Hi,

This is an old post, but hoping it still works. Maja Catrina Johansdotter -- Swan John's first wife was my great-great aunt, her sister Anna Stina was my great grandmother. She was known as "Aunty Leeburg" I would love to get copies of anything you might have.

Thank you,

Carol
carolgmitchell@bellsouth.net

Thank you. The surname is very similar, but I think unrelated. In Sweden my Grandfather's surname was Gustafsson, his father was Gusaf Ericksson. His older brother arrived in the US in 1889, as O. Kjell (soldiers name), then in 1895 his surname is Leedberg when he was married. Here is a link to our family genenalogy website on Rootsweb. http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~leedberg/page1.htm

Have you searched your Leeburg's in records in Sweden?

Diane Leedberg Laferriere

This clipping was a part of stuff that my mom had put in a scrapbook. My mother is the Wila Leeburg in the article. Her parents were Axel and Jessie Crim Leeburg. I posted the article after I found it because I know who most of the people are, but, for example, I have no idea who the Ranstroms are - and my mom can't answer that either! Probably the name in Sweden was Liedburg, but everything, census, wills, marraige certificates, family Bibles, etc. spells the name Leeburg.

I don't check message boards very often, so I'm sorry this reply took so long. I would like information about his life in Sweden. Do you know who Rollie is? My aunt gave me some information that Rollie had sent her. Apparently he has someone doing research in Sweden and it looks promising. Will you keep me posted if you learn anything about his life before coming to the United States? I will check message boards more often or you can e-mail me direct - dlhaskins@nckcn.com. Where do you live? I live in Kansas.

I saw your posting of Swan John Leeburg and his first wife Mary. I believe Mary may be related to me. I have a story of an "Auntie Leeburg" who was one of the first women to be granted a divorce in Hutchinson. Do you have any other information, such as her maiden name?

Much Appreciated,

Carol Campbell

Linda,

To be honest, I'm not sure how the relationship goes. There is a family story passed on about "Auntie" Leeburg who was granted a divorce in Kansas(Hutchinson area) which made her a sort of roll model in the family. It was told that she was feisty, and lived in the country. Another part of the story relates an encounter she had with an Indian hiding in her haystack. My family in Hutchinson is Swedish on my grandmother's side so I'm fairly sure that is where the relationship would be. Hurty is the last name. I know that is not alot to go on, but sure makes for an interesting mystery!

Carol

I am Swan John Leeburg's great, great grandson. I'm not sure if you're looking for info. about him before he came to the U.S. (of which I have little to none) or after. If the latter is the case, I may be able to help. His portrait still hangs in my parents' guest room, and his grandson, Lee (age 95) is still alive and well.

I have quite a bit of information on Swan John - he was my great-grandfather. His first wife was Mary. They were married in Sweden - then went to Illinois - then to Hutchinson, Ks. She divorced him (I have a copy of the divorce papers) and he went back to Sweden to find another wife. His pick was Hannah Louise Halberg, but her parents said she was too young. When she reached a proper age she came to the U.S. all by herself to marry Swan.(My mother [88]remembers Hannah very well)
Swan John Hannah's children:Gunner, Axel (my grandfather), Ella, Lillie, and Vic.
I have lots of copies of letters from family members with histories. Let me know if you want more.

Are you Jessica Rae and you have two sisters? If yes, the Leeburg gedcom has you and your family in it, but there are no birthdates with your family. Would you be willing to share those so that birthdates can be a part of your family's file? I told my mother yesterday that the Leeburg Message
Board had a message from you. (she doesn't understand E-mail at all) My mother will be ninety next month and remembers Gunnar and Zoe very well. She thought that she also taught your grandfather Don in school at Wilmington, but she can't remember for sure!
I went to Hutchinson late last summer and met relatives of Mary's. They told me that her maiden name was Johnson, but of course, her parents remained in Sweden so perhaps that's not the way it was spelled. She & S.J. were married in the Kingdon of Sweden, January 1, 1866. I believe she was buried in Hutch. I have a copy of an interesting newspaper article from the Hutchinson Herald January 18, 1931 about Mrs. S.J. Leeburg. Are you related through their son John?

My great-great grandfather was Albert John Leburg (they shortened the name from Leeburg) he was born 4/18/1846 in New York. I am trying to find any info I can. His wife was Josephine Peterson whose parents Deloss Anna were from Sweden. I know the chances are slim that this is any kin to your family but it is the first time I have spotted anything close. I remember my mom saying that the LeBurg's were also from Sweden the name change occurred when they came to the US. Thanks. Karen
