Exilda married my my great grandmother's uncle, Pierre "Peter" Perigard. You will see Perigard spelled many different ways.

So true, I have 47 varients for this family's surname(s).

Peter was my great-X2 grandfather's brother. My GGGrandfather was Alexis Chevalier Perigard. Actually, before the Perigards moved from Quebec, their name last name was Chevalier dit Perigord, then Perrigord, and then finally Perigard or Peregard. There were many Perigards in Muskegon since the late 1870s. Sadly to say, I recently searched the Michigan death records and found that Peter Perigard committed suicide at the age of 40 I believe. I want to say it was sometime around 1900. He and Exilda and family were living in Marquette, Michigan at the time of his death. In fact, his mother, Domithilde, was also living with them when he died. I'd be happy to answer any questions about the Perigards.

Thank you for the offer to assist with the Perigords. Do you have the ancestry for this family yet? I originally thought that this was my line, but found that my ancestor was married to the widow of a Perigord. When he died shortly after his one son was born, the subriquet of 'Perigord' stuck to his son as his mother was still known as Madame Perigord. I helped Bernice Anderson of Ontonagon whose mother was a Penegor [the spelling followed by her line]. This Ontonagon line descends from the dit Chevalier line. Do you know that the original surname from France is Marquet? I have a copy of the work that Bernice did on the family.

Regards,

Roger Miller

Researching the Betters/Lemieux families in Clinton County can be confusing because there ar so many duplicate given names. I too am descended from a Napoleon (Paul) Lemieux (Betters). However his parents were Charles Lemieux and Marie Amable Paillant-Cayer.

I am not able to answer your question, but I have two items in my notes from St. Matthews Church in Black Brook that may be of interest to you. Jan. 10, 1887 Vital Lemieux, 59 died. Spouse: Appolina Labombard. July 31, 1892 Vital Betters born. Parents: John Betters & Angelina Labombard.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Jim

Thanks for the response. I think the surname was more than a bit misplaced. I found out his year that my ggg-grandmother Angelique was actually Angelique Gagnon (Gagnan). Angeligue and her husband Michel LeMieux aka Mitchell Betters married in St. Nicholas, Quebec Oct 23, 1821.

OK. The surname is Magnan. I looked up my records and both Gagnan and Magnan were used. Confusion, confusion. So I asked for some help with Drouin records. So here goes. Angeligue MAGNAN, is actually Marie Angeligue Magnan. She was born March 28, 1807 and baptised the next day, in St. Hyacinthe, Notre-Dame du Rosaire, Quebec. Her parents were Joseph Jean Magnan and Josette/Josephte(?) Cote. They were married August 3, 1801 in St. Hyacinthe. Now, Angelique and Michel Lemieux married Oct 23, 1821. That would make Angelique 14 yo. The LDS site lists her birth as abt 1802. But, hey, atleast now I have the correct info, in regards to the surname. You have it now too, if any questions arise from others. Thanks for responding to my thread.

Morgan

I think it is actually Gagnon (Gagnan). I have loads of records from when my uncle researched the family line, give me a couple of days to locate the info. Back in the 1970' my uncle gave alot of info, that included letters from LeMieux/ Betters lines, to a cousin. I guess he never thought anyone of the immediate family would show an interest in genealogy. This cousins daughter found some of this info among her mother' belongings, and sent me copies of what she had found. I had moved to Oregon from Virginia a couple of years ago and had not been able to locate my genealogy stuff until this Summer. I'm just now, slowly organizing, my various family lines. I want to say that there is info that uses Gagnon(nan). Just give me a couple of days to go through it all. BTW, who are you related to?

LOL. Sometimes it comes down to the original writter of the rec mishearing what was said or just having very bad hand writing like my brother, making it hard on us trying to decipher the writting.... Angeligue' parents were Joseph Jean Gagnon (Gagnan) and Marie Josephte Queret dit Latulippe.
Well, I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, but when you get a chance take a look at the marriage record I mentioned. It's on-line and free. I'm related to the Angeline Corrow who was the mother-in-law of Agnes Betters (Lemieux). I've also done quite a bit of research on the Mongeon family - Zoe Lemieux married a Mongeon. I have all sorts of connections to the French Canadians in Orleans County, Vermont so I've picked up information on many of these family branches. So my specific interests regarding the Lemieux/Betters family would be their connections to the Pratt (Dupras) and Mongeon families.

I think the Corrow information that you have is a bit misplaced, and it connects to the descendants of Oliver Lemieux (Betters) and and Julie Seguin (Sayant). They had a daughter Agnes who married Frank Ezeb Pratt on 1 Jun 1891 in Newport Vermont. Frank Ezeb Pratt was the son of Lester Pratt and Angeline Corrow. That is most likely where the Corrow connection comes from. Agnes and Frank had a daughter Caroline Isabella Pratt who married Wiliam Arendell.

Many of the Lemieux (Betters) records can be found in the Sacre Coeur de Jesus at Stanstead parish registers. I have:
Zoe Lemieux m. Louis Mongeon
Michel Lemieux m. Marie Anne Lemire
Sarah Lemieux m. Francois Isaie Nolette
Jean Baptiste Lemieux m. Marie Emelie Martel
Joseph Lemieux m. Sophie Lahaie
Oliver Lemieux m. Eulalie Sayant (Julie Seguin or Sawyer)

I might have more on this family, but not organized - they connect to various lines I follow so I have noted bits and piecs of information on them.
Hello,

I'm from Hawaii originally. We're here in BC, visiting my aunt. My father was Robert Betters, mother was Ruth Cole. Her husband was Howard Betters, a pharmacist?

I don't know much about geneology, but was just goofing off online and came to the email query you made two years ago.

I'd be really interested in learning our relationship, because I remember reading an article (photocopy given to me by relatives) in a Vermont newspaper (modern) about a Civil War letter written by Mitchell Betters (from Vermont), who had brothers Austin Betters and Jean-Baptiste Betters also fighting in the war. Mitchell Betters mentioned in his letter to "kiss Frankie for me". Frank Betters was his son, who made his way to Hawaii. I think he married a Mary? and they had a daughter, Mary Theresa, who also died in Hawaii. My father was a cousin of Mary Theresa. He made his way to Hawaii separately, where he married my mom (local) and here we are.

Anyway, make of this what you can. There are common names: Austin, Cole, Betters, Lemieux. A long time ago we were given some information about our family tree based on research done by some relatives pre-internet. I'd love an update.

My sister and brother are also here trying to grill my aunt on information on my father's childhood places (sask), but memories are getting dim.

Are we related? Thanks for any information!
Collette

Thank you for your message. There does not appear to be a connection - the EXILDA (sometimes mis-written as EVILDA) I see in the City Directories of 1900 to about 1930 is PREVOST. My grandmother (originally from Mooers Forks, NY) was a LEMIEUX. She married a PREVOST.

Many of the LEMIEUX family changed their name to BETTERS.

Joseph Lemieux is also my Great Great Grandfather. My info is the same as yours, except I have Davis as Lillian's last name and was told Pocketville, instead of Paquette. I have his parents as Horis and Clara Belle Suse, however have found no info on them. Who is your Great Grandparent? Josephine is my Great Grandmother. I was told Josephine went to a convent in Canada. Does anyone have any information on this?
