You misunderstood...her last name is Mercer and her mother was the daughter of Anna Sylvester Davidson. I believe Sabrina Mercer and her mother are in Real Estate in Adams CO somewhere. It has been so long. Anna Sylvester Davidson's parents, Joseph & Samantha Angeline Laymon Sylvester are interred in a cemetery in Monroe, OH (Butler CO). That is where the name of Laymon comes into play. I am actually looking for the background of Samantha Angeline Laymon Sylvester, who was my gr-grandmother. I have old pictures of her. Anyone out there know anything? We have reason to believe the family was located in Adams, Clinton or other SE Ohio counties somewhere.

Hi Nan,

Much to my surprise when I checked the Laymon forum today I found a letter that you had posted written by my mother!!!!

Yes, Fred and Winifred Laymon are my parents and Edwin Laymon is my elder brother. Letha Laymon (actually Lepha) was my Aunt (Fred's sister). The Laymon family lived in Atwater, CA for a few years in the early 1920s and that is when your mother and Lepha must have met. Lepha died in 1999 after living a good long and active life - she lived in CA all her life and was married 2 X first to Frank Hamon and later to Henry Nicklas. She lived in various parts of CA including San Francisco, Covalo, Ukiah, Tracy and Petaluma.

All for now, Steve Laymon

Hi all, esp. Jim!
Am desperately trying to find the family of my Gr-Grandmother, Samantha Angeline Laymon Sylvester. I have pictures ,etc. As far as I know, she came to Monroe, Ohio, & had her first chil by 1877. We think her religion was Presbyterian, but not sure!! Have lots of other info. Please contactme @ my E-mail: Randjb@juno.com
Lightening badly here--have to get off for now.
Please get back to me as I also have figured out a few siblings. We think she came from Clinton Co., Clermont Co. or even Brown Co., Ohio.
Jan Beedle Franklin, Ohio 45005

Hi Steve!
I just wrote you a lengthy mess. & both times it was deleted. I have so much to give to you about the descendants of Samantha (Angeline) Sylvester, my gr-grandmother & just spent a long time putting it in a mess. box for you, so I think I'd rather send it via my e-mail. Please get back to me right away, as I have names, dates, locations of Samantha's graves & her husband & children's. I also have pictures of her, as well as the location of her gravesite. My Mother had a great memory & was fairly accurate about stories & descriptions of them. I am so tickled to hear from you about Samantha & am pretty sure it's the right one. My sister, June Thomas Davis, found her on an 1860 census at the age of 13 as the daughter of William & Ann Laymon in Clinton Co.
I'm going to the new Clinton Co. Hist. Soc. Library' Rombach Place in Wilmington with the Warren Co. Gen. Soc. on Wed., Aug. 21, from 1-4 PM to see if I can find anything else. We thought they could have been Quaker, Amish, or even Mennonite????
Please get back to me on my personal e-mail ASAP & I'll forward all my notes, etc.
Thank you so much!
Jan Beedle
97 Beam Drive
Franklin, Ohio 45005
e-mail: RANDJB@JUNO.COM
937-746-0052
Steve:
Thank you for letting me know that you had found the message. I thought it was important for future researchers because one can figure out his exact date of birth (by her remarks using the date on the letter) plus his parents names.

Nan Colburn Wolf
Fred,Winifred & Edwin Laymon

My mother had a friend from her younger days named Letha Laymon. I never met her but I remember hearing that name mentioned at family gatheringS. I don't know if they were friends when my mother, Marie (Hinds) Colburn, was growing up in Atwater, CA or became friends at a later date when my mother was living in Mariposa, PA as a young bride (married 1930) or after 1936 when my mother & father moved to Plymouth, CA and lived there the rest of their lives. I am guessing that the note below is from Letha's brother & wife but just guessing as I don't know if Laymon was Letha's maiden or married name.
In going through my parents estate papers I have found a thank you note for a baby present from Fred and Winifred Laymon, 2699 15th Ave., San Francisco, Calif. It also mentions Edwin's birthdate as "four weeks old last night". It was addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Colburn, Plymouth, California:
"May 9, 1938
Dear friends,
The lovely little gift of spoon and fork for young Edwin came a long time ago. It surely was appreciated by us and will be greatly enjoyed by Edwin in a very short time. We were surprised to receive it as we certainly hadn't expected anything. He has received many lovely and useful little garments, but this is his only spoon and fork, so we'll treasure it. Edwin is a fine little boy and we do so enjoy caring for him. He was four weeks old last night, and he is growing and progressing beautifully, and is very strong and active and vigorous,.
We hope to get some pictures of him before long, so that we'll have a record of him as a young baby.
Thank you again for your loving thought of sending our baby a present.
Sincerely your friends...
Fred and Winifred Laymon"
Note that their return address was:
F. Laymon
2699 - 15th Ave.
San Francisco, Calif.

Elmer Hershel Laymon (b Jun 1894) was the son of William McCormick Laymon (b Sep 1867, IN) and Amelia Chambers (b Mar 1871 IN). I have his line back 6 generations. Since Elmer's wife Elizabeth was born in KY it is likely that they were married there. I would be interested in any descendents that you know of.

Steve
