Re: Rupert N. Latture

Professor Rupert Nelson Latture was an educator at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia for many, many years. He was also founder of the Omicron Delta Kappa honorary society in 1914. He graduated as Valedictorian of his class at W & L in 1915. He served in the first World War, and afterwards returned to W & L as a teacher. When I went to W & L in 1985, he was still there, as professor emeritus, and I think he ran the Alumni House, though he was supposed to be retired. He was a very gracious, dignified Southern gentleman...one of the first people I met when I got to W & L. during my years as a student there, I often wondered what it would have been like to have met General Robert E. Lee, who was president of then Washington College from 1865 to 1870. Looking back on it, I imagine meeting General Lee would have been a lot like meeting Professor Latture. They seem to have been the same sort of person...typifying all that was best in the South.

Regards,

John Field Pankow
Asheville, NC

Hi Teresa, Lets see if you have info that can help me unravel this one. I have a cousin Pearl McKamey whose line of descent is:
Harmon Latture (1776) >
Samuel Latture >
Jacob Latture >
Emeline Latture (mother) + James Howel McKamey (father) >
Willie "Pearl" McKamey

I have a photograph showing 4 people. The date 1901 is handwritten on the back along with their names:
Mrs Robert McKamey
William Hodge
Edna Hodge
Pearl McKamey

Do any of these people show up in your Latture tree?

It's located about a mile north of Highway 11-W in the Central Heights Community of Sullivan County. If you can find Silvacola, TN on a map you are just about there. Cheers, Janet

Hi Theresa, My GGrandmother was one of the 9 children of Jacob Latture and Mary Ann Jones. After Mary Ann died Jacob married Susan Elizabeth Feathers Weaver. And you figured it out - Susan was the widow of Abram Weaver. Susan helped Jacob raise those of his younger children who were still at home, including my GGrandmother Josie Latture who dearly loved her "Ma Weaver". Josie was also close to the 2 children her father and "Ma Weaver" had, Samuel and Leona. I have pictures of most of these people. Cheers, Janet
