Greetings-

My grandmother was named "Impi M. Lehto", however, I have found that there have been more than just one "Impi M. Lehto" that immigrated from Finland. I am curious if you have information regarding Ms. Lehto's husband and/or children. The "Impi M. Lehto" who was my grandmother immigrated to America in approximately 1921 and possibly she lived in Michigan in the 1920's.
I would appreciate any info you could provide--it would be nice if this was my grandmother, but there is always the possibility that it may not be.

Hello!

I think it is quite possible that my grandmother "Impi M. Lehto" could be related to both of us. She did live in the UP of Michigan around the time frame you mentioned and she was born around 1896. She married my grandfather Matti and bore at least two children that I am aware of. She also had a child from Finland that immigrated a number of years after she did.

I did not have the opportunity to know my grandparents, however I do have "some" information regarding my relatives and would be happy to share it with you if this is possible match.

I look forward to hearing from you, even if this is not a match. If it isn't a match, I wish you luck in finding out information regarding your Lehto relatives.

Respectfully-DIANEMANCINI6

I'm looking for my mothers grandfather Edvard (or Edward?) Lehto, whow left Finland and headed America as immigrant between 1913-1915. Hes goal was to make money and then invite the rest family to America. After leaving Finland, he sent a postcard from England and told that he is still going to America. That is the last message about him. My mother told, that after that message, my grandmother was decades neurotic about phonecalls and sound of ringing doorbell. Rest of her life, my grandmother was waiting for his dad to come back. My grandmother died last winter...

I did visit the Ellis Island and faced a problem with the database. There is some Edvard Lehtos in those immigrant databases, but both them has arrived America about 10 years too early... There is one Edvard Lahti, who arrived America 1913 and was 22 years old.. He could fit in the image, but the surename is wrong. Could there be an error?

In 1905 Edvard changed his surename from Lötjönen to Lehto, but this doesn't matter, i think.

Is there any database in England like this? We're sure that Edvard reached the shore of Englad because of the postcard, but what happened for him after this? Why man, whose goal was to reach America leave in Europe and keep silent? Has he died accidentally?

If you know any Edvard Lehtos, please reply. I want to know!

Hi, Tim,
Josh Lehto has done extensive research into the Lehto (Pitkenen) family. Go to Ancestry.com; search Ancestry World Tree with the name of Milton Arnold Lehto. There are 2 family histories. Both have index, decendency charts and gedcom download files. Josh's family history is the one listing Battle Ground, WA as Milton's birthplace. I haven't been in touch with Josh in years but his e-mail may still be good. If you have any problems, get back to me.

By the way, by any chance do you have a "Matson" family living in Rosburg, Washington? There was a Matson family on a farm close to my grandparents, Jokela, and great aunt and uncle, Hoika.
Good luck,
Pam Weigel (pjwbsa@aol.com)

I don't know where they get off calling it easy to pronounce. ;)

There are lots of longer versions of Lehto (which means 'grove'): Lehtola (place of the grove), Lehtoniemi (grove peninsula), Lehtojarvi (grove lake), Lehtonen (son of Lehto)... There were hundreds of "Lehto-"placenames in Finland, and the Finns had this annoying habit of taking the name of whereever they lived (and changed it practically every generation).

And then there's mine: Pitka-Lammaslehto (The Pitka's of sheep grove)

Josh
Josh

I know I have a partial list somewhere but these are the only ones my mother can remember. As far as we know, Peter lived in Finland. Anne moved to Rosburg, WA and lived next door to my grandmother. She married a Hoika. Any names sound familiar?

Thank you for responding to my query. There has to be some connection. I'll bet your great-grandmother is the "aunt" (or maybe cousin) to my grandmother Kristina. Do you know if she had a rooming house or boarding house or just let rooms when she was in Astoria? Somewhere I have a few names of her siblings, but not all. My mother says Kristina had another brother, Peter, and a sister, Anne. As far as I know, Peter lived in Finland, but Anne married a Hoika and lived in Rosburg, WA next door to Kristina. I also have a picture of the Lehto family, in Finland, probably taken early 1900's.

The families of Karl and Väinö Lehto

I´m looking for the families of the brothers´ Karl (Kalle) and Väinö Lehto. They immigrated to the USA in the end of 19th century or in the very beginning of 20th century. Väinö might have changed his name like Kalle but I have no knowledge of the new name. Karl was married to Lillian Sembla, and Väinö´s wife was called Soffi. I know that Karl and Lillian had four children: Edith, Robert, John and Joyce. Väinö and Soffi had two daughters: Kerttu and Kareen. They lived in Michigan, and they even brought their mother Maria Lehto from Finland to live with them in the early 1900´s. Maria Lehto was the sister of my great grandmother Fiinu Lehto. Some of the following information I have is relatively unclear so if anyone can help me finding more about these relatives, me and my family are forever grateful.

I have a Juho Pekka (Peter?), Anna Liisa, & Aukusti - all siblings of a Briita (Kri)Stiina. Their father was Juho Abram (sometimes Apo) Pitka-Lammaslehto (sometimes Pitkanen) Anna Liisa married a Kalle Hoikka, and Briita was born (or christened) on 5/11/1882.

Sound good? I've got the whole tree uploaded to Ancestry.com as of yesterday. Searching for Milton Lehto (my grandfather) is the easiest way to find it (all of the other names involving hyphens or umlauts). You'll have to go up a few generations to get to Juho-Abram's father Johan-Henrik (I'm descended through Juho-Abram's brother August).

Josh

Holly, I was told the same. However, all of my grandfather's relatives who might have known have since passed away. My grandmother believes that it was something to the effect of Klekle, almost definitely not spelled like that. But phonetically close anyway. This doesn't even guarantee that if it was in fact my last name it was yours. Many families with different last names may have changed to Lehto, because it is short and fairly easy to pronounce. Good luck with your search!
