Samuel Leathers was my grandfather. I too know very little about him and none of his family kept in touch with his widow. He was if I recall of Irish decent and married outside his faith which caused family rifts. Isabella had a hard life left to bring up five children on her own, she died 25 April 1974

Gibson as middle name in Leathers Family

My husband's Dad's Mom was a Leathers and he has a middle name "Gibson". I am trying to find out where the Gibson came from in a few of the Leathers relatives. My husband is descended directly from David Gibson Leathers. David had a son Ward Gibson Leathers and David Gibson Leathers' Grandfather had a son named Theodore Gibson Leathers. Does anyone know the origin of the Gibson part of the name? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Well, I AM in shock. How amazing to find Thomas after all these years. Amazing because I not only searched this family while I lived in the area years ago but because the Germanna Association's Record #16/2005 featured the descendents of Michael Clore and I assisted Cathy Clore Frost with the Leathers family and did it all over again. The Clore descent comes through Margaret Clore who married Paul Leathers; their sons, John, Paul and Joshua all came to Northern Kentucky.

Cathy's work is on Ancestry and you can check it right away; the book is in many libraries (don't know where you are). You'll want to check the Germanna site also.

My mind is rambling all over with this - I can't believe the family lived in places I know well in Ca. - the Leathers have a connection to the Ellis family, some of whom lived in Tarrant Co. and I always wondered why they went there.

I'll give you time to absorb all this while I absorb your info on Thomas' family and then let me know where you want to go.

Myrna/ohioriver@pacific.net

How exciting to hook up with someone who has researched the Leathers family. Thomas White Leathers (son of Joshua) was born app 1812 in KY, m 1841 to Matilda (Mary) P Burns b app 1811 in Ky. children: Benjamin Franklin b 10, May 1845 in Covington KY, m Mary Ann Perkins in Visalia CA, d 19, Dec 1906 buried in Oakwood Cemeterty, Ft Worth TX; Joseph Thomas b 1853 KY, d 23, May 1931 Eureka, Humboldt CA (never married) Ellen (Ella) Mae b 31, Dec 1854 Sugar Creek, Gallatin KY, m Wm Eisele 17, Feb 1881 & Wm Miller 21, Jan 1887, d 17, Apr 1920, buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Ft Worth Tarrant Co, TX. (Ellen is my ggrandmother) Found family in 1850 census Gallatin Co, KY, & 1860 census in Daviss Co MO. Lost Thomas & Matilda after that. Family was told they died when Ellen was very young. In the 1850 census, John Burns and Mary Burns are listed. I believe they changed their names to Leathers, but still trying to confirm that info. Would appreciate any info you have on family.

Pat - If you're telling me that you know what happened to Thomas White Leathers and his family, I'm going to go into shock! Thomas was the son of Joshua Leathers and Frances "Frankey" Stansiffer; Joshua was the son of John Leathers and Elizabeth White. I can give you much of that data but I have no indication that John Leathers fought in the RW - although I never specifically searched for a military record (I think there is also a White RW vet). All I know of Thomas is that he married a Matilda P. and they had two children, Franklin and Angelina and no verification other than census for that. I would love to share/trade data with you. It would be wonderful to put all of this family together with the missing Thomas's descendents.
The Daniel LEATHERS in Clear Creek Twp, is probably Daniel, the Dan'l LEATHERS in Madison Twp is probably his brother David. This deduction came from the age of the daughters. David was not married until 1814. Fredrick III went bankrupt and had his land seized. He died intestate between July and Sept 1821. His estate was not settled until 1838. Four of his sons, John, Daniel, Joseph & Samuel, died during that time, all were involved in the administration of his estate. John died insolvent. He & Daniel both died intestate and very little information remains about there estates. One piece of paper in Samuel's estate is all I have found about Daniel: 25 Jul 1835 “The state of Ohio Fa. Co., Personally came before Mr. Salmon Prover one of the acting justices of the Peace within and for said county. Rebecca Bryan formerly Rebecca Leather, who being duly sworn according to Law...she never received any monies from Samuel Leather or his estate, in payment or part payment of any sum or sums due her from said Samuel Leather as one of the heirs of Daniel Leather dec’d and further this defenant saith not ...received of Michael Nigh adm of the estate of Saml Leather dec’d the sum of $2.12 & 1/2- two cents in full of the above mentioned claim.” Rebecca X (her mark) Bryan ----------------------------------------------------------- Fred III's estate was the basis of all kinds of law suits. Some dealing with 10acres of land with several (not all!) of his heirs sued for a share including Mary, Susan, Barbara and Samuel Leathers minor children of Daniel Leathers deceased. Unfortunately these names were not always the same. -------------------- ------ Molly Leathers land records:
1826 Molly Kistler w/o Daniel Leathers Grantor Mathias Kistler by exc. Bk P p 144
1826 Grantee Abr Middlesworth Grantor Molly Leathers sec 32 twp 13 Bk P p145
1827 p 4 Book #7 Range 20, Recorders - Fairfield Co., Oh Court House (Dec 1998)
1827 Grantee Molly Leathers (widow) Grantor Abra. & Barb Middleworth Bk P p 408
1830 Land transaction Molly Leathers to John H. Young sec 32 twp 13 bk S p 106.
1830 Land transaction Molly Leathers to Christian Doner sec 1 twp 12 Bk S p236
1834 “ “ Magdalena Leathers to Thomas Barr sec 9 twp 13 Bk W p70
------------------------------ Hartshorn Cem., Marion Twp., Allen Co., Oh. - Magdalena Leathers w/o Daniel b 7-21-1790 died 3-3- 1863

------------------Without a doubt Fredrick LEATHERS created more paper work in early Fairfield Co. History than any other person. I have found cases dealing with debts, physical assault, bootlegging, banks, family against family, etc. But none lists the heirs of Daniel Leathers.

Rebecca C.
I am researching John Wyatt Leathers, State Senator from Kenton Co Ky.

I am curious how germans from Schwaigern Germany got to be Baptists. Most of the Germans from the south were Catholic or Lutheran.
I speculate that the building where they worshipped still stands. I am working on that hunch.

I also want to find out how they got their 992 acre tract of land that became Fort Mitchell Ky. Was it payment for military service?
Thanks,
dik

Hi - You're on the right track but I can make it easier for you. The Kenton Co. PL has a copy of "The Michael Clore Family", the Germanna publication updated several years ago by Cathi Clore Frost (Margaret Clore married Paul Leathers (Paulus Johannes) and established the Northern Kentucky family). I worked with her on the Leathers and the first generations are all there. I have additional data on the family up to the present and would like to share with you and know where you fit in. Please contact me directly, will you. Thanks...mm
