Re: Gov. John Letcher of VA

UPDATE:

It now appears that the lineage of Goverenor John Letcher was:

Giles Letcher + Perkins (?)
Gile Letcher + Hannah Hughes
John Letcher + Mary Houston
William Houston Letcher + Elizabeth Davidson
Governor John Letcher + Mary Susan Holt

In addition, the grandfather of the above Elizabeth Davidson named John Davidson (died 1762) may have been married to an Elizabeth Maben versus an Elizabeth Houston, per some records.

Robert Davidson married Ann (maybe Ann Dunlap), and they had Margaret Davidson and the above John Davidson (died 1762). Margaret Davidson married Robert Houston, and they had the Mary Houston who married the older John Letcher (grandfather of the governor). Mary Houston and John Letcher had William Houston Letcher, and William married Elizabeth Davidson, as shown above. Elizabeth Davidson was the granddaughter of John and Elizabeth (Maben or Houston) Davidson and the daughter of John and Mary (Thompson) Davidson. Mary Thompson was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Thompson, and the younger Mary Thompson married John Davidson in 1787 in Rockbridge Co., VA.

Any comments/corrections would be appreciated.

Re: Letcher family from Poland

To the best of my knowledge the Letcher's originated in England with the family name of Lechee. The Letcher's fled to Ireland to get away from religious persocution then to the US. Most Letcher's in the US come from the Giles Letcher--Hannah Hughes line that came to America in the early 1700s. There was another line of Letcher's that came to America in the mid 1800s that were coal miners. This line is documented in a book called The Other Letcher's. There are some from Germany that use a completely different spelling but changed it when they came to the US.

To Mary Lou Murray:
Would like more info on your Martin Letcher. I am looking for info on a Martin Letcher that is my husband's ggrandfather. He settled in Northern IL, Carroll Whiteside Co, about 1864-5. In 1870 Carroll Co census Prussia is listed as country of origin. Also about 30 years of age. We cannot find any other references prior to that time.
Your Martin is younger, son ? Most other Letchers are from Switzerland or England. You are the first with a mention of Germany. In the 1860's geography of Germany, Prussia, Poland was different that today. Please contact me.

I am looking for information on John Letcher, who married Victoria Sophie Polark in Poland in the mid -late 1800's. The name Letcher may have been something else, because it doesn't seem to match other Polish surnames.

Beatrice and her brother Thomas arrived together on September 3, 1904. Go to the Ellis Island site at www.ellisisland.org and you can find their immigration record there, Williams record is there too.

this may be Thomas in the 1881 British Census, Cornwall
Mother Caroline, father Charles.

Household:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
Charles LETCHER Head M Male 25 Garrens, Cornwall, England Iron Miner
Caroline LETCHER Wife M Female 27 St Allen, Cornwall, England Dress Maker
Mary E. There is also a Charles listed as 29 years old but that could be a transcription error.
Re: Letcher family from Poland

I would guess these Letchers were from the Germany area. I also have a family by the name of Kohl, and this seems to be
German as well. Since the Polarks came from Posen Poland, there is a possibility, the Letcher's were also from here, and considered themselves German and not Polish. My Polish ancestors said at one time they were from Germany on the US census, then later it's changed to Poland. Do you know the German spelling of Letcher? Thanks

Wouldn't have been nice, if our ancestors kept their original surname spelling haha. I am thinking I'll have to do some extra research into all these names, Kohl, Letcher, Polark, and Weepie, to see if they aren't all German instead of Polish. Maybe this is why they left the old country, because it couldn't decide if it should be called Germany or Poland haha. Thanks a bunch for your info.

Mary Letcher married Isaac Jett

About 1778 Marry Letcher married Isaac Israel Jett. The Letcher name has been passed down in the family from the children and grand children as a middle name. I do have an uncle James Letcher Mylar. Thanks for any help or ideas.
