WELSH & LEMASTERS

This is probably like searching for a needle in a haystack, but...
I'm assisting a prospective member with her DAR application.

We have Landora Virginia WELSH born 1875, Harrison or Monongalia County, West Virginia daughter of Squire Brice WELSH and Susan DIXON.

Landora became pregnant abt. November 1897 and had a son, Clyde Amos WELCH, when she was 23 years old and not married. Clyde was born 14 Jul 1898 in Wetzel County, West Virginia at the home of Landora's brother, Tilden WELSH.

Landora placed Clyde in an orphanage for two years, then retrieved him when she married Nicholas TALERICO.

Landora would never reveal the name of the father, only giving the surname of LEMASTER. She was an active member of the Victory Chapel Church.Another researcher believes the father could have been a Lee LEMASTER.

I hoping someone on the list might have a possible connection to the WELSH/WELCH surname.

Thanks,
Judy

Hello,

I am researching the surname of LeMasters in the Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland area.

My Great-Uncle, Harry Fenton LeMasters b. 23 May 1899 in Wetzel County, West Virginia d. 20 February 1981 in Allegany County, Maryland. Married an Irma Margaret Scritchfield. They married sometime between 1920-1930, haven't found a marriage record yet.

Irma's parents are William N. Scritchfield and Sarah C. Berkebile. Irma was born 16 October 1905 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania and died 18 November 2003 in Allegany County, Maryland.

She was one of 11 siblings according to her obituary and she was the last to die at the age of 98.

If anyone has any information on this particular Scritchfield family, especially photo's of Irma or her husband Harry, I would like to hear from you. I would be glad to share what I have collected so far.

Thanks in advance.

Melissa (LeMaster) Barker
Genealogist for Tennessee and Kentucky
E-mail: kaitysmom@peoplestel.net

Thomas Lemasters question

I"m looking at the updated genealogy book from 2000 i think.

Isaac Lemasters b abt 1728 d. feb 04, 1797 who married Nancy Ann Scot 1748

Has listed as his children Thomas Andrew Lemasters b. april 12, 1750, prince georges, co. md; d. 1836, crooked creek Mason co. WVA

and then another child

Thomas Lemasters with teh same dates but born in Charles co MD and d in tyler co WVA

Now my question are they twins? Does anyone have any clue.

Because when you go to look under who they married Thomas Andrew Lemasters married 3 different people Catherine Thornton, Miss Lewis, and Jenny Dyal

and then there is my Thomas lemasters who married Alieda Dallas

Dates of the children of Thomas Andrew Lemasters over lap with his wives. Was he married to all 3 women at the same time or is even my thomas lemasters the same thomas and he was married to 4 women at the same time.

So now that i'm even more confused and confused everyone else. I hope someone out there has information and can put this mystery to a rest for me.

micki

I have just started on this long journey. I am stuck already. I didn't have to go far.............

I am looking for any information about a Isaac Lemasters
who married a Sarah Ann Swaney on Dec. 14, 1854 in Calhoun, County Illinois. They were listed in the 1860 census for calhoun, county illinois and he was 45 years old then. She was listed as being 28 yrs.
So, his D.O.B. would be approx. 1815. and hers would be approx. 1832.
They had three sons who were listed in the census also.
My problem is I do not know anything about him prior to this. If you could help I would be eternally grateful.

Some answers to your questions.

Abraham's wife's name is unknown. No one (to my knowledge) has ever found any record of it. Even his will only refers to her as "my wife". Tradition has it as Elizabeth, but there is nothing to support that. That may have come from the fact that his plantation was called "Betty's Delight". But that was the name when he bought it.

Abraham gave the following deposition:

June 1720 - "At the request of John Lemaistre [7.] of Charles County, planter, the two following depositions were recorded this ninth day of March, 1720/1 - . . . Abraham Lemaistre the son of John and Sarah Lemaistre, aged eighty one years or thereabouts deposeth . . . that he was born in the Old Jerseys in the parish of Ste. Maries and further this deponent saith not. Sworn before me this twenty-seventh day of June, Anno Dom. 1720. John Fendall, Walter Story."
Source: Charles County, Md. Court and Land Records, Liber H No. 2, p. 415.

However, when I contacted a researcher in the Channel Islands, he said there were no records anywhere in the Islands that matched the deposition. He did say, however, there was a record that matched, but it was in Britney France. That record also stated that he went to the colonies and married a woman named Elizabeth.

I do not know where the name Claude came from, but if anyone had documented proof of that, I would like to know.

It has long been believed that the Lemaistres were Huguenots and left France because of the Inquisition. They went to various countries and that was the origin of various spellings, such as McMaster, DeMasters, etc. I don't know if there is any documentary evidence of that or not.
While not completely in response to this message, I seem to remember a recent message about a reunion of the family of Henry W. LeMaster of Olive Hill, KY (or thereabouts). If that is correct, I would appreciate someone knowledgeable of the event to contact me.

Hugh H.

My LeMasters line comes from OH and IN as well, specifically Jacob and Hannah (nee?) Lemasters who lived in OH, my line descending through their son Luman Walker LeMasters and his wife Nancy Young, who lived in OH and moved to Jay County, IN. If you will furnish names, perhaps we can help.

The Isle of Jersey is located in the Channel Islands about 14 miles off the coast of France although, according to the sources I have, they are considered part of the British Isles.
Lemaster(s) of E. Ketucky....Need Help !!

I am searching for any info on my ggrandmother, I am searching for any info on a Armilda 'Millie' Lemaster(s) bca 1894 in S. Viginia or Eastern Kentucky, lived in Drift, Floyd Co KY, d. 1960 in Marshall, Calhoun County Michigan. 2nd wife of Raleigh 'Roy' Sutherland of Floyd co., b. in Russell Co. VA, lived in Drift, KY. It's a real mystery for us. The obit for her son in the newspaper said 'Millie Amasters'. There are no Amasters that I am aware of. We have little to go on except the dates from the stone in the cemetary in Calhoun COunty, MI and the name of her husband. I am searching under a variety of names such as 'Melissa', Mildred, 'Amelia', etc. to try and find Millie. I think the last name is probably Lemaster or Lemasters. Don't see any Amasters in S. E. KentuckY?
the small cemetary in calhoun co. michigan has no written records, and the county didn't have a d.c. for her either. FLoyd co. had no marriage record for Millia dn Roy. I know she married and lived in Floyd Co. with Raleigh 'Roy' Sutherland until about '39 or '40 when they moved ot Michigan.....?
Raleigh A. "Roy" Sutherland and Millie had the following family:

iii. PAUL (#6605).
iv. WALKER (#6606).
v. MYRTLE (#6607).
vi. JIMMIE (#6608).
vii. ROBERT (#6609).
viii. COONEY (#6610). Cooney was a girl.
ix. (#6611).
It looks like you and I are related. I think we're "half" second cousins, if that makes sense. Charles Washington Lemasters was my father's father, although he never knew him. His parents divorced shortly after he was born. I understand that Charles Washington Lemasters started two more families. One of them must have been with Edith Greathouse?

I found some research done by someone else which would put your ancestry in a different order. Look at http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvwetzel/lemasters/.

I am just now trying to track down my father's side of the family. As best as I can tell, here's my lineage:

Debora Lee Lemasters
Wilbur Jay Lemaster/Kathryn Adele Current
Charles Washington Lemasters/Minnie Mae Williams
Jasper Newton Lemasters/Mary Charlotte Smith
Isaac Washington Lemasters/Rebecca Lemasters
Isaac Lemasters/Nancy Harris
Thomas Lemasters/Alidea Dallas
Isaac Lemasters/Nancy Ann Scott
Joseph Lemasters/Catherine Ward
Richard Lemasters/Martha Dennis
Abraham Lemasters (Lemaitre?)/?
John LeMasters (Lemaitre?)/?
Claude Lemaster (Lemaitre?)/?

I wondered if Abraham was a Huguenot?

Debbie Lemasters

Debbie...you have no idea how much you have helped me. I only hope after all this time you still will get this reply!

My great grandmother was Gladys Daisy LeMasters....I don't have alot of info about her family, but I did know her mothers maiden name was Huffman from the Social Security index. I remember hearing about some of her siblings, mainly Opal (I have a picture of her from about 1978 or so with my mom) and Katy, and hearing about West Virginia. Her birthdate was April 21, 1906, and she died in 1989. I would love to hear from you to pursue further!
Thank you but no this is not her, she would have been born around the 1885 area, she had a son named Marion Alexander, he apperently was born out of wed lock and I found him in the 1920 census living with grandparents surname Warner, and he was 11, then. Was told she died giving birth to twins, and we are not even sure if lemasters was maiden name or not, have looked under all three names and can not find her anywhere, family bible says,Marions father was a william alexander, but who knows . thank you, if you have anything that might be helpful we would appriciate it, Marion was my husbands grandfather, and we are trying to find the family and story, he died before my husband was born

we have been trying to find a Ruby LeMasters from Leon, Mason Co. West Virgina. around the 1900 era. The family bible says she had a son Marion Wooten Alexander,1909,out of wedlock to a William Henry Alexander, the 1920 census has Marion living with Augustus and Samatha Werner.Bible also says she died giving birth to twins, no info on death date and were buried except that the twins were buried with her. Also know birth date.
