Thomas Leming married Sarah (Saltar/Cox?) - Monmouth County, New Jersey

Searching for information concerning the family of Thomas Leming & his wife, Sarah of Upper Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey - mid/late 1700s.

Due to several "Thomas Leming's" living in New Jersey at the same time, I refer to this Thomas as Thomas Leming "of Upper Freehold."

According to some researchers, Thomas Leming "of Upper Freehold" was born about 1718 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. In my opinion, this date may be a bit too early, considering Thomas and Sarah were (probably) married in the mid 1750s.

Thomas Leming, (also spelled Thomas Leaming), married "Sarah," sister of Thomas Saltar of Philadelphia. Many have shown Sarah's maiden name as "Saltar," or Salter. However, this is not certain. No marriage record has been located for Thomas & Sarah. Complicating matters is the fact that Thomas Saltar is well documented as having a step-brother named "John Cox." Thomas Saltar's parents, although uncertain, are believed to be Thomas Saltar "the Yeoman" and his wife, Rachel. After Thomas's (the Yeoman) death, his widow (Rachel) 'apparently' remarried to a John Coxe with whom she had several more children.

Because of this, and the fact that Thomas & Sarah's eldest children were born in the 1750s (i.e. marriage date), it is likely Sarah was born "Sarah Cox," and not "Sarah Saltar," but this is uncertain.

According to the will of Thomas Saltar (died 1790) of Philadelphia, dated 1785 (and codicil dated 1790), his sister, "Sarah Leaming" and her husband, "Thomas Leaming" were the parents of (at least) four children. Their names were:

1) Meribah Leming (ca. 1754?-aft. 1790) married Jacob Morris, 1772.
2) Rebecca Leming (died aft. 1790)
3) Sarah Leming (bef. 1773-died bet. 1785 & 1790)
4) Isaiah Leming (ca. 1762-bef. 1807) married Mary Salter - moved to North Carolina.

Exact order of birth is not known. All of these children, except Sarah, were living in 1790 (per Thomas Saltar's 1790 codicil).

In the will of Hannah Leming (1773), widow of Thomas Leming "of Shrewsbury," she bequeaths money to Sarah Leming, wife of Thomas Leming of "Upper Freehold." Hannah also bequeaths money to Meribah, Sarah, & Isaiah Leming - I'm not certain whether Rebecca was mentioned in the will. Their relationship to Hannah (Saltar?) Leming (widow) was not stated.

Because Thomas Saltar, in his 1785 will, mention his "brother-in-law," Thomas Leaming - and because his (Saltar) 1790 codicil does not mention Thomas Leaming, it is assumed Thomas Leaming ("of Upper Freehold") died sometime between those dates. Some internet sources show Thomas Leaming died July, 1786 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. I have been unable to verify this date. According to Thomas Saltar's will (1785), Thomas & Sarah Leaming were living with Thomas Saltar in Philadelphia (in 1785)

Sarah Leming (Leaming) was still living in May, 1790 when her brother, Thomas Saltar made his codicil to his will. I don't know when she died.

Thomas Leming's parentage is uncertain. However, some have listed him as a son of John Leming & Dinah Dewilde.

If anyone can provide additional information on this family, please contact me.

Jesse L.

Sorry Carol: I have not had the chance to follow Enos very much. l do know he enlisted with his brother Ransom Riley Leming in Rome, Ga. April 1862. They were apparentyly separated during the War as Ransom was captured at the Battle of Resaca during the Atlanta campaign and Enos continued on and I am almost sure surrendered at the end of the war with Joe Johnston in North Carolina.

I do know that he went West after the War I think to Arkansas, and then came back to Ga. a couple of times. it seems that his Mother Nancy always lived with him and Levi lived with Ransom. For some reason I believe Enos lived out his life in Arkansas and his buried there. You might check with Mary Crutcher whom you will find on the Leming family forum and Ancestry. I think she is descended from Enos.

Good Hunting

Larry Lemming

Yes, Yes, I am always interested in information on my ggg-grandfather Levi Leming. It might help you know that his marraige bond from 1828 showed him as Levi Lemmons. But Leming/Lemming has been used more than anything else for the last 150 years or so.
As to the Berry College connection, I show Levi as the overseer of the Berry Plantation In 1860. Don't know much about it or how long he was there. However the Plantation and the family wealth did survive the War of Northern Aggression (LOL}. Martha Berry died in 1942 after building an educational empire with the help of folks like Henry Ford, Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone who all visited the college on many occasions and were the original Financiers of the College.

Larry Lemming

Great to hear from a new source concerning "The Elusive Levi" I have found very little in the last few years concerning Levi but continue to try. As to your question concerning a Ruby Leming, the only one I ever knew was married to I.P. Lemming who died in the late 80's. Ruby passed away a few years later. I.P. Lemming was my father's first cousin so I doubt your Ruby connects to this. Wish I could help more, but stay in touch I have a great deal of info on the line from Levi forward but 100% nothing before 1805. Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Larry Lemming
I have been searching for a Ruby M. Leming who died in child birth or a couple of years later. Her marriage to Eli Joseph Branton was on record as 1897. Her son, Jospeh Monroe Branton, was my grandfather. I find Lemings on Census in the Chulio, Floyd CO, GA, but never any sign of Ruby except the Floyd county marriage register. There is a Ruby Leming on the 1930 census, but she is a child and my Ruby would have passed. Can you help? Also you said you heard Levi was from Holland..could that have been Black Dutch which can be related to Melungeon, African or Native American ancestory?

Carol, If you want to find Leming Family Forum, simply type it in on your search engine and wait. It wil come up and after you have looked those messages over you can then go to the other spellings of this unique name. To name a few, Lemmons, Levi's marraige bond shows his name as Lemmons, Then you have Lemming, Lemmings, Lemons, Limming, Liming, Lymeng . The name has been corrupted over the last two hundred years by census takers etc. You are welcome to e-mail me at larry88@comcast.net. Good Luck and God Bless.

Larry Lemming

Carol, Damey as you call her would have to be Levi's daughter Diddiamie {Can you belie ve that name. She was the oldest daughter I believe and was known to be a Corker.

I know very little about her but did see a recent posting on the "Leming Family Forum" She apparently had a niece who appropirated her name. I will ck. some records and Bush Arbor Cemetary and get bac with you . I am sorry to say I never followed her because of the problems in finding anything about Levi.

Best Wishes,
Larry Lemming

Levi LEMING

There's a family tree on One Tree at Ancestry that gives a birthdate for Levi Leming of January 29 (I think) 1805. Is that a date off his tombstone? It's the only time I've seen a specific date, and there's no contact name there.
Also, although you may already have this, Levi was living with his son Harrey D. and family in the 1880 census, age 75, in Livingston, Floyd County.

And, someone has to be descended from Harrey D.'s line. I have the names and some dates for his children... he was in Lamar County, Texas in 1900..... The two Leming brothers I asked about in a previous post were Harrey's sons, and married while they were in Texas. Thomas Gaines Lemings and his brother, Jesse B. Lemings.

If someone can verify what I have, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks,
Carlette
carlette@mail.com

Thomas Gaines Lemmings was born March 29, 1880 in Georgia, died April 10, 1943 in Seminole, Oklahoma. He was married to Ezra Vezey Wilson.

Jesse B. Lemmings was born April 13, 1884 in Georgia according to the 1900 census, Texas in a later one. He died March 21, 1964 in Seminole, Oklahoma. He was married to Eva Araminta Wilson.

The Wilson ladies were sisters, daughters of Robert Wilson and Mary Clementine Lewis. They were my great aunts.

The Lemmings men were brothers, sons of Harrey Decatur Lemmings and Sarah A. Pledger, along with seven other siblings. My information says that the parents of Harrey was Levi Leming and Nancy Hix. Nothing else.

If anyone has any further information on the Lemmings/Leming family, I'd appreciate your sharing with me.

Thanks,
Carlette
The Elusive Levi

Hi Roy,

I have been chasing Levi for many years. I personally think he assumed Leming/Lemmons as his name after some problem or crime. I have been told that he was from Holland. I have also been told that his wife Nancy was Indian and that he probably was also. They left E. Tenn. at the time of the Trail of Tears and ended up in Hu;ntsville Ala. Then in the early 1850's came to Rome, Ga. and opened a Ferry across the Coosa River. He died here in Rome, Ga. in 1886 and his oldest son Ransom Riley from whom I descend died here in 1896. I traced in a direct line from Levi to my own grandchildren. That's 8 generations and I a little bit about most of them, but nothing about Levi other than he was supposedly born in E. Tenn. in 1805 {No Proof} and that he married Nancy Arnsley Hicks {one of the top 3 indian names of that time} in 1828. The marraige bond was signed by the then Gov. Of Tennessee. Sam Houston. Never found a sister or brother, Father or Mother. The 1860 Census of Rome, Ga. shows him as an overseer of the Berry Plantation whose family started Berry College, now recognized as the largest Campus in the World. I have opinions but no proof . I don't think we will ever find where Levi came from. But I will keep trying.

Thanks, \
Larry Lemming

I believe the North Carolina Lemings came from John Lemings (Lyming) [1680] through his son, John. My Leming connections come from John Lyming through his son William. Most definitely as relations, but the ties go way back. If you would like a copy of my information, I would be happy to give it to you. Also, keep searching Ancestry Family Tree, they have lots and lots of info on the line of John Lyming's son, John, which I believe is where you fit in.

The original spelling of the name (1680) seems to be LYMING according to the few records available. At that time spelling was dependant on pronunciation which depended on the accent used. In New Jersey at that time there were many different "accents".. The second generation seems to use the spelling Lemming (John) and Limming (William) and Limming(Thomas). When the third generation began leaving for North Carolina, Tennessee and Pennsylvania the different branches settled on a favorite spelling. Those New Jersey Lemings probably descend from John Lemming/Dinah DeWilde and those that use Liming appear to be the descendants of Willialm Limming/Rachel Johnson line. All came from the John Lyming/Prudence Wainwright union.

Hi Juanita. The Rebecca Leming I know of was born about 1866. Who knows, there could still be some kind of connection between them. I'll keep you posted if I find anything.
Kristen

Phyllis, I didn't want you to think I had forgotten about you. I've been doing research here and there when I can. I have only found that Cora Crowder Leming was living with her father (as well as two children) in January of 1920. Do you have any further information such as Cora's mother's first and maiden name? Also, do you have any additional information on the family of Gilbert Leming? Brothers, sisters or parents would all help. I know you did give me his father's name.

I will continue to research these names for you.

Sincerely,

ReNae
