Calling all Belmullet Lavelles!!!

Hello folks,

I have been researching my family history for years now and I keep hearing how all of us Lavelles trace are roots back to Belmullet and then we hit the road block.

I realize that there are a lot of Lavelles in Mayo and a great deal located right in Belmullet – why can’t we seem to connect the dots further? Here is a breakdown of mine Lavelle line as best as I can attest:

John Lavelle and Catherine (Godman) Lavelle – my great great grandparents born and died in Ireland.

John and Catherine had the following children:

Jenny (1870 Ireland–1917 Philadelphia)
Katie (circa 1876 Ireland)
Annie (1876 Ireland-1937 Philadelphia)
Bridget (circa 1879)
Norah (1879 Ireland-1927 Philadelphia)
Patrick J. Lavelle (1880 Belmullet – 1960 Philadelphia)
Andrew (1882 Ireland-1917 buried in Philadelphia)
Peter (1886 Ireland-1912 buried in Philadelphia)
Sarah (Born in Ireland)

Patrick Lavelle was my great grandfather and I assume that all his siblings were born in Belmullet but I cannot say for sure. I found what I believe is their passenger record, dated 1901 leaving Queenstown. It lists their last residence as Belturbet – which is in Cavan. Perhaps the record taker didn’t understand the accent and wrote Belturbet instead of Belmullet. Who knows.

Anyway, Despite all the Lavelles out there from Belmullet…I am hopeful that someone can take a look at the years listed above, and perhaps find a connection with their Lavelles based on the location, time, and name. If anyone has any insight, please contact me directly at lavelle.s@gmc.edu

Hope to hear from you all soon!

Seán
Anthony Lavelle

Trying to find out more about Anthony Lavelle my great great grandfather. All I know is that he was a farmer from Achill Island, Mayo and was married to Ann Cafferkey (or Cafferty?) Their son John married in 1885 aged 26 in Scotland but I can't find a birth cert for him or any other details of Anthony (there is a story that he was a Hurly player but can't verify this). Any info greatfully received.

Rosa, sadly I have no information on siblings for James Lavelle, Thomas J. Lavelle's father, although I believe James had a brother, Thomas, as well. I haven't found a connection to a Martin B Lavelle, as yet. If I do I'll try and let you know. There are several lines of Lavelle's in both Scranton and Butte. The other line that arrived in Butte about the same time as my Lavelle's, appear to have arrived via Canada. But, since I'm finding that families lost contact with each other or became estranged for one reason or another way back then, a connection could still be out there and I haven't found it, yet. Thanks for saying hello. I'll keep looking.

Hi, My husband family Lavelle are from Scranton also. We live in Idaho. I wonder if we are related some how, because I heard that there are two Lavelles clans in Scranton. Does your Thomas J lavelle have an uncle name Martin B Lavelle or first cousin Michael Ward Lavelle born(1854).

Hi, Dan

I have not heard from you in a while, I hope everything is ok! and family also. I wonder if I can have a copy of old pictures of the family and the letters of geneaology that Francis Michael Lavelle left to your mother Margaret Lavelle (Ward). My daughter would be delightful to have all that information. Thank you for all that information. I know that my father in law was very interested in genealogy. When he met me for first time in Grace Murphy (Lavelle) home his wife and my mother in law, he gave me some papars with a little bit of the tree names of the family Lavelle. If you have more information please don't hesistate to share with us, my daughter and me are trying to complete the geneaological tree as far as we can.

My adress is 360 east 4 south Rexburg Idaho 83440

Thank you so much my daughter would love to be in touch with all her cousins. mariamercedeslavelle@yahoo.com and my email is rosalavelle@yahoo.com

Hope to hear from you soon.

Rosa

Given the proximity of location and dates, we may have common ancestors.

My gr-gr-uncle Patrick Donegan (b. 1881) was from the Sligo area (Tullylin, Dormore West, Castleconnor, Sligo) and his wife's name is unknown to me. I do know that they had 8 children:
1) John - married Celia and had Maria, Una and Patrick
2) Delia - married Jim Barry
3) Nora - married Patrick Nolan
4) Annie
5) Christopher
6) Kathleen - married a Cuffley
7) Patrick
8) Margarette

His parents were John Donegan and Honor Rouse and his grand-parents were John Donegan/Dunigan and Catherine Mullaney and gr-grandparents were John Donegan/Dunigan and Mary Kilcawley.

Patrick's sister Delia married Patrick Barnes and thir daughter Annie married Owen Langon and had son Eugene. He married Kitty McLaughlin.

Any of these names match your names?

I am trying to find descendants on this line of Lavelle's. Thomas J. Lavelle born 1865 in Scranton PA, his son Emmett James Lavelle born in Butte MT in 1895. Emmett had two sons and two daughters, all born in Butte MT. His wife's name was Florence. Son Emmett Jr died at age 6 in 1931; son Thomas was born in January 1927 and died November 1981. When Emmett Sr died in 1950, his daughters Frances and Jean are mentioned in the obituary. Emmett Sr also had a sister, Evangeline b. 1898 who married a Thomas Kilgallon. Another sister was Mercedes b. 1903. All this is in Butte MT. Any assistance finding these descendants would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi. I read your post. My name is Michael Lavelle. My grandmother came over from Ireland, not sure when, but I do know she was called Kitty, and her name either was Katherine or Catherine (Lavelle). She placed her son in an orphanage and this is how I have her name.

She lived in Bronx and had a sister named Mary (big surprise). Her sister married into the Diggins family and I think her later married name (Kitty's) was McGarrigle or Garugle (hard to read the writing).

Does this ring any bells?

Thank you.

Hi,

There is some info here that sort of matches people in my tree. My great grandfather was James Lavelle Mangan b1854 Keel, Achill, Mayo, Ireland. He had a brother Michael born Abt1850, who stayed in Mayo. I have just discovered they had two brothers John b1825 and Edward b1830 who went to the US. James went to the Shetlands and worked for/with a William McFadden, China Merchant. The family history passed down states that the surname Mangan was adopted from the mothers side as the father was a French smuggler (surname 'Mangin' and killed by the British in 1859)He may have changed his name to Patrick Thomas Mangan??

Do you have any further info about this family at all?

Cheers,
Sean

I am not specifically researching the Lavelle line. I am interested in the line only as it relates to Bridget Kane Lavelle’s connection to my Moran/Kane ancestors. I have not researched the line outside of the Wilkes-Barre area. I posted the obituary because it gave such detailed information that I thought someone might find some connection but I do not have much information on this line. John and Bridget Kane Lavelle were the parents of the children noted in my first post. If I find any more facts about Lavelle ancestry, I will post them here. Good luck in your searches.

Lavelle Obit; Hudson, Luzerne County PA

I am researching the family of Mary Kane Moran. I believe that her sister was Bridget Kane Lavelle. In the process, I found this obituary which has excellent survivor information. Census data 1900 - 1920 indicates consistently that members this family immigrated from Ireland/England in 1884. I hope someone can use the information.

Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, June 14, 1909
Killed Returning from His Work
John Lavelle, aged 60 years, of Hudson, while returning home from work on Saturday evening was run down and killed by a Central freight train. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. John Brown and Mrs. Ed. Whittle, of London England; Patrick and Michael, of Chicago; Walter and John, of Denver. Col.; Thomas and Richard and Mrs. Kather Lawler; also by Miss Annie and William Lawler, grandchildren, who made their home with the deceased. The funeral will take place from his home on Stark street, Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. A requiem mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Plains. Interment in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

I'm searching for Thomas Lavelle born abt 1864. We believe he was born in Rawtenstall, Lancashire, England. Unsure if he had any siblings. He married Mary Anne Prendergast maybe abt 1887. He had 2 children, Mary Agnes Lavelle born abt 1889 & John Lavelle born abt 1890 who did as a young child. Thomas Lavelle came to the united states maybe abt 1890, he was to call on his family I guess after finding work/home, and never did. Any one who can give my family any help would be great! Thanks so much

From what you've written I can confirm. I can also add that John, who initially moved to SF then returned to Mayo following an accident was a VERY large man.

William Lavelle, son of Michael Lavelle and Annie Cawley confirmed that Annie's maiden name was Cawley. However it is often confused with Coyle because of Michael Lavelle's sister, Annie Lavelle who married John Coyle therefore becomming Annie Coyle.

Francis T. Lavelle had two daughters. My mother (Margaret)was oldest and Frances her younger sister. Frances and her counsin Jane A. both (1928-1946) were killed in a terrible car crash that killed 9 people. They are buried together with the family of Michael J. at St. Mary's of Mount Carmel
Cemetary in Dunmore. MY mother told me the accident destroyed her parents. Her father died broken hearted in less than a year(1947). The accident was on Nov. 3, 1946. On Nov. 3, 1961 my mother gave birth to a Joseph who died the same day. Ironically my mother passed on Nov. 3, 2004.

At the cemetary in Dunmore are the names Caveny (grandmother to the Lavelles) , and O'Donnell's all of whom are related.

There was a chest of info that my mother had that we found upon her passing of old photo's, letters etc from the early years.

There are 5 grandchildren living in the Washington D. C. area of Frank T. Lavelle (he is buried at ST. Mary's in Wilkes Barre).

My name is Dan Ward......My father is (alive but with dementia)from Wilkes Barre and mother lived in Kingston.

djw1952@verizon.net

I hope this is helpful.

Dan

Looking for great grandparents
Margaret (Margret) McClusky b. approx. 1830 in County Fermanagh –d. 1933 in Greeley County Nebraska.
AND Patrick McManus b. approx 1840 in Ireland – d. 1888 in Greeley County Nebraska.
Spelled McMannis in some documents

Looking for great grandmother and her parents my great great grandparents - all born in County Mayo
Anne Teresa Faherty b. in County Mayo (between 1873 - 1887) - d. 1918 in Greeley County, Nebraska
AND great great grand parents Patrick Faherty and wife Winifred LaVelle

Margaret McClusky was 20 years old in 1861, when she sailed from Ireland to New York. When she came to America the Civil War was in progress. She had a sister named Anna who came to America too; I don’t know if they came together. Anna McClsuky, born in County Fermanagh came to the US when she was 20 years, locating in new York Coty. She spent most of her life working as a governess in the home of W.K. Vanderbilt, the New York millionaire. She made 3 trips to Europe with the Vanderbilt family. Anna had come to Greeley [in retirement] to make her home with her sister. Anna McCluskey died of heart disease at the home of her sister Margaret McManus Anna (sometimes written Annie) McClusky (written McClosky in obituary) was 78 years old. There had apparently been eight McClusky siblings. Four brothers and two other sisters – I believe they all remained in Ireland.

Patrick became a naturalized US citizen in 1865.

I believe, Margaret and Patrick were married in New York City. The family moved for a short time to Virginia and then to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where he was a coal miner and worked for the railroad. In the spring of 1877 the family moved to Greeley County, Nebraska. On February 19, 1878, they filed for a homestead claim.

Margaret and Patrick McManus’ children

1. Mary Anne born 1869 in New York. Married Patrick Kearney. They lived in Long Branch NY. She died before her mother died

2. Maggie (Margaret) born 1871 in Virginia – died early -of spleen disease 1904, in Greeley NE. Maggie never married

3.&4 Twins James E and Sarah Born Oct 5, 1876 in Pennsylvania.

James married Anna Teresa Faherty. in 1908.
Sarah married for the first time at age 44 to a Billy McManus – obviously no relation). In 1963 James and Sarah McManus were honored as Nebraska’s Oldest Living Twins.

5. Kitty A. (Catherine) b 1879 in Greeley County Nebraska – died before her mother in 1893.

6. & 7. Hugh and Rose – died in infancy in Pennsylvania

James E McManus and Anna (Faherty) McManus (daughter of Patrick & Winifred LaVelle Faherty)
Patrick Faherty was born in County Mayo in 1842. He made many trips back to Ireland. Afer the birth of twins, Patrick & John, his (first) wife died. In May 1872 Patrick Faherty married Winifred LaVelle in County Mayo. They had 8 children: Mary, Bridget, Anna, Thomas, Anthony, Austin, and Peter. In 1893 Patrick LaVelle brought his family from Ireland directly to Greeley County, Nebraska.

James and Anne McManus’ children

1.Patrick b. 1910, who in 1932 married Elaine Burke from Greeley County

2. Mary b. 1912, who married Oren Wood of Greeley County

3.Edward b. 1914

4.James b. 1918 d. 1918 (died with his mother in the flu epidemic)

5.Kate b.1916?, who married Carl Edwards, they made their home in Wyoming

Kate (who after her mother’s death was raised for a time in California by Delia O’Connor and her husband – I assume they were related some how). At some point Sarah moved in with her twin brother to help take care of the children

As stated, the mother Anna died of the flu epidemic in 1918 as did one of her children. Mother and son were buried in the same coffin. Bodies were not allowed in the church [Sacred Heart in O’Connor NE] on account of the epidemic. Anne’s sister Bridget (Faherty) McFadden was also in Greeley NE. Both sisters died in the same flu epidemic. Both were pregnant.)

Any information about Patrick McManus and his wife Margaret Clusky, or Anna Teresa Faherty and her parents Patrick & Winifred LaVelle Faherty would be appreciated.

Debbie

debbie.jacobsen@dcsdk12.org
