I have since found more information on my great grandfather...I have found out that he had another brother named Hermann and a sister whose name my grandmother can't remember at this time...

From my research, I believe that the family last name was indeed LESSIG and not LESSING...

Anna is a half sister to my great, great grandmother Caroline Lessing.
I would like to talk with you if posible. I have Charles' original citizenship paper and will be glad to copy these certificates for you.
I do not have Charles Lessing's parents or grandparents. If you have any information I would appreciate it if we could exchange what we each have.
I know you have waited for years to receive this information.
There is a listing of a family of Lessings that came over in 1854 on the Heinrich von Gagern to New Orleans. This could be your Lessings. There was an Anna, age 13 on the manifest. In addtion, the manifest lists the following Lessings:

Carl (Charles) Lessing age 42 (occupation surgeon)
Cheissts Lessing (female) age 46 (spelling of first name uncertain, and there are scratchouts on the manifest)
Carl Lessing, male, age 8
Hermann age 10, male
Otto, age 5, male

All are listed as being from Hersberg on the manifest.

Seeking information on John Lessing

Hi,

I am seeking information on John Gottlieb Lessing. German spelling of the name is believed to be Johann Gottlieb Laessig (the "a" and umlaut--two dots over it). John emigrated to the US before 1855. He was followed by his family who are known to have emigrated in 1855. His wife's name is Ernestine (or Ernstine) Wilhelmine Laessing (maiden name Hartel or Hertel--a probably an umlaut a also). John was born in Crimmitschau, Saxony in 1821. His wife Ernestine emigrate with at least (and possibly more) children, whose names were Mary, Hermann, Anna, and Hugo. Three more children were known to have been born in the US after they emigrated, and their names were Bertha, Henry (Heinrich), and Charles (Karl). John's occupation in Saxony was a wooldyer. His father's name is supposed to have been Hugo J. Lessing, but I have no confirmation of this other than family lore of unknown reliability. I am seeking information as to John's parents, Hugo, and his mother's name which is unknown, and possibly the name of the church where he was born or baptized for further research. John and his family lived in Red Bud, IL until John's death in a wagon accident in 1862. I have no information records on his death or where buried. I have done extensive research on John's children through census, death and marriage records and have a fairly accurate tree spanning about 4 generations of John's descendents.

Family lore has it that John's wife sailed to the US on a sailboat by way of New Orleans with ten children, and he had a total of 12 children however census and other records from 1860 show only four children mentioned above and Bertha who had just been born when this census was taken plus the two sons born in the US mentioned above, so I do not thing the 10 children number is correct. I have been unable to account for any of the missing children so any information as to their existence would be appreciated also.

Rubin Lessing of Dorna Vatra

I am the Great Granddaughter of Rubin and Ester Lessing...All I know is that Rubin was born on Apr 25, 1885, married Ester Distenfeld in 1908 and had three children, one of which was my grandmother Dorothy, and they settled in Philadelphia.

Rubin had a brother Abraham who was born about a year after him but when he came to the United States, he somehow got the last name as Lessig instead of Lessing and never changed it back to Lessing once he settled his US roots.

Gustav was my ggg grandfather,Emil's, brother!

Their father was Joseph born in Germany in 1824. Their mother was Mary born aprox. 1830 in Germany.

The family lived in NYC after they immigrated to the US. I have the kids as Gustav b.1854, Emil b.1857, a girl (can't read the name) b. 1858, Jacob 1863 and Arthur b.1866.

Emil married a Dorothy Brown and together they had at least two children. Raymond E. in 1874 and Gould Agustus in 1881. Gould married Gladys Elizabeth Heal and together they had Raymond b. 1908 and Mabel 1809. Mabel married Warren Moore...and the list goes on.

I haven't done a ton of research on the family yet, but I do have a family tree on ancestry.com. Do you have a tree online?

:)
Kerry
unionized@comcast.net

I am Arthur Lessing, Bob was my Uncle. I met him twice that I recall - I was 9 when he passed. My father's name (your great-uncle) was Paul Lessing. Before Bob was an Episcopal priest, he was a lawyer and a Judge in Torrance CA; that's where I was born and raised; I have lived in Hawaii since 1982. I would love to share with you whatever you have. Bob had two daughters, whose names I frankly don't remember; I was too young. I found the Lessing Family Bible dating back to the 19th century Europe, where the Lessing family is from - it is being kept by an old friend of your Mother's in OR – Judy Webster. I don’t have any children, so we both thought that the Bible should go to someone on Bob’s side – I guess that would be you.

Please, contact me direct at apl@hawaii.rr.com sometimes these contact addresses are screened by the provider, so spelled out my direct address is apl at hawaii dot rr dot com.

I look forward to hearing from you and sharing.
This is just a quick introduction, to let you know that I have just assumed administration of the Lessing Message Board (note: that the administrator for the Lessing List-Serve has not changed).

My name is Molly Ramage, I am a Milliner in Seattle, and like most of you, I have found myself more involved in genealogy than I could have imagined. I am descended from lines that came to the US from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and France, and I administer several lists and boards for those family names.

I want to thank my predecessors on the board for their work and efforts to keep things going in the past, and I will do my best to continue their efforts.

Please drop me a line privately if there is anything that I can help you with, or if it is related to Lessing genealogy, simply post it to the board.

Molly
mollyramage@msn.com

Re: Amelia LESSING, descendant of Gotthold Ephraim LESSING?

If you are referring to the playwrite/poet form Hamburg, about 1720-1790 then he is related to Karl Lessing, a brother. My grandfather George Lessing is from the same family, only a Peter Lessing. Do you have any more info on when the family came from Germany? My sister is working on our geneology and any information is greatly appreciated. We can also help you , possibly.

Please write.

Jim Sukovich

Charles Lessing from Germany August 26, 1853

I am searching for more information about the Charles Lessing family who came to America, leaving Germany about August 26, 1853, and settling in New Orleans. They were from Hertzberg, Kingdom of Prussia. Mrs Lessing died of dysentery aboard ship and was buried at sea. There were 3 children---Anna who was about 14 and the oldest, is my great grandmother--married to Henry George Frederick Hubener. There was another girl and a boy whose names I don't have. They are the ones I'm searching for. The last they were heard of, they were both unmarried and living in Norco, LA. If anyone has information regarding this family, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Do you know of an Amelia Hannah Frederica LESSING, who could be a child
of the other LESSINGs who went to the US? She would have been born c1840,
and she married a William Alexander JONES and had at least one son, Edward
Everett JONES, born Sep1864 somewhere near Washington DC.

Can you trace your descent back to Gotthold Ephraim LESSING?

Thanks!
