James Leitch, Tarbert
Hi Derek,
It is indeed possible that we are related. Most of my research is centred on the period 1790-1901. My info starts to trail away after that. It does not extend too far into the twentieth century. There were a few families of Leitchs in Tarbert. The family of William B. Leitch the Sailmakers are probably not related to me but the rest probably are. I have gone some way to unravel my own direct line back through time and some of my gg grandfather's siblings but not them all. You could be descended from one of these and I would have no way of knowing at present. The best place to start is with the known and work your way back to the unknown and keep pushing back. You say that your grandfather's name was James Leitch. You said he died abt. 1987. Do you know how old he was when he died? Where did he die? Do you know his full name? What did he do for a living? Where abouts in Govan did he live? Do you have any addresses for where he stayed in Govan or Tarbert? You may already know enough to start working your way back. You do not need to know masses about someone to start your journey. Do you know where he was buried? His gravestone may hold some clues. His death cert., will give you his mother and father's name, James's age at death. That will give you his date of birth, may well give you his wife's name, Where he died. What he died of. It will also give you the informant at his death. It will also give you his occupation. When you have his age at death you can go searching for his birth cert., That will give you his place of birth and exact date of birth, his parent's marriage date and place of marriage. It may tell you where his parent's were living when he was born, and what his father was employed as when he was born. Once you have James's wife's name you can go searching for a marriage for a James Leitch and that woman. Once you have his parent's names and where they were living at the time you can track them down in the Census. You can then patch them into the wider family of Leitchs living and around Tarbert at the time. The available Census returns are from 1841-1901. It is even possible that you already have some family papers kicking about in your house that you can use to help fill out some details. Do you still have any relatives you can ask about family stuff? You may be surprised what they know. I have found that my brother and my sisters knew stuff that I had not inkling of. Hope that helps.
