Seth Leatherwood aka James Moore

I have a letter dated Aug 22, 1907 that contains information regarding Seth Alexander, born 1851 in NC. It is addressed to his daughter, Ella Taylor. I can't decipher the name of the author of the letter. I don't know how I came into possession of this letter, but it contains lots of great info. It references his brothers Marcus (wife, Martha), Rufus, James, Jefferson. Seth changed his name to James Moore.

Female descendants of Zachariah Leatherwood

We are looking for a female descendant from one of Zachariah Leatherwood's elder daughters ELIZABETH LEATHERWOOD HOBBY/HOBBEY(b. abt 1754 VA; d.7 Nov 1844 AL) or NANCY LEATHERWOOD CALVERT (b.abt. 1758 VA; d. 1822 KY) who have a direct female line of descent and would be willing to take a DNA test. We are hoping that a MtDNA test might finally put to rest the controversy over the number of wives that Zachariah had. A direct female line descendant of documented wife Mary Stone is being tested.

Death of Grandma Leatherwood

Appears in the Terrell Time-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 24 July 1891 ...

Death of Mrs. Leatherwood

We regret to announce the death of Grandma Leatherwood which occurred at her home in the Paradise neighborhood last Friday. She was well known to many of our citizens as a zealous Christian and a devout Methodist. She thoroughly knew and practiced well the creed. For many years she has been a hopeless invalid. During all these weary years of suffering her husband watched anxiously by her bedside, praying yest scarcely hoping for her restoration. She was a good neighbor and a model Christina woman. We offer our heart felt sympathy to the bereaved husband and children in this, their sad bereavement. Kaufman Review
I can step in here with you and jennie... Mila Houck is a cousin to my grandmother Elsie Emma Leatherwood somewhere down the line... The houcks are prevalent in Dallas Texas and are in my families funerary books and grans notes say that they were cousins... so if she was then you both are to me... I would like to have both of your lines so that I can add them... I think I am tracking so far with what I have seen here... I have already some info that I had pieced together before you both... I think the leatherwood line of yours should be out of Miles N.(Nathaniel) and Louisa J. Leatherwood... I haven't tracked it back to which leatherwood brother on the tree, but we all decend down from Edward Leatherwood of England...

Email me...

Shari

Family researcher, Joseph D. Leatherwood, has our mystery man, William, son of old Zachariah, as being married to Ann Calvert, daughter of Jesse Calvert and Mary Brown. Their children are listed as:

Priscilla b. abt 1787
Uriah b. abt 1788
Hollen b. abt 1790
Zachariah b. abt 1792

I do not know the source of the info, but commend Mr. Leatherwood for his research.

If my Zachariah is a son of William, then we know that the birth years are off by at least 5 yrs, as he was born in 1797.

Re: South Carolina Leatherwoods

There appears to be somewhat of a mystery surrounding William Leatherwood, son of old Zachariah and the names of his wife and children. Although it has been established that old Zachariah took in and raised William's children that were orphaned ... how many I do not know, and their names?

I had not heard that William was 'Prince William'.

William's father was Zachariah b. Bet. 1735 - 1745
and his mother is said to be Jane Calvert b. 5 Nov 1758, although his second wife was Mary Stone.

William died before 1804.

Zachariah b. 1797 is enumerated on pg 233 of the 1830 Spartanburg Census.

The other is Zachariah Perry Leatherwood b.1807, son of George H. Leatherwood. Zachariah P. md. Agnes Susan Castleberry and they are enumerated with their daughter Susannah Caroline b. 1829 on page 239 of the 1830 Spartanburg census.

The Zachariah b. 1811 that md Elizabeth Thornton did not have a child until 1838. All 4 of their children were born in Georgia. His first born son being named William.

Zachariah b. 1797 md to Nancy Jane Allen named their first born son John.

Zachariah & Nancy J. Allen Leatherwood are my 4th gr.grandparents. They married in Spartanburg, SC and are named as members in the church minutes of Bethel Baptist and Unity Baptist in Spartanburg. Sometime in 1838 or 1839 they removed to Shelby Co., Alabama. There were Leatherwood kin already residing in the county. My family then removed to Itawamba Co., MS by 1848 and are named in Harmony Baptist Church minutes. I lose them from 1853 to 1872 where they again turn up in Lawrence Co., Alabama.

I do not know why they left South Carolina, but suspect there may have been a disagreement within the family after John B. died and possibly about the time of Priscilla's death.

Church minutes very clearly state that there was a disagreement over property after John B. died and those involved were sited by the church.

In estate papers of Priscilla Leatherwood, references are made to notes held in the name of Z. Leatherwood as owing debts and not returning a wagon.

Unity Baptist Church sites Zachariah Leathewood as 'moving privately to defraud creditors' in 1838.

1840 finds my Zachariah b.1797 as being indicted in Alabama because of a dispute with Andrew Jordan in Shelby County. I do not know details but find it coincidental that Spencer Fountain Leatherwood, another son of John & Priscilla, married Clara Jordan.
Andrew Jordan could have been sent to collect the debt owed to Priscilla's estate.

I would love to find out if my Zachariah was an orphan of William. Would make more sense to me for cousins to have tried to collect a debt instead of siblings.

Zachariah b. 1797 & Nancy Jane Allen b. 1798 had the following children:

Mary Caroline b. 23 Dec 1817
Elizabeth Permelia b. 20 Jan 1820
Priscilla C. b. 07 Nov 1822
John b. 11 Dec 1824
William Allen b. 20 July 1828
Joice Spencer b. 31 Jan 1830
Andrew Jackson b. 07 Dec 1832
Nancy Jane b. 19 Jan 1837
Susannah C. b. 26 April 1840

All children except for Susannah were born in South Carolina, Susan being born in Alabama.
Birthdays were recorded in the family bible of William Lindsey Allen, father of Nancy J. Allen Leatherwood.

Don't think that I have helped in your search. Is it possible that someone has confused the surname of Sarah? Could she have been married more than once? Or could she have been a step-daughter?

Will be happy to help in whatever way I can.

The late researcher, John Strickland, had referenced that John B. Leatherwood Jr, son of John & Priscilla, was married twice...one being named Nancy. I do not know how reliable the source may be, but thought it worth mentioning.

Read with interest some of your other posts and noticed that you also work on the "Allen" surname.

As you know, my Zachariah Leatherwood b. 1797 md Nancy Jane Allen, daughter of William Lindsey Allen and Mary Calvert.

Mary Calvert was first married to Dennis Lindsey.

William Lindsey Allen is son of John Peter Allen and Elizabeth Lindsey.

When Zachariah & Nancy Allen Leatherwood migrated west to Alabama & Mississippi, William L. Allen disappears from records. It is suspected that he also migrated to Franklin County, but this remains a mystery.

The Hobby family married into the Leatherwoods in SC.

Something else to mention in your search for William Leatherwood, is the 1850 GA Campbell Co Census enumerates a William Leatherwood age 61 ... b. abt 1789

Who exactly are you looking for in the Leatherwood line? {name, dob, location ?} You have mentioned Sarah Blundell as being confused with Sarah Murphy, wife of John B. Jr. ??

Just a thought, but I find it odd that JBL Jr and Sarah did not have children for abt 6yrs. Could be that he actually had married twice ?
I am sure that the daughter listed on the 1820 census is Mary Caroline born 1817.

Zachariah & wife, Nancy Allen Leatherwood are enumerated next door to Priscilla, widow of John B. Leatherwood on the 1820 census.

I obtained a transcription of John's will online.

I can't recall ever stating that my Zachariah was the first born son of John B. & Priscilla.
The 1800 Spartanburg SC census shows in the household of John Leatherwood, 5 sons undr age 10 yrs, 1 son age 10 to 16 yrs, a total of 6 sons.

Sons of John & Priscilla posted by other researchers are John Jr. b. 1789, Jesse b. 1791, Spencer b. 1795, William b. 1797, Miles b. 1800, Isaac b. 1803, James b. 1809, Zachariah b. 1811. Birth years may very per researchers.

Assuming the birthdates are correct, there are only 4 sons born before 1800.

It has also been suggested that William Leatherwood who was the son of old Zachariah, and brother to John B. Leatherwood, may be the father of Zachariah b. 1797. There are documents, not in my possession, that state that old Zachariah obtained a slave from Maryland to care for the orphans of William Leatherwood.

Zachariah b. 30 Aug 1797 d. 25 June 1872
source: tombstone,
Chalybeate Methodist Church Cemetery, Lawrence Co., AL

Nancy Jane Allen b. 11 Sep 1798 d. 1880
source: tombstone, see above

Thank you for responding to my post, and will be happy to share what info I have.
Are you relation to this family?
Sharon asks:
Who exactly are you looking for in the Leatherwood line? {name, dob, location ?} You have mentioned Sarah Blundell as being confused with Sarah Murphy, wife of John B. Jr. ??

Any descendants or ancestors of Sarah Blundell.

Just a thought, but I find it odd that JBL Jr and Sarah did not have children for abt 6yrs. Could be that he actually had married twice ?

I guess he could have, but, no one has yet to tell me where the name Sarah Murphy came from or anything about her. I wish someone could find marriages in Spartanburg area...frustrating. I know that Absalom is with Sarah/Sally and John in Lincoln Co in 1840 as the 80-90 year old. I know he is with Sarah/Sally in same place 1860 at 106 years old. He was in Westmoreland Co, VA from birth abt 1755, in Spartanburg SC 1800-1830, lost him in 1850.

Who knows that there weren't children born to Sally that died in the 6 year gap? Perhaps I will never know.

IF my memory is right, someone posted to the Leatherwood board that Sarah Murphy md Leatherwood in 1877 and was confused? That would have been a different marriage and I dont believe the posting person ever said for certain where she found that except through Ancestry. I may be wrong on that date.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this discussion. Hope it helps others as well. And I am so happy for you that you located your William's correct father. Does the tombstone definitely show 1797 or could that last 7 be a 2? Of course, remember that death records are secondary evidence.

If John B, Jr. married twice, when did he supposedly marry a Nancy? Before he married a Sarah or between Oct will writing and death in Nov 1843. I suspect that may have been a different John B. Jr? John B. Sr could certainly have married a Nancy before he married Priscilla, since he was abt 22 at that marriage.

We'll just keep looking, right?

Tosca

In a far, far way. I am chasing Leatherwoods, as John B, Jr, Zachariah's brother, we believe, married Sarah "Sallie" Blundell, daughter of Absalom Blundell, Jr. and the Blundell line is my husband's, Mother-in-law's line.

I have recently posted that data on this board, questioning where someone found the name of Sarah Murphy, as others have touted Murphy to be his wife.

Permelia, Mary and William are the possible known siblings of Sarah Blundell. Mother unknown. Permelia md Robert Wood; Mary md James Arnold, and William md Jane Greer, all in Spartanburg.

Do you know who William Leatherwood b 1758, son of Zachariah the elder, married and his chldren's names? I was amused when I saw the post that he was actually named Prince William & certainly do not dispute that possibility.

Or do you know who William Leatherwood b abt 1796 married and if there were any children? Is this who you say died young and may have orphan children, maybe Zachariah?

The Williams and Jesses are as difficult to trace as Johns and Thomases....at least Zachariah is not quite as common a name.

I did have Priscilla's census record but had not realized it was next to Zachariah's in 1820.

Have you determined which of the 1830 census records belongs to which Zachariah - page 233 or 239?
The Zachariah b 1810 md to Elizabeth Thornton certainly didn't name any of his children what appear to be consistent Leatherwood names, but he may have had more children than I have seen in postings.

That's enough questions for this one. Thank you for getting back to me.

Oh! I do have John Leatherwood's 1820 will. It appears that he sort of named the group at the last in order of birth, and that would indicate that perhaps you are correct that Zachariah and Nancy were out of William, but why didn't he provide for them like he did Nathaniel, out of his son Jesse? Wonder if we will ever know?

Tosca
I would tend to agree that you have the correct Zachariah and Nancy Jane Allen, and wonder about the 1820 census record - it appears that he and a wife have had a daughter?
1820 SC SPARTANBURG p 268
Leatherwood, Zachariah 1M 16-26 1F -10 1F 16-26
1 in Agric

Do you actually have John's will? Have you posted it anywhere, i.e. on any message boards or through USGenWeb, SC County site or whatever?

Also, in one of your other postings you believe him to be the first born, do you mean born 1787 rather than 1797? Before John Baswell, Jr.? That confused me a little.

I would be interested in your birthdates, marriages and burials, and sources for same.

Thank you very much.
Tosca

John B. Leatherwood, Jr and possible wife Sarah Blundell, d/o Absalom

First, thank you for your posts and interest. Maybe we can solve John's wife's name.

I changed the subject as we are not talking about Jesse Vincent...

The census that indicated FRA:
1860 TN LINCOLN CO PLEASANT PLAINS P. O. M653 Roll 1261 p 141, image 2 6/7/1860 by N? Bonemann/Brourn? 100 M W b FRA

merely shows that another individual was living in Sarah's household who happened to be 100 yrs old and b in FRAnce. I couldn't determine exactly how that name was spelled.
Sarah's father's name is above his.

On the 1850 census I made an error, that Sarah was b in TN not TX. Looking at the census records on Heritage Quest with lousy handwriting of some of the census takers makes it difficult at times to knowwhat state is indicated.

Blundell is spelled various ways, as is Absalom. Blundol, Blundall, Blundel, Blunedell, Blumdel, etc. Absolom, Absolem, Absalem, etc...

Absalom Jr was born abt 1755.

Absalom Sr remarried in 1771 to Susanna Randall Delozier, a widow, and died in 1774. Thomas IV was his eldest son, who by 1776 was probably on his own at age 21, with Absalom Jr 4-5 years younger, but already 16. The other two sons of Absalom Sr had already died. 1776 Tithables for Westmoreland County, VA by George Turberville listed: Thomas BLANDEL - Tithables: Absalom BLANDEL; Arch Prue 4 (Himself, Absalom, and two slaves)

VA Mag of History Vol 10 p 230: 1782 Thomas Jr owned 7 slaves, Thomas Sr owned 0 slaves, William owned 1 slave and Absalom (Jr) owned 3 slaves Westmoreland Co. VA on List of Slaveowners. Jr and Sr denoted the younger and older, not necessarily father and son. William had to be Thomas and Absalom Jr's uncle, brother of their father Absalom Sr, as their brothers William (1736) and Garner (1764) both have already died. The older Thomas is Thomas III, William and Absalom Sr's brother.

The 1782 "personal property tax list" shows Absalom as a free white tithable over 16, with 3 slaves (no age category), 1 horse, 2 cattle.
1783 tax list shows him as self over 21, with 1 Black over 16, 3 blacks over 12, 1 horse, 2 cattle.
1784 tax list repeats 1783 listing except it says free over 21 for him.
By 1787 (April) he has no free white males over 16, 1 Black over 16, 3 blacks over 12, 2 horses, 4 cattle.

(This is Absalom, Jr. doing the accounting of his sister Sarah Baker Blundell (now Waite, Write/Wright, Hailey or Bailey?) to Thomas Blundell and the court, Thomas being the executor of Absalom Sr's will (he died 1774). Also, the accounting is necessary due to Sarah marrying, probably in 1785, when she no longer is considered an orphan.
All three of you last postings have helped me. And I agree that Joseph D. has done his research well...I agree with him that Jane Calvert was the 1st wife and Mary Stone the 2nd wife of Zachariah b 1735 Annapolis, Anne Arundel co, MD. I'm sure a lot of people will be changing the mother's name of their several great grandparents.
Isn't discussion great?

I haven't yet figured out who this William Leatherwood belongs to, unless possibly he is another child of William and Alice Calvert Leatherwood:
1820 SC SPARTANBURG NO TWP M33 Roll 120 P 322
Leatherwood, William 4M -10 1M 26-45 1F -10 1F 10-16 1F 26-45 1 in Agric
John Hobby on this page as well.
This William could have been born 1781 and could be a Jr.
Maybe Joseph will jump in on this one.

I know John Hobby Sr and Jr both were tied into or neighbors of this family.

Thank you so much for your posting back to me.

1. I agree that John B died 1843 Lincoln Co, TN. I was speaking of Ssrah's father who is 106 yrs old in 1860, not her husband. However, John, Jr's his wife survived him until after 1860 as per the census records:
1850 TN LINCOLN NO TWP LISTED Series: M432 Roll: 887 P 213, image 2 12/3/1850 by O. W. I agree with you wholeheartedly that Jane Calvert was the 1st wife of Zachariah, who had 4 children, Elizabeth, William, Nancy, and John B. Senior. I believe many people have Mary Stone as the mother of the wrong children. I also believe that as more children came, John decided to honor his first wife's first and last names by giving them to his children.

3. Thank you for your FTM website. You seem to have done a terrific job, on what I have looked at so far.

So if you can find your notes about Sarah Murphy, I would be interested in who she came from, where she came from, etc...and why you think she was John B. Junior's wife.

I can give you more data on Absolom's family and background if you wish. He had a sister Sarah Baker Blundell that he did accounting on after their Absalom Senior died.

Tosca

Joseph,
Could you please tell me how you know that John B. Leatherwood married Sarah Murphy, and is this John Baswell L., Jr. that was born abt 1789 SC, son of John & Priscilla?
Please, where did Sarah come from in VA? (1860 census)

I have John B.L., Jr married to Sarah Blundel, d/o Absolom Blundel. He is with her in the 1860 census in Lincoln Co at age 106, and it stands to reason that he is with his daughter in his old age.

Are we talking about the same John B. Leatherwood, Jr.? Am I thoroughly confused?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Tosca
Let me look at my files. I am not sure where I got the data source - off the top of my head, but I will look at it over the next day or two and get back with you. As I recall it came via the LDS files and, I think, Betty Lowry Leatherwood (but don't hold me on that). There were a bunch of those Leatherwoods around Lincoln County.

John B. (Braswell) L, Sr. was born 27 Oct 1762
John B. (Braswell) L, Jr. was born 22 Aug 1789

For more go to:

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/l/e/a/Joseph-D-Le...

There is much confusion about the children of both Senior and Junior. Seniors children spread out across the south, but he died on 23 Dec 1820 at age 58 in Spartanburg, S.C.

Junior would have been 71 years old in 1860, not 106. However, I have him dying in 1843 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. I will also look that up as well to see from whence these data come.

I will dig up my files on the John B. Leatherwood, Senior family. One of his great grandsons, Jerry Holman Leatherwood, was a revenuer in Northeast Alabama. He lost his life going after stills in the region, there is a full account I read in the Gadsden Times about his death and investigation and trial. I have meant to try and get the court records and write a history of it - the trial for those who murdered him was held in Huntsville back then.

But I digress, thanks for your inquiry....and I will look at my research and get back in touch with you.

The source for the name Sarah Murphy as the wife of John B. Leatherwood, Junior is Descendants of Virginia Calvert, compiled by Ella Foy O’Gorman, (Easely, South Carolina, Southern Historical Press, 1947), Page 194.

It was also cited in the papers of Betty Lowry Leatherwood whose husband's line links back through John B. Leatherwood, Sr. I may be that she also employed the same source.

So your findings might well be correct. There is no census data or marriage data to confirm that Sarah Murphy. There was also another Sarah Murphy married to a Jesse Leatherwood in Lincoln County.

There was an Absolum Leatherwood who settled in Northern Alabama and I believe he was married to a Sarah..... think he lived around Hunstville, Alabama in the early 1800s. I have tried to find out how he fits in the lines. I currently have him tied to Holland Leatherwood, but that is not proven. Perhaps we have discovered a link....

Will post my thoughts and research on Sarah... tomorrow.

Semper Fi

Karen:
Do you know who the parents and siblings of William Henry Harrison Leatherwood are? Did they all settle in the Canoe Alabama area (Escambia AL--county)? I was told that Susannah's last name was Roberson, not Robinson. My great great grandmother was Siddy Roberson (sister of Susannah). Siddy married Jackson LaFate Stewart. Their son Ramsom was my paternal Grandmother's father. A couple of my cousins and I are getting serious on continuing genealogy research on our family. Our distant cousin's wife (one the Joiner/Stewart side) in TX has done a vast amount of research and is sending me her research on CD. She did not trace the Leatherwood connection so the information you have provided on ancestry.com is invaluable to me.
Do you know if Siddy was American Indian?
Best regards,
Sharon Estelle
Bay Minette, AL
bush153@bellsouth.net
