Thanks for the message.

I did some research into a number of GIs when I was researching part of my tree. Amongst other things, I gather that Robert Leakey was one of the first casualties of D Day - this website shows that he is still honoured in England:

http://www.faaa.me.uk/Madingley%202006.htm

If you do not already have information on this family's history I may have some more if you would like me to dig out the files.

Regards

Catherine

Just found it and am corresponding with the page owner. It seems to cover most everything up to the time that John Leakey went to Texas.

Thanks for that. I gather the author was his grandson, hence "My Grandad and I"? I found quite a bit on the net, including the two books, one by him and one by his grandson, the cowboy (in Montana?). But what I'm really after is his ancestry, and whether he's related to the UK English Leakey family I belong to. Were there Leakeys who went across from here as part of the Pilgrim Father band, who were his ancestors? Or was it much later? Any ideas? Many thanks. Chris

John Leakey came to Texas in 1847, and he was considered one of the first white settlers in Frio Canyon in 1853. The town of Leakey, Texas was established in 1883 and was named in his honor. He was a successful business man, Indian fighter, and Pioneer. Several markers are located on the courthouse grounds to commemorate the history of Leakey and its founders, John and Nance Leakey.

http://www.forttours.com/pages/hmreal.asp
http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/story?oid=oid%... (this article is pretty good along with a picture of Granddaddy Leakey, He was very tall for the time, over 6 feet)
Hope this gives you a better idea of what he was like, supposedly the Indians were in awe of him because they couldn't kill him! Just do a Google search "John Leakey" Leakey, TX and see what pops up, he had a son named John Leakey who was a prominet cowboy (truly!) who was a co-author of a book about his life as a cowboy, I imagine that is the book the original poster has.

Levi Leakey/Lakey

Levi was one of ten children of William Leakey and Elizabeth Bray. The others were: Joshua; Jeremiah, married to Anna Chamness abt 1778 and died in Warren County, TN; Elizabeth, married to Jonathan Jones; John, born 1756, married Hannah Luttrell in 1781 and died 24 August 1840 in Rutherford County, TN; Sarah; Charity; Ann, married William Henderson 15 October 1767 and died after 1827; William, born 1763 and married Elizabeth Scott about 1781 and died after 1840 in Knox County, TN; Eli; and your Levi. Were Eli and Levi twins? I have probable birth years as 1765 for both. William is my ancestor. Levi died 1808 and Susanna never remarried. In 1819 she sold all her possessions and migrated to Henry County, IN. She and her son Levi traveled overland stopping in OH for two years and arrived in Indiana 22 March 1822 where they bought quite a lot of land. She died in Henry County at her son Levi's home 06 April 1846. Her stone is in the Leakey-Wisehart Cemetery on Dublin Pike, two miles NW of New Lisbon, IN, according to Gilbert M Lakey and Keith G. Lakey. The Leakeys were strong Quakers and are mentioned often in the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy by W. W. Hinshaw. Levi's brothers John and William were "dismissed" from the local Quaker congregatiom for marrying out of the faith and for taking up arms in the Revolutionary War. These two became Baptists in Tennessee. I have much more on Levi Leakey's father, William, and his grandfather William

My Eli and Levi were born in 1765 in Orange County, North Carolina to Quakers William and Elizabeth Bray Leakey (also spelled Leake, Lakey in land transactions). The history of Eli is unknown to me; Levi married Susannah Routh and died in Knox County, Tennessee about 1808. This information came to me in 1986 from Kenneth Lakey of Quincy, IL. William and Elizabeth had 10 children and died in Surry County, NC, now called Yadkin County. I have more on their ancestors if you want it.
