Hello John,
My Ledford line comes down out of North Carolina and below is the info I have on the Ledfords I am from out of Clay County, North Carolina.

direct line of Ledford descends from John Ledford, JR. , son of john ledford

JOHN LEDFORD, JR. was born 1752 in Rowan County, North Carolina, or Montgomery, Virginia, and died April 1802 in Cumberland Gap, Kentucky when a tree fell on the wagon he and his wife were sleeping in. He was married to ELIZABETH UNKNOWN.

Children of JOHN LEDFORD and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN are:
1. JOSEPH LEDFORD.

2. OBEDIAH LEDFORD, married DEBORAH POLLY LYDIA.

3. SAMUEL LEDFORD, died in Kentucky.

4. FREDERICK C. LEDFORD, born about 1770, Roanoke River Valley, Augusta County, Virginia; died after 1860 in Clay County, North Carolina

5. THOMAS LEDFORD, born about 1771, Rowan County, North Carolina.

6. BETTY LEDFORD, born about 1773, Caraway Creek, Near Asheboro, Randolph County, North Carolina; died about 1853, Harlan County, Kentucky.

7. JOHN LEDFORD III, born about 1775, Burke County, North Carolina; died Clay County, North Carolina.

9. ALEXANDER LEDFORD, SR., born May 02, 1789, Asheboro, Randolph County, North Carolina; died April 24, 1873, Cranks Creek, Harlan County, Kentucky.

Many children of John Jr. and Elizabeth migrated into Kentucky. Most of them did so after their parents were killed in the Cumberland Gap accident. Frederick C. Ledford stayed and took care of the Randolph County, North Carolina family home. and in all aspect raised his family there.

My line of Ledford descends from frederick c. ledford , son of JOHN LEDFORD, JR.

FREDERICK C. LEDFORD was born About 1770 in Roanoke River Valley, Augusta County, Virginia, and died After 1860 in Clay County, North Carolina. Name of wife of Frederick C. Ledford is unknown. In the 1790 census he is listed head of the household in what is now Randolph County, North Carolina. In 1802 he moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina, where he was in the 1810 census with his wife, four sons and three daughters. In 1820 he was living near peter G. Ledford , Sr. in Burke County, North Carolina. By 1830 Frederick was the last of the Ledfords living in Burke County and was in Macon County, North Carolina in 1840. In 1850 he is listed as 80 years old and living with his only know for sure son, David Ledford Sr.

Only known Child of FREDERICK C. LEDFORD is:
1.DAVID LEDFORD, SR., born 1797, Randolph County, North Carolina; died after 1860, in Clay County, North Carolina.

direct line of Ledford descends from david ledford, sr. son of FREDERICK C. LEDFORD

DAVID LEDFORD, SR. was born 1797 in Randolph County, North Carolina. He married a woman named Jane . Last name unknown. Jane was born in 1797 in Iredell County, North Carolina. They were both living in 1880 and must of died sometime after that. It is not known where they were buried , but one can assume they are buried in Ledford Chapel Cemetery in unmarked graves.

Children of DAVID LEDFORD and JANE BARNES are:
1. JASON LEDFORD, born 1828, Jackson County, North Carolina; died August 18, 1882, Clay County, North Carolina. Jason married Mary Ledford about 1848. She was born about 1832.

DAVID LEDFORD , JR. was born 1833 in Macon County, North Carolina, and died 1864. He married
NANCY DULCENA SABINA HICKS about 1851. Dulcena was born about 1834, daughter of Steven Hicks and Mary “Maria” Ledford. Mary being the daughter of Eli Ledford, son of Peter G. Ledford.. David and his brother Center both joined the 7th Battalion North Carolina Calvary in 1862 or 63. They were transferred August 3, 1863 into the 65th Regiment, North Carolina Troops (6th Regiment N.C. Calvary). On the Sept.-Dec. Muster Roll they are both listed as absent, with the remark: deserted and dropped from the roll. Center later joined another Confederate unit. David was caught for desertion in East Tennessee and there hung or shot. Dulcena and her son David LaRanza who was around 8 or 9 at the time, took a team of oxen to Tennessee and retrieved the body. They brought it back to Clay County and buried him in Ledford Chapel Cemetery. Dulcena apparently was a Union sympathizer, and was said to at times carry messages sewn into the hem of her dress to take to the union camps. If she was stopped and questioned by Confederates, she would tell them she was out looking for a stray cow. She was suspected just the same, and at times Confederate soldiers would come around and try to get a confession out of her that she was spying for the Union Army.. They would pour out all of her families’ stored food supplies onto the floor or ground and mix it with dirt to ruin it. Dulcena died sometime after 1880 and is also buried at Ledford Chapel Cemetery in Hayesville, North Carolina.
