Hello Jake! It was good to hear from you. It has been a long while since anyone has responded to my desperate pleas for help! It all seems to be a great mystery. Correct me if I'm wrong but , LEKAN is not an abundant surname. Yet everywhere I turn seems to be a deadend. All I have to work with are a few alien registration letters and some UMWA paperwork. I have managed to track down a minimal amount of solid facts. When my grandfather came to West Virginia it was the latter part of his life. I have no idea where he came from (within the US), what family members were in the States, if any, not a clue? Of course, there are stories hashed around the family but, nothing I can confirm. He was said to have family "up north". Are you trying to regather the info lost from the crash? I'd love to talk again.
~Stacey

Hi there!Do you think that it is possible that our names are connected?I trace mine back to August 1600 in London. Most of my ancestors were lightermen on the River Thames. They primarily lived in Wapping,Shadwell and Bermondsey. The oldest ancestor was mentioned in a Huguenot archive in 1600,in Southwark. It is likely that they were Flemish immigrants.
James

John Jacob Legan

I'm searching for information on John Jacob Legan. He was born about 1826 in Kentucky and died 26 November 1877 in Clark County, Missouri. He married Margaret Miller about 1848. They had 5 children: Johnny, Mary E., Sarah Catherine, Phoebe Ann and Dolly.
John Jacob, Margaret and Johnny are listed in the 1850 Census for Division No. 2, Oldham Co., Kentucky. John and Margaret are buried in the Old Burying Ground at Prarie Church in Clark County, Missouri. I have nothing on John and Margaret between 1850 and their deaths.

I would greatly appreciate any information!

"Jack" LEGAN was shot and killed during a robbery while he was delivering papers for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, March 3, 1938. I saw an article in the CPD which probably ran March 4, 1938. If you have not seen it, I am sure it is in the CPD archives.

Joyce
Jlknoch@aol.com

Frank Lekan, born January 1, 1888

I am trying to find information about my grandfather Frank Lekan. In my researching I have found many times Frank Legan. My family knows very little about his past or ancestors. Most of the information I do have I can't verify. He was born January 1, 1888 in Preserje, Austria (now Slovenia). He was said to have two older sisters, Mary and Frances, and His father and mother's names, Joseph and Josephine? Frank Lekan has three children Mary, Frank, and Elizabeth, and He was Catholic, I know this for fact. Many of the names and facts I have read in the Legan message board lead me to believe Frank Lekan and Frank Legan could be one in the same. Please, if anyone could help me determine if Lekan and Legan are related in anyway, I would greatly appreciate it!

I too am just now starting some research and there seems like a possibility they may have been related.

Stacey,
Hi! I am of the Cleveland Lekans heritage. I have traced my grandmother coming over around 1911 from Slovenia. Her husband (my grandfather) was already here as many of the Slovene families did, later sending for their wives and kids. My relatives settled on the east-side. It seems to me that I was told of an Uncle Frank, but I know little about him. Grampa's name was Jahn (Americanized to John) which is also confusing because I was able to trace the marriage of a John Lekan in Cleveland to a lady of the Peskar family (my Gramma was Peskar) but his bride had a different first name (escapes me). My understanding is that our name was Americanized to Lekan from Kralicek (pronounced Kray-lee-chek) I had all that info in my old hard drive which crashed of course.
Drop me an e-mail,,, Edward P. "Jake" Lekan

I am sure he came over with his brother JOHN (?), who may have returned to Jugoslavia. I know Jacob died 1973, he had 4 children-Jack, Joseph, Mary, Anthony, his wife was Julia Keleman. Jack and Joseph died before him.
I do not know if there any children for Jack and Joseph, one of them was killed in an explosion while delivering paper to store.
I think!
