Lear /Flood family

Hi! I am trying to find more information on my Lear/flood family. My grandmother was bridget( nee flood) and her parents were James flood and mary(nee lear).Mary's parents were george lear and catherine (nee sheradon)I know george and catherine were married in 1882 in stockton but can get no further! We were always led to believe that the lear's were travelling people originating possibly from the yorkshire/lancashire areas or beyond and that they often travelled to the likes of appleby fair e.t.c. I think perhaps george's family settled in stockton/darlington area before coming to sunderland (southwick area).I hope someone is able to help ! Thanks.

Karen,

Your Nathan M(elich) Lear was the daughter of Fanny Lear of Culpeper Co., VA. Fanny was referred to as "my sister" in the Will of Lavina Lear, an unmarried daughter of John and Jemima Lear. See http://azstrong.tripod.com/jd_letha/legacy/2194.htm. Taken literally, that would indicate Nathan's mother was a Lear, but not his father. It's possible, however, that Fanny was instead Lavina's sister-in-law and a widow of an unknown brother. DNA testing of a direct male descendant of Nathan would resolve this issue. The modal yDNA haplotype of the Culpeper Co. Lears has been established at the Lear-Lohr-Lair DNA Project. See http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/lear/. I hope you can recruit a representative of your line for our project.

At the end of your post, you note the oft repeated lineage tracing the Culpeper Co., VA Lears back to Col. John Lear of Nansemond Co., VA. Based upon my research, I believe this purported lineage to be false. See http://azstrong.tripod.com/jd_letha/legacy/2166.htm.

Robert Strong

Hi, Mark McvClure.
We have corresponded before at about the time that you first married. My husband Charles Edward Lear is also a descendant of Jesse Lear though Robert and Sophia Lear, then George Mason Lear and Katy Giles Lear, then George Walter Lear and Bessie Griggs Lear, I would like for you to know that Charles passed away on March 21, 2009 in Rome, GA where he lived most of his life. He had been in poor health for several years but still had his wonderful outgoing personality that is a Lear characteristic. He was 85.

You may read about our family at www.findagrave.com, Oakland Cemetery, Floyd Cty, Rome, GA.

Donna,

Your John W. Lear is a puzzle. I really have no insight as to why he carried the Lear name, for he seems to be Lucinda's son and he seems to have been born after her marriage to Harvey Pierce in 1830.

I think you might benefit from participating in the Lear DNA Project. See http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/lear/. The haplotype for your Lear line has already been established. If a male Lear of your immediate family were to be tested and match this haplotype, then you could theorize John W. Lear may have been an orphaned nephew, who was taken into Lucinda's household and treated as a son. If your Lear line does not match the haplotype, then that would seem to point to John W. Lear being a son of Lucinda who was perhaps born before she married Harvey Pierce. In that event, you may find a convincing match with another surname, which may lead you to his biological father.

Family Tree DNA just launched a summer promotion until the end of August. The recommended 37 marker test is being offered at $119, instead of the usual $189. Do you have a living male Lear in your immediate family that you could recruit for testing?

Possibly married December 4, 1828 in Garrard Co., KY according to the LDS website. (By 1857 he is remarried to an Eliza Thornton) There are no children listed in the household of Claiborn & Susan, so it is hard to say if they even had children. But it is also a good sign that Claiborne Lear (b: 1828) is their son and was possibly named after his father. I did not find him in the 1850 census. Claiborn and Eliza (Thornton) Lear had one son, John F. Lear (b: abt. 1858) They are found in 1860, 1870 & 1880 Garrard Co., KY census.

A posting on Ancestry.com states Claiborn Lear's parents were David Lear (1767 - VA) & Lucy Duval (1767 - VA) Lucy Duval's mother was Lucy Claiborne which is probably where the name came from.

David Lear's parents are listed as James Lear (1725 - VA) & Hannah Darnell (1725 - VA)

James Lear's parents are listed as John Lear (1710 - VA) & Elizabeth Havield (1709 - VA)

John Lear's parents are listed as Thomas Lear (1666 - VA) & Elizabeth Bridger (1648 - VA)

I hope this info helps...................Karen

Re: LEAR'S IN KENTUCKY

Hi Toni,

Woods Walker Lear was born Mar 26, 1919 in Garrard County Kentucky. He died Nov. 4, 1944 on Leyte Island in the Philipines.

He was the son of Joseph Cephas Lear and Minnie Tankersley. Joseph C. Lear born June 10, 1878 in Rockcastle County and died Sept. 2, 1959 in Garrard County. He married Minnie around 1897. They had 13 kids: Henry, Hazel, Thomas, Frances, Moses, Ida, Annie, Pearl, Jesse, Woods Walker, Joe, Flossy, and Chiant. Minnie was born in May 1881 and died March 26, 1964 in Garrard County.

Joseph Cephas Lear was the son of John Wesley Pierce Lear who was born about 1837 in Lincoln County. John died between 1878 and 1880 in Rockcastle County. About 1861 he married Viole Murray who was born in Rockcastle County in December 1841 and died October 30, 1918 in Garrard County. The couple had nine children that I am aware of: James, William Frank, Henry, Granville, Sarah, Emma, Richard, Ellen, and Joseph Cephas.

John Wesley Pierce Lear was the son of Harvey Pierce and his wife Lucinda Lear who was a daughter of Jesse Lear of Rockcastle County. Harvey Pierce died sometime before 1850 when John Wesley was a boy. His mother, a young widow at the time, sent John Wesley Pierce to live with and be raised by his grandfather Jesse Lear and his wife Elizabeth. Having lived with his grandfather for so long, at some point he took on the Lear surname and became John Wesley Lear, though on the paternal line he was a Pierce. His mother Lucinda Lear Pierce married John Kirkendoll. Lucinda died in 1881 in Garrard County, Kentucky.
The one remaining uncle I have I do not have any contact with and do not know where he lives. So I reached a deadend. But, at least I know Lucinda Lear Pearce claimed John W.
Reading all the reply posts to this message, I wonder if I may have the correct George W. Lear in my family: George W. 1852-1932) married Mary F. (b.1861, no maiden name). George had 16 surviving children listed in his obit at the time of his death, in Mayfield, KY: Annie, Chester, Clarles, Delbert, Dewey, Edgar, Elsie, Elmore. Sula, Gerald, Harry, Lockridge, Lucean (my great great grandfather), Oressa, Paul, and Phillip. I note one child, Jerell, who apparently died before his father. I am working through extensive pictures, letters, etc.; you may contact me directly via mtheroux176@jdmt.net if this appears to fit.

Charles W. Lear was also MY great uncle: Charles' brother Lucean was my great grandfather. I am working through hundreds of family photos, letters, etc. So far, I have nothing on Charles' military history, but have images to share of he and his wife Myrtle, and various communciations between the 16+ children of his father George W. and mother Mary F. It also appears from birth dates that Charles had a twin, Chester Lear, also b.1887.
I am untangling family relationships for a branch of the Lear family based around Mayfield, KY, starting with George W. Lear (1852-1932), m. Mary F. (don't know Mary's mainden name). Lucean was one of 16 children alive at the time of George's death. My grandmother Georgia Lear was a daughter of Lucean and his wife Mamie. Many of the family blood line are still alive. You may contact me directly at mtheroux176@jdmt.net.

From George W. Lear's obit (and other information): Elsie was one of 16 surviving children when her father George W. Lear (born 1852) died 5-19-1932 at 82 years Graves County, Mayfield, KY. George's wife: Mary F., born 1861 (don't have her family name yet). In addition to Elsie: Annie (b1898), Chester (married Willie McAlister, two children, Constance and Ralph), Charles (married Myrtie), Delbert (b1891, married Gae), Dewey (b1900), Edgar, Elmore, Eula (b1890), Gerald, Harry (b1892), Lockridge (b1901), Lucean, Oressa (1903-1977), Paul W. (b1893, daughter Anna Louise married John Hauseman), Phillip (b1890), and Jerell (b 1905, apparently not alive in 1932). I note two husbands for Elsie: Albert Edward Williams (married in 1921), and Ray Bennett married to Elsie in 1932 at the time of George's death, don't know if that is correct. I am slowly working through a hoard of Lear family photos, letters and clippings.

Military Info Required - Charles Henry Lear b: 1887, Stretford, Manchester

I have been researching my Great Uncle Charles Henry Lear and have found that he enlisted to the H Cable Section of Royal Engineers on 21st September 1914 and was also part of 15th Signal Coy, he left for France on 8th July 1915 and returned in June 1919. His paperwork says that he was a Driver - does anyone know what this would have involved

His service number was 52716.

Looking through his records, he was awarded the Medailla d'honneur avec Glaives en Bronze and it also has a note which says "London Gazette 17.3.20". I was hoping that someone could help shed some light on this medal - what is it? I can only find limited information and can't find for what reason he would have been awarded this. Would there have been a note regarding it in the London Gazette?
