J. Pinkney Lemley, s/o Sylvester Lemley, m. Sarah Ellen McKinney

First let me thank the Lemley researchers who posted J. P.'s full name. Without it I would not have been able to unravel this part of the fabric of my family.

James Pinkney Lemley, also known as "Pink," married Sarah Ellen McKinney on March 4, 1875, in Shelby County, AL. Her name in the entry is listed as "McKinnie."

Sarah Ellen McKinney was the daughter of John P. and Mary Ann "Polly" Green McKinney. JPK born about 1811 in SC, MAGM born about 1822 in NC/SC. Probably NC. Ellen was born in AL about 1855 and died(? divorced?) between 1880 and 1885, probably in MS.

Here's where you will find her:

1850: JP McKinnie in Shelby County, AL

1860: Ellen is 5 and lives with parents in Bibb County, AL

1870: Ellen is 15 and lives with parents in Bibb County, AL

1875: Sarah E. McKinnie marries J. P. Lemley in Shelby County, AL

1880: Ellen is 25 and lives with husband I Pink Lemly, daughter Jennie and son Henry in Leflore County, MS. Dad lives around the corner listed as "K. P McKinney," 71, a mechanic. There may be several other family members there, too, but more research is needed.

1900: Pinky Lemley is in Carroll County, MS, with wife Mary and son 15, daughter 4. Ellen was in the household in 1880, is not in 1900, and Pink's son is 15. Hence the death/divorce dates of 1880 - 1885 for Ellen.

Thanks again to Lemley researchers who posted their info for me to find and use.

Happy hunting!

Hi Barb,
I too am a descendent of George Lemley and Catherine Yoho which makes your husband my cousin. My records stop at your husband's Clyde Lemley (with no dates, siblings or spouse for Clyde). Could you please send me an update on the descendents of Clyde? Contact me direct at slodance@juno.com. I have over 88,000 people listed in my files but no Shipleys married to a Lemley. The Yoho's have info prior to Catherine (three generations back), but the Lemleys have nothing prior to George.
Bob Lemley
Spokane, Washington

Lemleys of Jefferson and Conecuh Counties (Alabama)

My paternal grandparents were George Leonard and Velma Lemley of Conecuh County, Alabama. They both were from Jefferson County, Alabama. Leonard's grandparents were G.W. and Nancy A. Lemley, who are both listed in the 1880 census as living in Jefferson County, Alabama. G.W. was born about 1848 in Arkansas, although his parents were both from Alabama. Nancy was born about 1848 in Alabama, although her parents were both from Georgia.

I have "stalled out" on these two ancestors, as I can't spot them on any previous census. If you have any information on G.W. and Nancy A. or their descendants, I'd be so appreciative.

All my best,

John Smith Lemley
Decatur, GA

Hi Patti. I tried to get a message to you & it failed. I had been researching trying to find your John. I recently found John Lemley. Sr & Barbra Livengood had two named sons. In Headly's book he had no info on them but one was born in 1789& the other in 1791. Nothing as who he married as the rest of the sons & dau. As you know John Lemley, Sr was at Virginia. He had children born their. I figure those two sons probably born their. The reason Headly had no info on them. Your John was not the son Johannas Lemly which I recently found out his middle ini. was G. for Gabriel which was Gabriel in the Luthern Church which was Johannes dad. Gabriel came over around 1732 & Johannes 1752. Can't figure out about Michael who came with him. In Johannes's will He just names George as his son. I can almost tell you Johannes had two dau. & two sons. Not John nor Peter as I can tell. Their was a John Lemley who went to Mo. at Palo. Don't know for shure if it was your John. He was killed by Indians. Let me know what you think. Sondra

Hi Patrica, Received your message. I need to have a little more info to find your people. What was your Grandfather's father name. Were they from Pa. Need to know if this is the Pa, Albama, or Va., Ny Lemley's. Do you have any dates, where they were buried etc. I found a Marvin Lemley but doesn't fit in. They are part of the Swisher family Lemley's. Also found a William Marvin Lemley but doesn't give much info. States he came from Long Beach Calif. I think he is a son of John Earnest Lemley b.4/1/ 1869. William M. lemley b 4/1, 1893. I have about four books left. George Lemley & Catharine Yoho. $30 each. Let me know if you can get further info so I can let you know. Thanks Sondra

Hi Carma. you have e-mailed me in the past. Didn't find anything in past. Recently found on Footnote, Johannas middle initial is G. Thought it was George. But it is Gabriel. Johannes Gabriel Lemly, etc, came over on the Princess Samuel ship in 1732. Johannes & Michael came over in 1752 on Wurtemberg. Johannes Gabriel Lemly is Johannes who came over in 1752 Dad. Also there is a Michael Lemley in Footnotes had 400 Acres of land in Pa. Also, Prov. Paper Supply, Tax list for yrs 1781,2,3, had 37 Acres.
Hi Patricia. Seen your post. Thought I would look it up in Headly's book. Is this your Joanna? She was the dau of George Lemley not George Washington Lemley. His second wife Catherine Bartug had around 17 children as I can read it. I will list them Christina,Margaret, Benjamin F, George Washington, Joanna 10/6/1860-1937,unm, Elizabeth, Virginia, Anthony,Oliver F, Ollie, maybe Tabor, Abraham, cyrus Wetzel, Jane,Dessie a not named child, stillborn & some grandchildren. Hope this helps. Let me know. Sondra

Hi Patti, Tried to get info to you on John Lemley & Susan Tay. Must not have gotten thru. I believe your John Lemley was John Lemley, Sr. son. He had two sons & Headly didn't have any info on them. One was born in 1789 & one in 1791. As you probably know John Sr. & Barbara Livengood lived & had children in Va. I figure thats why he had no info. I figure John was born in Va in 1789. He is not Johannas(John Lemley or son). Let me know if you get this, & send me an answer on my e-mail. Thanks Sondra

I have changed from the above e-mail info. my e-mail is now dalallen@yahoo.com.
I too was in Winchester, VA last summer 2007. I spent the whole day in the archives. Certainly surprised to find the German Catherine and Johnanes Lemley and their connection with the Lutheran Church. All I really found in that short time was johnanes Lemley but no John Lemley. Thought maybe
John might be the son of his and Catherines union. nothing concret. I also did not find a Peter Barstlow, referring to John and Peters trip over the James River Indian Trail to the Monongahela River and down the river to the mouth of the Youghiogheny, and then returned to their Virginia home. My info came from the Horn Papers which have come under question as to whether the info Mr. Horn wrote in his book was the truth or just a story about good ole boys. He plainly states both George and John Lemley were in the American Army for a while. Mr. horn goes on to tell a lot about George and family but just drops John around the year 1780.
If you want any more of what I have, please let me know and I will be happy to send snail mail.
I repeat my new e-mailo address: dalallen@yahoo.com
Just going back through some old posts. Just returned from a weekend trip to Winchester. With stops at the Handley Archives plus 2 cemeteries (Green Hill & Trinity). I came away with some answers but definitely more questions. I think I've gotten a little farther with my Lemley line but I'm still working on it. Have you gotten any farther back the line. Refresher I am related maternally as follows: me-mom-grandma-Bessie Clark-Ellen Virginia Lemley-James Lemley-Jacob Lemley
then I'm stuck.
Thanks

Seeking info on annual Lemley reunion at DeQueen

I discovered this board a few months ago when I began compiling my family history and literally have read every mesage posted (some more than once). My mother is a Madison Co. AL Lemley and when I told her of a yearly reunion mentioned in many of the posts, she became quite interested possibly attending (She is 72 but you would never know it by her actions) This post seeks to determine if the annual Lemley reunion at DeQueen AR is still held on the 1st Sunday of June. If so, is one planned for June 1, 2008?

I realize that time is of the essence, but we would appreciate any details or contact information that anyone could possibly provide.

We look forward to hearing from any of the Lemley family and comparing notes on our lineage.
John,
Thank you for your reply. I too live in Madison County (Huntsville) and I can assure anyone that quite a few Lemley's still inhabit the Madison and Marshall County areas. It is a shame that misleading information about all of the Lemley home places had such an impact that folks quit coming back here to look for anything. Kinda like they counted us as forever in the past. Thank you for the contact name, as I will attempt to reach the Holt's by writing them soon.

When I saw the mention of the reunion, I told my mother, who is 72, and she became very interested in attending one. Believe me, age would not prevent her from going if it was so decided.

As best as I can determine, my Lemley lineage is as follows:

My mother is Lila Lemley, daughter of Shelby C. Lemley (1903-1974), the son of Charles H. Lemley (1878-1954), who was the son of John W. Lemley (1830-1880?). John W. was the son of George Lemley (1802-1873), who was the son of John Sr. (1763-1858). Again, this is based on my research and reasoning process, which may conflict with information published previously.

I know about the homesteading of what came to be known as Lemley mountain (Section 7 Township 6S Range 2E), in fact, my mother grew up on that mountain. I have a second cousin who still owns a small tract of that land. My grandfather lived at the corner Clouds Cove Road and Bush Road. That just happens to be where sections 1,6,7 and 12 of T6S 2E intersect. That land is still held by one of his sons.

I recall reading a post associated with you that someone was once trying to locate the original Lemley family cemetery. My uncle tells a story of how the cemetery was plowed under years ago, but a grand oak tree still remains where the cemetery was. That location just happens to be several hundred yards across a field in the front of my grandfather's old house.

I am glad you have tried to collect most of the Lemley history of the area. I am sure there are quite a few
bits of information that you may have uncovered in your research that would be helpful in fill some of the holes
of my Lemley line.

Based on my limited research, I tend to agree that there is nothing conclusive about the Lemley line when they were in the Fredrick Co. VA or Fairfield District of SC. We all may have to accept the information that has come to light, to date.

I look forward to further contact with you and possibly the opportunity to look through the history of the Madison
County lines collected during your research.

Ron Cobble / ronco@hiwaay.net /
Greetings, cousin! I figured there were lots of Lemley descendants around, as the census records show many large families. I didn't expect to find one near me in the Philadelphia area, tho. I look forward to exchanging info with you, and seeing how our trees connect.

thanks!
Sherry
Philadelphia, PA

I am descended from Ephraim Lemley who was born in Fairfield District, SC, about 1796. One of his sons, Pleasant (a Federal judge in Idaho in the 1800s), said that he was born in Madison County AL, and the family story is that Ephraim lived in Madison County for a time with his uncle John, patriarch of the Madison County AL Lemley families. There was another Ephraim Lemley of Madison County also, but mine moved to Bibb County AL from around 1817 until 1838, when he moved to Pope County AR, where he died at age 97. The other Ephraim moved from Madison County to Limestone County AL and then to Missouri. I have photos of his tombstone, as well as tombstone photos of the older Lemleys buried in Madison County, when they had tombstones that remain here.

I have complete family records from my Ephraim down to myself, but I also have a fairly thorough compilation of records of the various Madison County Lemley lines throughout the 1800. Likewise, I have several Lemley family books, including two published by J. B. Lemley of Russellville, AR, whom I visited a couple of times, as did my parents long ago. I can easily share the records in my computer files with anyone who is "connected". Someday I hope to find proof of the parentage of my Ephraim Lemley. For now I have to live with what J. B. and others wrote, that he was a son of Peter and Milly Lemley of SC -- but I do have reason to doubt that to some degree....

John P.
Re: Seeking info on annual Lemley reunion at DeQueen

From 1995 to 2000, I received invitations to the annual Lemley reunions in early June in DeQueen, Arkansas, from Willard R. & Shirley J. Holt. Their address was 108 Turtle Creek Road, Benton, AR 72015-6462. I attended twice, but I have not heard from anyone in the last few years. However, I do live in Madison County, and I tried to make the attendees at the reunion understand that they had received misleading information in the past. Someone from that area had come back to Madison County years ago and apparently was told that all of the Lemley homeplaces were flooded when Lake Guntersville was built, so they quit coming back to look for anything here. I have tried to collect most of the Lemley history of the area, so I may be able to help with research of the Madison County lines during the 1800s....

John P.
