Re: Andreas (Andrew) Lawyer b. circa 1782

Andreas Lawyer is notoriously difficult to trace back further. No one has made a connection yet that is documented. Some assumptions have been made that he was the son of one of the Johanis/Johannes Lawyers, but there is no real documentation. We have to assume that his parents - for the time being - are unidentifiable.

Andreas is my great-great-great grandfather.

Frederick and Catherine Lawyer Ohio to Illinois about 1854

I am hoping someone might connect to this Frederick and Catherine Lawyer family said to be from Germany that migrated from the Wilmot, Sugar Creek, Stark County Ohio ( Tuscarawas and Holmes Co., OH are included)to Whiteside County Illinois area with the following famlies; John Wetzel/Margaret Reece, Isaac Stull Swearingen Jr/Hannah Martin, George Hurless (Harless)/Susannah Lucy Leatherman, Overholser (Overholtz), Winters and Malone. Possable this family may have been Mennonite or German Reformed Church.
Some of the children of Frederick and Catherine Lawyer are listed below in a Whiteside County Bios for Louis Wetzel.
Not listed is Mary Lawyer's siblings Elizabeth and possable Sarah and Nicholas. They may have remained in Ohio or gone to other States like Indiana.
1, Jacob Lawyer born 1834 Ohio married about 1855 to Leah Unknown (my G-G-Grandparents), lived in Harrison, Polk, Tama and Carrol Counties Iowa.
1880 Lincoln TWP, Harrison County Iowa census.
Jacob LAWYER Self M Male W 46 OH Farming GERMANY GERMANY
Leah LAWYER Wife M Female W 40 OH Keeping House OH PA
Wm. Biggs, Webster TWP, Hamilton CO., Iowa.

The following Bio may be in error as there appear to be NO famlies that came directy from Germany with the Surname Lawyer. More likely this family came from PA.

Whiteside County ILL Biographies
LEWIS WETZELL
Portrait & Biographical History of Whiteside Co 1885

"Lewis Wetzel, a farmer, section 17, Hopkins Township, is a son of John and Margaret (Reese) Wetzel, who were natives of Franklin Co., Pa., of German and English descent. He died Sept. 18, 1860, and she Feb. 2, 1882. They had a family of 12 children, namely; Catherine, Daniel, Jacob, John, George, Elizabeth, David, Andrew, Hannah, Joseph, Margaret and Lewis.
Lawyer family of Monmouth Co.,NJ desc.

Looking for desc. of Lawyer family of Monmouth Co. esp. family of Millstone twp/Clarksburg area; UFT.
There is strong poss. Joseph Lawyer was m. to Rebecca Stewart and parents of Catherine Lawyer1830-1886 and her known brother Louis 1827-1907.
Catherine was second wife to William Pullen 1812-1890 of Millstone twp.
There is no definite proof that this Joseph is the same who m. Rebecca Stewart. In 1850 census, Joseph was 69yr and the right age--he is listed with Catherine and Louis. This would be right since Rebecca Stewart Lawyer died in 1849.
After Catherine's married to Wm Pullen, her step daughter, Anna Maria, married Alfred J. Lawyer in 1861. This must be in same family but cannot find connection.
Also looking for desc. of Alfred's children: William G. Lawyer and Frank C. Lawyer.
May contact me directly at bev.pam@verizon.net

Doris,

When was your Rebecca Lawyer born?
I am researching Joseph Lawyer in Monmouth
and Burlington Co. So far I haven't been able
to connect my Lawyer's with your or Beverly's.
However,I recently found a Joseph Lawyer on
the 1860 Census in Monmouth Co. It lists
Joseph Lawyer b. abt 1829 married to Mary
b. abt 1821. It also lists 4 children:
Lydia b. 1845, Debra b. 1849, Joseph b. 1856 and
Rebeca b. 1858. I am pretty sure that this is my line
because my Joseph Lawyer was born in 1857 and his parents
were Joseph and Mary.
I was wondering if the Rebeca you are looking for could be
his sister? Let me know what you think. Mandy

I'm looking for information about:

Stacy Lawyer b. abt 1765 d. aft 1850
I found him in the 1850 Census- Monroe Twp., Middlesex Co., NJ. Stacy Lawyer, age 85, b. NJ. Pauper

It's believed that Stacy Lawyer may be the son of Michael Lawyer/ Layer and Elizabeth Dove and brother of John and William Lawyer.

Stacy's son, Joseph is my GGG-grandfather:
Joseph Lawyer, Sr. b. abt 1789 in NJ d. abt 1864 in Monmouth Co, NJ married Rebecca Stewart in 1812 and Mary (Parker) Matthews in 1853.
His marriage record shows Parents: Stacey & Ann Lawyer

It's also believed that Stacy children may include, Asa, George and Elizabeth Lawyer

Do you have any information about Stacy Lawyer b. 1765?

What information do you have about Michael Lawyer children (John, Micheal, Nancy, William, James, and Joseph?

I know John married Mary ? and moved to Guernsey Co., Ohio

I think William may have married Mary Luckmiers in 1799?

Please let me know if you can help.
Thank you!
Stacy Lawyer b. 1765 NJ

My line goes like this...

Stacy Lawyer b. abt 1765 in NJ md Ann ?
(obtained from son's marriage return)

Joseph Lawyer b. abt 1789 Burlington Co., NJ d. abt 1864 md Mary Mathis/Matthews 9/18/1853. Butcher

Joseph Lawyer b. 1857 in Monmouth Co., NJ md Margaret Atkinson. Farmer

John Henry Lawyer b. 1886 in Burlington Co, NJ md Ada Carter. Farmer

Harry Allen Lawyer b. 1919 in Burlington Co, NJ md Dorothy Brickner. Truck Driver

My father is one of Harry and Dorothy's 7 children.

Recently I looked up a marriage return for a Joseph Lawyer married to Mary Mathis in Burlington Co., NJ. This was a
long shot since my Joseph Lawyer married a Mary Matthews but the time period was right so I gave it a shot.
Mary Matthew was married once before and her maiden name was Parker. I was so happy when I saw the marriage notice. Joseph Lawyer age 64 (parents Stacy & Ann Lawyer) married to Mary Mathis age 36 (parents Richard Parker & wife). It was the right person someone had just spelled Matthews wrong. And now at long last I know who Joseph's parents are.

I believe that Jospeh Lawyer died abt 1864 in Monmouth Co., NJ. On 8/27/1858. He is listed as a witness to Richard Parker's will (Mary Lawyer is listed one of Richard's children). On 3/11/1864 Mary Lawyer of Monmouth County signed a Inventory and Appraisment for Joseph Lawyer deceased.

***The weird thing is that I found Joseph and Mary Lawyer listed in the 1860 Monmouth Co., Cenus and Joseph is only age 31 instead of age 71??? I'm sure it's the correct person because also living in the household are 2 of Mary children (Lydia and Debra Matthews) from her previous marriage to Lewis Matthews. No wonder I could never locate him, I was looking for a person 40 years younger.

Isn't Funny how things have been right in front of you all along but you just need that on e little thing to make the connection.

Please let me know if this sounds familiar.
Mandy

Re: John Lawyer

Hi! I have looked for John J. Lawyer but I had no luck. I beleive we are looking for the same person but my dates are a little different. I do have James in Kinsman, Ohio. I believe he is buried at the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Church Rd. Kinsman, Ohio? His father, John was buried at State line Cemetary, West Shenango Twp., Crawford Co., PA. My understanding is that John came from Germany through Trenton, New Jersey but all records were burned in a fire. I have not found much other than this. I am decendant of William Henry Lawyer, brother of James.
Thanks,
Dave
