I have some very intersting history on your William Barney Lease as he is part of my families history. His father Andrew Lease and his mother Phoebe Brelsford were also from Virginia and later moved to Ohio. His father Andrew Lease was a brother to my great grandfather John Baldwin Lease (Lees) who also lived in Hampshire county Virginia, which later became West Virginia. W. B. Lease's grandfather was William Leese and his grandmother was a woman called ________ Lambert. William B. Lease' first wife was Sarah Jane, a foreigner and they had a son Albert W. Lease. William Barney Lease was born April 10, 1827. He had been a sailor in Ohio, as his father had owned a huge shipping company in or near Wheeling, W.VA. and then he moved to Putnam county Ohio where he died in 1853. William Barney Lease was married 3 times. First was Sarah Jane ______?___, a foreigner who was the mother of Albert William Lease who was born in 1864 in Texas. Per the 1870 census of Uvalde, Texas and 1910 census of Scotland Co, Harrison, Missouri. She was born in 1820 in Kansas. Then he married Catherine McCarthy who had been widowed twice. She brought children to the marriage of John McCarthy age 9 in 1870;Mary McCarthy age 12 in 1870; Robert A. McCarthy age 15 in 1870 and she and W.B. Lease had Thomas Mack Lease; Allen Lease; William Henry Lease. In the 1870 census W.B. Lease is 44 and Sarah is 50. Sarah Jane was born in in Kansas. Catherine McCarthy was listed as a foreigner on the census, she died when she fell and hit her head on a stone and she died a few days later, leaving W. B. Lease a widower with 7 children. He then married Sarah Fulgram who was a widow with one boy Tom Fulgram. I have a great story to tell you if you would like to read it I'll send it to you as it's too long for this webpage. Also W.B. Lease was killed by Indians in 1881 near Leaky Texas, while taking the pay out to workers who were making shingles for his boss. He made shingles in Texas. Indians robbed and killed him in his wagon. Allan Lease was the first person buried in the cemetery at Leaky Texas, I have a picture of his tombstone. He too was killed by Indians when he was 15 years old. He had moved into a neighbors house the McClaren's and he and Mrs. McClaren were both killed by Indians one morning when she went to hang up her laundry on the line. They left her baby and little daughter alive, but killed Allan and her. Tom Fulgram married and had 7 children. William Barney Lease was born in Viriginia in 1826. He married Catharine McCarthy February 22, 1863. Catharine was twice widowed when she married William Barney. Her parents were both Frenchand immigrated around 1840 when Catharine was young. They came through the old port of Indianola. They had three boys. Thomas Mack Lease, Allen Lease and William Henry. Hi , I am related to the Lease's through Bertha Lease who is my grandmother. How were you able to get Civil War Records on Tobias Lease? In my research,, I was only able to get the short report that tells his company, his rank, and his allegiance. I am also trying to find birth and death dates for Richard and Bertha's children. I have my father Oris of course, and a couple more, but not all. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

That's a clue to her background. I know some Thomas' but will have to look at their line and see if there is a John H. Thomas. I found Oris in the 1920 census of Missouri, lists all his brothers and sisters.

Hi Dottie, My grandfather Richard Thomas and Bertha Lease had 10 children, who are all deceased now. I'm having a hard time finding info on some of them. My father was Oris. On Richard's side of the family, according to his death cert., His father was John H. Thomas, and his mother was Sophronia Bryant. Her father was William Bryant, and I know some of her sibling's names , but that's as far as I got. I would love to know what info you have. I"ve gone back on the Lease side of the family to 1744. I too...am a descendant from the Lease's in Cresaptown. There are tons of us. My grandfather was Frank Marcellus Lease and his parents were Rueben and Hattie Lease. She was supposedly American Indian. Also,they say,her maiden was Lease as well. I've heard someone in the family has a picture of her. I have a picture of him. Sorry but you have the wrong Lease's. Elmer and Thelma were from Missouri. None of those names are Elmers children. Only Larry, Carol, Ronald, Jeannette and Belinda.

I read with much interest your history of the Lease family, as I am a Hollenback researcher of the children of Thomas Hollenback & Margaret [unknown].

I have a copy of the deed showing what happened to Sarah's lot in Licking County, OH. This is my abstract of it:

Book L, page 379
On 21 Nov 1825 Jacob Leese and Sarah his wife of Hampshire Co., VA to Thomas Leese of the same place for the sum of One Dollar to them paid sell one hundred fifty-three and one fourth acres second rate land in Range fourteen Township four Section three and Lot number 7 sell land located in Licking county, OH ...being a part of a greater tract which was divided by the heirs of Thomas Hollenback, dec'd, of Hampshire Co. VA and alloted unto the said Sarah Leese she being one of the children of the said Thomas Hollenback...
Jacob and Sarah each sign with their mark
Witnessed 21 Nov 1825 by David Gibson and Ephraim Dunn, Justices of the Peace with a separate witness for Sarah saying she signed freely; their office was affirmed by John B. White of the County Court of Hampshire Co., VA on 10 October 1828, who is vouched for by Isaac Keykendall? on 10 Oct 1828.

I know that Sarah also should have shared in the estate of her father Thomas in Hampshire Co., VA. I do not have the record of her share being sold or transferred to another family member. Do you have that information?

I do not have a death date for Sarah and have only October 1831 for Jacob, for which I have no source. I'd appreciate help on this, too.

I show the children of Jacob & Sarah as Thomas Alexander [m Sibbel Critchfield] and Cynthia [m William McNary]. Both migrated to Clark Co., IL.

Jeremiah Heriod3 Lease (William2, Andrew1) was born 25 Jun 1802 in Virginia, and died 11 Nov 1862 in Forest City, Holt County, Missouri. He married Mahala Brelsford Abt. 1824 in Hampshire County, Virginia, daughter of Bernard Brelsford and Naomi Edwards. She was born 09 Oct 1804 in Romney, Hampshire County, Virginia, and died 08 Apr 1854 in
Holt County, Missouri. I now know that is it Brelsford, not Belford, as when I found Bernard's land grants, it was spelled Breslford.

Children of Jeremiah Lease and Mahala Brelsford are:

County, Virginia; died Bef. 1845.

I found Bernard Brelsford land grants...
In the Sims Index of Land Grants for West Virgina. Jeremiah Lease is listed as having 56 acres of land in Middle Ricdge in 1830, book 3 page 194 (all imag 205 ancestry.com Sims Index to land grants in W. VA). His father Andrew Lees (Leese) is listed with 237 acres on Patterson's Creek in 1790, book 6 page 6; and Andrew also has 350 acres on Lick Run in 1803 book 9 pg 431; and another 34 1/2 acres near Cor. Geo. Wolfe in 1796 book 9 pg 96. Jacob Leese (Lees) brother to Jeremiah and son of Andrew has 68 acres on Barton's Run in 1819 book 5 pg 257; and William Leese et al has 200 acres on MIddle Ridge in 1846 book 7 pg 205.

According to the 1850 census of Buchanan county Missouri, Washington township dated Oct. 17, 1850 Jeremiah Lease is listed as age 48 born Virginia; Mahala age 41, born VA., children Lydia 11 born VA., Diela 13 born Ohio; Eliza 10 born Ohio; John 8 born Ohio; William 6 born Ohio, and one other mail can't make it out born Missouri 1 year old.

I have wondered for a long time why the name Bernard came up in our line and this is why. The Brelsfords were of English background as far as I have found.

Yes, I think we have talked. Have you added anyone to your line? I have a George Lease, brother to William who had a son George, think he also had a son Henry. My William had a son John B. whose oldest son was Henry b. 1829. Would Gould also be Gold or Goldsberry. A daughter of John B. Mary Lease, married a Gould,and stayed in Broadhead. How far back have you gone on your Henry and George?

My mother-in-law's birth father was Max Lease, son of Abraham and Anna or Annie Lease, Russian Jews who immigranted in 1905/1906. In 1910 the family lived in Newark, NJ. There were other children Isidor, Molly, Pauline, Benni or Zenni (hard to read the census report)
I'm trying to trace them back to Russia.

Do you know if you Walter Lease ended up in Topaz, Washington? I have a Walter Lease but no information on him other than I think he died in Topaz. If this is your Walter Lease then I have a lot of information on this family for you. He would have been born in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota about 1902-1903 I think? He comes from a family of 11 children.

There have been no documented cases of HD among the Native American populations of North America.

So either She Wasn't Native American or more likely the HD is from The Lease (European) side.

I think that is the same Walter Lease! He was my Great Grandfather! He actually retired and passed away on Lopez Island (which could be the Topaz) Washington! That is were I grew up and one of his children (Bruce W. Lease) Still lives there! He is my Grandfather. Yes he was born is Sauk Rapids and has 11 or so brothers and sisters. He was born March 3rd 1914 and passed away Feb 2nd 2006. His wife's name was Francis Minnie Fish. I would love to see the info you have! Please Email me at island_girl361@yahoo.com
