is interesting reading for all, since it illustrates the power of the Catholic church in early Louisiana. Volume 2 also contains the St. Landry Parish Brand Book (1810-1832) and records of the Academy of the Sacred Heart Archives in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. These include baptisms, vows, confirmations, lists of religious, and deaths.

Volume 3 covers 1831 to 1840, a period that saw the development of the western part of St. Landry Parish and its separation as Calcasieu Parish in 1840. This volume contains entries from the Register of Blacks, St. Landry Church, Opelousas, and also features an 1839 map of land owners on Bayou Courtableu and Bayou Teche.

Harrison Thomas LaTour
LaTour Genealogical Research Services

This child of Pierre Grasset LaTour and Felicia Franchebois was b. 28 Nov. 1829, and was bt.= baptized 21 Nov. 1830

LATOUR, Jean Omera (Grasset & Felicia FRANGEBOIS [FRANCHEBOIS])
b. 28 Nov. 1829, bt. 21 Nov. 1830 Pats: Jean Grasset LATOUR & Marie
BERTRAND; Mats: Jean FRANGEBOIS [FRANCHEBOIS] & Felicite VIGE;
Spons: Jean FRANCHEBOIS fils [FRANCHEBOIS Jr.] & Clarisse ELMOR
[perhaps ELMER]. Fr. Flavius Henri ROSSI (Opel. Ch.: v.3, p.139)

This record says that the child of Pierre Grasset LaTour was buried, two (2) days after he was bt.= baptized.

LATOUR, Jean Omira (Grasset & Felicia FRANGEBOIS) buried 23 Nov. 1830
in the parish cemetery at age 1 year. Fr. Henry Flavius ROSSI
(Opel. Ch.: v.2, p.19)

This is the child in the 1850 Census, he now is a 21 year old man, living next to his uncle, Alexis Grasset LaTour and his wife Catherine Doucet.

1850 United States Federal Census

Name: Omcara Latour
Age: 21
Estimated birth year: abt 1829
Birth Place: Louisiana
Gender: Male
Home in 1850
(City,County,State): St Landry, Louisiana

Lee Crockett is saying that this child is Augustin Meara (Homer) LaTour, b. 8-10-1849 and instead of 21 years old, it should read 12 months of age. Instead of being born in 1829 it should read 1849.

Augustin Meara (Homer) LaTour is the son of Alexis LaTour and Catherine Doucet, however, that is not him in the 1850 census. The political correct thing is, the child born in 1849l, was not mentioned in the 1850 census, not all children are mentioned in census records, and probably most children under the age of 1 would be omitted.

The Creole Ancestry of Homer A. LaTour
http://www.lazeut.com/genweb/latoursyl/fam00037.htm

Homer A. LaTour was born to Pierre Grasset LaTour and Felicite (Felicia) Françhebois. His third (3rd) Great-Grandmother was Catherine Laurendine.

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kinghar...

Catherine Lorandini was b. Abt. 1725, Biloxi, Mississippi. The daughter of French Soldier, Pierre II Lorandini and his black mistress Anne Marie Francois Coilet.

Pierre Laurendine, a French soldier who came to Mobile in 1719. One son, Edward Laurendine, is the ancestor of the Caucasian line. Another son, Jean Baptiste Laurendine Sr., is the ancestor of the Creole branch, through his son, John Baptiste Jr.

Their story is one of many two-sided families and not unlike many around the South: a white slave master man and his offspring -- the "legitimate" ones born to him by his white wife and the "illegitimate" ones born to him by his black mistress.

Such was not the case for the Laurendines. Several of the descendants of Jean Baptiste Sr., were listed as being married to Creoles or people of "color." Both sides of the Laurendines descended from married couples.

One group inherited their father's name and social standing in the community. The other group may have received their father's name, but were automatically relegated to lesser status due to their black African ancestry.

John Baptiste Laurendine Sr. is listed as having married Lucia Coulleret, the daughter of his half sister, Catherine. A Creole woman from Biloxi, Catherine was the daughter of Pierre and his first wife. John Baptiste Sr. was the son of Pierre and his second wife, Marie Anne Fourchet, a French woman sent from Paris to marry and populate the colonies.

According to the Laurendine genealogy chart, Jean Baptiste Jr., never married, but had seven children with a "free mulatto" named Rosita Miraguan.

Harrison Thomas LaTour
LaTour Genealogical Collection

Hi Donna. If I am not mistaken you are one of the decendents of Moses and Viteline. I am scanning the net and making sure anyone interested knows this family line has been tied up. Moses, Felix and Fred who came to the area in 1880's were 3 of 10 total children. I am Tom Latour, son of Henry Chester Latour, son of Leonard Chester Latour, son of Henry Oliver Latour, who is brother to Gilbert, and son of Moses. If you want any details about the family line you are welcome to contact me. I believe you are already in contact with the Latours in Duluth of Archie's line, twin brother of Henry Oliver and brothers to Gilbert. Regards - Tom Latour

LaTour 1852 Germany/Netherlands, 1873 Scott Cnty, MN

I have at least 2 LaTour's connected to my Janssen branch. Peter J. LaTour(b. 1852 Rhineland, Germany) m. Maria C. Janssen(b. Heinsburg, Netherlands).

Also Mary LaTour (b. 1873 Scott Cnty, MN) m. Leonard J. Jansen (b. Heinsburg, Germany). NOTICE: the same place but different Country.

These 2 LaTour/Janssen families have descendants/siblings found b. in Scott, Carver, and Wright Counties, MN.

My Janssen branch goes back to the early 1600's in Belgium.

I am not really looking for LaTour links at this time---but am willing to share what I do have for possible help with other areas of my Family Tree.

I am looking for the occupations and socio-economics of my Jansen line in MN/Europe. More info about their daily living.

If you reply to this posting, BE PATIENT, as I do not have the time, right now, to check my reply email account as often as I would like. I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Many other related surnames in MN and beyond.

At the very least, this will possibly give someone new places to search for evidence of their LaTour ancestors.

Happy Hunting!

Carolyn
