Lesleys From Ireland

I apologize..my great-great-great-great grandparents were forced from Scotland into Ireland in 1680 and came to colonial America about 1765. Anyway, they eventually moved westward and followed an old Indian trail that led them through Georgia, Birmingham, and eventually Tuscaloosa, Alabama. My ancestors stayed in Tuscaloosa until approximately 1846/47 and then moved onto Tupelo, MS where many of my relatives now reside. Presently, there are several family members who now reside in Louisiana, Alabama, Oregon, Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Florida, New York, and South Carolina. I will post more detailed information this week.

John Harris LESLEY/Talladega Co., AL

Below is a book excerpt on John Harris LESLEY, b. 1850, Talladega Co., AL. The book is available in its entirety on Heritage Quest. This is a retyped copy from my files.
Evelyn Leslie
co-Administrator LESLIE DNA Project

NOTABLE MEN OF ALABAMA: Personal and Genealogical, with portraits
Originally published: Atlanta: Southern Historical Association, 1904
Reprint: Spartanburg, South Carolina: Reprint Company, 1976

Pages 363 and 364 of 944

JOHN HARRIS LESLEY, a well known citizen of Talladega County, was born in that county, on Christmas day, in the year 1850. His paternal grandparents, John HARRIS and Mary LESLEY, went from Indiana to South Carolina soon after their marriage, and later came to Alabama, where they passed the remainder of their lives. While living in South Carolina, their son, Theodore Lesley, the father of John Harris, was born. There he married Rebecca BROCK, and after the death of her father, Charles BROCK, came with her mother and his parents to Alabama in 1836. He rented a farm near Munford, where he died in 1892. He and his wife had twelve children, five of whom, with their mother, are still living. He was a Democrat and both himself and wife were members of the Baptist church. John Harris LESLEY acquired such an education as the common schools of Talladega County afforded and began life as a farmer. He continued in that occupation until 1893, when he engaged in railroading and in operating a sawmill. At present he is employed by John H. WILSON in a meat market at Munford, though he still owns a part of the old homestead, where he resides. He affiliated with the Democratic party until recently, but is now a Populist and an active member of the Farmers’ Alliance. In 1873 he was married to Sarah CLARK, a daughter of Matthew and Minerva (BEAN) CLARK, one of the pioneers of Calhoun County, Ala. Minerva BEAN came to Alabama in her childhood, with her father, James BEAN, who was one of the early settlers of Talladega County. Mr. And Mrs. LESLEY have been blessed with the following children: Ada May, Mastin Leonidas, Mary Daisy, Minnie Lula, Charles Emmett, deceased; James Theodore, John Oscar, William Clark, Anna Eola, Clifford Coleman, Ruby, and Samuel Troy.

WILLIAM LESSLEY/LESLEY AND ANNE CALDWELL

Hope someone can provide me with more info on this very large family. This family originated in Scotland but for whatever reasons moved to Ireland but always proud of their Scotland heritage. Above William came from Ireland to NC first before settling in Abbeville District of SC. He married 1778 above Anne. They had a very large family (which I know details on some) and hope other descendents will help fill in the gaps.
Children are:
1. Thomas Lesley 1780 - 1784
2. James Lesley 1782 - 1808
3. John Harris Lesley 1784 - 1855
4. Jane Lesley 1786 - 1807
5. Robert Hall Lesley 1787 - 1847 (my 3rd great GF)
6. Anne Lesley 1788 - 1863
7. Elizabeth Lesley 1789 - 1807
8. William Lesley 1793 - 1867
9. Thomas Lewis Lesley 1795 - 1929
10. David Lesley 1797 -
11. Ezekial Lesley 1799 - 1803
12. Samuel Lesley 1800 - (was told Mother died giving birth to him)
I would love to hear from other descendents to double check my research for accuracy.
Another family member hired a professional genealogist to do his research and there are so many discrepancies, I was amazed (not to mention the person who did the research did not provide sources at how they arrived at info). I have much more than this but will start here.

Mary

My great-great-great-grandfather was Thomas William Lesley and was born 20 Sep 1796 in Abbeville, SC. His parents (according to an 1850 Pontotoc County, MS Census)were born in Ireland. I know that they came aboard a ship from Carrickfergus, Antrim County, Ireland in 1680. The ship landed in New Castle, Delaware on the Delaware River. They made there way from there and followed an Indian trail to Abbeville, SC.
Thomas William married Roseann McAllister (19 Aug 1789-19 Sep 1867) and they had 9 children including: Francis McAllister Lesley, Joseph Roland Lesley, John A. Lesley, William A. Lesley, Margaret M. Lesley, Amanda Lesley, Thomas N. Lesley, Robert Wilson Lesley, and James H. Lesley.
Francis McAllister (20Feb1821-04Feb1897) married Melinda Caroline Pouge (poque?) and had 11 children. I will update this tomorrow...

I am trying to find more info on my Lesley lineage. My great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Claunch married Emma E Leslie, dau of Samuel Leslie and Mary?. Census reports indicate that Samuel was born abt 1814 in SC but moved to MS, which is where most of the children I located were born. Emma came from a pretty large family, so hopefully someone out there descends from this family. Emma was born 5 Mar 1853 in MS and died Mar 1919 TX. They married 1873 in Lee Co., MS

He served in the Cameron Highlanders in WW I, and in the Irish revolution in the 1920s.

He then resumed sailing, emigrating to America in the late
1920s or early 1930s.

He was a piper, and was PM of our band, the MacGregors in Philadelphia and vicinity. He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason and member of the Orange Lodge, and past Grand Master of both Lodges.

He had a son, Dougal, a US veteran of Korea who unfortunately predeceased him, and Dougal had a son, also named Donald.

Anyone with knowledge of or contact with the family or kin, please contact me. I would like to get in touch with them, as I have some interesting information for them about Donald.

Thanks!
Surname LUSELY, Ann, married Wm.BAILEY

Recently our BAILEY researchers uncovered two new clues to our mystery people. The first was a letter from a grandmother saying our great grandmother's name was Lizzie Leslie,(Lesley). All of our search efforts have failed to find this Lizzie. But we did find where a William BAILEY m. Ann LUSELY in 1727, in England. WE believe this to be our Lizzie Lesley. Our source on the latter is the LDS records at Familysearch.com. There is no other info we can find on this LUSELY name except that there was one person with this surname who was a grower of Irish linen flax.
The church that they married in was located near Derbyshire, it allowed foreign citizens to be married without the long wait for the banns to be announced. Which gives us another clue why we could not find the surname BAILEY or LUSELY in that area. So we are thinking that they traveled from Ireland to England then booked passage to Virginia. A William BAILEY and his wife Ann show up shortly in Virginia.
Does the LUSELY name show up in any of your research? Does any of this sound familiar to you Lesley researchers"
Thanks in advance for your help.
Jeanette Bailey
Independence, Missouri
irshwoman@hotmail.com
Lesley (Formerly Lesniak)

I am trying to learn more about my family and have so far been very unsuccessful. I thought that because my family had changed its name when immigrating to the US a century or teo ago, it would make it easier. The name change seems only to have made things more difficult. The last name is currently Lesley, however, it was formerly Lesniak. It was changed when my family immigrated from Poland. If anyone could help I would be very appreciative. I am not sure when the family move to the US, however I know that it was before my grandfathers time. If you could please email me at MarlbMan20@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Captain John T. Lesley's Cavalry Company

My great-great grandfather, Edward Gross Wilder, enlisted in Captain John T. Lesley's independent cavalry company on March 1, 1863 in Florida. Mr. Lesley (Major of the 4th Florida Infantry) was granted leave after the Battle of Murfeesboro (January 1863) to return home to Florida and organize a company of cavalry. In February 1864, Lesley's company was attached to Munnerlyn's Battalion. The official designation of Lesley's unit was Company B, 1st Battalion, Florida Special Cavalry. They served the Confederacy by protecting Florida's cattle which was being driven north to help feed the troops fighting in Virginia and Tennessee. They also guarded the rail line and protected the citizens of southern Florida from the many deserters and unionists. They were involved in numerous skirmishes with the enemy at Bayport, Ft. Meade, Brooksville, Bowlegs Creek, and Fort Myers.

THOMAS CLARENCE LESLEY

I hope someone out there can help me with my family tree. My grandfather, Thomas Clarence Lesley, was born Jan. 12, 1908 in where my father Edward Arnold Lesley, believes to be Tupelo, Mississippi. According to the Social Security Death index, he died in April 1988 and his Social Security Number was issued in Kentucky prior to 1951. Now, I know he is related to some people in Maysville, Kentucky and also to the Glover family in Jackson and Baldwyn, Mississippi. He married once (name unknown) and divorced as well (dates unknown). He bore a son, THOMAS RAY LESLEY who currently resides somewhere in OHIO (Cincinnati, I believe), and a daughter Ruth, who currently resides in either North or South Carolina. It is said that she traced our family history many years ago. At some point my grandfather joined the Merchant Marines and served in WW2. He married a second time, to my grandmother BEATRICE LEITCH in Brooklyn, New York. They bore several sons and daughters, of which these are my father, uncles, and aunts. Some of them now live in GEORGIA, FLORIDA, TENNESSEE, NEW YORK, and LOUISIANA. My father, EDWARD ARNOLD LESLEY was born FEB. 14, 1948 and he married my mother KATHLEEN LORRAINE RIFFE on February 21, 1968. They bore 5 children, and now have 3 grandchildren. I will post more when I know more..any information that you have will be greatly appreciated.
