Variations on the Lötschar Family Name
A Brief History
SWITZERLAND 1554-to date
My oldest records of the Lötschar family name are for a Peter Lötschar, born about 1554 in Frutigen, Switzerland. A Hans Lötscher (possibly the son of Peter) is born about 1601 “near Erlenbach†which is a village about 10 KM northwest of Frutigen. Both of these towns are about 10 KM southwest of Spies in the Cannon of Bern. Descendants of these families in Switzerland have surname variations including:
Lötschar Lötscher Lattschar Loetscher Loertscher Lortscher
GERMANY 1680 to date
The first members of the Lötschar family moved from Switzerland into Germany around 1680, and began spelling the name “Lotscharâ€. In 1715 additional members of the family migrated to Germany and added the spellings: “Lotscher†and “Lattscharâ€. German variations of the surname include:
Lotscher Latscha Latschar Lescher Lotschar Lattschar
FRANCE 1700 to date
In about 1700, the first members of the family moved from Germany into the Alsace-Lorain districts of what was then Germany, and later became France. They brought the surname spelling of “Latschaâ€. The only French variation of the surname I have encountered is:
Latscha
THE NETHERLANDS 1715 to date
The first members of the family moved from Switzerland to the Netherlands in about 1715, bringing the surname spelling of “Lotscherâ€. These were members of the same family that moved into Germany at about the same time, and members of the German family later re-migrated to join those in the Netherlands. Variations of the surname spelling in The Netherlands include:
Lotscher Leutscher
SWEDEN 1720 to date
The first members of the family moved from Germany to Sweden around 1720, bringing the surname spelling of “Lotscherâ€. Swedish variations of the surname include:
Lotscher Lottscher
UNITED STATES of AMERICA 1728 to date
The family came to the USA in several waves, from different countries. The earliest migrations were from Germany and brought the surname spellings of “Latscharâ€, “Lescherâ€, and “Lattscherâ€. Later migrations from Switzerland (Lotschar) and France (Latscha) brought other surname spellings to the USA. Variations of the surname spelling in the USA include:

Lattscher Latscha Latcha Latchar Latchaw Lotshaw
CANADA 1800 to date
The family came to Canada in the 1800s from the United States, settling mostly in Ontario. They brought the surname spelling of “Latshawâ€. There are several records of Latshaw family members migrating back and fourth between the US and Canada since the 1800s. The only Canadian variation of the surname I have encountered is:
