Lisa

In my findings along the way the trades the Learmonth families followed were very much passed down the lines.

Farmers/Fleshers/Tanners/Agricultural Labourers/Ploughmen

Grocers/Bakers/Publishing

Wheelwright/Joiners/Mason/Land Developers

Miners

Foundry workers and in one case Foundry Owner in Manchester.

My great Aunt Margaret Learmonth born Larbert 30.03.1868 was married to a John Gartley born Dunotter 18.03.1866 who was a Baker Hawick around 1920 according to my Aunt/Edinburgh 1901 census. This line has been troublesome and finding them, they moved after 1920? to West Coast Scotland? to run a B&B and by family folk lore later bought an island in the West Coast Scotland which I have never found or proven so the trail went cold after 1920. They had three children I know about according to Census.

Alistair

Hi Alistair,

I descend from the Learmonths that migrated to Northern England, my Grandmother Jessie Pettie Learmonth(1924)and all her siblings were born in Gateshead, I myself was born in Newcastle.
You mentioned that an Aunt of yours had a bakery in Hawick, maybe its not connected but my GG Grandfather Alexander Mair Learmonth(1863)and his brother Andrew White Learmonth (1865)were both bakers although they had already migrated by 1891 they were both born in Galashiels which is not too far from Hawick.

John

The Lord Provost (John Learmonth) was a carriage maker to trade his father was John Learmonth who married Elizabeth Young, John jnr the provost had one son I know about a Colonel Andrew Learmonth if my memory serves me and bought 140 acres in Dean to build houses after his father built the bridge with his own money so the Learmonth terraces naming etc built on the land his father owned and needed the bridge to get too.

I have not heard from anyone who can trace direct to John or his son, he may have left the capital of course and set up somewhere else, I have never seen this line show up though in my research. The provost had a lot of bad press and was not very popular and his demise was assured so was not re-elected. But this could be down to his riches gained by building the bridge of course. Envy is a terrible thing.

As for Thomas the Rhymer I do not even consider him Learmonth unless you have research that out dates anything I have researched and that would nearer the 12th Century. All links to him being Learmonth date from this period of 1800-1900 and everyone believing Sir Walter Scott tales. The facts do not support Walter in his version at all. But Walter never let the truth get in the way of selling his books. Read how Walter got his version about Thomas.

Alistair

Lisa

I have not done any research in to this branch as the person mentioned previous (Ken) has more info right back to his ealiest link he found on the Islands.

I for my own line do not connect to the Orkney lines (as far as I am aware) though some did come south to Edinburgh, as mentioned earlier it seems though I have not come across (John) connection previous. The Glasgow link usually comes back to my family lines that is why I got interested.

I can also rule my research out for Roxburgh/Berwickshire as they seem linked also to Northern England migration as they moved South (work). Not to say I do not have any English links but they are more Manchester location.

I did have a Aunt move to Hawick to run a Bakers but all others are more Lothians/Fife/Lanarkshire/Central Scotland so I could not be much assitance unless you throw up a link to any research I have done through names.

Alistair

Thanks Alistair, best I can do for now is pencil those in as parents, and see what the future brings with research. Florentia's parents I had decided the same thing. Knowing the area is a huge advantage you have over me! I find this family absolutely fascinating.

Thank you for looking. Those are the only two children I've been able to find too. The other kind helper asked about his death, which I also have not been able to find. He's a bit of a mystery man right now. However I did find this online if you are interested:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~beli/learmonth/will...

We at least know from that that he died before Florentia, and therefore before 1842.

I believe so, yes. Something had to move her from Linlithgow to Lanark. It is logical that it was the first marriage, and the subsequent one took place in 1846. Unless of course there were two Jane Learmonths born 1823 in Linlithgow and I have the wrong one.

Hi I seen your post, and am sure you have the information of this family from the census's. Alexanders father was Peter as you say, here he is in 1951...

1851 Scotland Census 1851 Scotland Census
Name: Peter Learmonth
Age: 34
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1817
Relationship: Head
Spouse's Name: Jane
Gender: Male
Where born: Prestonkirk, Haddingtonshire
Parish Number: 711
Civil Parish: Innerwick
Town: Thornton Mill
County: East Lothian
Address: Thornton Mill
Occupation: Miller
ED: 2
Page: 14 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 47
Line: 1
Roll: CSSCT1851_192
Household Members: Name Age
James Cowe 17
Andrew Learmonth 3
Christian Learmonth 1
Jane Learmonth 27
Margaret Learmonth 1
Peter Learmonth 34
Robert Learmonth 5
Ann Watt 14
Source Citation: Parish: Innerwick; ED: 2; Line: 1; Year: 1851.

My question is do you have a parent for your Peter?
Reason being is I have a James Learmonth b. 1814 Prestonkirk, Haddingtonshire m. Anne Young and am trying to figure out who his parent was. My James childrens names were-from oldest to youngest-
Robert
Margaret
Adam
James
Mary
Elizabeth
Anne
Alexander
Jane
Catherine

With the naming conventions the Scottish had it would seem that your Peter and my James were brothers (some of the same childrens names and oldest being Robert)and I was wondering what you might have for the higher ups to see if there is a match.

Thanks,
Cheryl Derby

The Russian Reunion was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
Australian Learmonths have invited the Lermontovs to Australia in February to an Australian Learmonth - Lermontov Family Surname Reunion.
We have invited every person in Australian with the surname Learmonth and descendants of that name to attend the Reunion.
We need some help and our first Question is does anyone have any Early History on John Learmonth b:July 1783 in Edinburgh? d:6th July 1823 in Edinburgh.
Peter and James Learmonth were indeed brothers. They had five brothers and two sisters. Their parents were Robert Learmonth and Margaret Watt who were married on 26/11/1796 at Prestonkirk. Robert Learmonth's parents were Alexander Learmond and Elizabeth Dewar who were married on 6/11/1768 at Haddington. That is as far back as I have been able to go. Robert Learmonth was one of the most prominent farmers of his day in East Lothian. He farmed at Fortune Bank, Prestonkirk. He has a prominent gravestone in Prestonkirk Churchyard. He claimed relationship to James Learmonth, the Covenanter, hanged in Edinburgh in 1678.
Regards
Will Mackay

More info gleaned about Thomas the Rhymer and not written after 1803 either.

The facts derive from what was written for the Lord of Isle concerning trade and events or persons involved with him.

Thomas and his son were common vistors as they were actively involved in horse trading. They bought and sold horses by day and in the evenings gave readings of tales, poems, etc it must have supplied him an in road to trade having two skills to trade off. This was also mixed with the prophecies we often read about. They were never mentioned as Learmonth and the two people are one and the same as both did it, father and son- so tales of him could be blurred. It would explain why they are found all over Scotland the horse trading part, they would need a reason to venture North-South-West & East. If they had noble birth even being illigitamate they would have used it, the Lord of Isle background was not much different. Prestige was the thing with the Northern Scots of the time and Thomas would have used all he had to talk himself up to enter trade or make deals. But he never called himself Learmonth- footnote Horse Trading was a Tinker or Gypsy trade to be involved, this could be a another origin of Thomas and may answer his Prophecy part of his character.

Why Sir Walter selected Learmonth as their name is more the question. Most reports I have read using this surname date after Sir Walter and any historic notes nearer the time of Thomas never did.

Sir Walter needed money at the time and was nearing banruptcy and his prolific writing to aid him in being solvent would not stop at the truth. A story or a good story takes sometimes fiddling with truth to make fit. But to use this as a statement of fact is different.

As for the Janet Dairsie never found her or her family in any land deeds or sasines. I never found the family involved in Fife politics which is very strange, I think this is figment of Sir walter imagination to make events suit his story. The Castle of Dairsie was bought along with the Land by David Learmonth of Clatto in 1520 (a Tanner/Farmer/Provost of St Andrews twice) by trade who did rather well out of the leather trade exporting it through ports from St Andrews and Crail. Clatto is just over the hill South of Dairsie 2 or 3 miles at most more if you go by the road.

Sir Walter Scott I would put in the same realms as Nigel Tranter, but to use as factual from both their writings is a huge error. But read for yourself the historic evidence it is easily gleaned from The Scottish Library or such.

Please read where Sir Walter gleaned his facts from and conclude from that.

Was their a person called Thomas the Rhymer, all probability their was or someone of the ilk, was he called Learmonth (no facts)but he could have been or his wife was.

Did his son marry into Fife through Janet Dairsie, fiction by Sir Walter not factual. The Learmonth did not arrive in St Andrews to a Century later (Fact)

Did Thomas the Rhymer die being kept by the diocese of Glasgow after his granting his lands to Sulta (fact)

Did Thomas meet with William Wallace, yes according to one report of the times.

As for Fairies and the rest of the tales you can make up your own mind, I am very sceptical

The biggest problem is sorting out the marriages and it seems the high death rates experienced with the wifes marrying into these families.

The closest I have for a father and mother for this Alexander is Alexander Learmonth and Janet Anderson giving him a birth of about July 1766 in Polmont Stirlingshire, Scotland. If correct??? its anyones guess until better facts appear.

As for Florentia I have here parents as William Robertson and Margaret Fullarton, this seems to match the first child naming and gives Florentia a birth date off 7 Feb 1763 Bo'ness, West Lothian, Scotland.

To aid Polmont and Bo'ness and Linlithgow are all very close proximity and the Learmonth families seem to have moved and farmed all inbetween these areas, Torphichen is South of Linlithgow and near Bathgate, Muiravonside is between Polmont and Linlithgow. Not a great deal of distance between them at all.

regards

Alistair
