Hi. I am looking for a John M. Leib married to a Christana. Both born in Germany and lived in Pa, had a daughter Catherine In PA and 2 other daughters-Sophia and Louisa in Crawford County Ohio Would have been in Pa in about 1835.

I believe your John Leib is the son of Abraham Leib (1736-1814) and Anna Maria Kiesel. Your John and Elizabeth are buried in the Leib Burial Ground in Manheim Twp, as are Abraham Leib and Maria Leib, and two other sons of Abraham and Maria. The cemetery appears to be on land owned by Abraham and bequeathed to his son Christian (one of the other sons in the cemetery).

John inherited 123 acres in Leacock Twp from his father. I have not followed what happened to the land. Tracing John's land, and tying it to the 123 acres given to him in Abraham's will, should give you the proof you need.

I'm a friend of Edna, and helping her with her LEIB family. She doesn't have any Leib's in her database that married to a GRANT, and she says none of the names you listed are familiar. Her LEIB family is all in Lancaster and York Counties. Sorry that we're not able to help you.

William Columbus Winningham was the son of William L and Mary Adelia "Polly" leib.
William L died in late 1840 leaving no will.Have copies of Adelia request to court that Daniel Leib be named administrator of estate. Have copies of court inventories, sales of prioperty etc. Also document that lists Wm L heirs as widdow, choldren Adeline, Hannah,Columbus and Henry.
Will provide copies if you need them.

They had six children that I know of:

My great grandparents Fred and Julia LEIB had seven children that I know of:
1. Caroline LEIB (b-1873) married Johann BRODT. They had eight children.
2. Katherine LEIB (b-1875) married Philip WALTER. They had eight children
3. Martin LEIB (b-1879) married Eugene HODEL. They had four children.
4. Johann LEIB (b- 1883) married Christina WOLFE.
These are my paternal grandparents. (They had twelve children)
5. Karl LEIB (b-1885) married Karoline STANNI WOLF and had three children. Karl's second wife was Elizabeth EDINGER and together they had four children.
6. Hermina LEIB (b-1887) married Karl BAKER. They had five children.
7. Freidrich LEIB (b-1894)

I live in Weyburn Saskatchewan and have visited the areas you have listed including the cemeteries.

Hello I am trying to find my ggggrand mother Maria or Anna Maria Leib. She would have been born in the 1770's or 1780's. Very Possibly Manheim, Lancaster Co. Pa She married John Grant. She or he may have been married before or had children that died young. They lived in the Berks Co area of Pennsylvania. John and Maria Grant had 5 children that I know of. Hi, Lois-

In 1724 Ulrich LEIB appeared on the Friesenheim, Baden, Mennonite Census list as follows: "Ulrich LEIP has lived on the von Sickingen estate for three years, but does not pay the gracious master nor to the community. No wealth."

He was, no doubt, originally a Swiss Mennonite as was his relative Johannes LEIPP who also immigrated to PA in 1727.

The Leibs in my connection: 2 fought in Iowa regiments and 1 was a Captain in a Minnesota Regiment. The 2 Wells brothers, that married Leib sisters, fought with the Ohio 102nd regiment and their younger brother with the Ohio 120th. None really fared well. (disabilities). My gg-grandfather Miles Wells was killed on the Sultana ship disaster (he was married to Sarah Leib), and his younger brother Cyreneus was KIA while with the Ohio 120th. This WELLS family migrated to Wooster area of Ohio after being in Cortland County New York about 1815-1840. Brior to 1800 they were from the Albany New York.

The Leib marriages occured about 1850-1854 in Wayne County, Ohio. Elizabeth Leib married to Miles' twin brother, Giles, died before 1860.

Sarah Leib was first married in Ohio to a Theophilus Brenizer, who died at age 25, before she married Miles Wells. Mentioning this in case that surname comes up in anyone's records.

I've been following the latest exchange of emails on Leibs in Pennsylvania. This is the first time I've entered a discussion on Leibs in Pennsylvania.

I am a primary WELLS surname researcher. Two Wells brothers each married a Leib sister in the early 1850's in Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio.

Sarah and Elizabeth Leib's father was Benjamin Leib, born 30 Nov 1806, and married to Anna Smith (although listed sometimes as Nancy Schmidt). I recently found her headstone and she is listed as Anna Smith. Benjamin is listed, in his children's death certificates, as either born in Pennsylvania or Bavaria. I have a copy of an obituary which provides limited information but have provided it below.

These 2 Wells brothers and 3 Leib brothers fought in the Civil War and it is by their pension records I am able to get what I have on this Leib family.

The oldest known child was is Daniel Webster Leib born 24 May 1829 in Mt. Joy, Lancaster County. Although some of the family were listed as LEIBY, at least one brother has his civil war pension records manually changed to read LEIB. I've seen the name more often as Leib than any other alternate spelling.

This family migrated to Wayne County Ohio prior to 1850. I hope this information may help someone or better yet, help me. If anyone has information or would like additional information, please contact me.

d. 4 Sep 1872 in Monroe, Jasper County, Iowa. "Benjamin Leib, aged 65 years, 9 months and 4 days. Bro. Leib was converted to God a number of years ago under the preaching of Rev. J. P. Leib, at present a minister in the East Pa. Conference. He endeavored to lead a consistent and exemplary life, and a few moments before the spirit took its flight from the tenement of clay, he expressed an ardent desire to go home and see his Saviour who had sustained him through life. He leaves many friends who mourn his departure. Funeral services by the writer. C. H. EGGE." (Evangelical Messenger, 21 Nov 1872) An obituary in "the Evangelical Messenger, a large and influential religious German newspaper published at Cleveland, Ohio," refers to him "as a man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him, particularly by the church (the German Evangelical) with which for many years he was actively connected, on account of his unswerving integrity, generous impulses and constant endeavors to lead a pious and exemplary life."

Research Notes: Is Rev. J. P. Leib related? New York Times Published Sept 19, 1875 Rev. J. P. Leib, one of the pioneer ministers of the Evangelical Association (Albright Methodists) died September 6 in Pennsylvania, aged seventy two.

You are correct that two cousins Ulrich and Johannes LEIB arrived in Philadelphia on different ships in 1727 (The William and Sarah--Johannes-- and the Molly--Ulrich). Ulrich settled in Lancaster County and Johannes in York County.

I descend from BOTH LEIB families!

I had relatives named Leib, also immigrating from Bukovina in Austria (Satulmare and Badautz)in the late 1880's. The people that immigrated, at that time, moved to Saskatchewan, Canada, in the areas of Endenwold, Arat, Balgonie, Frankslake, Pilot Butte, Zehner etc. I note that in some of the information obtained there is a name Carl Gottal (Goettel)who married a Rosa (Leibel, Leib).

Miriam L. Cashman

Miriam L. (Leib) Cashman, 87, of New Oxford and formerly of East Berlin, died Thursday, April 26, 2007 at the Hanover Hospital.

Born Nov. 1, 1919 in Malta, Mont., she as the daughter of the late John G. and Grace (Spangler) Leib. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Glenn C. Cashman, who died Dec. 15, 2001.

Mrs. Cashman was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, East Berlin, where she taught Sunday school. She was a graduate of East Berlin High School and attended Beauty Culture School in York. Mrs. Cashman was then a beautician in East Berlin. She helped her husband open Cashman’s Hardware Store in East Berlin in 1946. Mrs. Cashman was a homemaker after helping her husband to start the hardware store. She was a member of the Eastern Star, where she was a past worthy matron. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was a dedicated bird watcher.

She is survived by three sons, Robert Cashman and Jack Cashman, both of East Berlin, and Steve Cashman of Dover; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Gentzler of Hanover and Irma Jean Renaut of Spring Grove.

She was pre-deceased by one son, Tom Cashman and one brother, Harold Leib.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 29, at 2 p.m. from

Trinity Lutheran Church, West King Street, East Berlin with Pastor Ray Turnbaugh officiating. Burial will be in East Berlin Union Cemetery. A viewing will be held Saturday, April 28, from 6-8 p.m. at the Feiser Funeral Home Inc., 306 Harrisburg St., East Berlin, and on Sunday at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, PO Box 1016, East Berlin, PA 17316.

Living at 422 South Third St., Camden, N. J. in 1910-1920
Living in Cape May, N.J. in 1929
According to 1910 census they had (1) child, but is not listed with them.
Both of Wilburs' parents were born in Pennsylvania, but I do not know their names.

Theodore Leib was my grandfather. His parents were George B. and Jennie R. Don't have the dates of birth, but they are all listed on the 1910 census, along with siblings William Harry R. Ethel L. and George M. along with Theodore.

Am the daughter of Roderick H. Leib from Reading (Berks Co.)PA. His father was Theodore Leib; Theodore was born in the latter part of the 1800's. I believe Theodore had siblings: George, William, Harry R. Ethel and possibly Jennie.

I've managed to trace my ancestry back to Ulrich Leib in Lancaster/York Co., PA. At age 6 months I was adopted. I had 4 sisters - father Roderick Henry Leib. One of my sisters (who was also adopted out) was Carole Ann who was raised in Phila and died when she was 50 leaving 2 daughters who married and had children. I grew up in Philadelphia.

From all the reseach I've done, there were 2 main Leib families in York PA. My lineage is from Ulrich who arrived from Germany and started the one line. One of his decendants was Jesse Leib who was my gr gr grandfather. Jesse Leib's son George was my grandfather's father (Theodore R. Leib).

I'm ready to go forward and find family of the sons of George B. Leib and their offspring.

I've traced my family back to early 1820's (Jesse & Caroline Leib). My great grandparents were George and Jenny Leib, whose one son Theodore R. was my grandfather. Theodore had 2 children, Roderick Henry Leib & Dorothy. Roderick was my father. I have 4 sisters and 5 half-siblings from his line. Half-siblings live in TN.

Does anyone have info on Jesse & Caroline's parents? Is anyone out there related to me??

Candy, our dad was married to Margaret in Reading. He had 5 daughters: Gladys, Lois, Sandra, Linda and Carole Ann. Lois, Linda and Carole Ann were adopted out. Carole Ann is now deceased. We have some significant mental health issues in our family e.g. bipolar disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder. He also had 2 daughters by his "girlfriends".

Mary F.Leib daughter of Chrstian and Lydia Leib was born in
York County PA in 1855. The family moved to Iowa in 1868 and on to Kansas in 1870 where they homesteaded land.
She was listed in the 1870 census in Labette County, Kansas as 15 years old. The 1880 census did not list her with the family If this is a connection , I have info on her ancestors back several generations.

I don't know. My Anna Maria Leib married John Grant. They had 5 children that I know of. Jeremiah, Jacob, Maria, Charles, and my direct line Bartolett. They were all born in the early 1800's married and had children. They all stayed in the Berks Co. area except for Jeremiah who went to Union Co. I am not sure of where Jacob was. I don't have any information on my Anna Maria Leib's ancestry. Except that her father I believe was Peter Leib and her mother was Ursula Eva Geiger from Lancaster County. I would love to know!!!! My uncle was originally born in Germany as Raineir Leib on June 30, 1955 as 1/2 of a set of twins to Elisabethe LeiB in Michelstadt/Odenwald.
He was adopted from the orphanage on April 4, 1959 and left Germany on May 12, according to his passport information that my aunt found. My aunt would like to surprise my uncle (now Philip) with finding any information on his real family if possible. Any assistance would be helpful.

Does the will say whether Anna was a widow by the time he wrote his will in 1810? Does it mention where Anna and Philip Lanor lived? Or, are there any deeds or Orphans Court records that answer the above questions? Thank you for any help. Right now I'm just exploring a hunch.

Sorry. I got that last post wrong. It was William C. Winneham listed in the household of Charles Price on the 1850 Census. William C. Winningham was my great grandfather. Would love to learn where anyone got information on William L. Winningham being W.C.'s father. Please share. Thanks.

I have just learned that I am a descendant of Daniel Leib through William L. Winningham. Please share whatever notes you have which will provide verification of William L. Winningham's existence. I have found ONE census (1850) where he is listed as William L. Winneham in the household of his step-father, Charles Price. Thanks.
