Yes, I am interested! Especially those from branch of our tree who are not documented in Learned Family books. I am also very interested in those who served during the Revolutionary War. Some day, I would like to update our family book.

My Sylvanus was not born until 1793 and died in May 1853. His father, Abijah served in the Revolutionary War, he was born in 1760 and died in January of 1844. Abijah was named for his father who was chosen a member of the first Revolutionary legislature, convened in New Hampshire, and on his return from its session he became ill and died in Feb of 1776.

My Abijah enlisted in June or July, 1775 for six months under Capt. Jermiah Eams, whose company was then stationed at Northumberland, Grafton County, New Hampshire; served out his term helping to build a fort at Northumberland, and occasionally going out on scouting parties.

In May, 1776 he enlisted in same company for six more months; help to build a fort at Stratford, VT. and in scouting.

In May, 1777, he enlisted at Haverhill, in Continental Service for three years, under Lieut. Florence Crowley, Col. Crane, Massachusetts troops march to Peekskill, N. Y., where they remained two weeks, then to West Point where and in the vicinity, he served out the winter; that he was one of a Sergeant's guard on Constitution Island, part of the time; that in May or June, 1778, he marched to Morristown, N. J., where he remained until November, 1778 when they marched back to Croton's Bridge, and remained there during the winter; that in April or May, 1779 he returned to West Point, where he remained until his time had expired, and he received a written discharge which he has lost.
Source: Daughter's of the American Revolution and the National Archives - W8016.

Thank you for your offer to assist in joining of the SAR/DAR. I would be interested in knowing how to go about this.

Hello!
I am also related to Sylvanus through my maternal Grandmother Laura Learned. Sylvanus had a son George from his first wife Margaret Hicks. George had a son Eugene Harley Learned who had a son John. John was my Grandmother Laura's father! So far I haven't found any pictures of Sylvanus. The only ones I've posted are from his gravesite!

I posted this query twice before with no responses, so going to try again.... and again.

Has anyone found a will for William Learned who d. 1646 in Woburn, Middlesex, Mass. ? I found none mentioned in the books I have previously used. In searching this message board, I see a new updated genealogy on the Learned family has been done, so perhaps there is something new in it re a will? Did he die intestate?

I am descended from his daughter Sarah who married (2nd) Thomas La/Lothrop, one of my 3 lines of La-Lothrop descent.

John McGill was from Canada and they lived in Whitby, Ontario Canada. They were married about 1834-35. They had five children: Elizabeth, George, David, William and John in the 1851 Canadian Census. George and David migrated to the US in the 1860s. I am seeking information about Mary Ann and her parents.

The Sylvanus Learned you mentioned in your e-mail dated Nov. 18, 2005 was born April 16, 1793 in N.H. and died May 30, 1853 probably in Pennsylvania. However, Sylvanus was buried in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. He married for a second time to Lois A. Blood on August 29, 1834 in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. Lois and Sylvanus had Henry Learned and five other children. Lois lived with her son, Henry and his family on the family farm in Erie Co., Pennsylvania.

Henry Learned died in 1880, his wife Charlotte lived until about 1908. They had 3 sons.

Lois A. Blood Learned was born in 1817 and died in 1884. One of her sisters married a nephew of Sylvanus.

Sylvanus Learned had five children with his first wife. I believe she died somewhere between 1830 and 1834. Sylvanus came from the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada about 1833 or 1834. His father, Abijah and mother, Ann Learned were in Ashtabula Co., Ohio at that time, along with his sisters and their families.

The Sylvanus I'm related to was married to Margaret Hicks and died in Monroe Township, Penn. It can get very confusing! Since posting that message I had the chance to visit Sylvanus's grave!
Another set of information to consider:

James B. Inks and wife Nancy Jenette Learned Inks are listed as owning a house in Murphys, CA in an 1876 map of the town. Next door and West of the Inks placet is a house listed as owned by "Mrs. Learned. Next door and West of Mrs Learned is a house listed as owned by "CT Learned".

Could the Mrs. Learned home be owned by Sarah Learned who is listed in the 1880 census in Murphys? Could the home owned by CT Learned by either Clark or Charles Learned?

I'll do some additional checking of census data, but would appreciate your insight

Actual name is Barry Schwoerer.

What I know about the Learned family:
"Nancy" Learned appears in the California 1860 census living with James B. Inks in Vallecito, CA, a small mining town in Calaveras County, CA. She is listed as 18 years old (born 1842). Entry in the Daughters of the Golden West shows Nancy was married to James on 3 May 1859 in Murphys, CA. THis marriage produced my Great Grandmother, Laura Inks Schwoerer. In the 1860 census, Nancy lists her birth state as New York. Nancy and James had several children, but interesting is the fact they had a child named "Saphornia" which maps to Sophronia Maynard, second wife of Josiah Learned. Our records show that Nancy used a middle name Jenette. Daughters of the Golden west show Nancy arrived in CA in 1853, Records show she died 3 April 1885 in Murphys, CA

Does above map to any records you have?

Thanks for the input.

Judge Learned Hand Genealogy

J. Learned Hand

Many thanks for your message. Is there any indication in the book you refer to re Judge Hand's mother's lineage including members of the Holmes family? I am descended from both the Holmes and Hand families and, in fact, met Judge Hand when I was a very small child. I recall being told that he was somehow related to Judge Holmes, through his mother, but cannot find any documentation in family archives to support that. Additionally, I am searching for a gentleman named Ned Hand who was Director of Admissions at Widener Law School when I was accepted there. At the time, I was not pursuing genealogy and never looked into the similarity of names and professions; however, I have since wondered if "Ned" was a nickname for Learned and, if so, if a relationship exists there. Hope you can shed some light on these questions or direct me to the right path. Again, many thanks. Alice

Learned Hand

Dotty - Many thanks for your help re Learned. Was tied up with my job at the 'Atlantique City' antiques show last week and have just been able to review my messages. One of our dealers specializes in out-of-print books and I will have him search for the Learned book you mentioned for me. Somewhere along the line I have come across some info re Judge Holmes's relationship to the Learned Hand group - since it does not appear to be on Lydia's side, perhaps it pertained to Samuel's mother. Also find that, although the Learned group seems to center on New England and New York locations, the names Peck, Noyes and Townsend are very prominent in Southern New Jersey history and Townsend, especially, is tied in with the Hands here. Will also do some research on Coit surname since my great-uncle's first name was Coit and it was considered a "family name." Again, many thanks for your help - as an aside, are you possibly related to Terry Dill, a golfer on the PGA Senior Tour? My son caddied for him at one time and he is a delightful person.
Barry,

My thoughts exactly. The widow Sarah seems to ring a bell and the CT may refer to Clark or Charles. The fact that they used the name "Sophronia" is a very good indication that this may be your family. You need more research to be sure but this family definitely gets my vote.

Additional information on the children: Hiram from Berlin Wis.; William W. from Hancock Minn.; Henry D. from Litchfield Minn.; Orpha married C. Childs living in Dubuque Iowa. No further information on the remaining children.

8Nancy daughter of 7Josiah, granddaughter of 6John, 5John, 4Edward, 3Benoni, 2Isaac, and 1William Learned who was the first to come to America landing in Charlestown MA sometime around 1630.

My GG Grandmother was Nancy Learned, arriving in Calaveras County, CA during the gold rush and reported in the 1860 census with GG Grandfather Inks. They were later married and had my GGrandmother Laura. On a map of Murphys, CA dated 1876, their appears a Mrs Learned next door to Nancy and Mr. Inks, and a CT Learned next to Mrs Learned. I've been unsuccessful tracking Nancy into New York her reported birth place. The 1880 census of Murphys lists: Sarah Learned, widow, with Albert and Oscar Learned as sons. Can you offer any help?

Re: Kankakee Learned Relatives

I'm not sure how much of your ancestry you have managed to fill in the the last 5 years, but I have information about the Learneds. Sylvester's wife Ida Belle had two husbands. Her first Husband had the last name of Scott (I'm still working on his first name). She had four children by him and I am related to that side of the family. Most of this side of the family (those still living) are still located in the Kankakee/Peotone/Beecher area. Her second husband was Sylvester. They had two children Sylvester Jr ., aka "Lloyd", and Dale Martin, your father.

Please contact me if you would like more information. I can lead you to copies of Census files located on the internet and Sylvester's WWI Draft Card, also on the internet

Jennifer and Jeremy

William Learned: (-1646) : A Will?

I have just finished going over my very old, very early research on the Learned family that was done back when both I and PAF were newbies - and as I was fine-tuning that work, I began to wonder if anyone has ever found a will for William who d. 1646? I found none mentioned in the books I previously used, during that time of living near several good libraries. (Now I have none to go to and have to rely upon the internet). Did he die intestate or ?????? I am desc. from his daughter Sarah who md. (2nd) Thomas Lothrop, one of my 3 lines of Lothrop descent.
