I am researching the Laws family for a friend who was the daughter of William Lee Laws, born 1903 in Lawrence County, TN. His father was William Lee, who died before Wm. was born. Can you tell me about which Law family this is? My friend thinks Ben & Mabel Thornberry were close relatives as her father used to stay with them... Mabel was a "Laws." Would appreciate any help you can give regarding this family. William Lee Laws was married to Tennessee "Tennie" Hayes.

Jesse Martin Laws is my great great grandfather. I have very little information on him. I have asked my grandma and she says that all he ever told her about his past was that he and his older sister ran away from an Indian reservation when he was a boy. He was orphaned very young but the census that would include him with his parents would be the one that was destroyed by fire, so finding his parents has been very difficult. His sister went by Mattie. She is buried in Mitchell Cemetery in Greenway Arkansas, and so is Jesse and Emma. His son Raliegh was my great grandfather and his oldest daughter Dorothy is my grandma. I was very young when Raliegh died, but I barely remember him. I have a copy of Jesse's death certificate. He died in the State hospital in Little Rock. I also have copies his WWI draft card. I would love more information if you find out anything more.

Hi Don. I apologize for misspelling "Swain." I am Jack Van Fossen's daughter. My Grandma, Bessie Lena Laws Van Fossen, was your Dad's sister. I've been trying to put together the Laws family tree for some time now (with the help of John Laws). If you have any information, I would love to exchange with you. My primary interest is trying to track down the family line before John Melton Laws. I know his father's name was William but know very little else beyond that. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Beth Van Fossen Lias
Beavercreek, Ohio

Joel Laws ??? (Lewis) b1946 Craven County, North Carolina

Does anyone know any Laws in New Bern or Craven County? I am looking for my husbands half brother and I think his middle name is actually a family surname. In the 1950's, my mother in law remembers John Laws in New Bern who was a state trooper, but it appears he may have passed away.

His birth name is Joel Laws Lewis, but due to a divorce, it is possible his mother remarried and had his last name changed. His mother is Betty (or Elizabeth) and she was a school teacher. It is also probably that Betty took Joel and moved out West in the late 1940's. If you have any information or know Joel, please reply. Thank you!

You stated that you are working on the Simms family ancestry. I have hit a brick wall with my husband's g-g-grandmother.

In the NC Marriage Book she is listed as Jynsey Ann Sims, born May 2, 1807 in Orange Co. NC married to Hiram Laws, born Nov. 17, 1803 in Orange Co. NC. They are both buried in Seller's Cemetery where all of my husband's ancestors are buried. She is listed as Jency Ann Sims on the tombstone. According to the book they were married in Orange Co. Feb. 20, 1827 in Orange Co., NC by James P. Laws.

This is the line that we have partly known a long time & beyond George Laws, Sr. we have just recently found out.

John Laws, b. 1650 in Billingham, England; m. Katherine Bosman, b. Northhampton, VA June 13, 1671 in Somerset Co. MD. He died in 1699 in Somerset, MD.

George Laws, b. 1689 in Somerset Co., MD; m. Elizabeth Mulkey; he died Dec. 1718 in Somerset, MD.

George Laws, Sr. b. bet. 1810 & 1815 in Somerset, MD; m. Mary Ann Mulkey; d. 1800 in Orange Co., NC. We have a Revolutionary War Pension Application listing Mary Mulkey as his widow.

George Laws, Jr. b. 1750; m.(1) Susannah Staggs (2) Sarah Carpenter; died in 1815 in Orange Co. NC.
He & Sarah Carpenter were the parents of Hiram Laws who married Jynsey (Jency) Ann Sims.

Their first son is named Dudley Sims Laws.

The only Sims I can find in Orange Co. at that time is a Herbert Sims who owned a mill. She isn't listed as one of his children. I know a Sims family where the Dudley name has been passed down.

I would like any information you have & will be glad to furnish any you might want.
Thank you,
Marilyn

We are familiar with the Watcher's website. We have a picture of Minerva. Jynsey's name seems to be spelled several different ways. Are you descended from Guilford Dudley Sims? I thought maybe she might be a daughter but his children don't match. My husband, Laws Rushing, is related either by blood or by marriage to most of the families on the Watchers. They all lived in and around Clarksburg, TN in Carroll Co. His parents & ancestors are buried in Sellers & we plan to be buried there. He grew up in the old Laws family homeplace joining the cemetery.

I am curious about the David Laws and Martha Mitchell you mention. I agree with the list of children you have. I am convinced about David Jr., James, and John but I have not been able to document William. I believe William was a son of David and I have him moving to Ste Genevieve county Missouri after 1840. Unfortunately William died in 1850, appearantly before the census was completed. I have a probate listing his children and one listing James's children. I have theorized that William lived with his parents and so did not show up on census data by name. William is buried at the Chestnut Ridge Cemetery on what would have been the plank road from Ste Genevieve to Farmington in Ste Francois county. If you can document William to David I would be very grateful.

Doug Laws

Betty,
We have corresponded before and I have some information I think you would find interesting. I received probate copies from Ste Genevieve Co. from Bea Laws some time ago on William and James Laws and finally sat down and transcribed them. They contain the lists of children for each of them. If you want them I can email them to you.
Barbara, Look at my possible senario under David Laws. I have been researching since 2000 and this is what I have come up with. I am trying to find prove or disprove it. Tell me what you think or offer some more input or information. I am the ggdaughter of Aaron Cornelius (Nel/Neely) Laws son of William Coleman Laws and Mary Miller of Mitchell County, NC. Family oral history seems to point in this direction. -Robin

Is Viney Laws name Melvina (Vina/Viney) Laws? If so her parents were William Coleman Laws and Mary Miller. You will find them listed in 1880 Mitchell County Census. I have been researching their ancestors and I have a possible scenario listed under the Laws message boards. I am not 100% sure it is correct. Just check it out. I am ggdaughter of Aaron Cornelius (Neely) Laws of Avery County, NC.

I have not found a tie to the Orange County Laws family. My line is confirmed back to 1800 in Yancy County, NC back to Meshack Laws. I am looking for ties to my Yancy County family in other counties. I think they will connect, I just have to find the parents of Meshack to get to the other Laws families in NC.

Re: David Laws in NC

Betty,
Thank you for your message. I am looking for the father of William C. (Coleman) Laws born 1812. He was married to Mary Miller. I was told by family members that he was the son of David Laws. I have researched in the US Census and found a David PR Laws and his listing of male children and their ages fits. There were two other David Laws mentioned in census. One born in 1796 (?; don't have info in front of me). All his children were born much later. I believe the PR stands for the lineage of Laws' from Pig River, Virginia. A John Laws moved to NC from Pig River and his son was David Sr. and I believe David PR is David Sr's son. Haven't found proof yet, that is why I am seeking other researchers help. You mentioned a William Laws married to a Jane who was the son of David Laws Sr. Do you have any further info on him that might point to my William Laws? Thanks for responding and am looking forward to hearing from you! Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Robin
