Bernard Arthur Lawhead 1904-1968

Bernard was born in Lawrence Twp., Clearfield County, PA. Sometime after 1920 he went to California (maybe military & then settled in CA). He married Violet as reflected in Polk's City Directory for Eureka, CA 1949-1950. He was a carpenter by trade.

Then in July 1960 according to the Oakland Tribune & Hayward, CA newspapers he married Caroline Skalet of Castro Valley.

Did Bernard have children? Who was Violet? Who was Caroline married to first? Any help appreciated.

Claire

His father, Allen Lawhead, also from Ohio; his father,
John Lawhead came from Scotland. I'd like to find information on John Lawhead from Scotland.
Betty, A message came through as if you had responded to me but I see it is Lisa but here are a few things I know. Otherwise, right now I have no Leonard, Manerva or Adeline in any family tree. Have you considered his first name may have been different.

What I found in my literature: 1850 census there was a Leonard Lawhead in Miami County Spring Creek Twp, in the 1880 census Leonard Lawhead farmer age 65 & Elisabeth wife age 65 same county & twp, then I do not know what year a reference to a Adaline Lawhead who died 11 March 1930 in Shelby County Oh married to John Hughes.

Probably not much help but an Elisha Laughead (Lawhead)
bought property in Guernsey ohio from Samuel Glover. Vol. O, p. 401, acres 20, section 15, township 8, range 8. -1840.
A susannah laughead married a John D. Glover in Guersney county on March 2, 1840. John D. Glover and Susanah moved to Greene county, Indiana around 1856. In 1851 a portion of Guernsey county was taken to make Noble county, ohio. So you will find records in both counties. Several Lawheads in Guernsey county married Meighen's. Check out meighen site Descendants of John Meighen and Christena Wattters found on geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8270/articles/JohnMeighen2.htm?200522

I just recently discovered that James and Temperance were the parents of my George W. Lawhead. There were 5 children of James Lawhead and Temperance Gilson (married January 20, 1840 in Morrow County Ohio): James (birth about 1846), George W. (birth Feb 10, 1842), Margaret (birth about 1843), Susannah (birth about 1843) and Cynthia (birth unknown).

James Lawhead (the father) died in 1846. Temperance re-married a Charles Conlon and had two children by him (Charles G. - birth about 1850 and Robert - birth about 1851). Temperance then died in 1851.

Susannah married Robert E. Meeker in 1860 in Morrow County Ohio. While Cynthia married Elias Marshall in 1856 in Muskingum County Ohio. Margaret and George went to Michigan and lived for a short time with a Reuben Lawhead (possible brother to James).

Is this any relation to the above?

James Lawhead & Temperance Gilson family

James Lawhead was born about 1821. Temperance Gilson was born about November 30, 1823. They were married on January 20, 1840 in Marion County, Ohio. Their children include: George W (birth Feb 10, 1842), James (birth about 1846), Margaret A. (birth about 1843), Susannah (birth about 1843 - twin?) and Cynthia A. (birth unknown). James (the father) died July 19, 1846. Temperance re-married a Charles Conlon and had 2 children with him before dieing September 20, 1851.

George W. and Margaret are found with a Reuben Lawhead in the 1860 Michigan Census. Reuben MAY be a brother to James as his age in the census indicates his birth about 1821.

In 1850, James and Susannah are found with their mother, Temperance and "step-father" Charles Conlon in Morrow County, Ohio. So far, the other three children have remained elusive for 1850.

Margaret married 4 times in Michigan - Joseph Henry Boyer, David Dutcher, Edmond Taylor and John Wollpert.

George W. also married 4 times in Michigan - Mary King, Emma Mae Stiles, Helen Vorst and Henrietta Langs.

Susannah married Robert E. Meeker on November 15, 1860 in Morrow County Ohio. I believe they then moved Prairie Township, Mahaska County, Iowa by 1870.

Cynthia married Elias Marshall on November 2, 1856 in Muskingum County Ohio where they were living in the 1860 census before moving to around Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee by 1870.

I am looking for any descendants of these families - or for any information on James' and Temperance's parents.

I do not have much info but that sounds familiar. Back in 1987 I had a gentleman do some research at the Clearfield County PA Hist.Soc. He said he spent all day on my request to find info on Nathan Lawhead. One item was that the surname may have been Loughead originally. Another item was that in the Lancaster County History he found a notation that surveys were made between Octorara Creek and Penn's Manor between 1730 and 1750, a Robert Loughead took up one of these tracts in 1754.

Somewhere I have another note he sent me about the Rev John Cuthbertson and I think it was about a Robert Laughead being an elder in the church. (Cannot find that right now)

He did write that in the DAR Records there are two Lougheads in the Revolution: William Loughead 1733-1799 wife Martha Jane and David Loughead, 1755-6/29/1824 wife Mildred Mitchell. Contact me personally so we can compare notes.

Matthew, Please contact me about what you found with these families. Joseph shown in the 1850 Guernsey county, Ohio census is Joseph Lawhead b. 1816 in Pennsylvania and married to Cassandra Harden. I have there family information. I am trying to establish the relationships to the other Lawheads in Guernsey county in 1850 as well as to John Lawhead listed in the Greene county, Indiana census of 1860. The make-up of the families in the 1850 census and the 1860 census looks like multiple families living together due to someone's death or something like that. I haven't found that Samuel from the 1850 record after that. Please contact me when you can. Thanks for any help. Jeff Armstrong

This is a branch of my family. The names that are listed are of four siblings; their mother died in childbirth in 1886 with her 10th child. Their father, Benjamin Lawhead, of Clarion Co., put his four youngest children in the Soldier's Orphanage, and as they came of age, they were released. He gave the 10th child, Barney Lawhead, for adoption. Benjamin married his 2nd wife in 1888 and gave her two daughters who were born before the last two children, his only daughters from his first marriage, were released from the orphanage.
