My great great grandfather was James Leggett born in about 1823 in Waterford Ireland. He was married to Sarah . he was a glass cutter in Birmingham England. They had several children ,their son John was the father of my grandmother Amy (7.1.1885). I would love to know about James' origins in Ireland if you have any information.

Your story sounded interesting, so I did some digging and found what I think is your line in various records.
A number of online sources give names and marriage dates for the wives. These may or may not be accurate -- none of the items I saw listed any supporting documentation.
The 1870 census looks good for Martha Joanna Hager as wife of Albert Leggett.
For the wife of Ernest Elmer Leggett, we have the 1930 census showing she had a second husband George Murch and the death index giving her mother's maiden name as Withrow.

One possible candidate for Stella May's family in 1880 Stafford KS
(William, Cyntha, Stella Wall)

Couldn't find anything to definitely connect Albert Leggett to any particular Confederate prisoner.

Not sure how much more can be found, but these records should confirm a lot of what you've heard.

--------------------------
Oregon Death Index
--------------------------
Leggett, Jr, Ernest Warren
26 Jan 1950 - 26 Mar 1997
Died in Klamath County
Spouse: Shirle

Leggett, Sr, Ernest Warren
1 Dec 1909 - 24 Jan 1997
Died in Klamath County
Spouse: Doroth

--------------------------
California Death Index
--------------------------
Murch, Stella M.
20 Dec 1879 - 17 Sep 1966
Born Kansas; Died Butte County
Mothers' maiden name: Withrow

Murch, George Burdette
17 Oct 1879 - 4 Mar 1948
Born Maine; Died Butte County
Mother's maiden name: Schnartz

--------------------------
findagrave.com
--------------------------
Oregon, Klamath, Bonanza, Bonanza Memorial Park
Liggett, Dorothy Flescher 12 Feb 1908 - 26 Oct 1999
Liggett, Ernest W.
Leggett - Liggett Civil War Connection

I don't have any other stories, connections, or knowledge about my family tree except this. I have been told this story since I was a kid:

In the Civil War, My great, great, great grandfather had the last name Liggett. He was caught by the North and put into a POW camp. After the war was over, word had come to the POW camp that southern soldiers were being hung when they got home instead of being welcomed back.
The story goes that my G.G.G. Grandfather didn't want to end up dead when he got home, and he had become friends with some of the northern soldiers. So, they told him if he wanted to stay up north, he needed to change his name.
So He changed it to LEGGETT, and they allowed him to stay.

As far as the rest of my family, I don't have any other knowledge about them. My Grandfather, Ernest Warren Leggett, was a logger and traveled all over the North West when my father was a young boy. I heard they moved over 18 times before he was 12 years old. My Grandfather went by the nick-name "Shorty" as he was rather short (5'4").

I grew up in Klamath Falls, Oregon - and that is where my grandfather and father had finally settled down.

If you know anything about my family - please contact me. Thanks!

Re: CHARLEY CARROLL LEGGETT, THOMAS FRANKLIN LEGGETT

There is a Wily Leggett on the 1840 census from Randolph Co, GA. and a Wiley T. Leggett appears on the Randolph Co. Early Deeds Index for 1831-1839. With him are Jeremiah, John, John D., Penelope and T.F. (Thomas?) Leggett. Researcher Jeff Armstrong has asserted that Wiley, John D. and Thomas were likely brothers. Also, in the Randolph Co. Early Deeds Books for 1832, Penelope Leggett is recorded as guardian for Jeremiah Leggett's orphans, and Mr. Armstrong speculates that she was their mother. One of the witnesses for the sale of land in that entry was John Leggett, possibly Jeremiah's brother.

Earlier, on the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery, Jeremiah Liggett's orphans are shown as winners of land in Randolph Co. It seems reasonable to assume it was this land that they sold in 1832. Also, at the time of the lottery, they lived in Henry Co. Later, John D. Leggett appears on the Marriage Records from Henry Co., where he wed Eliza Hicks on Oct. 3, 1833. By 1850 they had moved to Barbour Co, Alabama, and John D. appears on land records from that county, and later from Bienville Parish, LA, 1860. It is known that James Knox Polk (JKP) Leggett enlisted in the Confederate Army from Bienville Parish, and also that John D. had a son James, b. abt. 1845, GA, making him the same age as JKP.

Getting back to Wiley, he is found on the 1860 census from Bossier Parish, LA, the 1870 census from Winn Parish, and the 1880 census from neighboring Grant Parish, where he was listed as William S. Leggett. His occupation was preacher, and with him were his second wife Ledora (Lyddora, Liddora, Lida) and the youngest of his many children. It is also important to note he had a daughter Mary, b. about 1847-48 GA, coinciding with the birth date for JKP Leggett's wife, Mary Leggett. On early census records her birth place is listed as Alabama, but on the 1930 census from Grayson Co, TX, she appears with her son James, and her birth place is then shown as Georgia. Moreover, there is a family story, said to have come from Mary herself, about how she travelled at the age of ten in a covered wagon to Louisiana with her family. And she said her father was a missionary preacher. In her obituary, it states that she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Leggett, but we don't know who supplied that information. Could it be in error? Was Wiley actually her father? Was JKP actually the SON of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Leggett? Questions and more questions! If anyone can offer proof either way, I'd love to hear from you. lynda@jensen.net

Hello. I have a small, old picture of members of a HUTCHINSON family from the farm in Winchester, MA. It is dated 1931, and written on it is Miss Mary LEGGETT, Ridgwood, NJ.

The lady appears to be in her 30's. I was wondering if anyone knew who she was.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(I am descended from the HUTCHINSON families who lived on this farm. The farm existed from 1720's to 1950's.)

(The HUTCHINSON families were directly related to the CROSBY Farm which was just down the street from it, but in Arlington, MA)

Re: GABRIEL LEGGETT, NEW YORK 1661

Sorry, but I have nothing more than what is posted, which says Hezekiah's son Gabriel I was born 1745. Your supposition seems probable. Gabriel was a relatively rare name, even back then, apparently, as we know from all the Gabriel Leggetts in our line at the time, and back to England. Your Gabriel II born 1782, then Gabriel III in 1811, you just need the proof. Sorry I don't have that.

Early Settlers was published only in an edition of 100 copies. I don't even have an original, just a photocopy of one from the Boston Public Library. I have posted all of the few references to the Ferguson line on my website:

MARTHA3 LEGGETT (Gabriel2, Gabriel1), born -------; died -------; married -------, Hezekiah Forgason (or Furgurson), born -------; died -------; son of John Forgason and his wife, Anne.

Children (no record of their children has been found).

In the will of John Forgason, dated Sept. 19, 1733, proved Dec. 21, 1733, he mentions his wife Anne, son Hezekiah, under age, son Nehemiah, daughter Sarah, and other daughters unamed.
...

The will of Gabriel2 Leggett, dated June 25, 1781, proved May 2, 1786, in which he styles himself "Gabriel Leggett late of Westchester, but now of the West Patent of North Castle, Westchester Co.," names sons Thomas and James, daughters Mary Archer (wife of John Archer, of Winterhill), Martha Forgason, husband Hezekiah; Phebe Meiers, husband Isaac; Elizabeth and Catherine. The executors are sons Thomas and James and "son-in-law, James Archer" (this is a miswriting in the will for "John," as in the record of the administration, his name is given as John Archer, and Mary Leggett, daughter of Gabriel2, married John Archer of Winterhill, son of John Archer of Fordham).

Of course, I got the list of children from another source, also posted:

ID: I109612815
Name: Martha LEGGETT
Given Name: Martha
Surname: Leggett
Sex: F
Birth: 1725 in Westchester County,New York
Death: 13 Oct 1789 in Orange County,New York
Change Date: 4 Feb 2002

Father: Gabriel LEGGETT b: 1698 in West Farms,Westchester County,New York
Mother: Bridget WILLIAMS

Marriage 1 Hezekiah FERGUSON b: 1721 in West Farms,Westchester County,New York
Note: _STATMARRIED
Children
Gabriel FORGASON (FERGUSON) b: 31 Mar 1745 in Westchester County,New York
Thomas FORGASON (FERGUSON) b: 17 Jun 1747 in Westchester County,New York
Martha FERGUSON b: 17 Jul 1750 in Westchester County,New York
Bridget FORGASON (FERGUSON) b: 20 Jun 1754 in Westchester County,New York
Anne FORGASON (FERGUSON) b: 20 Jul 1756 in West Farms,Westchester County,New York
John FORGISON (FERGUSON) b: 25 Dec 1758 in Westchester County,New York
Mary FORGASON (FERGUSON) b: 17 May 1761 in Westchester County,New York
Basil FORGASON (FERGUSON) b: 11 Oct 1763 in Westchester County,New York
Sarah FORGASON (FERGUSON) b: 11 Dec 1765 in Westchester County,New York
Peter FORGASON (FERGUSON) b: 10 Aug 1768 in Westchester County,New York

From what I have found so far, Rev. Wiley S. Leggett and his first wife Susan lived in Early County, Georgia around 1850. Later he lived in Bossier Parish, Louisiana with second wife Lyddora. (Susan died in 1851.) There is a post from back in 2002 that goes into quite a bit of detail about Wiley. You can find it on the Leggett Marriages board under heading: LolaBMcCann.

Mary was born in AL, approx. 1849, and was probably half Cherokee. Her daughter Bessie Mae (my grandmother) was one-quarter Cherokee according to my dad. I wonder if Mary could be related to your part Cherokee ancestors. Can you help?

He lived in Early County, Georgia, c. 1850s, migrated to Louisiana. He was married twice and had quite a few children. He is thought to be the father of either JKP Leggett or his wife Mary Leggett.
David & Thomas Leggett of Georgia

Have reason to believe David Leggett is the father of my ggg grandmother, Nancy and that he had another daughter named Huldah -- both born about 1818-1820 and both married 1836 in Monroe County, Ga. Any info about this family would be greatly appreciated. I have a great photo of Nancy about 1895 with her daughters and grandson -- posed studio quality.

Hello Cousin Kate,

My name is Claudia Harrell. I am the daughter of Geneva Leggett Harrell, who was sister to Gay (Williams), Jack, Clarence (aka Gene or Buddy), Mary Ann (Bell), and Mildred (Pendergrass) Leggett. Barbara Leggett is my first cousin, so I know positively we are cousins. Our family completely lost touch with the McGowan's after mother died in 1981. I am trying to work on some family history from her side of the family and would be interested in sharing any information possible with you. I found a short Leggett trail in the Greenville area via the Census.
I'd love to hear from you!
Claudia

Where did Wiley Leggett live? I think almost all the Leggetts in the USA came through Northeastern NC, perhaps starting as early as the late 1600s -- two brothers came over. Many were ministers, as were my grandfather (George Daniel Leggett) and great grandfather (Bythial Leggett). Jeremiah Leggett (1760-1839) was one of the founders of the Disciples of Christ churches in Beaufort and Pitt counties, NC. They also were prone to marry cousins. My father's two sisters (Elva and Lillian) married two brothers (Roland and Ebenezer) who were their first cousins. All were Bertie County NC Leggetts.
