Raymond Marion Leighton

Does anyone have any information about Raymond Marion Leighton, born about 1910 in Michigan. The Raymond Marion Leighton I am looking for spent some time in Oklahoma in the mid to late 1930's. He would have been located near Cement, OK - probably Lawton. Perhaps he was staioned at Ft. Sill Army Base. I don't have a whole lot more information than that....ANY information you would be willing to share would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

My Leightons are from just a little further south, nearer Lancaster, which isn't much help I'm afraid. However there is a UK website called GenesReunited which shows a few Leighton trees connected with Kendal. (There are 48 individual names between 1824 and 1915).

I have a subscription so I can ask about for you, if you have a few names or dates.
Regards
Mike

Hi,
I have in my tree a William Leighton, b abt 5 March 1791 at Kingoldrum, ANS, Scotland. His wife is Marjory aka Mary Webster. I have the names of 12 of their children from the IGI but not one named Charles. However a birth year of 1840/41 would fit in with the children's births. What are your sources for Charles/William & Mary?

Regards

David

They had 3 children in Scotland (Janet, Margaret and William) and came over to Australia in the late 30's early 40's with one of David's sisters and a David Blair son of Mary Elliot . They settled in Running Stream, near Rylstone, NSW and proceeded to have 4 more children (Mary, Martha, Robert and Elizabeth).David was a stonemason and built one of the churches in the area (which I believe may still stand, though abandoned) and opened a pub/hotel/inn? along the"Cobb & Co. Coach route called "The Rest and Be Thankful".All that is known is that David eventually sold (or lost) the inn to his son-in-law, and eventually shot himself (1st July 1886). He is buried in the Running Stream Cemetery.

Leighton David 1865 08 12 57 Wedderburn 321 100 Pres http://www.ozgenonline.com/aust_cemeteries/vic/loddon/wedder...
Mary ELLIOTT (AFN:23XV-XK) Pedigree
Born: 1802 Place: , Craigie, Ayr, Scotland
Died: 13 May 1892 Place: , Running Stream, Nsw, Australia
Buried: 15 May 1892 Place: Cemetery, Running Stream, Nsw, Australia
Married: 15 Aug 1831 Place: , Tarbolton, Ayr, Scotland
Father: Robert ELLIOTT (AFN:T2P6-15) Family
Mother: Janet WARDROP (AFN:T2P6-2B)
Children
1.
You probably have this information by now. Go to

http://home.comcast.net/~downeastgenealogy/

Under Addison census of 1850 and on record 128
you will see John Leighton and Eunice. Rebecca is listed
as 18 years old.

In addition, if you go to the LDS (Morman) web site
and search on Rebecca Leighton you will find she was
born June 9th, 1833 and married a Ephraim Whitney from
Jonesboro, in 1857. Her mother, Eunice, maiden name is
Wright. If you go to Jonesboro 1850 census, on the above referenced site, on line 22,
you will see Ephraim listed as 15 years old, born 1835.

Next on the LDS site under marriages, I do find a Rebecca
D. Leighton birth of 1840 who married a David Joy. It lists
Rebecca's parents as Nahum Hill Leighton and Phoebe Parker Drisko which accounts for Rebecca's middle name. He married again to an Abigal. The parents marriage is recorded under Addison marriages and was in 1828. I do see Nahum Leighton listed
on line 130 for Addison census, but no child by the name of
Rebecca. [I'm confused] !!! You can search Nahum on LDS site
and go back generations for him. You will also find David B. Joy on the LDS site.

Re: Leightons of Bagillt, North Wales

Hi Dennis, got your e-mail ok and am interested. Trouble with the Leightin family is that they seemed to be at least 90% of Bagillt population. The Elias Leighton I am lookoing for was born about 1828 in Bagillt and married Elizabeth Roberts born 1837 from Bagillt. They had about 6 or 7 children, but apart from that I am at a standstill. I vaguely recollect a William Leighton but can't find the paperwork with him on but if you can send me the list of Elias's siblings then I could look further, I think one of his brothers was called Enoch and he called one of his sons after him. tis branch of the family didn't arrive in Co. Durham until the later part of the 1800s, they lived in Sunderland for a number of years (where my mother was born) then moved to Seaham to work in the mines. I just can't seem to get beyond Elias so if you think your Elias is my Elias then I would appreciate your help. Where do you live now Dennis and what relation are you to Elias Leighton, he is my great-grandfather . John Elias his son was my grandfather. I am looking forward to hearing from you, regards, Val

I think I have found your Andrew on a ship's passage. Andrew 18, David 20, and Ann, age smeared, arrived together on the Patrick Henry in 1850. My research is on David, who, I believe, would be one of your "unknown sibling."

David Leighton and family settled in Luzerne Co., PA. and I have traced him and some his descendants through 1920. We believe his wife may have been Mary Healy, sister to Michael and John Healy, who originally lived in PA but moved to Minnesota about 1858.

Descendants of this Healy/Haley family are trying to find the family of their sister who married a Leighton in PA in the 1850's. I believe that to be David C. Leighton who travelled with your Andrew. All the ages and date of immigration for your Andrew coincide with the information on the ship passage list.

This may be of no interest to you, but I do have copies of the ship's passage I would be glad to share with you.

You may have heard something of this other Leighton family.
There are County Mayo ties in this family also.

Leightons from Ireland were rare, as most came from Scotland, but it has made it easier to trace them!
oj

I have just read your messagee re ~ Ralph Orren Leighton.
I am in direct line with Robert Leighton/Ann Ainsley (Rbt born about 1734 @ Sunderland Co/ Durham.
Ralph Orrens were about in 1755 as far as my records go
and most likely in the 1600's. There were some Ralph Orrens born in the 1930's and proably since as far as I know!
The family made a habit of using Wives maiden names as
childrens given names and by & large they were always preceded by the same given name i.e John McDougall, Joseph Nicholson, Richard Maltby & William Walker together with a few John James.
An awfull lot of them were Master Mariners hence them being found in shipping port situations like Sunderland, West Ham, Hull, Southampton, Portbury (Bristol), Berkeley (Glos)

I have many Ralph Orrens listed but I cannot find out where the name Orren came from - also I have found it so far impossible to trace the family farther back than about 1734
Regards
Bob Pickering

Hi all,
I'm looking for information on Arthur William Leighton, born around 1900 in England and married to Gladys May Bayliss(?) in Australia in the 1920s. I know that he served in the Aussie army in WWII (as part of the Queen's own?) and have heard that he died somewhere near Sydney some unknown time before 1990. Any information/ideas would be appreciated!

I have gone back as far as David Leighton who was born/christened in 1812. He married a Mary Elliot (Elliott) - who was chr. in c.1805 in Craigie by Kilmarnock - on 15 August 1831 in Tarbolton, Scotland.

David and his family were brought out to Australia by a Rev. Dr. Lang in the 1830's. He died in 1886 at Running Stream, NSW.

Now on David's death certificate it lists his parents as a David and Margaret Leighton (nee Jackson). Now here's the but... so far, everyone has had his father's name listed as William? I have had no luck what so ever in tracking down this elusive couple no matter which father's name I use. Has anyone out there managed to find them?

Leighton, Iowa

I am looking for someone who can fill me in on some of the details of William Leighton, who was the namesake of the town of Leighton, Iowa, in Mahaska County. He was a wealthy railroad investor who lived in Keokuk, Iowa. He was born in Dundee, Scotland 23 December 1813 and died in Keokuk (Lee County) Iowa in 1879. He married Elizabeth Carver who was born 11 February 1829 in Shelbyville, Kentucky, and who died in Keokuk in 1915. It appears they may have married in Kentucky and then moved to Iowa, but that is not certain.

Thanks for your help--Calvin

Julia Leighton Layton Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Hi,

My g-grandmother was Julia Leighton. Julia married William Benjamin Greenly. They had a son William George Greenly (my grandfather). Julia died in a fire when my grandfather was very young (he was born 1914) so we don't have much information on her at all. Family stories indicate she was raised in Kensington/Port Richmond area of Philadelphia. Other stories tell that an infant perished in the fire with her. I have seen mixed spellings of her maiden name. Some records have Leighton and a few have Layton. Can anyone out there connect? This is a mystery we would like to solve why some relatives are still alive.

Timothy or Elizabeth Leighton

I am looking for info on either Timothy or Elizabeth Leighton. Timothy was born in County Wicklow, Ireland around 1833 and Elizabeth, his sister was born around 1837. The emigrated I believe around 1841 and ended up in Indiana by way of Pennsylvania. Timothy worked for the railroad. Timothy had a son, Timothy, and daughters, Catherine, Eliziabeth, and Mary.

Elizabeth married James Reardon before 1858.
