Thomas B Lenoir

I would like to contact anyone researching the Lenoir family of Marion County, Mississippi, especially anyone with information on Capt. Thomas Blanchard Lenoir (CSA). His sister, Myra Rebecca Lenoir married Lewis Garrett Gallaway in Marion Co., MS, in 1855 and moved with him to Bolivar Co., MS, where he had a plantation. After the death of L.G. Gallaway, she married John W. Terrass of Nashville, TN.

I also would like information regarding their mother, Sarah (James) Lenoir whose death date is posted in the Ancestry Trees section by several submitters as 1822.

Eli Adkins Lenoir and Eva Lenoir from Houston, TX - am looking for their children

I'm looking for any children or other family members of Eli Adkins Lenoir, Sr. and his wife Eva from Houston, TX. They would have likely been born in the late 1800s/early 1900s. Their son, Eli Adkins Lenoir, Jr., was killed in a plane crash October 9, 1945 in Shanghai while flying on a relief mission after WWII. I know that Eli, Jr. was married at the time to Elizabeth "Sara" Neve Rowe Lenoir who was living in San Antonio and they had a son (b. 1941) named Clinton Adkins Lenoir. I think he died in 1963. After the loss of her husband Eli, Jr., Sara Lenoir went on to marry an Otis Farnsworth in San Antonio.

Thanks for any help.

A likely looking Leon Lenoir registered for the draft (all men had to register) in Amite Co, MS in 1918.

He stated that he was born July 6 1900

he was working for Will Lenoir

His mother's name (listed as nearest relative) was Rosaline Lenoir
So that looks like your Leon......but it is strange that the 1920 and 1930 census do not list Will,Rosaline, Leon or any black LENOIRs in Amite CO

in 1930 there were abt 125 Lenoirs in Pike county and 30 in Lincoln county.....but no Leon among them. Perhaps your Leon wasn't born yet, or perhaps he was one listed by initials...Census records for 1930 , 1920 and earlier are available on the internet but we have to get connected to someone in 1930 or earlier first.

Who were Leon's parents and where did they live. How old was Leon when he died?

I have chatted with her and would gladly share the photo of RCL and his 2nd wife Susie Harris if you don't have one. RCL left this family of many children & married a third time to Mary Rhetta Suggs in FL. My brother in law and his sister are children of that marriage. I also have picture of all the children of RCL. Nice to meet you and you may email me at redpep@msn.com if you like. Regards. Ellen

Hello,
Did you ever find anything else about Robert Lenior/Clinton? Rhetta Suggs was my great aunt, her full name was Mary Margaret Suggs and she was the daughter of David and Isabelle McNeil Suggs. She was born in Columbus Co. NC and moved to Florida with her family around 1915. She is suppose to have died at the hospital in Chattahoochee Florida, but I have been unable to find the date or a location of her grave site. I would like to learn more about her and her life, from what I understand she had a hard life. I have more information on the Suggs family if you are interested.
Thanks

John Grover Lenoir

Just made a recent trip to SC to view our Gordon Family Bible and one name that I did not recognize was entered by my 3rd great grandmother, Catherine Ann Belser Gordon. It was first time I had heard mention of this name.

"Departed this Life May 17, 1828 John Grover Lenoir in the 76 year of his age". Cannot find out who he is. It would have him being born abt. 1752. Hope someone here can help me with this. It is a combination of Gordon/Belser/Conway family lines. Catherine did not pass until 1849 and she kept the bibles records up to that point, so is her original writing. This is the only unusual name in it. At bottom of this page of deaths says all are buried at the Brick Churchyard, seven miles above Parkers Ferry.

Hope someone can help
Mary

Walter W. Lenoir - 1823-1890/NC

Greetings! I am looking for information in regards to the life of Walter W. Lenoir, grandson of General William Lenoir. Walter Lenoir, the son of Thomas Lenoir, was born at Fort Defiance, Caldwell County, North Carolina, on March 13,m 1823, died June 26, 1890, and is buried at Fort Defiance. He served in a host of regiments during the Civil War, most notably as Captain of Company A, 37th North Carolina Troops.

I have already consulted the following:
Hickerson: Echoes of Happy Valley
York: Fort Defiance
Covington: Linville: A Mountain Home for 100 Years
Jarrett: St. James Episcopal Church
Cauble: “Walter W. Lenoir,” Biographical Dictionary of North Carolina.
Arthur: History of Western North Carolina
Arthur: History of Watauga County
Alexander: Here I Will Dwell
Harper: Fort Defiance and the General
Hardy: The Thirty-seventh North Carolina Troops (yes, that’s me!)

I’ve also looked at the 1860 and 1870 census records, and I have copies of his compiled service record from the National Archives. I have also looked through the Lenoir family papers at UNC.

I am planning to look through the Zebulon Vance papers, Cauble’s Biography of Walter W. Lenoir (can anyone give me any history on this?) at Lenoir-Rhyne College, and his funeral sermon preached by Weston at the Chapel of Rest.

Can anyone recommend any other sources?

Thanks for all of the help. If anyone is interested in an announcement when this book becomes available, please drop me a line with your name, mailing address, and email.

Regards,
Michael C.
My grandmother told me that her grandmother's name was Myra Lenoir but I have not been able to find anything on her. I found info on a Myra Lenoir but she would have been much too old to be my grandmother's grandmother. I would guess that this Myra Lenoir would have been born between 1870 and 1885. Her family was most likely from Louisiana or Mississippi. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Tina Smith

RE: Happy Valley

The books were written by a Lenoir descendant, Thomas Felix Hickerson, Kenan Professor Emeritas from the University of North Carolina. I have my Mother's copy of the second book, ECHOES OF HAPPY VALLEY (privately pub. 1962) which is a compilation of family letters, and a partial genealogy listing at the back of the book. The first book I believe was just called HAPPY VALLEY. A distant cousin copied some of the introductory pages for me a long time ago.

The books are out of print, but I have found them in libraries, so it wouldn't hurt to look. I would suspect that most SC libraries would have a copy and would scan pages for you. Go to the Lenoir mailing list archives in Rootsweb and look at all the additional information there. Ed and Elaine, especially, as well as other folks have entered helpful information. Also the addresses for finding information.

I decided to add more of my distant Lenoir cousins to my file, and it is unbelievable how many people have Thomas and Mourning Lenoir in their ancestry. There's a lot of us out there!

Joseph Harris - Sarah & Isaac Lenoir

Several places online I have found the estate record for Joseph Harris, Kershaw co. SC, 1801. He left bequests to his brothers, Barton and James, but also to Sarah LENOIR, and had Isaac Lenoir administer the estate. Kershaw was formed from the Camden dist. SC.

I have searched for a Sarah who fits and an Isaac who fits. I would appreciate information from anyone who has found more . I believe that this was Isaac Lenoir Sr of Sumter Co, SC (formed from Camden Dist.) and his daughter Sarah.

Sarah was called Sarah Thompson by 1808 when Isaac died, but earlier Isaac gave a Deed of gift (slave) to Sarah Lenoir's son Middleton, and it was in Kershaw Co. The only way this fits is that Sarah had married a Lenoir Cousin, probably Thomas Lenoir's son James, and had a son named Middleton who seems to be James Middleton Lenoir if you look at the records that have been posted in the past. For some reason, Joseph Harris included a Sarah Lenoir in his estate. So far I haven't found a Harris marriage with the older Lenoirs. I think my Sarah was already a widow by 1801.

So, does anyone have proof of the identity of this Sarah Lenoir?

Barbara (Massey) Ferrell
http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?d...

LeNoir's of North Carolina

While growing up in Mobile AL (1965-1970) we met some "neighbors" we thought might be cousins. I remember Clauda LeNoir, David LeNoir and Celeste LeNoir, but there were 6-8 siblings. They are probably 30-40 years old now. I am trying to locate the LeNoir family from Georgia.

Re: Lenoir connection with McGirt

From the will of John James (written 1787 in Sumter Co. SC), it appears that Mary McGirt was his sister. John names her dau as Elizabeth McGirt. Looking in the records for East Florida, Daniel McGirt, husband of Mary, was trying to keep that part of FL under British control, harassing the spanish authorities.
Also, it is most likely, but not definitely proven, that Elizabeth McGirt married a Wright, because her daughter (Martha) Catherine Wright married my Thomas E. Lenior and had a son Thomas Wright Lenoir, called just Thomas Lenoir in Mary McGirt's will of 1844.
Also, Mary McGirt leaves property to Isaac Lenoir, a son of a grandaughter, Eliza N. I cannot find the parents of Eliza, but I now believe she was married to Wm R. Lenoir. William was in Sumter Co. SC in 1840. In 1850 he and son Isaac are in Dallas Co. AL. Isaac married Margaret Gibson soon after this.
If anyone is working on these families, I would like to correspond with you. If you have seen the original will for Mary McGirt on microfilm, please let me know. I have the WPA transcription, and there are a few obvious errors.

Mary Jackson Will..Isaac & Amelia Lenoir

Sumter Co. SC, 1840, Mary Jackson's will leaves money to Mary Amelia Lenoir, wife of Isaac Lenoir. Mary Jackson also leaves money and slaves to 4 of the 5 children of Amelia and Isaac Lenoir.

Anyone know if there is a family connection? I had not seen Amelia English Y. Lenoir called Mary Amelia before. Also, one child is called Margaret Leah Cox, and I did not have her listed properly.

So was Mary Jackson related through the English family? the Yarbrough family?

Lenoir connection with McGirt

Reading through some of the old wills in Sumter Co. SC, I found some connections I cannot identify for sure.
In the will of Mary McGirt: I give to my great great grandson Thomas Lenoir, son of my departed daughter Martha C. Lenoir, wife of Thomas E. Lenoir, .......

Thomas English Lenoir married 1) Catherine Wright, but I do not know her parents' names. They had only one son, Thomas Wright Lenoir who married Leonora Dinkins.
So....Catherine was Martha Catherine? Was she a McGirt or a Wright at birth? I THINK that Mary McGirt might have been a sister to John James since in his will he mentioned a sister by the same name.

Anybody found the marriage records for McGirt?

John B. LENOIR

My 3rd great grandparents were John B. LENOIR(b: about 1830) and Mary Isaac LANDRY. So far I have only I know of only 1 of their children: Jasett (b: about 1850, d: about 1878) who married William McDONALD.

Since Jasett died young when her twin daughters, Emma Lisette (1872-1952) and Elizabeth "Elise" (1872-1954) were only about 6 years old, Jasset's mother, Mary LENOIR took to raising Jasset's children. It is unknown what happened to their father, William McDONALD. Emma later married George Nelson LaTrace (they are my great grandparents) and Elizabeth "Elise" married Frederick W. Schindler (1860-1904).

Do any of the names above look familiar? I have found them in Rolette County, ND. If so please contact me as I am having a very difficult time researching line. I have found a John B. Lenoir who was the Captain of Little Shell Soldiers and President of the Council of Little Shell but I have no idea if he is the same person as my 3rd great grandfather. Would anyone know if this is the same person or of any more on the family of John B. LENOIR and Mary Isaac LANDRY (ancestors and descendants).
