I have an obit from the New York Times edition of 3/23/1892 that states that John Lawrence, aged 87 years (b.~1805), was a Civil War veteran of the 29th NJ Infantry. (He may have also been a member of the 35th NJ Infantry in his second enlistment).

If this is to be believed, he would have been ~57 years old when he enlisted in 1862!

Can anyone verify this obit as true and also tell me where this man is interred?

Bob

I've recently become the owner of a document
that dates from the Revolutionary War. It's
dated March 2, 1782, and is a reimursement
voucher for money spent on war supplies for
the Continental Army. The teasurer of the "Pay
Table Office", is listed as "John Lawrence, Esq."
The isn't a locality or military unit listed
on the note. If anyone has information to share
regarding this person, I would be very interested.

I am confused by the marriages of William Lawrence. I have the possibility of 4 different marriages:
Elizabeth Gildersleeve
Elizabeth Smith
Elizabeth Scudder
Hannah Townsend
William mentions "wife Elizabeth" in his will (no help whatsoever). Elizabeth Smith went on to marry Philip Carteret & Richard Townsley.
I am descended from William's son James Lawrence. He married Mehetable Scudder, daughter of Elizabeth Scudder.
Can anyone help with marriage dates? Which one was James mother? (I assume it was not Elizabeth Scudder).
Any help would be appreciated.

Amos C. LAWRENCE son of Thomas LAWRENCE and Phoebe Phebe P. CLARK

Title: Past and present of the city of Lansing and Ingham county, Michigan, by Albert E. Cowles, historically. Together with biographical sketches of many of its leading and prominent citizens and illustrious dead ...
Author: Cowles, Albert Eugene, 1838-1906.
Publication Info: Lansing, Mich.,: The Michigan historical publishing association, [1905?] Pages 186, 187

Amos LAWRENCE
The history of the early settlement, growth and development of the Township of Bunker Hill would not be complete without a record of the activities of Amos Lawrence. He was born in the City of New York, March 17, I830, the son of Thomas and Phoebe (Clark) Lawrence, the father a native of New Jersey and the mother of New York. The father was a carpenter and learned his trade in the City of Philadelphia. This he followed during the earlier years of his life, in several eastern cities. He emigrated to Michigan in 1832 with his family and settled in the Village of Dexter, where he followed his trade. The family consisted of three sons and one daughter, our subject being the eldest. The other members of the family are: Samuel, born in Dexter, September I, I834, died August, I894; John, born at Dexter, Michigan, January 2, I837, now resides in California and Mary, born in Jackson, Michigan, April I, 1839, died July 31, I868. Amos Lawrence received his early education at Jackson, and later attended school at Dexter. At the early age of nine years, he was put to work with a farmer, for which he received the princely sum of fifty cents per week, however, the occupation being to his liking, and feeling himself adapted to the work, he kept at it for several years. One of the most important events in the life of our subject occurred April 25, 1852, when he was united in marriage to Miss Julia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jason Walter of Dexter, who was born in Washtenaw county, April 25, 1834. By dint of economy he had laid by his earnings until he had a sufficient amount to warrant the purchase of a farm. He therefore bought eighty acres of land in the Township of Bunker Hill, and to this he added from time to time, until he now owns a fine farm of two hundred and twelve acres with good substantial buildings. He has been recognized as one of the leading men of the township for many years. Public-spirited and enthusiastic in any enterprise in which he engages, genial and of a social temperament, Mr. Lawrence numbers his friends by his acquaintances. His fund of pioneer reminiscences is practically inexhaustible. When he moved into his new possession the place was practically in a primitive state. He moved into an unfinished log house and began the improvements, which today rank well with any in the township. Mr. Lawrence, a few years since retired from the farm, taking up his residence at Fitchburg, only a short distance, however, from his old home. His son, Vernon, is in full charge of the farm. Mr. Lawrence has been a great collector of curios and Indian relics. He has one of the finest private collections in the State, valued at several hundred dollars. The deer park, which he has maintained upon his farm for several years, is always a great attraction to the public. In early boyhood Mr. Lawrence became attached to his dog and gun, and during the earlier days of his married life, he supplied his family and the neighbors with fresh venison and other wild game by the use of his trusty rifle, and during the intervening years, every season, he takes a few days off and enjoys a hunt. It was no unusual thing for him to come in late at night with a deer across his shoulders. Mr. Lawrence recalls having seen the first gang of prisoners brought to Jackson upon the completion of the State prison; there were eight, and they came in a wagon from Detroit. He was present and saw the first locomotive on the Michigan Central that entered the City of Jackson; it ran on wooden rails from Michigan Center to the city. He well remembers when the law was passed and the government moved the Indians out of the State. Mr. Lawrence had many personal friends among the Indians and used to deal among them. To Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence have been born three children: Alice Marie, December 26, 1853, now the wife of Menzo Conklin, a farmer residing on section thirty-six, Bunker Hill township, and they have had three children, one only living: Eugene, May 20, I863, married Miss Belle Havens. He is the proprietor of a general store at Fitchburg and is a successful business man; Vernon, born July 23, I869, married Mary Mackinder and has three children, while Eugene is the father of two children. In politics Mr. Lawrence is a conservative Democrat. He has for many years been an active member of the Grange, advocating in every way its principles. He is also a member of the I. O. O. F., Stockbridge Lodge No. 40. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence, though not members of the M. E. church, are liberal supporters of the society. Having a comfortable competence for his declining years and living in the enjoyment of the consciousness of having lived a life of good citizenship and uprightness Mr. Lawrence is looking toward the "setting of the sun" with a goodly hope of the life beyond.

1880 Census Place Alaiedon, Ingham, Michigan
Family History Library Film 1254582
NA Film Number T9-0582
Page Number 267D

Amos LAWRENCE Self M Male W 50 <1830> NY Farmer NJ NY
Julia LAWRENCE Wife M Female W 46 <1834> MI Keeping House MA MA
Alice LAWRENCE Dau S Female W 26 <1854> MI NY MI
Eugene LAWRENCE Son S Male W 17<1863> MI Works On Farm NY MI
Vernon LAWRENCE Son S Male W 10 <1870> MI Attending School NY MI
Thomas LAWRENCE Father W Male W 76 <1804> NJ Retired Carpenter NJ NJ

NOTE; Living near by:
John LAWRENCE Self M Male W 43 <1837> MI Farmer NJ NY
Anna LAWRENCE Other M Female W 32 <1848> MI Keeping House NY NY
Mary LAWRENCE Other S Female W 2 <1878> MI MI MI

Find A Grave website:
Amos C Lawrence
Birth: 1830
Death: 1925
Burial: Fitchburg Cemetery
Stockbridge, Ingham Co., Michigan, USA
Record added: Sep 8 2007
By: Deb Hayes-Wolfe
Pictures of gravestone included

J. P. Lawrence deserts his family

Appears in "The Ravia Herald" 15 August 1908, Ravia, Johnston County, Oklahoma

JOHNSTON COUNTY FARMER DESERTS WIFE

A Johnston County farmer has gotten himself into a bad bit of trouble with the courts, but that is not the worst. He has humiliated his wife to a degree that if justice were meted out to him he would be more severely punished than the statutes require as a penalty for the offence with which he is charged. J. P. Lawrence and his wife have been living on a farm near Earl, in Johnston County. They have both worked hard and accumulated some savings. The woman, who is not in good health, had done the washing, sewing and at times made a hand in the field. Lawrence it seems saw greener pastures further west and decided to move. While he was looking for a location his wife sent to her brother’s in the state of Arkansas. Lawrence proceeded to dispose of what he had and purchased a good team, wagon and a moving outfit and had $300 left. He came to Ardmore en route for the west, stopped in a wagon yard and when the Rock Island arrived last night it brought with it a woman. The woman too had with her a trunk. She and Lawrence at once went to his wagon.

The woman, who gave her name as Meadows and also as Ernest, had been living with the Lawrence family and the neighbors had suspected that wrong existed and a close watchout for the movements of the pair was kept. When the woman came she was shadowed by officers and after the couple had gotten together last night Lawrence was placed under arrest by officers Warthing and Wright of Johnston County and Banks King of this city. The man was placed in the lockup here until this morning when he was taken to his own county.

The woman stated that she was en route to visit her people near here in the country and Lawrence was merely taking her to the home of relatives. Ardmore Ardmoreite
Lawrence - Chase - Towneley Estate 1870-s - 1920

I am looking for information about the various claims that were put forth by descendants of Mary Towneley and John Lawrence. Family Associations were formed in the mid and late 1800's - and as late as 1920 in various places in the United States and Canada. These organizations were incorporated and consolidated in order to gather funds to hire lawyers and take their claims back to England. At stake were estates in Lancashire, the Ashton Hall in Lancaster and Towneley Hall in Burnley. Other claims have also identified Corby Castle. One such case - was heard in the House of Lords in April 1890 the case of Lawrence Vs Lord Norreys and others. The American claimants of the Lawrences were represented by Col Joseph Fraser Jacquess. This was an appeal of the original case which was heard June 17, 1887 in the Queen's Bench Division before Lord Chief Justice and Mr Justice Day. The result of this appeal was that the case was thrown out of court and in 1894, Col Jacquess was in court proceedings defending the charges of fraud in the case.

I am looking for any further information about any of these associations of descendants, any of the cases, in fact anything about these cases, at all.

Lawrence Family of Ohio and Kansas

I am interested in any information available about the Isaac and Nancy Karr Lawrence family and their descendants. They were married in Guernsey County, Ohio, on April 26, 1838, and were listed in the 1850 census for that county. Isaac is shown as age 40 in the 1850 census and died February 7, 1884. Nancy was born May 27, 1812 and died July 3, 1891. This census also shows a Peter Lawrence (age 47) and his family living on the adjacent farm.

A family tree indicates Isaac and Nancy had the following children: Margaret (married a Pickering); Nancy (married a Blackwood and had three children - Lyda, Clyde and Walter Karr); Mary Jane (born in 1850 and died 1910, married a Thomas Hughes); William; Robert K. Lawrence (died 1928, age 75 years and had one child - H. C. Lawrence).

Supposedly this family moved to Kansas sometime after the 1850 census, but have been unable to locate any information in any available Kansas census (and they don't appear in any subsequent Ohio census). I have an old unidentified picture (appears to be 1880-1900 time frame) of a man taken in Burlington, Kansas. Since I've been unable to identify any other family members in this area of Kansas, I'm inclined to think this must be one of the Lawrence family, but can't find them in the Burlington or Coffey County area.

Any information or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for info on my gggrandmother, Myra Jane Monroe Lawrence Nunley. She was born in 1875 in Franklin Co. AL. When she was 29 she married my GGgrandfather in Tishomingo County, MS. I'm assuming that since she had what looks like a "Monroe" surname and then a "Lawrence" surname, and that she didn't marry my ggg until she was 29, she must have been married before.

Also, I THINK her parents were Samuel and Missouria, but am not sure.

That's all I know about her. If anyone can fill in the gaps, I'd love to hear from you!

Links to Thomas Henry and James Lawrence arrived Australia 1884

Brothers Thomas Henry and James Lawrence arrived in Australia on the "Warwick" in 1884. James was listed as 23, born in Dublin and Thomas as 21 born in Gloucester. They came out on assisted passages as orphans, probably bought up in a workhouse, possibly in the Cotswold. Their parents are listed on marriage certificates as Thomas a soldier and either Elizabeth or Jane Stephens. They may have had an older sister Bessie (Elizabeth?). They have an enormous ranges of descendants in Australia but the lack of birthdates, the fact that the father was a soldier who was possibly in India for a long period the connection with Ireland and the common nature of their names has made research difficult

I am seeking any information I can find about Jane Lawrence who married Caleb Hyatt Tompkins, nephew of Vice President Daniel D. She was b. 1824 d. ?? m. ?? According to the 1850 Census, they were living in White Plains, Westchester, NY with three children: Deborah, Elias and Robert. Then they drop off the census. Caleb reappears in 1880, living with daughter Deborah and husband D. Tompkins Craft in Harrison, Westchester, NY. Besides the three mentioned, they had several children one of whom is reputed to be my GGrandfather John Lawrence Tompkins. (This info came from another researcher with no sources but right city, right dates, Lawrence name etc.) This has been my brick wall for three years. Any illumination would be appreciated.

My grandmother, Fannie Lawrence, was their daughter. She married Ed Lawrence of the Sardis Community in Lyon Co., KY. My mother remembered visiting them in Mo. in 1920-21. She also remembered them returning for her mother's funeral in 1925.

Lawrence - Clerkenwell, Islington & St Pancras

The spelling of the surname varies between documents, I also have records of LaUrence and LawrAnce for the same person. I have recently come across the middle name of "Rugendyke" (on later documents changed to Richard). The period I am looking at is 1850 - 1900 ish, the area is Middlesex which was later taken into London. A common thread that runs through the family is taking the maiden name of the mother forward as one of the forenames for the offspring (eg "Morris" becomes "Maurice"). Has anyone else come across the name "Rugendyke" in their research?
