Re: James Maitland Lauderdale (The Immigrant) wife

That is an excellent question. And who were his parents?

What's happened to the women in this line? I have been unable to identify several of them as follows:

Who was the wife of James Maitland Lauderdale the immigrant?

Who was the wife of his son John Lauderdale Sr?

John Sr's son Robert Lauderdale of Blout County had a wife I believe was named Sarah Little. However, their son Robert Lauderdale Jr 1784-c1830 was married, but his wife's name is unknown. Who was she?

I have never seen any actual evidence of the name of the wife of James Maitland Lauderdale the immigrant, or exactly who his parents were either. There are a lot of theories and maybes floating around. When someone finds out, I would love to know.

I got much of my information from Clint Lauderdale and from his book "History of the Lauderdales in America," 1998, Heritage Books) which was insightful yet leaves many questions unanswered.

Thanks and I hope we find answers to these great questions.

Robert Awalt
San Diego
spaniels2006@hotmail.com

John, David does not have a headstone. He is buried by his two little boys and Aunt Rushia. I know where the graves are and I have been intending to place markers or tombstones. However I have not found the care taker for cemetery and the church is now closed. But I promised my mother that I would get markers for their graves.

Robert never went to MO. There are about two Robert L Lauderdales. Our Robert died in Limestone Co. AL November 1879. I forgot to ask my grandmother where he is buried but it is in Limestone Co or Lauderdale Co. Rachel died in 1909 and is buried there also. They lived on the border of Lauderdale & Limestone Co. so it could be either. I think they were buried on the property but not sure. If you have access to Ancestry, I can give you permission to view or add or correct data. It is private until I get all the cobwebs out and corrected. Go to Wadkins Family Tree.
Greetings, I made an assumption relating to David's death date, as he was shown on the 1920 Hardin County Census residing with Angus. Also, found record of Angus & Della burial at Morris Chapel, but did not see reference to David. Relating to David's siblings; internet source www.angelfire.com/folk/ancesters/Lauderdale is where I found information regarding William's children, by both Betsy & Salita. William is shown as #77,you may have that already and more. I do have record of 1820 census of William (Lincoln Co., TN) that shows 4 males (10-16 yr.), 1 male (16-26 yr), 1 male (45 yr. up)/ 2 females (under 10) 1 female (16-26 yr). This would be prior to the birth of Robert & additional children with Salita (she's the 16-26 yr in census?). All told it would seem that William had 7 children with Betsy and 6 with Salita.
By Wilma, do you mean Wilma Meyers? If so, you have done quite some research. Wilma is my sister, about 17 years senior.
Regarding Robert, he is shown in census of 1860 in Giles County, TN; 1870 in Limestone with family. I think he was in Jackson Co., MO during the 1880 census, but will have to find my notes. It seems the more I pursue family ties the more confused I become; hope that's not your case.
David Lauderdale is buried in Morris Chapel TN at the United Methodist Church. David died in 1920. A lot of (our) family is buried there. I have the Lauderdale history traced back and recently found another researcher. Last year I found the descendants of David's sister Jane. So I have that information. Are you Wilma's nephew? My gaps are finding the descendants of Robert & Rachel. Wm was married to Betsy Willis & Salita Touchstone. I have found that two siblings lived in another county but can't find their descendants. Do you have info on David siblings?

Yes, Lauderdale Co. Alabama is part of our family history. As well as Lauderdale Co TN & MS.

That is amazing! My mom knows so little about her family. I didn't even know if my grandfather (Charles) was an only child or not. About all I know is that his mom was Barbara and he had a bunch of kids. Also Barbara had several names? Barbara Yonkers, Morris, Lauderdale? I'm only just starting to look into my mom's side of the family. I have tons of information on my dad side.

I just wish my mom was more interested in her history. I know she has the roll number for Charles mom from the Choctaw reservation in OK. I guess I'll just keep bugging her about it :-)

Thank you so so much for responding!
Laura Rachel Conroy
KcDogRescer@yahoo.com
I've only started researching ancestors this past year; based upon my Mother & Aunts telling me that Lauderdale County, AL was named after their Mother's side of the family. My notes are somewhat unorganized, as I've been searching both sides of family at the same time. Anyway, I have some of Robert's siblings also. Do you have history on his father, William? William was married twice, with his 2nd wife being the parent of Robert.
Rushia's daughter Cora was my mother; she had 3 additional sisters, Sadie, Ethel & Willie. I'll check on pictures, a sister in Oregon may have more. Do you have a burial location on David; I've only got that he died in 1921 in Hardin County? Anyway, so much to say, but better cut short. Let me know your blank areas, maybe I can help.
Regards, John

John, I'm so happy to receive your post. I have been trying to find all of David Lauderdale's family for over 10 years. I am very willing to share what I have with you. David was married to Ellen Lasser and they had Rushia, Angus & Willie. Willie was about 3 months old when she died. After Ellen died David married Nancy Josephine McLemore, and they became parents of my grandmother Cora and Aunt Whitten. There were several other children but all died young. I have pictures to share of our ancestors... do you have any? Which one of Rushia's children do you descent? I have Robert's siblings and have been trying to locate all of them. I have found a few.

Hi, This is very late reply; but David was also my GGrandfather. His daughter, Rushia, was my Grandmother. I have Robert's father as William Lauderdale (Lincoln Co., TN, who died around 1832). I think I have some of Robert's siblings, but would have to check notes. Would be happy to share info with you. Who was your grandparent on David's side (besides Rushia, I only have Angus & Willie)?
Regards, John

Martha Trosper was born in 1820 in either NC or KY. She was widowed by 1850. Based on the ages of the children, I am guessing that John Lauderdale died between 1848 and 1850 in MO. Lauderdale, b. @1843 in MO,; James H. Lauderdale, b. @ 1845 in MO,; Robert T. Lauderdale, born @ 1847 in MO, Calvin B. Lauderdale, b.@ July 185o in Daviess County, MO.
In 1850, Martha is listed as widowed, with all of the children living in Daviess County, MO with a Joseph PAUSEY and his wife, Nancy J.
If anyone has any additional information on this Lauderdale family, I would love to hear from you.

Jim Lauderdale, born abt 1855 TN, Zollie, Minnie, Paul Lauderdale, (b.1881-1890), of Archer Co., TX

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Jim Lauderdale, with Zollie, Minnie, and Paul”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1891-92, in Dallas, TX, and the children look to be about ages 7 (Zollie – a boy), 5 (Minnie) and 2 (Paul).

I found Minnie and Paul, living in 1900 with grandmother Rachel Lauderdale, born 1835, a widow in Archer Co., TX. Minnie’s DOB was Aug 1886, and Paul’s was Mar 1890. Their father was born in Tennessee. I found James Lauderdale, born in TN, in Dallas in 1900 census, age 45, in St. Paul’s Sanitarium. I did not find Zollie in any census, however WWI Draft Registrations show Zollie Lauderdale was born Dec 1883.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to this Lauderdale family.

Hi, my name is Eve Dennis I am the granddaughter of Fred J. Lauderdale your grandfathers brother. My mother is Barbara Lauderdale. Your Uncle Chris came for my grandfathers funeral back in 2002. I had contact with one of our cousins Kathy Oates awhile back but have since lost contact, she has done a lot of research on our family and has a lot of information. I met your grandfather once when he came to visit his brother Fred (my grandfather)here in Seaside,CA the next day after he returned home from his visit is when he (your grandfather Chuck) passed away on July 23,1982. We also remember your grandmother Virginia, we had a lot of fun when they visited. I also lost contact with your Uncle Chris and would like to let him know that my Grandmother Lorraine Lauderdale (Fred's wife) passed away October 4,2006. Email me when you get a chance we probably can share a lot of information.
Have a great day,
Eve

James Maitland Lauderdale (The Immigrant) wife

I guess all the American Lauderdales here trace back to James Maitland Lauderdale the Immigrant. The man officially accepted by Clan Maitland.

Problem being that his specific lineage is officially unknown and undocumented. I know, it's a shame, what an interesting and historic family. We would all like to be part owners of Thirlstane Castle...at least get free parking there.

OK, so I can't put all those amazing Maitlands on my family tree. But what about the wife of James Maitland Lauderdale? How sure are we about her? One possibility for her I saw on ancestry I am discounting because the same person shows James M. Lauderdale born in Thirlstane Castle.

Would someone tell me if James the Immigrant's wife is officially known and then of course HER lineage. I am tired of assembling thousands of ancient names that fall apart after a false link. I have seen another name, and I am curious if the other Lauderdales here name it and are sure about it. Is she tracable more so than her husband?

Is there a location named Lauderdale or Lauderthal in Germany (perhaps in Mecklenburg)?
I am supposedly descended from a Baron Lauderthal.
My ancestor Johann Lederer/Lauder came over from Brunswick (Braunschwieg) in the 18th century. He had a son Christian Lathers who is my great-great-great grandfather.
I know there is a Brunswick in Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony).
Also Johann settled in the Palatine area of upstate New York, but if he came from Mecklenburg then he may not have been considered part of the Palatine migration. --Thanks in advance.
I found your posting on Ancestry and even though it is an old posting, I thought I would reply. My gggrandfather was Robert L. Lauderdale born about 1810-1811 in Lincoln Co., TN. He is the son of William & Salaida Lauderdale He married Rachel Surber, daughter of Joseph Kendrick Surber and Rebecca Crawford. If this connects to your line or you have any leads, I can help with my line.
