I tried to get my son in last year- he had the grades, but I make too much money- they are passing out the scholership money, such as it is, based on need. Doubt if that met Elias Warner's criteria.

Was Anna Foote, daughter of Isaac and Anna Hickok, the wife of William Barker and Amos Hickok?

Looking for primary documentary confirmation that Anna Foote, daughter of Isaac and Anna Foote, was (1) the wife of William Barker and (2) subsequently the wife of Amos Hickok.

Several genealogies state that Anna Foote, born 8 Apr 1774, probably Charlotte, VT, first married William Barker, born 1769 - 1770, died 22 August 1796, Champlain, NY (age 24 or 26), buried in Charlotte, VT; and later married Amos Hickok, born 1778 - 1779, Washington, CT, died 3 Jun 1839, Charlotte, Vermont. Anna (Foote) Barker Hickok died 26 April 1823, Charlotte, VT. I am unaware of any primary documents that confirm this.

On page 173, #188, of the Leavenworth Genealogy, by Elias W. Leavenworth, it says that Betsey Leavenworth married William Orson Barker. William Orson Barker was the son of William Barker, who died in 1796 and had been born about 1770. No mother of William Orson Barker is given. William Orson Barker was born July 6, 1795, shortly before his father died, according to the Leavenworth Genealogy, that also states that William Orson Barker lived mostly in Charlotte, Vermont.

According to a newspaper article about Nathaniel Hickok, son of Amos and Anna Hickok, he had a half brother named William O. Barker, living in either Charlotte or Shelburne, Vermont. So it seems that Anna (Foote) Barker was the mother of William Orson Barker.

Betsey Leavenworth and William Orson Barker had several children, one of whom they named Alonzo Hickok, according to the Leavenworth Genealogy (as well as William Orson Barker, Jr., Sarah Jennette Barker, and Lucy Ann Barker, and other children.)

I am wondering if the descendants of Betsey Leavenworth and William Orson Barker have Bibles, newspaper articles, etc. that confirm that Anna Foote married William Barker and Amos Hickok.

GIDEON LEAVENWORTH, b. 1748 Woodbury, CT. listing in LEAVENGOOD genealogy book.

A Genealogy of the Leavenworth Family in the United States: With Historical Introduction, Etc. 1873 - 376 pages

Page 99

59. GIDEON LEAVENWORTH, (THOMAS, THOMAS, THOMAS) b. Feb 21, 1748, Woodbury, CT. m. MARY COLE, of Watertown, dau of THOMAS COLE. Lived in Watertown and then Hamden in early life and then removed to the Susquehannah. Then lived for a time in Hamden and New Marlborough, MA., and returned to Watertown. He d. at Watertown in the old TRUMBULL house, June 7, 1833. She d. at same place in April 2, 1836 aged 80. About 1823 he visited his nephew, Dr. David Leavenworth, of Great Barrington, Mass. He then lived at New Marlborough, Mass.

CHILDREN:

160. JOHN, b. in Watertown, Sept 10 1775; d. Aug 27, 1822.

161. JARED, b. at the home of his grandfather, THOMAS COLE, (July 17, 1774, JARED L. PITCHER says) at Watertown in the hard winter of 1781.

162. MARY, b. in Watertown Aug 1 1783, d. March 7, 1870 at Woodbury.

He was a remarkably worthy, genial, agreeable and intelligent old man. He was not possessed of much of this world's goods, but he was happy and content. He was remarkably familiar with the genealogy of the entire family, and fifty years since there was scarcely one man
of the family, from DR. THOMAS of Ripton, down, with whose name, residence and business he was not familiar. He furnished a large part of the facts for the genealogical tree published in 1840, and made by WILLIAM and E. W. LEAVENWORTH; and but for him, it is not probably that this genealogy of the family would ever have been written, for this work was commenced only to revise, correct and enlarge that.

The house called the Old TRUMBULL House was formerly the residence of the REV. JOHN TRUMBULL of Watertown, about a mile below the village on the Waterbury road. It was the place of birth of his son JOHN T., the author of MCFINGAL. See a woodcut of it in BARBAR's Historical Collection of Connecticut.

He lived in the enjoyment of a serene and quiet old age, with the partner of his youth, and died, I am sure, at peace with the world and his God. He was a millwright and built mills in various places far and near in early life. He lived at Oxford, Conn., in 1808, and in 1812 moved to Towanda, Penn., from SHEPHARD's brook in Hamden.

Full view - About this book - www.books.google.com
===========================================================

The Leavenworth Genealogy by Elias Warner Leavenworth, 1873, states that Mary Elizabeth Joslyn, who married Abel Leavenworth, was a widow of Samuel C. Alexander, of Williston, Vermont. They married 29 May 1835. He died 13 September 1842. The Genealogy also states that they had one daughter, as well as three sons, one who died at age twelve and two who died in the Civil War.
I am particularly interested in learning the name and other info about the son who died at age 12.
Further research shows that the other siblings were Sarah S. Alexander, b. 15 Sep 1838, Williston, Vt., who married John Pomeroy Patten on 1 Mar 1873, in Charlotte, Vt.; Samuel C. Alexander, b. 1843,Williston, d. 7 Oct 1862; and Robinson I. (or maybe Robert J.) Alexander, b. 1838, Williston,d. 23 Dec. 1862.

I'm trying to find this person parent's. She is listed in her husband's (John Allen Miller) obituary as Lydia M. Bullis Leavenworth. She married John on October 10, 1852 in Harrison, Winnebago County, Illinois. They moved to Iowa on November 4, 1852. She was 21 at the time of the marriage so she could have been married before. She was born on December 13, 1831 and died on February 23, 1908.

I haven't found which, Bullis or Leavenworth is her last name. Any information would be appreciated.
It is interesting that you have so much information on the Leavenworth family, John...you must be interested in genealogy...I love history and it is neat to realize that all our ancestors lived through all those exciting times in history.....My great-great-grandfather's Civil War letters are very interesting...I was amazed at how fancy and elaborate the writing is.....He addresses his wife, Catherine in very adoring words...they had a two-year-old son, Charles....and after he wrote one of the letters I have, he came home on furlough and Catherine conceived my great-grandfather, george Hart...a son he never lived to see since he was killed on the battlefield shortly before the war ended......I don't usually spend this much time "on-line"-but I have a son who has been studying abroad in Prague, and is now traveling through Croatia, and had tried to get into Bosnia 9 a very dangerous place right now)....he always keeps me on the edge of my chair.....and I've been waiting for him to communicate (he only e-mails)...Yesterday, he had almost been arrested by border guards and had been charged hundreds of dollars for train fare.... (Eastern bloc countries are famous for gouging)...and was staying at some house in Croatia 'filled with people"....I was at my wits end and going to contact the US Embassy over there, when he sent us another message telling us" not to worry, "he was staying at a beach house on the Croatian coast and had his train ticket to return to Prague.....What a kid! He loves history and politics, too and wants to be right in the thick of things....Hope I didn't bore you.......Lani Hoeh

I've never researched the Mallory side nor the Hart side.

I'm in Dallas, Texas.

What a treasure you have in those letters. I'm sure they are moving to read. I wonder how they differ from letters today from our soldiers in the field.

John, are you related to Blanche Hart, the sister of my grandmother, Helen Hart Boettcher?...I believe there were 6 children in that family....Helen, Hila (twins), Blanche, Stuart, Byron and Hazen........Have you ever researched the Mallory or Hart side of the family......Charles Hart, (Blanche and Helen's grandfather) fought in the Civil War and I have some original letters from him to his wife, Catherine Hart written on the battlefield at Vicksburg.......A cousin of my father's (still living) has about 40 original Civil war letters written between Catherine Hart and her husband Charles, who was killed in battle at the War's end......Where do you live? I live in Sebewaing, Mi. Lani Hoeh

Hey John! That's funny......your research is pretty good, but Helen Hart and Elmer Boettcher had 7 sons and 3 daughters....I am the daughter of their eldest son, Robert...the seven sons were; Tom Thomas G.), Dick,(Richard) Harry, 9Harold) Jerry,(Jerald...I believe) Gene, (Eugene), Bob( Robert) and Wally(Wallace)....the daughters: Ruth, Honey (Helen), and Norma....Did you also know that Helen's Hart's family on the Mallory side can trace their lineage back to the year 1010 a.d.? And have ancestors who fought and died in the Holy Land? Lani Hoeh

Yeah, it is unclear who Mary is. I have the same question in my notes, too. If I turn up the answer, I'll let you know.

My research shows Helen Hart married Elmer Boettcher and has 1 son, Richard Boettcher. Are you daugher of this Richard and have married into the Hoeh family?

/John

I forgot to add, John, that I have done some research in the past, and was told by an Englishman whose mother was of Welsh descent that the name Leavenworth was probably originally a Welsh name...Elias Leavenworth kind of speculates that too in his genealogy book on the family and he had traveled to England also, tracing the first Thomas to the parish of St. Clare in London....maybe that's why you could't get any further back than the first Thomas Leavenworth from London, Eng. in the mid-1600's......

Yes, I would appreciate that very much for the Leavenworth ancestors. I've only found some info on the Greffoz ancestors so far.

That is correct on Randolph Sr. However, have both Sr. & Jr. with middle name spelling of "Julian." I would be happy to share the updates I have on everyone so far.

I have also been in contact with son of Maxine. Unfortunately, she passed away in May of this year.

Please e-mail me & let me know where you fit in the family tree as well.

Thanks, Kristi

From A Genealogy of the Leavenworth Family in the United States by Elias Warner Leavenworth:

Thomas Leavenworth married at Charlotte, Vermont, as his second wife Mary Mosier, daughter of Jesse Mosier of New Milford, Connecticut and then Charlotte, Vermont. Children of this second marriage were:
1. Maria Leavenworth, who married Elander Stevens of Hopkington, NY. Four children.
2. Seth Leavenworth. No known children.
3. Mark Leavenworth, born 5 April 1814. Three children.
4. Ruth Leavenworth, born 1815, died 1 January 1839 at Stockholm, NY, married Judson Wakefield of Williston, Vermont. Three children.
5. Mary Leavenworth, born 1818, married Isaac Staples of Parishville, NY. No children.
6. Minerva Leavenworth, born 1819, married "said" Judson Wakefield in 1842. She died 25 December 1863 at the age of 44. (This Judson Wakefield is the same man who married the younger sister, Ruth, who died in 1839). Four children.

I should mention that Thomas Leavenworth's first wife, Ruth Johnson, also bore him six children, two sons and four daughters.

This would appear to be Mark Leavenworth, born 5 April 1814 at Huntington, Vermont, the son of Thomas Leavenworth and his second wife, Mary Mosier. He married Eunice Sprague on 16 October 1836 at Huntington. They had three surviving children, and lost several others. the three children were:

1. Betsey Leavenworth, born 4 November 1837 at Huntington, VT, married William McIntosh.
2. James Leavenworth, born 3 February 1845 at Bangor, Franklin County, NY.
Henry Leavenworth, born 13 August 1850 at Brandon, Franklin County, NY.

Mark Leavenworth's father, Thomas Leavenworth, was baptised 28 December 1766 and born at Oxford, Connecticut. He was the son of Thomas Leavenworth and his second wife, Rhoda Olds. Thomas Leavenworth married first, Ruth Johnson, daughter of Alexander Johnson. There were six children from this marriage.

Thomas Leavenworth married second Mary Mosier at Charlotte, VT, daughter of Jesse Mosier of New Milford, CT. and later Charlotte, VT. There were six children from the second marriage. Thomas Leavenworth died in July, 1850. Mary Mosier died in August, 1850.

I have the book, A Genealogy of the Leavenworth Family. This is as close as I can come to Melian.

A Melines Conkling Leavenworth, son of Jesse Leavenworth and Catherine Conkling, was born 4 January 1762 at Waterbury, Connecticut. "He graduated at Yale College in 1784; went to Augusta, GA and became a planter. Married Mrs. Anne Lamarr, 1801, of Augusta, and resided at that place until his death, July 20, 1823. He left no issue. His house and home was in South Carolina, a little below Hamburgh, which is opposite to Augusta."

I not sure if this is the man you are looking for or not, but he did live in South Carolina for the 1820 census.

Elias Warner Leavenworth

As an offshoot of my genealogy research, I've discovered ephemera as a hobby. That's collecting historical documents, advertising, etc.

I am not an Leavenworth, but tonight on an ephemera website, I found a 3-pg letter for sale. Frankly, these people make me CRAZY. The seller states in his description, "Great illustrated letterhead with a slice of real American history." They don't realize that for genealogists, these pieces of history are our family stories.

Anyway, I digress. I'm posting this message because I thought the Leavenworth family might like to know about this document.

The description reads:

"1881 ALS A three page letter written by Elias Warner Leavenworth, bank president lawyer, on Syracuse Savings Bank stationery. Contents of personal nature dealing with memorial works. Warner was born in Canaan, NY in 1803, died in Syracuse in 1887. Graduated from Yale in 1824, Mayor of Syracuse 1849-1859, Member of the assembly 1850 1857, Secretary of State of NY, 1854-55, President Lincoln appointed him commissioner under the convention with New Granada, Elected to the 44th Congress 1875-77 and was the Author of the Leavenworth family genealogy, 1873. Not a famous New York statesman, but a very busy guy all his life. Great illustrated letterhead with a slice of real American history. Folded letter, 8"h x 5"w, excellent condition. SH 1.25"

As you can see, ephemerists are interested in the letterhead, not the letter, though it seems the seller did take the time to find out about Elias. He is asking $35.00 for this.

If you'd like to see it (there is a scanned image), the URL is
http://www.ephermeranet.com/cgi-local/client_display_record....

If you ever come across Salisbury, Brumfield, Scarbrough, or Kayter history, you can return the favor.

Hope this blesses the Leavenworth family!

Colleen

Your Randolph would be "Randolph Julien Leavenworth" b. June 6, 1871 in San Francisco (person #795 in Elias' genealogy.). I can put together more information tracing the Leavenworth family line backward, if you like.

Would you mind sharing with me any additional information on the generations past the 3 children you listed in your post?

/John
