Hello,
Would you have any information about a John Ledbetter whose estimated dob is about 1941 and resided in or near Bakersfield, CA during the mid-1950's, attended school (est. 1955-1959), was active in sports and written about in the paper. We don't know which school or which paper, or where he was born, or anything at all about him except he was somewhere near Jay and Opal Hall's house at 3122 N. Inyo in Bakersfield, during the summer of 1955.
The story I have is that John Ledbetter is my birth brother and our birth mother worked at the CA DMV in Bakersfield sometime after I was born in July 1955. Unfortunately, I don't know her name, yet.
Absolutely any help you can provide will be appreciated. Cindy

Hi John,
Did you ever, or do you now have any family members who resided in the Bakersfield CA area? I'm searching for my birth brother (est. dob about 1941) and I'm told my birth mother worked for the Bakersfield DMV sometime after I was born in July 1955. They said my brother's name was John Ledbetter, he was activein sports and written about in the paper. Unfortunately, I don't know my birth mother's name, yet. She may have had a daughter born in 1953, too. Absolutely any help you can offer will be appeciated. Thanks so very much.
Hello John,
I'm advocating for Cindy who is searching for her birth family. She has been told her brother's name is John Ledbetter who resided in or near Bakersfield, CA and was active in sports and was written about in the newspaper. Possibly the Bakersfield Californian?? We don't know which schools, nor do we know which paper.
She believes John may have been born around 1941 as she was told he was about 14 years old at the time of her birth. There may also be a sister (est. dob 1953) who was about two years old at the time of Cindy's birth. We don't know her last name. Maybe Cheryl/Sheryl/Sherill/Sherry as a first name, but again, we don't know.
Any ideas? Absolutely, any leads you can give will be appreciated greatly.
Thank you.
Linda
Arnold and Velva are my great grand parents. They moved to Oregon from Stearns, Ky.

I am trying to find more information from my grandfather, Roy Ledbetter, and my Father Steven Ledbetter, both of which reside in Oregon. Only recently started piecing everything together here.

My name is Damien, I live in Clarksville, TN

This response was posted on the Texas Genealogy Forum:

Posted by: Joan E. Rambo
Date: April 06, 2009 at 07:20:35

If you Google Kilgore Highway, it is located in Tyler, TX. This death record also puts John W. Ledbetter in Tyler at the time of his death, and the record says he lived there for 29 years.

TX Dth Idx 1890-1976 -- http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?... -- You can view digitized copy of the original death record, see more details, make copies and look for others, too.

Name: John Wesley Ledbetter
Death date: 09 Feb 1961
Death place: Tyler, Smith, Texas
Gender: Male
Race or color (on document): White
Age at death: 91 years
Estimated birth year:
Birth date: 25 Mar 1869
Birth place: New Market, Alabama
Marital status: Widowed
Spouse name:
Father name: J.
John W. Ledbetter, b. 1869 AL, d. East Texas

I was looking through my grandfather's Bible, recently rediscovered, and found a newspaper clipping which may be of interest to this family. My grandfather was John B. Pate, who was probably living in Palestine, Texas, at the time.

It is a well-preserved newspaper photo of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Ledbetter. With computer enhancement, it could be a very nice photo of them.

The caption over the photo reads: "Married Fifty Years". Under the photo, the text reads:

"Mr. and Mrs. John W. Ledbetter, who live on the Kilgore Highway, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday. They were married on Oct. 22, 1889. Mr. Ledbetter was 70 years old last March 25 and Mrs. Ledbetter will be 70 Nov. 4. They both were born and reared in Huntsville, Ala., and came to Texas after their marriage. They have 10 children, all living except one, 24 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren."

The name of the newspaper does not show on the clipping, and the back has no useful information. From the dates in the article, this was published in October 1939.

The "Kilgore Highway" is a little puzzling, but Kilgore and Palestine are both in East Texas.

I will be happy to send this to any descendants of this family who contact me by email or by posting here.

A. J. Pate
Houston, Texas

I apologize for not identifying myself in my previous post. I just noticed that you are in Fort Worth. I am in Carrollton, and if you are still working on the Ledbetter lineage, I can at least fill you in on the children, grandchildren, etc., of Mary Alma's brother, William Michael (b. 25 Dec. 1860; d. 10 Dec. 1950, Weslaco, Hidalgo County, Texas).

Carolyn Ledbetter Williams
Carrollton, TX

Alma Ledbetter Kerlin was my father's aunt. I started researching the family several years ago and found a lot of information. I dropped it due to business and family commitments (my husband was in poor health, and died just over two years ago), and I'm now trying to decide whether to get back into it again. I will pull the information I have together and will be glad to give you copies of what I have. Let me know how I can get it to you.
