Re: Robert Wilson Lesley m. Mary Jane Stegall

Robert Wilson Lesley is the son of William and Rosann Lesley. Robert is buried in the Union Methodist Church Cemetary close to Nettleton Ms (Lee Co.). His brother J.H Lesley and his daughter Lula V Nix are also buried there. He was in Co. C 8th CSA Cavalry and fought under Col. William B. Wade, Generals Joseph Wheeler, N.B. Forrest and many others. He was in the battles of Shiloh (where his brother T.N. Lesley was shot and mortally wounded and died 4 days after the battle), and Chickamauga along with many other skirmishes during his time in the war. He surrendered in Atlanta. Although he fought for the CSA entire war, his epitaph reads "This is in memorial for the soldiers that fought for the Union". I havnt been able to figure that out. He did not marry M.J. Stegall until after the war. I know his children were Lula Viola and Thomas Henry. I am not aware of any other children but there is a possibility. Thomas Henry Lesley is my Gr. grandfather.

William and Rosann are buried in New Salem Cemetary in Troy Ms. (Pontotoc Co.) along with other of Robert's siblings and Robert's wife M.J. Stegall Lesley.

William b. 1795 and Rosann traveled from Abbeville S.C. area to Bibb Co. Al. somewhere around the time of 1820's along with a vast list of other people. It is believed among researchers that Rosann was a McAllister but that is not totally confirmed. The reason we think this is because her first son was named Francis McAllister Lesley. There is a Francis Mcallister that is shown to be traveling with them to Bibb Co. that is approx the age Rosann's father would be but, that is a story to be told at a later time if you are interested. It appears William Lesley moved the family from Bibb Co. Al to Pontotoc Co. Ms some time in the 1830's after the removal of the indians from that area. He was one of the founders of New Salem Church in Troy Ms. and some of the church records show him as deacon and elder.

I have a lot of other info. on this family if you are interested. You can contact me at rufnredy77@yahoo.com

Their daughter Anna Joyce married James Reed, their daughter Mary Edna married Frank Stafford and they had a daughter Anna Joyce - my husband mother. Any help in verifying Robert's parents would be greatly appreciated.
Robert Wilson Lesley was my husband's gt.gt.gr.father. He was married to Mary Jane Stegall. I believe his father was William Lesley of SC and his mother Rosa Ann. In the 1850 census there are 6 siblings listed - Alexander, William, Margaret, Amanda, Thomas and James. Any help in verifying Robert's parents would be greatly appreciated.

The first John Harris Lesley 1784 SC - 1855 AL who was married to Mary Gilliland 1782 NC - 1856 AL was brother to my 3 great grandfather, Rober Hall Lesley. They were sons of William Lesley and Ann Caldwell. John and Mary left SC (Abbeville District) after their children were born and were in IN for some time and not long after their sister, Frances' husband died in IN, Theodore had them move to AL to be closer to family as they were getting on in age and their brother, Moses was handicapped and needed special attention.
Many of the Lesley children relocated to other parts or in my case, Robert Hall stayed in Abbeville but his son Samuel, my greatgreatgrandfather moved to MS.
I have been researching this family for years and still doing so. Much easier today with the world wide web at my disposal.
Would be interested in sharing.
Mary

Are you still searching? I am searching for the family of my great grandfather as well. He was James William Lesley, born 1858 0r 59 in McNairy Co., TN according to his word. The earliset census I have for him is 1900 Bell Co., TX. He is also in 1910, 1920, 1930 in LA. All census gives his place of birth as TN. I have never found his parents or siblings in a census and do not know their names. He had a sister Betty but I do not know her married name. His mother was believed to be a Thorpe and was Cherokee Indian.
Does any of this sound familiar?

John Harris LESLEY/Talladega Co., AL

Below is a book excerpt on John Harris LESLEY, b. 1850, Talladega Co., AL. The book is available in its entirety on Heritage Quest. This is a retyped copy from my files.
Evelyn Leslie
co-Administrator LESLIE DNA Project

NOTABLE MEN OF ALABAMA: Personal and Genealogical, with portraits
Originally published: Atlanta: Southern Historical Association, 1904
Reprint: Spartanburg, South Carolina: Reprint Company, 1976

Pages 363 and 364 of 944

JOHN HARRIS LESLEY, a well known citizen of Talladega County, was born in that county, on Christmas day, in the year 1850. His paternal grandparents, John HARRIS and Mary LESLEY, went from Indiana to South Carolina soon after their marriage, and later came to Alabama, where they passed the remainder of their lives. While living in South Carolina, their son, Theodore Lesley, the father of John Harris, was born. There he married Rebecca BROCK, and after the death of her father, Charles BROCK, came with her mother and his parents to Alabama in 1836. He rented a farm near Munford, where he died in 1892. He and his wife had twelve children, five of whom, with their mother, are still living. He was a Democrat and both himself and wife were members of the Baptist church. John Harris LESLEY acquired such an education as the common schools of Talladega County afforded and began life as a farmer. He continued in that occupation until 1893, when he engaged in railroading and in operating a sawmill. At present he is employed by John H. WILSON in a meat market at Munford, though he still owns a part of the old homestead, where he resides. He affiliated with the Democratic party until recently, but is now a Populist and an active member of the Farmers’ Alliance. In 1873 he was married to Sarah CLARK, a daughter of Matthew and Minerva (BEAN) CLARK, one of the pioneers of Calhoun County, Ala. Minerva BEAN came to Alabama in her childhood, with her father, James BEAN, who was one of the early settlers of Talladega County. Mr. And Mrs. LESLEY have been blessed with the following children: Ada May, Mastin Leonidas, Mary Daisy, Minnie Lula, Charles Emmett, deceased; James Theodore, John Oscar, William Clark, Anna Eola, Clifford Coleman, Ruby, and Samuel Troy.

I am getting in the DAR on Idah's father Robert who was only 15 when he served in the REV War. I would like to know about Idah/ when William Robert came to America from N.Y. to PA anything on him before coming to Amer. Is the book still in print and is the reunion still being held in Pikeville. I live in Mt.

I really hope you are my answer. My ancestor is Robert Lesley who's father is William Robert Lesley. Robert's daughter Idah married Edward Milam. Their daughter Rachel married Samuel Henson. I found where William Robert was born in 1729 and died in l802. I saw where he was born in
Scotland and then I saw Dublin, Ireland. My grandfather told me his grandfather was born in Scotland but he also told me his grandmother was Filorie Milam and turns out she is Adah. He was in his 70's when he told me this. I am 69 and still have my notes he told me when I was 11. I am getting in the DAR on Robert, Idah's father who was only 15 in the Rev. War also Wm. Robt was in the War. This family moved from VA to Pike, Ky. Rachel was born in Floyd, Ky. somehow moved to Portsmouth, Ohio. married my g. grandfather Samuel Henson in l867 d. probably giving childbirth by l878. I am very anxious to find out about the Lesleys and will be glad to share as I find out. Why did they go to KY? Only Wm Robert went to Ky with his son Robert and his wife? and l0 children and later had 5 more. I have just now got thru the Milam's to the Lesley's. A geneologist in Conn. found the Lesley family for a cousin of mine. I do have a list of Robert and his Wife? children. Do you know what ship Wm came in on. I am going to the archives Sat. and hope to find more.

Carolyn Roy
Mt. Pleasant, TN

Glad to find another Lesley researcher. We had to explore all SC LESLEYS to find our family, so have a lot of info. I have William R. Lesley, 8th child of David, b.c.1817 and Leona Margaret HOOD, b.c.1820. David was son of William, Sr. and Rosannah HENDRICKS LESLEY. I, too have no death record for William R. but was surprised when I found his son, Arthur Benjamin had lived and died in Rowan Co, NC (our home county.) We had limited research to SC. Arthur Benjamin b.Mar.13,1877, d.Apr.8,1961, is buried at Immanuel Lutheran Cem. Rowan Co., NC. He left a daughter, Mrs. Dave M. Peeler, whom I have not been able to locate and a stepson.

WILLIAM LESSLEY/LESLEY AND ANNE CALDWELL

Hope someone can provide me with more info on this very large family. This family originated in Scotland but for whatever reasons moved to Ireland but always proud of their Scotland heritage. Above William came from Ireland to NC first before settling in Abbeville District of SC. He married 1778 above Anne. They had a very large family (which I know details on some) and hope other descendents will help fill in the gaps.
Children are:
1. Thomas Lesley 1780 - 1784
2. James Lesley 1782 - 1808
3. John Harris Lesley 1784 - 1855
4. Jane Lesley 1786 - 1807
5. Robert Hall Lesley 1787 - 1847 (my 3rd great GF)
6. Anne Lesley 1788 - 1863
7. Elizabeth Lesley 1789 - 1807
8. William Lesley 1793 - 1867
9. Thomas Lewis Lesley 1795 - 1929
10. David Lesley 1797 -
11. Ezekial Lesley 1799 - 1803
12. Samuel Lesley 1800 - (was told Mother died giving birth to him)
I would love to hear from other descendents to double check my research for accuracy.
Another family member hired a professional genealogist to do his research and there are so many discrepancies, I was amazed (not to mention the person who did the research did not provide sources at how they arrived at info). I have much more than this but will start here.

Mary

Bonnie
I have reason to believe we are searching for the same Lesley family. My great grandmother was Emma E Lesley, born Mar 1853 in MS. Married Thomas Jefferson Claunch 1873 in MS. Emma died 1919 in TX. One of their sons, Samuel Lesley Claunch is my grandfather, my Mom's Dad. I knew that Emma's parents were Samuel and Mary Lesley of SC, but did not have much on them. All their children were born in MS. Would love to learn more about this family.
Please email me.
Mary

Lesley/Claunch Connections

I am trying to find more info on my Lesley lineage. My great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Claunch married Emma E Leslie, dau of Samuel Leslie and Mary?. Census reports indicate that Samuel was born abt 1814 in SC but moved to MS, which is where most of the children I located were born. Emma came from a pretty large family, so hopefully someone out there descends from this family. Emma was born 5 Mar 1853 in MS and died Mar 1919 TX. They married 1873 in Lee Co., MS

Just saw your post about 200 years of Leslies. If there is an index would you see if the book mentions a Samuel Leslie b.a. 1765 lived York and Beaver Counties, PA, wife Mary Ann died in York in 1799; sons Samuel Jr. and probably Francis. Francis married Eleanor Morrow and settled in Lawrence/Butler Counties, PA. We are descended from Francis and have most of his kids documented.
Thanks for your time. I hate to buy the book only to find out we're not in it!!!!!!!1
Nancy Updegraph
