Hmmm, I think you are confused about who I am. My mother was born in 1934, so she would not appear on any available census records. My grandfather, for whom I have found a WWI draft registration card, had NOTHING to do with Ontario. He's buried in the Haven Hill Cemetary east of Olney, as a matter of fact, in May, 2007 I walked across his grave and his wife's as we buried my uncle next to him. There are a large number of 'relatives' right in that particular part of the cemetary and it's getting packed. He's buried next to his son Steve, who is immediately to the left of Grandpa.

He was ineligible to be drafted in WW1 because he had a wife and small child at home. Hugh Leaf, the last child by Thomas Perry Leaf's second wife, was his companion when they were small and they did some hunting together when he was older. (I've puked on Hugh's carpet up here in the Chicago area. I was 3 at the time and don't remember it myself, but I've been told about it. That would have been around 1960.)

I still need to call Barbara.

Thank you so much for the information you have sent me. I has helped fill in some holes on Estella May and her families. I don't have a great deal of information to share with you though. Roger came down through Thomas Perry Ellis, the second son of Thomas Evans Ellis and Lydia Ann Mcbride. I have received some stories from Rick Ellis about Sidney Logan amd Thomas Evans that were written by Diana Fuller and in one of them it says that while Thomas P. was going to art school in St. Louis his mother died and shortly after that his father married the illiterate seamstress/housekeeper and Thomas P. never went back home. I am wondering if that is why there just wasn't much handed down. What I do have is a 3x5 card that has the folloing information on it--Estella May Ellis, daughter of Thomas Evans Ellis, married Frank Bartlett--children--Charlotte Bartlett Ream and Elizabeth Bartlett Kromer--married , Leaf--child Lily Leaf Newby. I also have a family history written by Roger's Aunt Lulu that gives the lineage back to John Ellis and Sarah Clapp. Most of is right but some of it is not. I will send you a copy of it. It is easier for me to do that than to type all of it in an e-mail. But it says that Sarah Clapp had a sister Lucretia Clapp, who married Jesse McBride. Phebe Clapp married Jesse and I haven't been able to find that they were sisters. I think that they were cousins. I have 2 birth dates for Sarah and two different lines of parents who originally came down from two brothers. They were Palantine Germans. Sarah might have come down from one and Phebe from the other, OR they might be sisters and the records that I have are not complete. Anyhow, her name wasn't Lucretia. The other discrepency was that Thomas E. had 2 sisters-Sarah Ellis Staley and Ellen Ellis Finch, but I found them in the Illinois Marriage index the other day and the were Lydia Ann's sisters.

I haven't been able to find the marriages of Estella May to Frank Bartlett of Thomas Leaf or her 4th husband Mr. Vietti. I did find her marriage to William R. Arvin and also their separate censuses. I also found another entry in the marriage index for Estella Arvin marrying a John
A Carr 22 Dec 1915 on Clark County, Indiana, Bk 28, page 470. I don't know whether that would be our Estella or not. In the 1910 census Estella said that she was the mother of 6 children and 4 of them were living. I am assuming that 5 of them must have been Frank and Estella's and your grandmother was the 6th child. I have no idea who the other 2 might be. I also have no idea when or where Estella died. I can't remember whether I looked for her as Estella Vietti though? In the stories Rick Ellis sent he mentions a Franklin Ellis Ream and his grand daughter Susan Ream . These must be the descendents of Charlotte.. I will ask him if he has any more information on Charlotte and if the e-mail for Diana Fullmer is recent and I will contact her, too. I will send you copies of these stories also. In one of the stories she is talking about Sidney Logan's children and she says, "Their second and last son, William, (Willie) was born three years later at Minden, Nebraska. February 19, 1898. He was born in a city about ten miles from Kearney where Sydney's father and his second wife lived. It is hard to beleive that they went there because of him though because Sydney's sister amd her husband Franklin Bartlett lived in a dugout near Minden at that time. I wonder if he was born at their homestead." So Estella and Frank lived at Minden in 1898. I wonder if that is where the two missing children might be? I also wondered why Henry was living with his grandfather, and why he was in prison. I think I found him in the 1920 census but not in the 1930 census, I found the following information on his WW1 Registration Card. His full name is Henry Evans Bartlett. He was born in Kearney, Nebraska on February 4, 1890. He was working for a farmer in Kearney, was single, was tall and slender, had dark brown eyes and black hair. He registered in June of 1917. Is your Mother's name Ilean A? I never could tell exactly what it was on the census, and which Ontario did your Grandfather die? And is White Hill Cemetery in Olney? Do you have anymore information on Elizabeth. Waht her husbands\'s name was and any children, etc. I tried looking for her, but there were several Elizabeth Kromers born in the same state about the same time but I didn't have enough information to decide anything. I don't know of a Lulu Ellis who married a Moore. I am looking at the McBride information that I have and researching to see what I can Find on them. Jesse and Phebe were married in Knox County, Tennesseein 1826. I have the marriage record for them. They were in Putnam County, Indiana for the 1830 census with 3 children. I may hav had 11 or 12 children. I still have to figure that out. Jesse was born in Virginia so I am going to try and figure out if there are any of the same men in Virginia, Tennessee, and Indiana that could be the father of Jesse.

I would love to have any information on Thomas Evans and Lydia Ann that you have. Many years ago, when I was a "greenie" genealogist I tried to research Roger's dad's line and got so frustrated that I switched to his mom's line which was much easier. I just started to look at his dad's line again a few weeks ago. There are so many more records available and the internet, and to find descendents on the lines, who are willing to share what the have. I just wish I had a little bit more information to share with eveybody. My e-mail is wegotit@sti.net. If you could send me your adress I can send you some of the information that I have. Very Sincerely. Claire Ellis

Other than Hugh Leaf, I don't know that much about Thomas's decendants. I'm decended from George Washington Leaf through his last child Harry Leaf, through Harry's one surviving son Raymond Russell, and Raymond's last daughter Mary. I'm a guy, I don't have a husband (or a wife for that matter.) I'm 50 years old.

The person you probably need to talk to is Aunt Barbara. She's one of the last relatives surviving that knows all these things. (Mom passed on in 2004.) I'll probably try to call her tonight and relay some of that information.

Did you know we're probably both related to the Leafs who founded the Leaf Candy Company here in Chicago? Barbara says they're my fifth cousins.

Did you find the land bounty certificate on Ancestry.com yet? That's how Thomas and George's father got the land in Anderson Twp in Hamilton County. Their grandfather, about which I can find precious little, died in the War of 1812. Although they had lived in Hamilton County prior to that, as did Andrew.

I don't have any information on the Bartletts at all, except I went to school with a Charlie Bartlett when I went to East Richland Junior High in Olney 1969-1971. I was rejected as an outsider then, since my mom had married one of those EVIL Chicago boys. People shunned us while we lived there. Not Barbara and Minnie and most of the other relatives, of course, but a lot of the townsfolk thought they were BETTER than us because we were cityfolk. I guess they were afraid we'd drive by their house and shoot them up with our Tommy gun?

It took me years after that to find the fact that through Ray's wife Cora Margret Taylor, I'm related to a fellow that was Mayor 1880-1884 by the name of John Kuster. And his wife, Mary Peebles, has a line that goes all the way back to England and John of Gaunt.

Re: Estella May Ellis

I so appreciate hearing from you. Thomas Perry Leaf was born Oct. 25, 1834 in Hamilton Co., Ohio. He went to Richland Co., Ill. in 1855, shortly after his older brother, George, did the same. A biography is online in the Richland County history of 1888 (Year?). He was married twice before marrying Estella Ellis. I have searched in Richland and all the surrounding counties and can't find their marriage. I believe they were probably married in 1901, as my grandmother, Lily Leaf, was born April 15, 1902, in Olney. Thomas Leaf was 67 at the time and Estella was 35 (born Sept 27,1866 in Olney). The marriage is not in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index, and they are listed separately in the 1900 census. I have requested newspapers from 1901 to search there for some sort of marriage announcement. Thomas Leaf died May 5, 1909 in Olney. He is buried in Haven Hill cemetery in Olney. Sometime after Thomas died, my grandmother, Lily, was sent to boarding school...not sure where, maybe around Vincennes, Indiana. Estella married again in 1913 in Vincennes...to a William Arvin. I believe they subsequently divorced, as they are listed separately in the 1920 census for Indianapolis. Lily Leaf married Leonard Newby on October 30, 1921 in Indianapolis. My mother was their only child. She is still alive and 86 years old. Leonard Newby died on May 10, 1953 in Ontario. My grandmother, Lily, died June 21, 1981 in Denver. I would appreciate any information you have on the Bartlett family. I recently discovered Estella's marriage to Bartlett. The White Hill cemetery information for him lists him as James Franklin Bartlett. did he go by Frank? Do you know where and when they were married? I suspected it might be in Nebraska and searched Buffalo and Kearney counties, but found no Bartlett-Ellis marriage there. I also discovered their son Henry. Do you know why he was living with his Ellis grandfather in 1900 and not with either parent? Why was he in the Neb. State Penitentiary in 1910? Do you know what became of him? The last info. I have for him is the 1920 census. I knew of Elizabeth Bartlett. Of my grandmother's 12-13 half siblings, she was only very close to Elizabeth who was about 6 years older than my grandmother. We have always called her Aunt Elizabeth. My grandmother visited her in Portland, Oregon a couple of times when I was young. Do you know where she was born? The 1900 census says Illinois, but there is no birth record in Richland Co. Who is the other daughter of Estella and Frank? Do you know of Lulu Ellis who married a Moore and had land in Greene Co.,Arkansas? Finally, the biggest mystery I have about Estella is where and when she died. She visited my mother's family (Lily, Leonard and my mother) in Indianapolis in the early 1930's. My mother thinks Estella died not too long after that visit. She has no idea where Estella was living at the time or where or when she died. I have more information on Thomas Leaf and Estella's parents, Thomas Evans Ellis and Lydia Ann McBride if you are interested. I'd be interested in other information you have on the Ellis/McBride lines. Who is you husband descended from?
Thanks so much for your help! Gina Moore

Thomas Leaf would be my great-great-grandfather's brother. He died supposedly in 1919 and was born in 1834 in Ohio. He was father to Dr Hugh Leaf, my grandfathers' first cousin once removed and his favorite companion. I have almost NO records of Thomas, other than from the 1884 history of Richland county. I know he married at least twice. Once in 1858 to Mary E Colvin, and once in 1869 to Nancy Bates. Nancy Bates is Hugh's mother.

That's all I know. He is mentioned in Preston Township in the 1884 history, right below his older brother George Washington Leaf. Supposedly Dr Hugh dug all of this stuff out before he died in the 1960's but it disappeared after he died, having no offspring, and I'm having to dig it up all over again.

Charles
Leaf family Sweden to Des Moines, IA photos

I have some old photos of the Leaf family taken at a Des Moines, Iowa studio. The photos are (somewhat) identified at Clara, August and Emil Leaf and possibly their parents.

The Leaf family was related (cousins?) to Maria Berglund Peterson Carlson. Maria was a native of Falun, Kopparberg, Sweden. Maria's first husband John F. Peterson was a coal miner at Oswalt, Iowa.

Following John's death, Maria married Alfred Carlson. Maria and Alfred lived at Des Moines, Iowa before moving to Minnesota.

I would like to compare notes with anyone who connects to this particular family. ritamwp@yahoo.comXYZXYZ

Leaf's of Wortley,Leeds,Yorkshire, England

My Leaf's were found on the 1881 census at No.91 Wallace St., Wortley. The family consisted of George,Selina, his wife, and their children Mary, Emily, Herbert, William and Annie. Emily married Samuel Longley and had 5 children, among them my mother, Emma. Others children were George,Joseph, Arthur Lily. Emma and Arthur emigrated to the U.S., Lily to Victoria, B.C., and George and Joseph stayed in Leeds til their deaths. Possibly some of these people were your ancestors? Let me know if any of this sounds familiar.

Found the bounty online under War of 1812 land warrants, Anderson Twp, Hamilton Co., Ohio.

So Lily would be contemporary with Myra and slightly younger than my grandfather.

Did you know during the Depression, there were times Grandad and Hugh would take a day off to go hunting? When Hugh found out Grandad actually took days off work for it, he paid him back in 1955. Took him up to the dealership that he owned in the Chicago area, and told him to pick a car. ANY car. He pointed at this brand-new loaded 4-door top-of-the-line DeSoto, and said he wanted one like that. Well, Hugh gave him THAT one right off the showroom floor. He was still driving it when I was a small child. We used to play with the rim-wind dash clock until it drove Grandad crazy. I wish I knew which dealership. It was up here in the Chicago area, I know that much.

http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbi...

Charles

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Sorry for the delay in reponding. My grandmother, Lily Leaf, was a half-sibling of Hugh. She was the only child of Thomas Leaf's third and last marriage, at age 67-68, to Estella May Ellis. My grandmother was born in 1902, so she had many half-siblings who were MUCH older and who she probably never met. According to my mother, though, she did talk about Hugh.
Where did you find the 1851 bounty land warrant? I'd like to see this, but I'm having trouble finding a reference or index on line.

Leaf/ritter

I have not ignored your request. I know I have seen Thomas Ritter in my research but can't find where. I have Thomas Butler for sure. I think I saw Thomas Ritter with a Henry Leaf probate record but still looking for it again. These are sometimes hard to read as you know. What other Leef/Leaf names are you doing? Do you have a John or Jacob involved? Have you seen the surnames Bell, Butler Campbell, Daniel, Wright, or Taylor?

Leaf in Maryland

I have now tracked my ancestry to a John Leaf and Rachel Campbell of Baltimore Maryland. There are a number of Henry Leaf's connected to him. One is a son and another may be a brother. John and Rachel were married in Baltimore in 1781. Children included a Henry, Jacob, Catherine, Rebecca, Rachel, Elizabeth, Mary and Johnzee. Female children married into surnames Butler, Wright, King, Bell. I am checking now to see potential connections to John and Ann or Henry and Nancy Tipton. As well as possibly to Francis Leaffe migrating to US from England around 1690's according to pasenger lists.

Are there any connections you will share from your research? Not being located in Md. my resources are few and I hope to find a couple connections that will confirm some links. I use all the online resources but have exhausted them as well as local library data available.
Thank you for your reply.

John Leaf

I have been browsing again today. My ancestry includes a John Leef born in Md. abt 1810. The name has been spelled both as Leaf and Leef. He moved to Ohio, Franklin Co. I also found a Henry Leaf/Leef living in Franklin Co. about the same time. Not sure of relationships. Census has John with wife Sarah and with children John, Harrison, Leroy, Lorraine and Nioda (not sure of spelling)
There are two Leroys at times. One Leroy W. and one Leroy S.
Do you see any connections?
the spelling changes occur at diferent times depending on looking at census, or sity directory or death records.
